Abstract:A typical traditional residence in Lishui,Zhejiang was chosen as objective in the paper.First the parameters such as temperature,humidity and wind speed were tested in summer and winter.Then the indoor thermal environment was evaluated with thermal comfort equation.At last the advantages and disadvantages on energy-saving building were analyzed and some appropriate improvements were proposed.

Abstract:All kinds of Chinese traditional dwellings are naturally ecological architecture because of their coordination with environment and nature. Firstly, this paper describes the concept and meaning of Chinese traditional dwellings and ecological architecture, analyzes and summarizes the eco-design strategy of Chinese traditional dwellings, including combination with topography, adaptation to climatic, using local materials. Besides, discusses the architectural characteristics, such as patriarchal system concept, regional culture customs. By which, extends to the strategy of modern ecological architecture design, for instance, rooting in particular geographical environment, focusing on the regional cultural heritage and Keeping up with the Times Innovation opens up new ideas for further research and design of the ecological architecture.

Abstract:Green and energy-saving reforms, which use protection as a precondition, can, not only reduce a building's energy use but also improve its level of comfort. Such reforms can also adapt to the new demands of modern society while extending the life of traditional architecture. Therefore, this research chose a classical, traditional house in Hangzhou Zhejiang, China, as a transformation object - attempting to implement low-cost, energy-saving technology. The building's energy consumption and level of comfort before and after the transformation have been simulated and measured to compare the effects of the transformation. The authors hope this research will provide insights into green and energy-saving reform technology and aid the sustainable development of traditional houses.

Abstract:The traditional houses in Jiangnan, South China are mainly wooden structures and are quite abundant. However, economic and social development and improvement in people's living standards now mean that these houses, with their low thermal comfort and high energy use, no longer meet the needs of modern society. This research explored commonly used energy-saving retrofit technologies that could be adopted for traditional Jiangnan wooden houses. An evaluation model for suitable and energy-saving retrofit technology was established for these houses based on the three indicators of "energy-saving effect, economics and protection of traditional cultural values". This paper examines a typical case of a traditional Jiangnan wooden house, analyses the suitability of different retrofit technologies and puts forward a list of priority retrofit technologies for traditional Jiangnan wooden houses with a "(sic)" plane layout. The goal of this research is to provide technical support for the implementation of energy-saving measures for traditional Jiangnan wooden houses and to promote sustainable development of traditional Chinese houses.

Abstract:This paper introduces the experiments,design and engineering application of modern bamboo single family house.The features of foundation,wall,floor,and roof are discussed in detail.The design and construction of the bamboo house is based on the properties of laminated bamboo,including high strength-light-weight and stiffness-weight ratios,prefabrication,better durability etc.Crucial technics including fire proof,moisture prevention,and anti-seismic design etc were solved.The research and construction of bamboo single family houses validate that such a new type of environmental friendly construction form is suitable for applications in commercial buildings and residential houses.

Abstract:housing is the fundamental need for life, and more than 2/3 of the human life is spent in house or other relevant living space. The life that we spent in the house derives various human affections. House, as a solid expression for the unit of families, carries people's common and realistic demands for comfort and ecological living environment. Being the theme part of the interior design, the inner surface decoration is also the major place for connecting the other facilities. The inner surface design may have more possibilities to bring the ecology ideas to interior design, fulfill the intension and hasten the interior design to a higher wave, and surely it would accelerate the conservation of constructions from source consuming to recycling.

A comparative investigation on sustainable strategies of vernacular buildings and modern buildings in southwest China

Abstract:Vernacular architecture results from long-term growth with strong regionalism and passive methods responding to climate. Its sustainable design strategies are widely recognized as passive and effective solutions to the field of building energy efficiency. This research is proposed to comparatively investigate sustainable design strategies and evaluate environmental performance of vernacular buildings and modern buildings in the South-west China. We conducted an in-depth field investigation including questionnaires on 50 selected traditional buildings and two series of continued measurements (on April and Auguest) on 6 selected representative buildings in Tongzi, Chongqing. This paper focuses on the comparative analysis of thermal performance in vernacular dwellings and modern dwellings. The results reveal that certain efficient and effective passive design strategies exist in the vernacular buildings in South-west area of China.

Abstract:Due to its special geographical conditions, Guangdong has absorbed the essence of the Central Plains Han culture and characteristics of foreign cultures, resulting in architecture in which traditional buildings exhibit unique regional cultural connotations. The architectural design is adapted to the needs of nature and ecology and the arts and humanities. This paper investigates the technical process of using local materials to obtain structural materials. Traditional Guangdong buildings use patios, cold alleys and doors as well as windows in a comprehensive manner to create an energy-saving and environmentally friendly ventilation design, which was analyzed here. In addition, we study the floor plans and artistic characteristics of traditional buildings in different regions of Guangdong. Traditional Guangdong buildings realize the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, as well as embody the concept of sustainable development. Traditional buildings integrate benefits and efficiency while condensing the surpassing wisdom and rich experience of craftsmen from ancient times to the present. Thus, it is worthwhile to research the connotation of traditional buildings to develop modern architectures.

Abstract:This article engages in a survey on the countryside’s building materials in Zhejiang province, and indicates problems in the new countryside construction during the early 1990s to 2005: on one side, rarely few new materials for energy-conservation is being used; on the other side, traditional materials of local characteristics are abandoned. Therefore, this article indicates a range of materials which make improvement or innovation on traditional ones for the characteristic of Zhejiang rural areas. Then comparison is made between clay brick and these ecological materials. As a result, this guides villagers to improve the indoor thermal comfort and to promote rural economic development without large investment.

Abstract:Interior ecological design attaches great importance to the comfort and beauty in living environment, emphasizes to save the resource and protect the environment, advocates the resource-saving and recycling. The existing state of the interior ecological design in China is analyzed firstly in this paper, followed by the discussion of the whole design principle on interior ecological design, as well as the analysis on the changes of interior environment brought by the natural elements, which briefly explains the importance of the interior ecological design. The main idea and primary elements of interior ecological theory is to advocate the comfort and beauty as well as resource-saving and environment-protecting. From the angle of sustainable development, the author appeals that architecture, while benefiting the contemporaries, should leave a comfortable living space and promote sustainable development for the offspring.

Abstract:Hanham Hall (Bristol) and Derwenthorpe (York) are two newly built eco-villages, and BedZED (London) is a famous environmentally friendly housing development project built more than 10 years ago. From energy-saving technology, ecological landscape, building combination and open space design, and architectural appearance and space design, this chapter analyzes these aspects of these eco-villages' features and advantages. It then sums up how the eco-village or eco-residence will benefit from good architectural design (indoor) and excellent community design (outdoor). It emphasizes the importance of the architectural design, economic, and ecological technology application balance. Furthermore, the article pointed out the eco-community's requirements and features: social, environmental, ecological, livable, and sustainable.
