Abstract:The unique amino acid composition and spatial structure of silk fibroin make it an excellent biomaterial with perfect biocompatibility and biodegradability.Silk fibroin nanofibers and composite fibroin nanofibers prepared via high voltage electrostatic spinning technology are conferred further superior property for application as biomedical materials.This review systematically introduces advances in application and modification of the electrospun silk fibroin nanofibers and composite fibroin nanofibers in bone tissue engineering,in repair of cartilage,wound,nerve and blood vessel,and in controlled release of drugs in recent years,based on which key innovations for future development of electrospun silk fibroin nanofiber materials are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Medical coatings are now playing key roles in the practical use of biomedical devices. By fabricating coatings, the biocompatibility of the devices would be significantly improved, and their biofunctions would be multiplied. Biomedical devices can thus satisfy the clinical requirements to a better extent with the help of coatings. Polymers and inorganic materials are the most used components in the medical coatings, while they both show limitations. By combining polymers and inorganic materials, researchers can fabricate coatings with the advantages of both components. The inorganic-polymer composite coatings would be much more qualified to enhance biocompatibility and bioactivity of the medical devices, showing great potentials in biomedical applications. In this review, we summarize the inorganic-polymer composite biomedical coatings. We introduce metal and metal oxide-based, carbon-based, ceramic-based, and silica-based composite coatings. We illustrate that what materials were used, how they were designed and fabricated into coatings, and what goals the composite coatings realized.

Abstract:Abstract: Biomaterials, a fascinating and highly interdisciplinary field, have become integral to improving modern man's conditions and quality of life. It is done by many health-related problems arising from many sources. The first batch of biomaterials was produced as implants and medical equipment in the 1960s and 1970s. Biomaterials are primarily used in medicine and may be directly or indirectly exposed to biological systems. For instance, we could use them in cultures and mediums for cell development, plasma protein testing, biomolecular processing cultures, diagnostic gene chips, and packaging materials primarily for medical items. Biomaterials should have certain qualities for human-related problems, like being non-carcinogenic, not being pyrogenic or toxic, completely plasma compatible, and anti-inflammatory. This paper introduces the history, classification, and ideal parameters of biomaterials and where they are used in the current scenarios in the medical field, providing a brief outlook on the future.

Abstract:Composite materials are considered as an essential part of our daily life due to their outstanding properties and diverse applications. Polymer composites are a widespread class of composites, characterized by low cost, facile processing methods, and varied applications ranging from daily-use issues to highly complicated electronics and advanced medical combinations. In this review, we focus on the most important fabrication techniques for bioapplied polymer composites such as electrospinning, melt-extrusion, solution mixing, and latex technology, as well as in situ methods. Additionally, significant and recent advances in biomedical applications are spotlighted, such as tissue engineering (including bone, blood vessels, oral tissues, and skin), dental resin-based composites, and wound dressing.

Abstract:This paper reviews some antibacterial composite materials (ACM) all over the world to develop new ACM and to exploit new applications of ordinary materials. The approaches of combining material properties with antibacterial functions were discussed to choose and prepare materials. The research achievements in ACM were summarized by analyses and comparisons. The technique preparing ACM was investigated to develop materials with good antibacterial properties. A new train of thought in design and research of ACM is presented to provide valuable references for producing ACM suitable to Chinese situation.

Abstract:The characters of advanced polymer matrix composite were briefly introduced.From the application point of view,a summary of such materials,as well as the current situation and future development of their major manufacturing processes,were given.The application history of advanced polymer matrix composites in aviation industry was reviewed,and the latest research results of the low temperature curing composites,E-beam technology curing composites,microwave absorbing structure composites,and nano-composites were reported.Finally the development emphasis of advanced polymer matrix composites was analyzed and discussed based on the requirements of domestic aircraft development.

Abstract:Over the last decade, the superior properties of graphene have contributed to intensive studies on the fabrication and applications of graphene nanocomposites. Ex-situ homologous recombination and recombination techniques were listed. Because of their remarkable features, including thermal conductivity and high-specific area, graphene and its derivatives have a significant prospective for medical and biological applications, including drug delivery and bio-imaging. The usage of graphene-based nanomaterials is a hot topic in medicinal research. Many research studies have been performed on graphene-based composites, but only a few reviews have been published regarding their applications in the biomedical field and potential risk factors associated with human well-being and the environment. Hence, this review paper aims to provide in-depth information on ongoing knowledge and results about the properties of graphene-based composites. The discovery, developmental methods, structural properties, and synthesis of graphene nanomaterials have been discussed. After a brief description of the most common methods used for fabricating or extracting graphene derivatives, the main steps of graphene-based composite preparation are introduced. Applications of graphene-based composites in drug delivery, medical, and biomedical fields have been addressed. Objective: In this paper, the applications of 3D printing technology in the medical field are classified and summarized, and their characteristics are introduced. Methods: This paper mainly summarizes the contribution of 3D printing technology to the field of medicine, as well as four applications of 3D printing technology in medicine, and also introduces some examples of clinical application of 3D printing. Results: 3D printing has proved to be an emerging art and a new innovation. It has a variety of different medical applications. Because of its limitations, it is not routinely used in clinical practice. However, it will be open to the public in the near future due to technological advances. Abstract:An overview of various biomedical applications of polymer-composite materials reported in the literature over the last 30 years is presented in this paper. For the benefit of the readers, general information regarding structure and function of tissues, types and purpose of implants/medical devices, and various other materials used, are also briefly presented. Different types of polymer composite that are already in use or are investigated for various biomedical applications are presented. Specific advantages of using polymer-composite biomaterials in selected applications are also highlighted. The paper also examines the critical issues and scientific challenges that require further research and development of polymer composite materials for their increased acceptance in the biomedical industry.

Abstract:Tissue engineering is an interdisciplinary field of science that has developed very intensively in recent years. The first part of this review describes materials with medical and dental applications from the following groups: metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Both positive and negative sides of their application are presented from the point of view of medical application and mechanical properties. A variety of techniques for the manufacture of biomedical components are presented in this review. The main focus of this work is on additive manufacturing and 3D printing, as these modern techniques have been evaluated to be the best methods for the manufacture of medical and dental devices. The second part presents devices for skull bone reconstruction. The materials from which they are made and the possibilities offered by 3D printing in this field are also described. The last part concerns dental transitional implants (scaffolds) for guided bone regeneration, focusing on polylactide–hydroxyapatite nanocomposite due to its unique properties. This section summarises the current knowledge of scaffolds, focusing on the material, mechanical and biological requirements, the effects of these devices on the human body, and their great potential for applications.

Abstract:Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) has been widely used during the past decades in the medical field. Its versatile nature makes PEEK very popular in a variety of medical devices. The purpose of this article is to summarize the medical applications of PEEK in following fields: cranioplasty, dental implants, interbody fusion, joint replacements, soft-tissue repairs, and cardiac surgery. PEEK, as a biocompatible polymer, has been used in fields related to tissue fixation and reconstruction. This is largely due to its superior mechanical characteristics and biocompatibility. The author believes that as collaboration between medical professionals and engineers becomes more standard, PEEK and its composites will become more available and versatile.

Abstract:Medical device contamination caused by microbial pathogens such as bacteria and fungi has posed a severe threat to the patients' health in hospitals. Due to the increasing resistance of pathogens to antibiotics, the efficacy of traditional antibiotics treatment is gradually decreasing for the infection treatment. Therefore, it is urgent to develop new antibacterial drugs to meet clinical or civilian needs. Antibacterial polymers have attracted the interests of researchers due to their unique bactericidal mechanism and excellent antibacterial effect. This article reviews the mechanism and advantages of antimicrobial polymers and the consideration for their translation. Their applications and advances in medical device surface coating were also reviewed. The information will provide a valuable reference to design and develop antibacterial devices that are resistant to pathogenic infections.

Abstract:Ultrafine powders of hydroxyapatite (HAP) and zirconia (ZrO2) containing 3mol% Y2O3 were prepared by chemical co-precipitate method. Based on them, HAP-ZrO2 binary composite and HAP-ZrO2-BG triple composite were sintered by inter-composite of different kinds of materials. The composition and microstructure of these materials were revealed by means of testing methods of XRD, FTIR, TEM, SEM, etc. The study showed bioceramic composite had good mechanical properties, chemical stability, and biocompatibility. The composites were new bioceramic composite materials with good prospects.
