Abstract:The dynamics of a chaotic system is full of chaotic orbits, especially for highe r levels where resonances are strong enough to destroy most periodic and/or quas iperiodic trajectories.Though the remnant periodic orbits are scarce,they are no t to be neglected because they form the invariant skeleton of the dynamical phas e space.For instance,we can quantize a nonintegrable system by its periodic orbi ts,which implies the important role of periodic orbits.Therefore,the locating of periodic orbits becomes one of the key points in the study of the dynamics of c haotic systems.Based on explicit examples,we list three methods for locating the periodic orbits in this paper,and conclude that the Newton method is the optima l choice.

Abstract:Based on piecewise monotone interval maps and linear coupling, we study order patterns of spatiotemporal chaos. The forbidden patterns are found to arise mainly from the reduction of curve intersections due to time invariance of chaotic maps. It is proved that linear couplings may destroy the time invariance, and create the conditions for increasing intersections. We analyze the effects of chaotic map, coupling strength and coupling number order patterns. Simulation results and illustrative examples all confirm the correctness of the theoretical results.

Abstract:We find a novel characteristic for chaotic motion by introducing Shannon entropy for periodic orbits, quasiperiodic orbits, and chaotic <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://orbits.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> compare our approach with the previous methods including Poincaré Section, Lyapunov exponent, Fast Lyapunov Indicator, Recurrence plots(Rps), and Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) for orbits around black hole immersed in magnetic fields, and show that they agree with each other quite well. The approach of Shannon entropy is intuitively clear, and theoretically reasonable since it becomes larger and larger form a periodic orbit to chaotic orbit. We demonstrate that Shannon entropy can be a powerful probe to distinguish between chaotic and regular orbits in different spacetimes, and reversely may lead to a new road to define the entropy for a single orbit in phase space, and to find more fundamental relations between thermodynamics and dynamics.

Abstract:It is first shown from the modulation instability of the conserved Zakharov equations that regular soliton patterns with a periodic sequence in space and time, and spatiotemporal chaos with irregular localized patterns, are formed in the different regions of the unstable wave numbers. The route from quasiperiodic to the coexistence of quasiperiodic and subharmonic, then from quasiperiodic and subharmonic to subharmonic, and furthermore to spatiotemporal chaos evolving from regular spatial patterns, is found. The formation mechanism of irregularly localized patterns is also revealed.

Abstract:We present a new method for locating unstable periodic points of one dimensional chaotic maps. This method is based on order statistics. The densities of various maxima of the iterates are discontinuous exactly at unstable periodic points of the map. This is illustrated using logistic map where densities corresponding to a small number of iterates have been obtained in closed form. This technique can be applied to the class of continuous time systems where the successive maxima of the time series behave as if they were generated from a unimodal map. This is demonstrated using Lorenz model.

Abstract:We investigate classical scattering of particles by a double-well potential. Irregularity in the scattering functions, such as scattering angle and escape time, appears when the collision energy is lowered below a threshold value. This threshold is closely related to the appearance of periodic orbits with energies above the potential maxima. We study the scattering as a function of the energy and impact parameter. In this initial parameter space the scattering functions consist of regular regions interlaced with chaotic rivers. A symbolic dynamics has been developed to organize these structures and used to reveal their scaling properties.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly focus on the set of non-dense points of a dynamical system. We study the distributional chaos in such set. As for a mixing expanding map or a transitive Anosov diffeomorphism on a compact connected manifold, we prove that DC1 chaos can occur in a zero topological entropy subset of the intersection of the set of recurrent points and the set of the non-dense points. Also, for such dynamical systems, strongly distributional chaos (which is stronger than DC1 chaos) can occur in a zero topological entropy subset of the set of non-recurrent points. Besides, when we divide the total space into six layers according to the different statistical structures, similar results can appear in every layer. Our results can also be applied to mixing subshifts of finite type, -shifts, homoclinic classes and diffeomorphisms preserving a weakly mixing hyperbolic ergodic measure.

Abstract:It is not yet known if the global attractor of the space-periodic 2D Navier-Stokes equations contains non-stationary solutions u(x, t) such that their energy and enstrophy per unit mass are constant for every t is an element of (-infinity, infinity). The study of the properties of such solutions was initiated in [6], where, because of the hypothetical existence of such solutions, they were called "ghost solutions." In this work, we introduce and study geometric structures shared by all ghost solutions. This study leads us to consider a subclass of ghost solutions for which those geometric structures have a supplementary stability property. In particular, we show that the wave vectors of the active modes of this subclass of ghost solutions must satisfy certain supplementary constraints. We also discover a computational way to check for the existence of these ghost solutions.

Abstract:For spatiotemporal chaos described by partial differential equations, there are generally locations where the dynamical variable achieves its local extremum or where the time partial derivative of the variable vanishes instantaneously. To a large extent, the location and movement of these topologically special points determine the qualitative structure of the disordered states. We analyze numerically statistical properties of the topologically special points in one-dimensional spatiotemporal chaos. The probability distribution functions for the number of point, the lifespan, and the distance covered during their lifetime are obtained from numerical simulations. Mathematically, we establish a probabilistic model to describe the dynamics of these topologically special points. In spite of the different definitions in different spatiotemporal chaos, the dynamics of these special points can be described in a uniform approach.

We find that chaos sets in when two homoclinic structures are present and then many and continual homoclinic crossings occur throughout the time series. It is shown that the presence of a homoclinic structure is a potential source of both temporal chaos and spatial patterns.

Abstract:In the present Letter, we introduce a new method to quantify the effect of disorder on spatiotemporal chaos [Nature 378 (1995) 465]. Base on the autocorrelation function, we define a parameter to measure the effect of disorder. The results are intriguing and similar to the results obtained by J. Lindner et al. [Phys. Lett. A 231 (1997) 164]. Using this order parameter, the effect of disorder on spatiotemporal chaos in different conditions has also been discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V All rights reserved.

Abstract:Fundamental problems of periodicity and transient process to periodicity of chaotic trajectories in computer realization with finite computation precision is investigated by taking single and coupled Logistic maps as examples. Empirical power law relations of the period and transient iterations with the computation precisions and the sizes of coupled systems are obtained. For each computation we always find, by randomly choosing initial conditions, a single dominant periodic trajectory which is realized with major portion of probability. These understandings are useful for possible applications of chaos, e.g., chaotic cryptography in secure communication.

Abstract:In this paper we study the periodic orbits of a class of 2 n -dimensional control dynamical systems with a perturbation of continuous piecewise smooth quadratic polynomial and a perturbation of discontinuous piecewise smooth polynomial of an arbitrarily given degree, respectively. By applying the averaging theory for continuous and discontinuous piecewise smooth systems, the number of isolated zeros of the averaging function can be determined, which provides a lower bound of the maximum number of isolated periodic orbits. At last, we give examples to show that the lower bound of the maximum number is accessible by the properties of algebraic closure and transcendental extension.

Abstract:Topologically chaotic fluid advection is examined in two-dimensional flows with either or both directions spatially periodic. Topological chaos is created by driving flow with moving stirrers whose trajectories are chosen to form various braids. For spatially periodic flows, in addition to the usual stirrer-exchange braiding motions, there are additional topologically-nontrivial motions corresponding to stirrers traversing the periodic directions. This leads to a study of the braid group on the cylinder and the torus. Methods for finding topological entropy lower bounds for such flows are examined. These bounds are then compared to numerical stirring simulations of Stokes flow to evaluate their sharpness. The sine flow is also examined from a topological perspective.

Abstract:We apply periodic orbit theory to a quantum billiard on a torus with a variable number N of small circular scatterers distributed randomly. Provided these scatterers are much smaller than the wave length they may be regarded as sources of diffraction. The relevant part of the spectral determinant is due to diffractive periodic orbits only. We formulate this diffractive zeta function in terms of a N*N transfer matrix, which is transformed to real form. The zeros of this determinant can readily be computed. The determinant is shown to reproduce the full density of states for generic configurations if N>3. We study the statistics exhibited by these spectra. The numerical results suggest that the spectra tend to GOE statistics as the number of scatterers increases for typical members of the ensemble. A peculiar situation arises for configurations with four scatterers and kR tuned to kR=y_{0,1}\approx 0.899, where the statistics appears to be perfectly Poissonian.

Abstract:In this work, we show that a zero--Hopf bifurcation take place in the Hyperchaotic Chen system as parameters vary. Using averaging theory, we prove the existence of two periodic orbits bifurcating from the zero--Hopf equilibria located at the origin of the Hyperchaotic Chen system.

Abstract:Characterizing existence or not of periodic orbit is a classical problem, and it has both theoretical importance and many real applications. Here, several new criterions on nonexistence of periodic orbits of the planar dynamical system are obtained and by examples shows that these criterions are applicable, but the known ones are invalid to them. Based on these criterions, we further characterize the local topological structures of its equilibrium, which also show that one of the classical results by Andreev (Am Math Soc Transl 8:183–207, 1958) on local topological classification of the degenerate equilibrium is incomplete. Finally, as another application of these results, we classify the global phase portraits of a planar differential system, which comes from the third question in the list of the 33 questions posed by A. Gasull and also from a mechanical oscillator under suitable restriction to its parameters.
