Abstract:We present measurements of fluid particle accelerations in turbulent water flow between counterrotating disks using three-dimensional Lagrangian particle tracking. By simultaneously following multiple particles with sub-Kolmogorov-time-scale temporal resolution, we measured the spatial correlation of fluid particle acceleration at Taylor microscale Reynolds numbers between 200 and 690. We also obtained indirect, nonintrusive measurements of the Eulerian pressure structure functions by integrating the acceleration correlations. Our measurements are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions of the acceleration correlations and the pressure structure function in isotropic high-Reynolds number turbulence by Obukhov and Yaglom in 1951 [Prikl. Mat. Mekh. 15, 3 (1951)]. The measured pressure structure functions display K41 scaling in the inertial range.

Abstract:Numerical investigation of correlation between the fluid particle acceleration and the intensity of turbulence in swirling flows at a large Reynolds number is carried out via direct numerical simulation. A weak power-law form correlationur.m.sE~C(aL)φbetween the Lagrangian acceleration and the Eulerian turbulence intensity is derived. It is found that the increase of the swirl level leads to the increase of the exponentφand the trajectory-conditioned correlation coefficientρ(aL,uE)and results in a weak power-law augmentation of the acceleration intermittency. The trajectory-conditioned convection of turbulence fluctuation in the Eulerian viewpoint is generally linearly proportional to the fluctuation of Lagrangian accelerations, indicating a weak but clear relation between the Lagrangian intermittency and Eulerian intermittency effects. Moreover, except the case with vortex breakdown, the weak linear dependency is maintained when the swirl levels change, only with the coefficient of slope varied.

Abstract:Point-particle direct numerical simulations have been employed to quantify the turbulence modulation and particle responses in a turbulent particle-laden jet in the two-way coupled regime with an inlet Reynolds number based on bulk velocity and jet diameter (D-j) of similar to 10000. The investigation focuses on three cases with inlet bulk Stokes numbers of 0.3, 1.4 and 11.2. Special care is taken to account for the particle-gas slip velocity and non-uniform particle concentrations at the nozzle outlet, enabling a reasonable prediction of particle velocity and concentration fields. Turbulence modulation is quantified by the variation of the gas-phase turbulent kinetic energy (TKE). The presence of the particle phase is found to damp the gas-phase TKE in the near-field region within 5D(j) from the inlet but subsequently increases the TKE in the intermediate region of (5-20)D-j. An analysis of the gas-phase TKE transport equation reveals that the direct impact of the particle phase is to dissipate TKE via the particle-induced source term. However, the finite inertia of the particle phase affects the gas-phase velocity gradients, which indirectly affects the TKE production and dissipation, leading to the observed TKE attenuation and enhancement. Particle response to the gas-phase flow is quantified. Particles are found to exhibit notably stronger response to the gas-phase axial velocity than to the radial velocity. A new dimensionless figure is presented that collapses both the axial and radial components of the particle response as a function of the local Stokes number based on their respective integral length scales.
Space-Time Correlations and Dynamic Coupling in Turbulent Flows

Abstract:Space-time correlation is a staple method for investigating the dynamic coupling of spatial and temporal scales of motion in turbulent flows. In this article, we review the space-time correlation models in both the Eulerian and Lagrangian frames of reference, which include the random sweeping and local straining models for isotropic and homogeneous turbulence, Taylor's frozen-flow model and the elliptic approximation model for turbulent shear flows, and the linear-wave propagation model and swept-wave model for compressible turbulence. We then focus on how space-time correlations are used to develop time-accurate turbulence models for the large-eddy simulation of turbulence-generated noise and particle-laden turbulence. We briefly discuss their applications to two-point closures for Kolmogorov's universal scaling of energy spectra and to the reconstruction of space-time energy spectra from a subset of spatial and temporal signals in experimental measurements. Finally, we summarize the current understanding of space-time correlations and conclude with future issues for the field.

Abstract:The correlation between helicity and turbulent transport in turbulent flows is probed with the use of direct numerical simulation and Lagrangian scalar tracking. Channel flow and plane Couette flow at friction Reynolds number 300 and Lagrangian data along the trajectories of fluid particles and passive particles with Schmidt numbers 0.7 and 6 are used. The goal is to identify characteristics of the flow that enhance turbulent transport from the wall, and how flow regions that exhibit these characteristics are related to helicity. The relationship between vorticity and relative helicity along particle trajectories is probed, and the relationship between the distribution of helicity conditioned on Reynolds stress quadrants is also evaluated. More importantly, the correlation between relative helicity density and the alignment of vorticity with velocity vectors and eigenvectors of the rate of strain tensor is presented. Separate computations for particles that disperse the farthest into the flow field and those that disperse the least are conducted to determine the flow structures that contribute to turbulent dispersion. The joint distribution of helicity and vertical velocity, and helicity and vertical vorticity depends on the location of particle release and the Schmidt number. The trajectories of particles that disperse the least are characterized by a correlation between the absolute value of the relative helicity density and the absolute value of the cosine between the vorticity vector and the eigenvectors of the rate of strain tensor, while the value of this correlation approaches zero for the particles that disperse the most.

Pressure-correlated Dispersion of Inertial Particles in Free Shear Flows

Abstract:We investigate the relationship between dispersion of inertial particles and the pressure field in free shear flows. A three-dimensional temporally developing particle-laden mixing layer and a three-dimensional spatially developing particle-laden plane jet are studied by means of direct numerical simulation. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are accurately solved without any turbulence model. The dispersed inertial particles are traced in the Lagrangian framework. It is found that the instantaneous spatial distribution of inertial particles correlates well with the Laplacian of pressure del(2)p, and from the statistical viewpoint, the effect of particle size on the fraction of particle number distributed within different flow zones characterized by del(2)p for different particles is negligible when the flow is well developed. The potential explanations and applications for this feature are explored.
Spatial Distribution of Inertial Particles in Turbulent Taylor-Couette Flow

Abstract:This study investigates the spatial distribution of inertial particles in turbulent Taylor-Couette flow. Direct numerical simulations are performed using a one-way coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian approach, with a fixed inner wall Reynolds number of 2500 for the carrier flow, while the particle Stokes number varies from 0.034 to 1 for the dispersed phase. We first examine the issue of preferential concentration of particles near the outer wall region. Employing two-dimensional (2D) Voronoi analysis, we observe a pronounced particle clustering with increasing $St$, particularly evident in regions of low fluid velocity. Additionally, we investigate the concentration balance equation, inspired by the work of johnson et al.(2020), to examine particle radial distribution. We discern the predominant sources of influence, namely biased sampling, turbophoresis, and centrifugal effects. Across all cases, centrifugal force emerges as the primary driver, causing particle migration towards the outer wall. Biased sampling predominantly affects smaller inertial particles, driving them towards the inner wall due to sampling within Taylor rolls with inward radial velocity. Conversely, turbophoresis primarily impacts larger inertial particles, inducing migration towards both walls where turbulent intensity is weaker compared to the bulk. With the revealed physics, our work provides a basis for predicting and controlling particle movement and distribution in industrial applications.

Abstract:Correlations for the interfacial terms in the fluid dissipation rate equation and Reynolds stress equations are established for particle-laden flows, based on data from the interfaced-resolved direct numerical simulations of particle sedimentation in a periodic domain at a density ratio ranging from 0.01 to 1000, a particle concentration ranging from 2.3 % to 30.2 % and a particle Reynolds number below 250. The correlations for the mean drag and the pseudo-turbulent kinetic energy are also reported, which are used for the modelling of the interfacial term in the fluid dissipation rate equation. The interfacial term correlations obtained are then incorporated in the Reynolds stress model (RSM) (i.e. second-moment closure) for the simulation of vertical turbulent channel flows laden with the finite-size particles at relatively low particle volume fractions. The results show that the RSM with new interfacial term correlations can quantitatively predict particle-induced turbulence enhancement or suppression in vertical channel flows.
The Imprint of Vortical Structures on the Pressure Field at the Edge of a Turbulent High-Speed Jet

Abstract:We investigate the distributions of length and velocity scales in a Mach 0.9 isothermal round jet for the purpose of developing a linear surface-based model for the noise source that can be informed by the time-averaged flow field. Large eddy simulation of the flow enables the computation of two-point space-time correlations throughout the jet and its near acoustic field. The resulting time, length, and convective-velocity scales are examined on the surface of peak Reynolds stress (SPS), representing the location of the most energetic eddies, and on a "radiator surface" at the boundary between the rotational and irrotational fields. The radiator surface is defined such that the convective velocity distribution on it matches that on the surface of peak Reynolds stress. The location of the radiator surface, and distributions of flow scales on it, are critical elements of the noise source model and are examined in detail. The nature of the space-time correlations, and resulting scales, differ significantly for axial velocity fluctuations and pressure fluctuations. Velocity-based correlations appear to capture localized turbulent events, while pressure-based correlations appear dominated by the interaction of large eddies with the surrounding potential flow. Consequently the axial and radial distributions of the corresponding length scales exhibit different trends. Correlation scales on the radiator surface are larger than on the SPS thus indicating that fine-scale vortical motions do not make a significant imprint on the radiator surface. Scales associated with the Reynolds-averaged flow field, relevant to low-cost modeling, are emulated from LES data and compared to the LES-based scales. Simple relationships are established that may aid the development of rapid predictive models.

Abstract:Pressure gradient and pressure play a key role in the evolution of structures and energy redistribution in turbulence. However, experimental investigations of pressure statistics in turbulent flows are difficult. With development in optical Lagrangian particle tracking (LPT) techniques over the past decades, it is now possible to obtain the pressure gradient fields with high accuracy from the measured acceleration fields, which gives an inspiration to study pressure statistics experimentally. In this work, we construct the instantaneous pressure and pressure gradient fields by the divergence curl correction method, using Lagrangian particle tracking data from laboratory turbulence generated in our turbulence exploration apparatus (TEA), which is newly developed with eight forcing elements arranged symmetrically in space. The measured velocity and acceleration statistics show that the laboratory turbulence in the TEA system is very close to be homogeneous and isotropic. The statistics of pressure gradient and velocity correlation conditioned on velocity confirm the interesting role of pressure gradient in the redistribution of energy in turbulence. In particular, these statistics of pressure gradient are not sensitive to spatial filtering with a filter size up to the lower end of the inertial range, indicating that these statistics capture the characteristics of the pressure gradient at scales in the inertial range or above.

Abstract:We describe a Lagrangian particle tracking technique that can be applied to high Reynolds number turbulent flows. This technique produces three-dimensional Lagrangian trajectories of multiple particles, from which both Lagrangian and Eulerian statistics can be obtained. We illustrate the application of this technique with measurements performed in a von Karman swirling flow generated in a vertical cylindrical tank between two counter-rotating baffled disks. The Taylor microscale Reynolds number investigated runs from 200 to 815. The Kolmogorov time scale of the flow was resolved and both the turbulent velocity and acceleration were obtained and their probability density functions measured. Measurements of the Eulerian and Lagrangian velocity structure functions are presented. The average energy dissipation rates are determined from the Eulerian velocity structure functions.
Density and Velocity Correlations in Isothermal Supersonic Turbulence

Abstract:In star-forming clouds, high velocity flow gives rise to large fluctuations of density. In this work we explore the correlation between velocity magnitude (speed) and density. We develop an analytic formula for the joint probability distribution (PDF) of density and speed, and discuss its properties. In order to develop an accurate model for the joint PDF, we first develop improved models of the marginalized distributions of density and speed. We confront our results with a suite of 12 supersonic isothermal simulations with resolution of $1024^3$ cells in which the turbulence is driven by 3 different forcing modes (solenoidal, mixed and compressive) and 4 r.m.s. Mach numbers (1, 2, 4, 8). We show, that for transsonic turbulence, density and speed are correlated to a considerable degree and the simple assumption of independence fails to accurately describe their statistics. In the supersonic regime, the correlations tend to weaken with growing Mach number. Our new model of the joint and marginalized PDFs are a factor of 3 better than uncorrelated, and provides insight into this important process.

Abstract:It is believed that the space-time correlation is a fundamental statistical tool for analyzing the dynamic coupling between spatial and temporal scales of the motion in turbulent flows. In this paper, by coupling the inner-outer interaction model with the attached-eddy hypothesis, the space-time correlations of both wall-shear fluctuations and the streamwise velocity fluctuations carried by wall-attached eddies at a given length scale are investigated. The present results demonstrate that the space-time correlations for the wall-shear stress fluctuation are mainly dominated by near-wall small-scale motions and the superposition effects generated by wall-attached eddies are only reflected in the weakly correlated regions with large space separations and/or time delays. Furthermore, the findings in the present study demonstrate that wall-attached eddies at a given length scale feature distinctly different space-time properties as compared to those of ensembled eddies with multiple length scales, which provides an alternative perspective for analyzing the decorrelation mechanisms in turbulence theory and developing an advanced space-time correlation model. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.054606 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The pressure, or more precisely, the pressure gradient, plays an important role in turbulent dynamics as it is the dominant forcing term acting on fluid elements. It is, however, not easy to measure the pressure gradient directly in turbulent flows. In high-Reynolds-number flows, fluid acceleration can be used to approximate the pressure gradient because their difference, the viscous force, is on average small, especially in the bulk of the flow. On the other hand, because the pressure gradient field is irrotational, while the acceleration field is not, it is necessary to implement some correction algorithm on the measured acceleration field to obtain the approximate pressure gradient. In this work, we propose a divergence–curl correction (DCC) method to calculate the approximate pressure gradient from the measured acceleration, which takes into account that in incompressible flows, the viscous term and the pressure gradient are divergence-free and curl-free, respectively. Tests using data from direct numerical simulations show that DCC method performs better when compared with similar methods reported in the literature. By construction, the improved accuracy of the DCC method is more evident especially in flows where viscous contribution is not negligible, such as in the near-wall regions in channel flows or in boundary layers.
On Statistical Correlations Between Velocity Increments And Locally Averaged Dissipation In Homogeneous Turbulence

Abstract:Kolmogorov postulated in 1962 [J. Fluid Mech. 13, 82 (1962)] that the magnitude of velocity increments deltau(r) across an inertial range distance r in high Reynolds number flows is typically (repsilon(r))1/3, where epsilon(r) is the locally averaged dissipation rate. This refined similarity hypothesis has been widely used in discussions of anomalous exponents of velocity structure functions in connection with the scaling exponents of epsilon(r), Recently Hosokawa and Yamamoto [Phys. Fluids A 4, 457 (1992)] have presented numerical evidence from turbulence simulations that deltau(r) is uncorrelated with epsilon(r) in moderate Reynolds number flows. In the present paper, results of similar measurements are offered for flow fields with a wide range of Reynolds numbers obtained from high-resolution numerical simulations of both forced and decaying isotropic turbulence. The present results show clear evidence of correlations between deltau(r) and epsilon(r), irrespective of the Reynolds number. Kolmogorov's hypothesis is verified for r somewhat larger than the viscous dissipation scale, but at much larger distances the correlation seems to be weaker.
A Generalized Brownian Motion Model for Turbulent Relative Particle Dispersion

Abstract:In this paper, a generalized Brownian motion model has been applied to describe the relative particle dispersion problem in more realistic turbulent flows. The fluctuating pressure forces acting on a fluid particle are taken to be a colored noise and follow a stationary process and are described by the Uhlenbeck-Ornstein model while it appears plausible to take their correlation time to have a power-law dependence on the flow Reynolds number $R_e$, thus introducing a bridge between the Lagrangian quantities and the Eulerian parameters for this problem. This ansatz is in qualitative agreement with the possibility of a connection speculated earlier by Corrsin [26] between the white-noise representation for the fluctuating pressure forces and the large-$R_e$ assumption in the Kolmogorov [4] theory for the 3D fully developed turbulence (FDT) as well as the argument of Monin and Yaglom [23] and the result of Sawford [13] and Borgas and Sawford [24] that the Lagrangian acceleration is delta-function auto-correlated in the infinite-$R_e$ limit. It also provides an insight into the result that the Richardson-Obukhov scaling holds only in the infinite-$R_e$ limit and disappears otherwise. This ansatz further confirms the Lin-Reid [18] conjecture regarding the connection between the fluctuating pressure-force parameter and the energy dissipation rate in turbulence and leads to an $R_e$-dependent explicit relation between the two speculated by Lin and Reid [18]. More specifically, this ansatz provides a determination of the Richardson-Obukhov constant $g$ as a function of $R_e$, with an asymptotic constant value in the infinite-$R_e$ limit. It is shown to lead to full agreement, in the small-$R_e$ limit as well, with the Batchelor-Townsend [27] scaling for the rate of change of the mean square interparticle separation in 3D FDT, hence validating its soundness further.

Acceleration statistics of material particles in turbulent flow

Abstract:Being able to accurately model and predict the dynamics of dispersed inclusions transported by a turbulent flow, remains a challenge with important scientific, environmental and economical issues. One critical and difficult point is to correctly describe the dynamics of particles over a wide range of sizes and densities. Our measurements show that acceleration statistics of particles dispersed in a turbulent flow do exhibit specific size and density effects but that they preserve an extremely robust turbulent signature with lognormal fluctuations, regardless of particles size and density. This has important consequences in terms of modelling of the turbulent transport of dispersed inclusions.

Abstract:We examine the Markov properties of the three velocity components of a turbulent flow generated by a DNS simulation of the flow around an airfoil section. The spectral element code Nektar has been used to generate a well resolved flow field around an fx79w-151a airfoil profile at a Reynolds number of Re=5000 and an angle of attack of {\alpha} = 12°. Due to a homogeneous geometry in the spanwise direction, a Fourier expansion has been used for the third dimension of the simulation. In the wake of the profile the flow field shows a von Karman street like behavior with the vortices decaying in the wake which trigger a turbulent field. Time series of the 3D flow field were extracted from the flow at different locations to analyze the stochastic features. In particular the existence of Markov properties in the flow have been shown for different cases in the surrounding of the airfoil. This is of basic interest as it indicates that fine structures of turbulence can be replaced by stochastic processes. Turbulent and Markovian scales are being determined in the turbulent field and limits of standard Gaussian Langevin processes are being determined by the reconstruction of a flow field in time and space.

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the predictions of the scale-relativity approach for a turbulent fluid in rotation. We first show that the time derivative of the governing Navier–Stokes equation in the usual x-space can be transformed into a Schrödinger-like equation in velocity space with an external vectorial field to account for the rotation, together with a local velocity harmonic oscillator (VHO) potential in the v-space. The coefficients of this VHO are given by the second order x-derivatives of the pressure. We can then give formulas for the velocity and acceleration probability distribution functions (PDF). Using a simple model of anisotropic harmonic oscillator, we compare our predictions with relevant data from both direct numerical simulations (DNS) and oceanic drifter velocity measurements. We find a good agreement of the predicted acceleration PDF with that observed from drifters and some possible support in DNS for the existence of gaps in the local velocity PDF, expected in the presence of a Coriolis force.

Abstract:The overall objective of this doctoral thesis is to investigate how tiny particles are dispersed in a turbulent channel flow and how the fluid turbulence is modulated due to the presence of particles. Both spherical and prolate spheroidal particles are considered in present work and their translational and rotational motions are described in a Lagrangian framework using point-particle approximation. The turbulence of the fluid phase is obtained by means of direct numerical simulation (DNS). Accounting for the feed-backs from the particles onto the flow field, a novel scheme of torque-coupling has been developed and implemented together with the more conventional force-coupling in current program. In the case of spherical particle Reynolds number effect on particle velocity statistics and Stokes number effect on the particle slip velocity have been explored in dilute suspension flow with one-way coupling approach. The study on turbulence modulations by spherical particles has been carried out in two-way coupled simulations. The effects of Stokes number and particle volume fraction have been mainly investigated and the mechanisms of particle-turbulence interaction were elucidated by kinetic energy transfer and particle induced dissipation between particle phase and local fluid phase. In the case of prolate spheroidal particle both torque-coupling and force-coupling has been applied in the simulations of particle suspension turbulent shear flow in which the turbulence modulations and particle orientations and spins have been examined. Some results on the comparison of Lagrangian approach and statistical approach in simulating the particle suspensions were presented.
