Abstract:This investigation tries to determine if, for highly visible journals, namely Nature, Science and Cell, articles with a short editorial delay time generally, receive more citations than those with a long editorial delay. Based on data for the period from 2005 to 2009, it is found that there is a clear, although statistically weak, tendency for an inverse relation between editorial delay time and number of received citations.

Abstract:First, this paper analyzes all possible delays occurring in the process of a paper from its submission to its publication, and statistically explains the negative effects that DPA （delay for publication of articles ） exerts on journals. Second, it introduces the functions of AOP （ advance online publication） in shortening DPA, as well as its significance. AOP is expected to increase JIF （journal impact factor） by 15%. Last but not the least, it brings forward some further research points of AOP.

Abstract:The journal impact factor (JIF) has been questioned considerably during its development in the past half-century because of its inconsistency with scholarly reputation evaluations of scientific journals. This paper proposes a publication delay adjusted impact factor (PDAIF) which takes publication delay into consideration to reduce the negative effect on the quality of the impact factor determination. Based on citation data collected from Journal Citation Reports and publication delay data extracted from the journals' official websites, the PDAIFs for journals from business-related disciplines are calculated. The results show that PDAIF values are, on average, more than 50% higher than JIF results. Furthermore, journal ranking based on PDAIF shows very high consistency with reputation-based journal rankings. Moreover, based on a case study of journals published by ELSEVIER and INFORMS, we find that PDAIF will bring a greater impact factor increase for journals with longer publication delay because of reducing that negative influence. Finally, insightful and practical suggestions to shorten the publication delay are provided. (c) 2020 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In this paper, the internal law of delay in the secondary literature publishing process is presented. The process is demonstrated to abide by the partial differential equation of periodical literature publishing process. A definite solution of the publishing delay process is derived. Accordingly, the expression of average publication delay indicator based on the particular solution is deduced. Then the problem is studied that some information of primary literatures is missed in information retrieval, and the relationship is established between the average delay indicator and the miss ratio of primary literatures in the index periodicals or databases. Also it is proposed that the primary literature should be used as a supplemental tool in information retrieval to guarantee the recall ratio.

Abstract:The steady state solution of differential equations of periodical publication process is deduced, and based on this, the indicator of periodical publication delay, which reflects the degree of information ageing in editorial board of a periodical, is established. The indicator is proved to be the sum of two items: the pure publication delay, which reflects the editing rapidity of a periodical, and the ratio of deposited contribution quantity to the publishing quantity in one year, which reflects the waiting period of adopted papers deposited in editorial board. As a demonstration, the delay indicators of seven periodicals are calculated. Finally, the application of this indicator is discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, the aging of literature and the publication delay are analyzed in the science field. Aging measure methods in common use are introduced. Then the process that the delay is transfered to the aging function is analyzed, and is defined citation delay response. The transfer function model of the aging process is established, based on the model the influence of publication delay on the aging of literature in the science field is quantificationally studied using citation analyzing and mathematical simulating and the conclusion is gained that the publication delay postpones the aging of scientific knowledge and science development.

Abstract:With the growing prominence of interdisciplinary research and heightened concerns surrounding extended prepublication timelines, we still lack of understanding regarding the interplay between interdisciplinary level and the duration of the peer review process. This study aims to untangle the relationship between interdisciplinarity and the time manuscripts spend navigating the peer review phase. Leveraging a large-scale bibliometric dataset comprising over three million journal articles, we uncover a robust positive association between paper interdisciplinary level and the duration of the peer review process. This relationship persists across diverse fields, journals with various impacts, and articles with different citation impacts. Moreover, we find that conventionality and reference age partly contribute to such delay. Notably, our investigation indicates that journal editors cannot fully account for the prolonged peer review delays for interdisciplinary research. Furthermore, our results underscore a noteworthy observation: referees generally pose more inquiries toward interdisciplinary endeavors. This is consistent with the fact that scientists submitting interdisciplinary manuscripts may inherently require additional time to adequately address the detailed comments and questions posed by referees. Our results have policy implications for funders, journal editors, and institutions seeking to promote and facilitate interdisciplinary research.
The Effects of Temporal Distance on Confirmatory Information Processing

Abstract:The present study investigates the influence of temporal distance on confirmatory information processing. Confirmatory information processing principally refers to a tendency of individuals to search and overestimate information that supports with their decision rather than looking for information conflicts (Fischer, Fischer, Englich, Aydin,&Frey, 2011;Fischer, 2011). According to the theoretical viewpoint of Construal Level Theory (CLT, see Trope & Liberman, 2010), temporal distance or perceived temporal proximity exerts an important discount effect on confirmatory information processing under individual and organizational decision making context. It is hypothesized that low temporal distance will increase confirmatory information processing and high temporal distance will decrease it. This discount effect is moderated by construal level mindset and decision’s desirable and feasible representation. We have conducted three studies and our results have found to support our prediction. In Study 1, we have conducted two one-factor between-subjects experiments in which we manipulated temporal distance (near vs. future) and employed a classic selective exposure paradigm to explore the confirmatory information processing. Fifty college students participate in the experiment 1a and sixty college students join in the experiment 1b. The results have shown that participants in a near-temporal decision scenario strengthen their confirmatory information processing, while participants in a future-temporal scenario reduce their confirmatory information processing. Further, we have found that perceived decision certainty plays a partial mediating effect in the process. In study 2, we have conducted a 2×2 between-subjects experiment to investigate the moderating effect of construal level mindset in which we manipulated temporal distance (near vs. future) and construal level mindset (low vs. high). Ninety undergraduate students from a university in Shanghai participate this experiment. The finding have confirmed the temporal discount effect as study 1 did, and also supports a negative impact of construal level mindset on confirmatory information processing. As expected, the moderating effect is testified as well. The negative relationship between temporal distance and confirmatory information processing is stronger when construal level mindset is lower. And the negative relationship between them is weaker when construal level mindset is higher. In study 3, we have explored the moderating effect of decision desirable/feasible representation on the relationship between temporal distance and confirmatory information processing. We conducted a 2×2 between-subjects experiment to verify the hypothesis. Fifty-eight participants take part in this experiment and are randomly assigned into different treatments. Apart from a main effect of decision representation, the results also exhibits its moderating mechanism that the negative relationship between temporal distance and confirmatory information processing is stronger when the decision scenario is represented as high-feasibility/low-desirability, the negative relationship is much weaker when the decision scenario is represented as high-desirability/low-feasibility. The result is shown to support our hypotheses. Our results support the temporal discount effect of confirmatory information processing which shades some light on a new cognitive mechanism for biased information processing. This research brings an insight to the underlying process in mediating role of perceived decision certainty, which responds to the cognitive economy model of confirmatory information processing. Moreover, the abstract and concrete mental representation primed in both mindset and decision context exert a significant boundary mechanism for this temporal discount effect. The negative effects of temporal distance on confirmatory information processing could vary significantly with different level of abstract representation. Finally, our findings also have some practical implications for managing and reducing confirmation biases in the process of information search and evaluation when making a decision.

Therefore, editorial proficiency in the English language is of vital importance to the quality of the journals. This article analyzes the results of the two projects sponsored by the General Administration of Press and Publication of the People’s Republic of China in 2007 and 2010 respectively, namely the “Analytical Evaluation of Language and Editing Quality of Chinese Academic Journals in English Language Issued in 2006”, and the “Evaluation of Publication Quality of the China-Grown English Periodicals Issued in 2009, Sanctioned from 2005 to 2009”, and proposes solutions to the problems presented therein.
A Scientometric Assessment of the Information Loss Caused by the Delays in Publication of Chinese Science Journals.

Abstract:Based on the second order plus time delay transfer function model of the journal publication delay process, we establish a mathematical model of information loss caused by publication delays. Then we collect elementary data on publication delays from over 3000 articles in 18 Chinese journals in four subjects and respectively assess information loss caused by publication delays using the model; thus the validity of the model is demonstrated. The information loss caused by publication delays in Chinese science journals is serious, especially in mathematics. Final statistical and analytical results indicate that delays in publication of some Western journals are also noticeable.

Abstract:The inter-citation journal group is defined as a group of journals with inter-citation relations. In this paper, according to the 2003 JCR, an inter-citation relation matrix of 10 medical journals is established. Based on the transfer function model of the disturbed citing process, the calculation formula of journal impact factor disturbed by publication delays of certain journal in the group is deduced and a changing process of every journal's impact factor caused by the increase of each journal's average publication delay is simulated. In the inter-citation journal group, when a journal's publication delay increase, impact factors of all journals will be decreased and rankings of journals according to the impact factor may be changed. The closer a citation relation between two journals, the stronger the interaction of them and the larger the decrease of their impact factors caused by the increase of their publication delays.

Abstract:Based on the convolution formula of the disturbed aging distribution (EGGHE & ROUSSEAU, 2000) and the transfer function model of the publishing delay process, we establish the transfer function model of the disturbed citing process. Using the model, we make simulative investigations of disturbed citation distributions and impact factors according to different average publication delays. These simulative results show that the bigger increment the average publication delays in a scientific field, the larger shift backwards of the citation distribution curves and the more fall the impact factors of journals in the field. Based on some theoretical hypotheses, it is shown that there exists theoretically an approximate inverse linear relation between the field (or discipline) average publication delay and the journal impact factor.

Abstract:This study examined the relationships among perceived editorial responsiveness, perceived journal quality, and review time of submissions for authors in mainland China. Online review data generated by authors who have experienced the submission process in 10 Chinese academic journals were collected. The results of Spearman correlation analysis show that Chinese authors' perceived responsiveness of an editorial office is positively correlated with perceived quality of the journal, and the total review time does not affect perceptions of the quality of a journal and its editorial responsiveness. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
A Simulation Study of the Periodicals’ Publication Delay Control Process

Abstract:According to the discrete model of periodical publication process, recurrence formulae of parameters of the process are gained and the initial conditions of control process parameters from one steady state to another are deduced. Using the variable separation approach, which is used generally to solve the partial differential equation, the recurrence computing formula of the publication probability function is deduced. First the publication delay increasing process caused by the accepted contribution flux increase is simulated, and then the publication delay decreasing processes under four different control means are simulated too. Finally it is demonstrated that the periodical publishing process is a strong inertia system and it is found that reducing the quantity of deposited contributions can shorten the publication delay.

Abstract:Based on the simulation study of the publication delay control process [ Yu & al. , 2005], transfer function models of delay control processes by adjusting the accepted contribution flux and the published contribution flux are identified using system identification. According to Cybernetics, the feedback control system of the publication delay is designed and control processes are simulated and analyzed when the average publication delay are regarded as the controlled object. On the basis of the relation between the average publication delay and the deposited contribution quantity, another control method is proposed that the deposited contribution quantity is regarded as the controlled object and the simulation result proves that the method is an excellent means and can help editors expediently manage their journals and control publication delays.

Abstract:In this article we describe another problem with journal impact factors by showing that one journal's impact factor is dependent on other journals' publication delays. The proposed theoretical model predicts a monotonically decreasing function of the impact factor as a function of publication delay, on condition that the citation curve of the journal is monotone increasing during the publication window used in the calculation of the journal impact factor; otherwise, this function has a reversed U shape. Our findings based on simulations are verified by examining three journals in the information sciences: the Journal of Informetrics, Scientometrics, and the Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology.

Simulation Study of the Inventory Effect of the Scientific Paper Publishing Process

Abstract:By simulating the change process of the inventory of scientific papers according to a mathematical model of the publishing process, we find that publication delay would cause statistical error of the scientific paper output indicator, i.e. the quantity of published papers. Based on a simulation model and the average publication delay, we construct an optimization algorithm of the actual scientific paper output using a nonlinear least squares algorithm and validate its accuracy. To simplify the solution process, we propose an approximate algorithm of the actual scientific paper output indicator which would help science and technology managers practically deduce an approximation of the actual indicator. This has implications for strategy decision making and allocation of resources for science and technology research by policy makers.
