Abstract:ABA triblock copolymers, consisting of l(+ )-lactide (LPLA) or l( + )-lactide-co-glycolide (LPLG) and poly (oxyethylene) (PEO), were synthesized by bulk polymerization, using aluminium triisopro-poxide as catalyst. These block copolymers show striking differences in their physicochemical properties compared to their homopolymers. A microphase separation was observed by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), whereas blends of LPLA and PEO yielded macro phase separation. The thermal analysis of LPLA-PEO-LPLA using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated a reduction of Tg and Tm as a function of polymer composition, due to increased phase compatibilities. In block copolymers of LPLG-PEO-LPLG (content from 30 to 70 mol%) no Tm could be observed. The water-uptake of these polymers is markedly enhanced. These polymers may have potential for parenteral protein delivery systems.
