Abstract:Quercus liaotungensis forests of Huanglongshan Mountain, which had been covered by preliminary-thinning and closed-tending practices, were investigated, the effects of the two practices on the diameter-class structures, static life tables and survivorship curves of Q.liaotungensis populations were analyzed and the number dynamics of Q.liaotungensis populations which had been covered by the different management practices were predicted by time sequence model. The results showed that in Huanglongshan Mountain Q.liaotungensis populations form pyramid-shaped diameter-class structures as a whole, and their individuals of small-diameter class amounting to large quantities and their individual of medium-and large-diameter classes amounting to small quantities, and thus belong to a stable type,so that they will become more well-structured after they are preliminarily thinned.Q.liaotungensis populations for which different management practices were taken have the survivorship curves which approached to Deevey Ⅲ,and their individuals suffered a high mortality at their early stages and maintaining a stable mortality after they reached the age of physiological senescence; The analysis by time sequence model indicated that different management practices increase the plant numbers of different diameter classes and the larger the diameter classes the higher the increments. It is proposed according to the growth patterns of Q.liaotungensis populations that preliminary thinning should be carried out to create favorable conditions for growth and development when Q.liaotungensis forests develop into a certain stage and seed collection and seedling nurserying should be conducted to increase the plantations.
