Abstract:Objective To explore the molecular epidemiology of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in intensive care unit(ICU) using a random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) assay. Methods Twenty-one strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated in ICU from Jan 2005 to Jun 2005 were collected.DNA extracted from all isolates was amplified by RAPD,meanwhile antibiotic sensitivity of bacteria was assayed. Results Twenty-one strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were distinguished into 14 RAPD types with a typeability rate of 100%.Three stains had the same profiles implying an outbreak of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in ICU.Antibiotic sensitivity testing indicated that all of the 21 strains were multidrug resistant strains which were only susceptible to a few antimicrobials including imipenem and ampicillin/sulbactam.Conclusion RAPD is a valuable technique with simplicity and high typeability rate by which an outbreak of Pseudomonas aeruginosa occurred in ICU was comfirmed.
