Abstract:A significant transformation in the history of Chinese educa ti on was due to the rise of the imperial civil examinations system, which in essen ce was a reform of the system of selecting officials by replacing ″election″ w ith ″examination″. This reform showed the importance of selecting talents in t he traditional Chinese politics. More importantly, however, it constructed a ″s ociety of examination″ while shaping the conceptual basis of ″a good scholar w ill make an official″ among the people. Thus, the value and the function of edu cation were changed from ″studying to become sages and men of virtue″ to ″stu dying to become officials″. Indeed, the imperial civil examinations system had already been the most important variable of socialization, which exerted influen ce over the traditional Chinese people. The mental, cultural, educational phenom ena and the effects of socialization accumulated by this system were also a basi c reason which resulted in the differences between the modern Chinese and the mo dern Westerners in terms of knowledge, thinking, and belief.
