Abstract:We study an inverse problem of determining the shape of a bending wall with a given surface pressure distribution in the two-dimensional steady supersonic potential flow. The given pressure distribution on the wall surface is assumed to be a small perturbation of the pressure distribution corresponding to a bending convex wall and to have a bounded total variation. In this setting, we first give the background solution which only contains strong rarefaction waves generated by a bending convex wall. Then, we construct the approximate boundaries and corresponding approximate solutions of the inverse problem within a perturbation domain of this background solution. To achieve this, we employ a modified wave-front tracking algorithm. Finally, we show that the limit of approximate solutions provides a global entropy solution for the inverse problem, and the limit of approximate boundaries gives a boundary profile representing the shape of a bending wall that yields the given pressure distribution.

Abstract:This paper studies the problem on the steady supersonic flow at the constant speed past an almost straight wedge with a piecewise smooth boundary. It is well known that if each vertex angle of the straight wedge is less than an extreme angle determined by the shock polar, the shock wave is attached to the tip of the wedge and constant states on both side of the shock are supersonic. This paper is devoted to generalizing this result. Under the hypotheses that each vertex angle is less than the extreme angle and the total variation of tangent angle along each edge is sufficiently small, a sequence of approximate solutions constructed by a modified Glimm scheme is proved to be convergent to a global weak solution of the steady problem. A sequence of the corresponding approximate leading shock fronts issuing from the tip is shown to be convergent to the leading shock front of the obtained solution. The regularity of the leading shock front is established and the asymptotic behaviour of the obtained solution at infinity is also studied.

Abstract:We are concerned with the two-dimensional steady supersonic reacting Euler flow past Lipschitz bending walls that are small perturbations of a convex one, and establish the existence of global entropy solutions when the total variation of both the initial data and the slope of the boundary is sufficiently small. The flow is governed by an ideal polytropic gas and undergoes a one-step exothermic chemical reaction under the reaction rate function that is Lipschtiz and has a positive lower bound. The heat released by the reaction may cause the total variation of the solution to increase along the flow direction. We employ the modified wave-front tracking scheme to construct approximate solutions and develop a Glimm-type functional by incorporating the approximate strong rarefaction waves and Lipschitz bending walls to obtain the uniform bound on the total variation of the approximate solutions. Then we employ this bound to prove the convergence of the approximate solutions to a global entropy solution that contains a strong rarefaction wave generated by the Lipschitz bending wall. In addition, the asymptotic behavior of the entropy solution in the flow direction is also analyzed.

Abstract:We are concerned with the stability of compressible vortex sheets in two-dimensional steady supersonic Euler flows over Lipschitz walls under a BV boundary perturbation, since steady supersonic Euler flows are important in many physical situations. It is proved that steady compressible vortex sheets in supersonic flow are stable in structure globally, even under the BV perturbation of the Lipschitz walls. In order to achieve this, we develop a modified Glimm difference scheme and identify a Glimm-type functional to obtain the required BV estimates by incorporating the Lipschitz boundary and the strong vortex sheets naturally and by tracing the interaction not only between the boundary and weak waves but also between the strong vortex sheets and weak waves. Then these estimates are employed to establish the convergence of the approximate solutions to a global entropy solution and the corresponding approximate strong vortex sheets to a strong compressible vortex sheet of the entropy solution. The asymptotic stability of entropy solutions in the flow direction is also established.

Abstract:Abstract We consider the problem of two‐dimensional supersonic flow onto a solid wedge, or equivalently in a concave corner formed by two solid walls. For mild corners, there are two possible steady state solutions, one with a strong and one with a weak shock emanating from the corner. The weak shock is observed in supersonic flights. A longstanding natural conjecture is that the strong shock is unstable in some sense. We resolve this issue by showing that a sharp wedge will eventually produce weak shocks at the tip when accelerated to a supersonic speed. More precisely, we prove that for upstream state as initial data in the entire domain, the time‐dependent solution is self‐similar, with a weak shock at the tip of the wedge. We construct analytic solutions for self‐similar potential flow, both isothermal and isentropic with arbitrary γ ≥ 1. In the process of constructing the self‐similar solution, we develop a large number of theoretical tools for these elliptic regions. These tools allow us to establish large‐data results rather than a small perturbation. We show that the wave pattern persists as long as the weak shock is supersonic‐supersonic; when this is no longer true, numerics show a physical change of behavior. In addition, we obtain rather detailed information about the elliptic region, including analyticity as well as bounds for velocity components and shock tangents. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Local and global estimates are developed and a modified Glimm-type functional is carefully designed. Next the validation of the quasi-one-dimensional approximation in the domain bounded by the wall and the strong contact discontinuity is rigorous justified by proving that the difference between the average of weak solution and the solution of quasi-one-dimensional system can be bounded by the square of the total variation of both the initial data and slope of the Lipschitz wall.

Abstract:This paper studies an inverse problem for supersonic potential flow past a curved wedge, in which we design a suitable curved wedge such that the shock produced by the curved wedge can be controlled to the given position. Under suitable conditions, by characteristic method, we prove the existence of the global classical solution to this inverse problem and develop an optimal decay rate on the given shock’s second order derivatives. We finally construct a specific wedge such that the shock generated by the wedge is a convex combined one.

Abstract:It is well known that, when the vertex angle of a straight wedge is less than the critical angle, there exists a shock-front emanating from the wedge vertex so that the constant states on both sides of the shock-front are supersonic. Since the shock-front at the vertex is usually strong, especially when the vertex angle of the wedge is large, then a global flow is physically required to be governed by the isentropic or adiabatic Euler equations. In this paper, we systematically study two-dimensional steady supersonic Euler (i.e. nonpotential) flows past Lipschitz wedges and establish the existence and stability of supersonic Euler flows when the total variation of the tangent angle functions along the wedge boundaries is suitably small. We develop a modified Glimm difference scheme and identify a Glimm-type functional, by naturally incorporating the Lipschitz wedge boundary and the strong shock-front and by tracing the interaction not only between the boundary and weak waves, but also between the strong shock-front and weak waves, to obtain the required BV estimates. These estimates are then employed to establish the convergence of both approximate solutions to a global entropy solution and corresponding approximate strong shock-fronts emanating from the vertex to the strong shock-front of the entropy solution. The regularity of strong shock-fronts emanating from the wedge vertex and the asymptotic stability of entropy solutions in the flow direction are also established.

Abstract:The supersonic flow past a concave double wedge is discussed. Because of the interaction between the outer shock attached at the head of the wedge and the inner shock issued from the concave corner, there is a rarefaction wave issued from the intersection of the outer and inner shock. The rarefaction wave is reflected by the outer shock and the wedge infinitely, while the outer shock is also bent due to interaction. The global existence of the solution is proved under the assumptions that the outer shock is weak and the difference of two slopes of the double wedge is small. Meanwhile, a rigorous proof of the asymptotic behavior of the global solution is given. The property is often applied to numerical computation.

Abstract:The existence and uniqueness of two dimensional steady compressible Euler flows past a wall or a symmetric body are established. More precisely, given positive convex horizontal veloicty in the upstream, there exists a critical value $ρ_{cr}$ such that if the incoming density in the upstream is larger than $ρ_{cr}$, then there exists a subsonic flow past a wall. Furthermore, $ρ_{cr}$ is critical in the sense that there is no such subsonic flow if the density of the incoming flow is less than $ρ_{cr}$. The subsonic flows possess large vorticity and positive horizontal velocity above the wall except at the corner points on the boundary. Moreover, the existence and uniqueness of a two dimensional subsonic Euler flow past a symmetric body are also obtained when the incoming velocity field is a general small perturbation of a constant velocity field and the density of the incoming flow is larger than a critical value. The asymptotic behavior of the flows is obtained with the aid of some integral estimates for the velocity field and its far field states.

Abstract:As indicated in section 111 of Courant and Friedrichs's book [Supersonic Flow and Shock Waves, Interscience, New York, 1948], a supersonic flow around a sharp corner, one of the most important elementary flows, is effected by a rarefaction wave. This paper is concerned with the local structural stability problem on such a wave of a three-dimensional (3-D) steady full Euler system. More concretely, we establish the local existence and stability of a 3-D incomplete expansion centered rarefaction wave when the perturbed supersonic incoming flow moves around a sharp corner whose fixed wall beyond the corner is of a perturbation with respect to some oblique half-plane.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the global well-posedness and stability of steady supersonic Euler flows in a quasi-one-dimensional convergent nozzle. First, we show that there exists a critical nozzle length L1, the global well-posedness of steady supersonic flows can be obtained and the explicit solution is given as long as the nozzle length L < L1. Then we prove the global stability of steady supersonic flows under small perturbations of initial-boundary values by wave decomposition.

Abstract:This paper studies a problem of determining the shape of wedge in the planar steady supersonic potential flow. Assume that the pressure on the wedge is given with a small total variation and is close to the constant pressure of incoming flow, we use the Glimm scheme to construct approximate boundaries and corresponding approximate solutions and prove that approximate boundaries and the corresponding solutions have convergent subsequences. Then both the boundary of wedge and the corresponding global weak solution can be determined.

Abstract:: In this paper we study the mathematical aspects of the stationary supersonic flow past a non-axisymmetric curved pointed body. The flow is described by a steady potential flow equation, which is a quasilinear hyperbolic equation of second order. We prove the local existence of the solution to this problem with a pointed shock attached at the tip of the pointed body, provided the pointed body is a perturbation of a circular cone, and the vertex angle of the approximate cone of the pointed body is less than a critical value. The solution is smooth in between the shock and the surface of the body. Consequently, such a structure of flow near the tip of the pointed body and its stability is verified mathematically.

Abstract:This paper concerns the structural stability of supersonic flows with a contact discontinuity in a finitely long curved nozzle for the two-dimensional steady compressible rotating Euler system. Concerning the effect of Coriolis force, we first establish the existence of supersonic shear flows with a contact discontinuity in the flat nozzle. Then we consider the stability of these background supersonic shear flows with a contact discontinuity when the incoming supersonic flow and the upper and lower nozzle walls are suitably perturbed. The problem can be formulated as an initial boundary value problem with a contact discontinuity as a free boundary. To deal with the free boundary value problem, the Lagrangian transformation is introduced to straighten and fix the contact discontinuity. The rotating Euler system is reduced to a first order hyperbolic system for the Riemann invariants. We design an iteration scheme and derive some estimates for the solution to the hyperbolic system. Finally, by using the inverse Lagrangian transformation, we prove the original free boundary problem admits two layers of smooth supersonic flows separated by a smooth contact discontinuity.

Abstract:The inviscid supersonic flow passing a conical body is studied. The potential equation is applied to describe the motion of the flow. The problem is then reduced to a boundary value problem of an elliptic equation with free boundary. If the surface of the body is a perturbed circular cone with its vertex angle less than a critical value, then the existence of the solution for such a boundary value problem with an attached conical shock is proved.
