Effect of Unsaturated Sediment Layer on Seismic Responses of High Arch Dams

Abstract:With the Xiaowan Arch Dam taken as an example,the unsaturated sediment layer at the bottom of the reservoir was simulated as the fluid medium,which was different from the reservoir water,and the time-domain explicit finite element method was used for analysis of the effect of the unsaturated sediment layer on seismic responses of the dam under the condition of compressible reservoir water.The result shows that the unsaturated sediment layer may lead to the increase of dynamic seismic responses of the dam.
