Abstract:Quantum 8, 1333 (2024). https://doi.org/10.22331/q-2024-05-02-1333 Bell inequalities play a key role in certifying quantum properties for device-independent quantum information protocols. It is still a major challenge, however, to devise Bell inequalities tailored for an arbitrary given quantum state. Existing approaches based on sums of squares provide results in this direction, but they are restricted by the necessity of first choosing measurement settings suited to the state. Here, we show how the sum of square property can be enforced for an arbitrary target state by making an appropriate choice of nullifiers, which is made possible by leaving freedom in the choice of measurement. Using our method, we construct simple Bell inequalities for several families of quantum states, including partially entangled multipartite GHZ states and qutrit states. In most cases we are able to prove that the constructed Bell inequalities achieve self-testing of the target state. We also use the freedom in the choice of measurement to self-test partially entangled two-qubit states with a family of settings with two parameters. Finally, we show that some statistics can be self-tested with distinct Bell inequalities, hence obtaining new insight on the shape of the set of quantum correlations.

Mission Design for the Laser Astrometric Test Of Relativity

Abstract:This paper focuses on the mission design for the Laser Astrometric Test Of Relativity (LATOR). This mission uses laser interferometry between two micro-spacecraft whose lines of sight pass close by the Sun to accurately measure deflection of light in the solar gravity. The key element of the experimental design is a redundant geometry optical truss provided by a long-baseline (100 m) multi-channel stellar optical interferometer placed on the International Space Station (ISS). The spatial interferometer is used for measuring the angles between the two spacecraft and for orbit determination purposes. The geometric redundancy enables LATOR to measure the departure from Euclidean geometry caused by the solar gravity field to a very high accuracy. Such a design enables LATOR to improve the value of the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) parameter $\gamma$ to unprecedented levels of accuracy of 1 part in 10$^{8}$; the misison will also measure effects of the next post-Newtonian order ($\propto G^2$) of light deflection resulting from gravity's intrinsic non-linearity. The solar quadrupole moment parameter, $J_2$, will be measured with high precision, as well as a variety of other relativistic effects including Lense-Thirring precession. LATOR will lead to very robust advances in the tests of Fundamental physics: this mission could discover a violation or extension of general relativity, or reveal the presence of an additional long range interaction in the physical law.

Abstract:Cryptographic key exchange protocols traditionally rely on computational conjectures such as the hardness of prime factorisation to provide security against eavesdropping attacks. Remarkably, quantum key distribution protocols like the one proposed by Bennett and Brassard provide information-theoretic security against such attacks, a much stronger form of security unreachable by classical means. However, quantum protocols realised so far are subject to a new class of attacks exploiting implementation defects in the physical devices involved, as demonstrated in numerous ingenious experiments. Following the pioneering work of Ekert proposing the use of entanglement to bound an adversary's information from Bell's theorem, we present here the experimental realisation of a complete quantum key distribution protocol immune to these vulnerabilities. We achieve this by combining theoretical developments on finite-statistics analysis, error correction, and privacy amplification, with an event-ready scheme enabling the rapid generation of high-fidelity entanglement between two trapped-ion qubits connected by an optical fibre link. The secrecy of our key is guaranteed device-independently: it is based on the validity of quantum theory, and certified by measurement statistics observed during the experiment. Our result shows that provably secure cryptography with real-world devices is possible, and paves the way for further quantum information applications based on the device-independence principle.

Abstract:It is well-known from the representation theory of particle physics that the tensor product of two fundamental representation of SU(2) and SU(3) group can be decomposed to obtain the desired spectrum of the physical states. In this paper, we apply this tenet in case of two {\it non-local} qubits and qutrits, which leads the complete spectrum of their entangled states in their respective basis. For qutrit system, the study of their properties reveals the existence of a new $\sqrt{2}$ inequality, in addition to usual Bell-CHSH type $2\sqrt{2}$ inequality, which is significant from the experimental point of view.

Abstract:Quantum cryptography is the study of delivering secret communications across a quantum channel. Recently, Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) has been recognized as the most important breakthrough in quantum cryptography. This process facilitates two distant parties to share secure communications based on physical laws. The BB84 protocol was developed in 1984 and remains the most widely used among BB92, Ekert91, COW, and SARG04 protocols. However the practical security of QKD with imperfect devices have been widely discussed, and there are many ways to guarantee that generated key by QKD still provides unconditional security. This paper proposed a novel method that allows users to communicate while generating the secure keys as well as securing the transmission without any leakage of the data. In this approach sender will never reveal her basis, hence neither the receiver nor the intruder will get knowledge of the fundamental basis.Further to detect Eve, polynomial interpolation is also used as a key verification technique. In order to fully utilize the quantum computing capabilities provided by IBM quantum computers, the protocol is executed using the Qiskit backend for 45 qubits. This article discusses a plot of % error against alpha (strength of eavesdropping). As a result, different types of noise have been included, and the success probability of the desired key bits has been determined. Furthermore, the success probability under depolarizing noise is explained for different qubit counts.Last but not least, even when the applied noise is increased to maximum capacity, a 50% probability of successful key generation is still observed in an experiment.

Abstract:This article provides the unconditional security of a semi quantum key distribution (SQKD) protocol based on 3-dimensional quantum states. By deriving a lower bound for the key rate, in the asymptotic scenario, as a function of the quantum channel's noise, we find that this protocol has improved secret key rate with much more tolerance for noise compared to the previous 2-dimensional SQKD protocol. Our results highlight that, similar to the fully quantum key distribution protocol, increasing the dimension of the system can increase the noise tolerance in the semi-quantum key distribution, as well.

Abstract:A scheme of quantum authentication is presented. Two parties share Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) pairs previously as the authentication key which servers as encoder and decoder. The authentication is accomplished with local controlled-NOT operations and unitary rotations. It is shown that our scheme is secure even in the presence of an eavesdropper who has complete control over both classical and quantum channels. Another character of this protocol is that the EPR sources are reusable. The robustness of this protocol is also discussed.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics can produce correlations that are stronger than classically allowed. This stronger–than–classical correlation is the "fuel" for quantum computing. In 1991 Schumacher forwarded a beautiful geometric approach, analogous to the well-known result of Bell, to capture non-classicality of this correlation for a singlet state. He used well-established information distance defined on an ensemble of identically–prepared states. He calculated that for certain detector settings used to measure the entangled state, the resulting geometry violated a triangle inequality — a violation that is not possible classically. This provided a novel information–based geometric Bell inequality in terms of a "covariance distance." Here we experimentally-reproduce his construction and demonstrate a definitive violation for a Bell state of two photons based on the usual spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a paired BBO crystal. The state we produced had a visibility of Vad=0.970. We discuss generalizations to higher dimensional multipartite quantum states.

Abstract:Using the previously shared Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen pairs, a proposal which can be used to distribute a quantum key and identify the user's identification simultaneously is presented. In this scheme, two local unitary operations and the Bell state measurement are used. Combined with quantum memories, a cryptographic network is proposed. One advantage is no classical communication is needed, which make the scheme more secure. The secure analysis of this scheme is shown.

Abstract:In the "counterfactual quantum cryptography" scheme [T.-G. Noh, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 230501 (2009)], two legitimate distant peers may share secret-key bits even when the information carriers do not travel in the quantum channel. The security of this protocol with an ideal single-photon source has been proved by Yin et al. [Z.-Q. Yin, H. W. Li, W. Chen, Z. F. Han, and G. C. Guo, Phys. Rev. A 82, 042335 (2010)]. In this paper, we prove the security of the counterfactual-quantum-cryptography scheme based on a commonly used weak-coherent-laser source by considering a general collective attack. The basic assumption of this proof is that the efficiency and dark-counting rate of a single-photon detector are consistent for any n-photon Fock states. Then through randomizing the phases of the encoding weak coherent states, Eve's ancilla will be transformed into a classical mixture. Finally, the lower bound of the secret-key-bit rate and a performance analysis for the practical implementation are both given.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) can theoretically achieve the Holy Grail of cryptography, information-theoretic security against eavesdropping. However, in practice, discrepancies between the mathematical models assumed in security proofs and the actual functioning of the devices used in implementations prevent it from reaching this goal. Device-independent QKD is currently not a satisfactory solution to this problem, as its performance is extremely poor and most of its security proofs assume that the user devices leak absolutely no information to the outside. On the other hand, measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD can guarantee security with arbitrarily flawed receivers while achieving high performance, and the remaining challenge is ensuring its security in the presence of source imperfections. So far, all efforts in this regard have come at a price; some proofs are suitable only for particular source imperfections, while others severely compromise the system's performance, i.e., its communication speed and distance. Here, we overcome these crucial problems by presenting a security proof in the finite-key regime against coherent attacks that can incorporate general encoding imperfections and side channels while achieving much higher performances than previous approaches. Moreover, our proof requires minimal state characterization, which facilitates its application to real-life implementations.

A Non-commutative Cryptosystem Based on Quaternion Algebras

Abstract:We propose BQTRU, a non-commutative NTRU-like cryptosystem over quaternion algebras. This cryptosystem uses bivariate polynomials as the underling ring. The multiplication operation in our cryptosystem can be performed with high speed using quaternions algebras over finite rings. As a consequence, the key generation and encryption process of our cryptosystem is faster than NTRU in comparable parameters. Typically using Strassen's method, the key generation and encryption process is approximately $16/7$ times faster than NTRU for an equivalent parameter set. Moreover, the BQTRU lattice has a hybrid structure that makes inefficient standard lattice attacks on the private key. This entails a higher computational complexity for attackers providing the opportunity of having smaller key sizes. Consequently, in this sense, BQTRU is more resistant than NTRU against known attacks at an equivalent parameter set. Moreover, message protection is feasible through larger polynomials and this allows us to obtain the same security level as other NTRU-like cryptosystems but using lower dimensions.

Hybrid Quantum Cryptography from Communication Complexity

Abstract:We introduce an explicit construction for a key distribution protocol in the Quantum Computational Timelock (QCT) security model, where one assumes that computationally secure encryption may only be broken after a time much longer than the coherence time of available quantum memories. Taking advantage of the QCT assumptions, we build a key distribution protocol called HM-QCT from the Hidden Matching problem for which there exists an exponential gap in one-way communication complexity between classical and quantum strategies. We establish that the security of HM-QCT against arbitrary i.i.d. attacks can be reduced to the difficulty of solving the underlying Hidden Matching problem with classical information. Legitimate users, on the other hand, can use quantum communication, which gives them the possibility of sending multiple copies of the same quantum state while retaining an information advantage. This leads to an everlasting secure key distribution scheme over $n$ bosonic modes. Such a level of security is unattainable with purely classical techniques. Remarkably, the scheme remains secure with up to $\mathcal{O}\big( \frac{\sqrt{n}}{\log(n)}\big)$ input photons for each channel use, extending the functionalities and potentially outperforming QKD rates by several orders of magnitudes.

Abstract:Entanglement-measurement attack is a well-known attack in quantum cryptography. In quantum cryptography protocols, eavesdropping checking can resist this attack. There are two known eavesdropping checking methods. One is to use decoy photon technology for eavesdropping checking. The other is to use the entanglement correlation of two groups of non-orthogonal entangled states for eavesdropping checking. In this paper, we prove the security against entanglement-measurement attack for the qudit-system-based quantum cryptography protocols which use the two methods for eavesdropping checking. Our security proof is useful to improve the eavesdropping checking method used in quantum cryptography protocols.
