Abstract:Near-threshold absolute photoionization and dissociative photoionization cross-sections for photon energies from 9.7 to 11.75eV are presented for 30 combustion intermediates including hydrocarbons, oxygenates and nitrogenous compounds (trans-2-butene, 2-methyl-1-butene, 3-methyl-1-butene, 2-methyl-2-butene, trans-2-hexene, 1-hexene, allene, 1,3-butadiene, 1,3-pentadiene, 1,4-pentadiene, 3-methyl-1,2-butadiene, 1,5-hexadiene, isobutane, methylcyclohexane, furan, 2,3-dihydrofuran, 2,5-dihydrofuran, 2-methyltetrahydrofuran, tetrahydropyran, n-butanal, isobutanal, 2-butenal, 3-methyl-2-butenal, ketene, allyl alcohol, methyl vinyl ketone, dimethoxymethane, methylamine, ethylamine, piperidine). Because allene is one of the most important intermediates in hydrocarbon combustion and pyrolysis processes, very accurate cross-sections for allene are desired to enable the measurement of its mole fractions in flames and to determine relative concentration ratios of allene to its isomer propyne. The cross-sections for allene have thus been re-measured with high precision using an apparatus of improved signal/noise ratio. Furthermore, these allene cross-sections yield accurate previously unmeasured cross-sections for ketene, another key combustion intermediate.

Abstract:The use of photoionization mass spectrometry for the development of quantitative kinetic models for the complex combustion chemistry of both conventional hydrocarbon fuels and oxygenated biofuels requires near-threshold measurements of absolute photoionization cross-sections for numerous reaction intermediates. Near-threshold absolute cross-sections for molecular and dissociative photoionization for 20 stable reaction intermediates (methane, ethane, propane, n-butane, cyclopropane, methylcyclopentane, 1-butene, cis-2-butene, isobutene, 1-pentene, cyclohexene, 3,3-dimethyl-1-butene, 1,3-hexadiene, 1,3-cyclohexadiene, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran, propanal, 1-butyne, 2-butyne) are presented. Previously measured total photoionization cross-sections for 9 of these molecules are in good agreement with the present results. The measurements are performed with photoionization mass spectrometry (PIMS) using a monochromated VUV synchrotron light source with an energy resolution of 40meV (fwhm) comparable to that used for flame-sampling molecular beam PIMS studies of flame chemistry and reaction kinetics.

Abstract:Criegee Intermediates (CIs) and their isomer Vinyl Hydroperoxides (VHPs) are crucial intermediates in the ozonolysis of alkenes. To better understand the underlying chemistry of CIs and VHPs, progress has been made to detect and identify them by photoionization mass spectrometric experiments. Further reliable quantitative information about these elusive intermediates requires their photoionization cross sections. The present work systematically investigated the near-threshold absolute photoionization cross-sections for ten C1–C4 CIs and VHPs, i.e., formaldehyde oxide (CH2OO), acetaldehyde oxide (syn-/anti-CH3CHOO), acetone oxide ((CH3)2COO), syn-CH3-anti-(cis-CH=CH2)COO, syn-CH3-anti-(trans-CH=CH2)COO and vinyl hydroperoxide (CH2CHOOH), 2-hydroperoxypropene (CH2=C(CH3)OOH), syn-CH2 = anti-(cis-CH=CH2)-COOH, syn-CH2 = anti-(trans-CH=CH2)COOH. The adiabatic ionization energies (AIEs) were calculated at the DLPNO-CCSD(T)/CBS level with uncertainties of less than 0.05 eV. The calculated AIEs for C1–C4 CIs and VHPs vary from 8.75 to 10.0 eV with the AIEs decreasing as the substitutions increase. Franck-Condon factors were calculated with the double Duschinsky approximation and the ionization spectra were obtained based on the calculated ionization energies. Pure electronic photoionization cross sections are calculated by the frozen-core Hartree–Fock (FCHF) approximation. The final determined absolute cross sections are around 4.5–6 Mb for the first and second ionization of CIs and 15–25 Mb for VHPs. It is found that the addition of a methyl group or an unsaturated vinyl substitution for the CIs does not substantially change the absolute value of their cross sections.

Abstract:Chlorinated organic compounds are prominently used for industrial production, but their vapors and emission byproducts can cause detrimental effects to human health and the environment. To accurately quantify organochlorine compounds, the absolute photoionization cross section of tetrachloroethylene, chlorobenzene, 1,2‐dichlorobenzene, and chloroacetone are measured using multiplexed synchrotron photoionization mass spectrometry at the Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. These measurements allow for the estimation of the C‐Cl photoionization cross section, increasing quantification accuracy of chlorinated emissions for kinetic modeling and pollutant mitigation. CBS‐QB3 calculations of adiabatic ionization energies and thermochemical appearance energies are also presented and agree well with the experimental results.

Abstract:The absolute partial and total cross sections for electron impact ionization of carbon monoxide are reported for electron energies from 350 to 8000 eV. The product ions (CO + , C + , O + , CO 2+ , C 2+ and O 2+ ) are measured by employing an ion imaging mass spectrometer and two ion-pair dissociation channels (C + + O + and C 2+ + O + ) are identified. The absolute cross sections for producing individual ions and their total, as well as for the ion-pair dissociation channels are obtained by normalizing the data of CO + to that of Ar + from CO-Ar mixture target with a fixed 1:1 ratio. The overall errors are evaluated by considering various kinds of uncertainties. A comprehensive comparison is made with the available data, which shows a good agreement with each other over the energy ranges that are overlapped. This work presents new cross section data with electron energies above 1000 eV.

Abstract:The first measurements of absolute cross-sections for near-threshold molecular and dissociative photoionization are presented for 11 small esters (methyl formate, ethyl formate, vinyl acetate, methyl propanoate, ethyl propanoate, methyl butanoate, methyl isobutanoate, methyl propenoate, ethyl propenoate, methyl crotonate, and methyl methacrylate). Photoionization mass spectrometry (PIMS) is employed with an energy resolution of 40 meV (fwhm) using a monochromated VUV synchrotron light source. An extensive literature exploring isomerization/dissociation mechanisms is available for six of these molecules. There are, however, no previous observations of dissociative ionization for four simple monounsaturated esters (methyl propenoate, ethyl propenoate, methyl crotonate, and methyl methacrylate), and dissociative ionization of ethyl propanoate has received scant attention. Photoinduced Associative Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry for the Sensitive Determination of Monoterpenes

Abstract:Recently, photoinduced associative ionization (PAI) has been demonstrated to be extremely efficient for the determination of oxygenated volatile organic compounds. However, its application for the determination hydrocarbons has not yet been reported. In this study, associative ionization of nine typical monoterpenes induced by dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) under vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light was investigated using a laboratory-constructed PAI time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PAI-TOFMS). Without doping CH2Cl2, VUV light generated ordinary photoionization mass spectra of monoterpenes that were dominated by fragment ions, while the molecular ions were inconspicuous. In contrast, doping with CH2Cl2 resulted in the appearance of mass peaks of the characteristic protonated molecular ions of the monoterpenes. The PAI method significantly enhanced the signals for the monoterpenes. The intensities of protonated molecular ions derived from PAI were amplified by 52 to 108 fold compared with those of molecular ions produced by VUV photoionization (VUV PI). With the high ionization efficiency of PAI toward monoterpenes, the sensitivities of PAI-TOFMS toward limonene, beta-ocimene, beta-myrcene, beta-pinene, and alpha-pinene were from 291 +/- 6 to 1338 +/- 20 counts pptv(-1) using an acquisition time of 30 s. The limits of detection were from 0.32 to 1.45 pptv, equivalent to between 1.92 and 8.83 ng m(-3). The applicability of this ionization mode was further characterized by the determination of monoterpenes from potted Sabina chinensis. This study provides a new and highly efficient ionization method for the determination of plant monoterpenes using mass spectrometry.
Isomer-Resolved Mobility-Mass Analysis of -Pinene Ozonolysis Products

Abstract:Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) are important sources of atmospheric aerosols. Resolving the molecular-level formation mechanisms of these HOMs from freshly emitted hydrocarbons improves the understanding of aerosol properties and their influence on the climate. In this study, we measure the electrical mobility and mass-to-charge ratio of alpha-pinene oxidation products using a secondary electrospray-differential mobility analyzer-mass spectrometer (SESI-DMA-MS). The mass-mobility spectrum of the oxidation products is measured with seven different reagent ions generated by the electrospray. We analyzed the mobility-mass spectra of the oxidation products C9-10H14-18O2-6. Our results show that acetate and chloride yield the highest charging efficiencies. Analysis of the mobility spectra suggests that the clusters have 1-5 isomeric structures (i.e., ion-molecule cluster structures with distinct mobilities), and the number is affected by the reagent ion. Most of the isomers are likely cluster isomers originating from binding of the reagent ion to different sites of the molecule. By comparing the number of observed isomers and measured mobilities and collision cross sections between standard pinanediol and pinonic acid to the values observed for C10H18O2 and C10H16O3 produced from oxidation of alpha-pinene, we confirm that pinanediol and pinonic acid are the only isomers for these elemental compositions in our experimental conditions. Our study shows that the SESI-DMA-MS produces new information from the first steps of oxidation of alpha-pinene.
Experiment Study of Oxygenates Impact on N-Heptane Flames with Tunable Synchrotron Vacuum UV Photoionization

Abstract:In order to determine the effects of oxygenates on the fuel combustion, the experiments reported here investigated the premixed n-heptane flame chemistry. Heptane typifies the large alkanes that comprise the bulk of most hydrocarbon fuels. The specific flames were low-pressure (25Torr), laminar, premixed flames of n-heptane/oxygen/argon and n-heptane/oxygenate/oxygen/argon at an equivalence ratio of 1.0. Two different fuel oxygenates (i.e. MTBE and ethanol) were tested, these are the main oxygenates used to improve motor vehicle fuel properties. The experiment was performed with tunable synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization and molecular-beam sampling mass spectrometry. Major species on the centerline of each flame were identified by measurements of the photoionization mass spectrum and photoionization efficiency (PIE) spectra. Mole fraction profiles of these species were derived at the selected photon energies near the ionization thresholds. A large amount of oxygenated intermediates was detected in the oxygenate containing flames. The species measurements indicated that MTBE and ethanol enhanced the heptane oxidation via different routes, and reduced the mole fractions of aromatics and cycloalkenes in varying degrees. The results are a useful databases for testing detailed chemical kinetic mechanism of fuel decomposition.
Shock Tube Measurements of OH Concentration Time-Histories in Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene Oxidation

Abstract:Microsecond-resolved measurements of OH concentrations time-histories were performed during the oxidation of four common monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, namely benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o-xylene, behind reflected shock waves. Ar-diluted mixtures of 200 ppm aromatics in stoichiometric O-2 were shock-heated to temperatures of 1513-1877 K and pressures of about 1.2 atm, where quantitative and time-resolved concentration time-histories of OH were measured by narrow-linewidth laser absorption using a novel solid-state laser near 308.6 nm, at the peak of the Q(1)(5) transition of the OH A-X (0,0) rovibronic band. The use of the Q(1)(5) transition improved the detection sensitivity of OH by a factor of 2.2, as compared to the R-1(5) transition utilized in most previous OH absorption measurements. The resulting OH time-history data accurately resolved the fine details in multiple stages of oxidation of these aromatics, e.g. the initial decomposition of fuel, the subsequent H-abstraction and radical scavenging, and the final radical surge and onset of ignition, thereby providing multiple valuable kinetics targets for validation and improvement of modern reaction models. Three comprehensive reaction models of aromatics combustion from recent studies were evaluated based on the current experimental results. Key reactions governing the OH time-histories were identified, and further studies on selected reaction rate constants were suggested to improve these models. To our knowledge, the current work presents the first quantitative measurements of OH time-histories in the oxidation of benzene, ethylbenzene and o-xylene, and hence provides a critical and unique contribution to the database needed for development and optimization of modern reaction kinetic models regarding aromatics combustion. Abstract:Lean and rich premixed flames of three different C3-oxygenated hydrocarbons (acetone, n-propanol, and i-propanol) at low pressure have been investigated with tunable synchrotron photoionization and molecular-beam mass spectrometry. Flame species, including isomeric intermediates, are unambiguously identified with measurements of photoionization efficiency spectra by scanning the photon energy. Mole fraction profiles of most observed species are measured by scanning the burner position at selected photon energies near ionization thresholds, and the flame temperature profiles are recorded using a Pt/Pt–13%Rh thermocouple. Compared with previous studies, some new flame species, e.g., vinyl, propargyl, allyl, ethenol, methyl ketene, propenols, ethyl ketene, methyl ethyl ketone, butenols, and 1,3,5-hexatriyne, are detected in this work, which will extend our knowledge of the intermediate pools of oxygenated hydrocarbon combustion. On the other hand, comparisons among chemical structures of these flames have been performed, based on the comprehensive experimental data. It is concluded that different structural features of fuel molecules will cause a lot of variation in intermediate pools, isomeric compositions, and formation channels of flame species, especially for the oxygenated intermediates. Combined with previous research on hydrocarbon flames, analyses of pollutant emissions and soot formation are presented. It is consistent with previous studies that the oxygenated fuels have reduced sooting tendencies and potential emissions of toxic oxygenated by-products.
Mass Spectrometry Study of Oh-Initiated Photooxidation of Toluene

Abstract:The composition of products formed from photooxidation of the aromatic hydrocarbon toluene was investigated. The OH-initiated photooxidation experiments were conducted by irradiating toluene/CH(3)ONO/NO/air mixtures in a smog chamber, the gaseous products were detected under the supersonic beam conditions by utilizing vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometer using synchrotron radiation in real-time. And an aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometer was used to provide on-line measurements of the individual secondary organic aerosol particle resulting from irradiating toluene. The experimental results demonstrated that there were some differences between the gaseous products and that of particle-phase, the products of glyoxal, 2-hydroxyl-3-oxo-butanal, nitrotoluene, and methyl-nitrophenol only existed in the particle-phase. However, furane, methylglyoxal, 2-methylfurane, benzaldehyde, cresol, and benzoic acid were the predominant photooxidation products in both the gas phase and particle phase.

Abstract:A comprehensive experimental study of the premixed benzene/oxygen/argon flame at 4.0kPa with a fuel equivalence ratio (ϕ) of 1.78 has been performed with the tunable synchrotron photoionization and molecular-beam sampling mass spectrometry. Isomers of most observed species in the flame have been unambiguously identified by measurements of the photoionization efficiency spectra. Mole fraction profiles of species up to C16H10 have been measured at the selective photon energies near ionization thresholds, and the flame temperature profile is obtained using Pt/Pt–13%Rh thermocouple. Compared with previous studies on benzene flames by Bittner and Howard, and by Defoeux et al., a number of new species are observed in the present work. These new combustion intermediates should be included in the kinetic models of the growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and benzene oxidation. Free radicals detected in the flame include CH3, C2H, C2H3, C2H5, C3H, C3H3, C3H5, C4H, C4H3, C4H5, C4H7, C5H3, C5H5, C5H7, C6H5, C6H5O, C7H7, and C9H7. More significantly, isomers of some PAHs have been identified, which should be of importance in understanding the mechanism of soot formation.

Abstract:In this work a theoretical study for photoionization of Ethylene oxide is presented. The photoionization cross section (PICS) for each of the nine valence orbitals and also the summed cross sections are presented. Electronic structure calculations are done to obtain the required molecular properties and the Variational Schwinger method with Pad ́e approximants is used to calculate the PICS. The results are shown in four different approaches: dipole-length/velocity form, static-exchange and static-exchange-polarization levels. The partial PICS for each orbital shows which symmetries of continuum states are responsible for resonance features and how the polarization effects affect the cross sections magnitudes near the threshold. PICS calculations indicate which parent ion state is generated according to the corresponding ionization energies. A correlation is proposed suggesting that the different ionic fragments can be preferentially produced by different electronic states of the parent ion, based on their ionic fragment appearance energies. The summed cross section of all valence orbitals of Ethylene oxide is compared with the results of Acetaldehyde and the analysis suggests that the photoionization cross sections, in a given energy range, can be used to identify these isomers. A comparison of our results for EtO and Acetaldehyde with available experimental results for Acetaldehyde and Ethenol demonstrated the the results of three isomers are similar in magnitude in the energy range from 9 to 12 eV. Furthermore, for acetaldehyde, we observed quantitative agreement with the experiment, indicating the reliability of our calculations.

Abstract:Laminar premixed low-pressure flames fueled by either one of the four isomers of butanol were investigated by a molecular-beam photoionization mass spectrometer using vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron radiation as the ionization source. The photoionization efficiency (PIE) spectra of most flame intermediates were measured between 7.75 and 11.00 eV. By comparing the resulting PIE spectra to known ionization energies (IEs) or known PIE spectra of pure substances, most hydrocarbon and oxygenated combustion intermediates, including some radicals, in the mass range from m/z=15 to 106 were assigned and identified in the four butanol flames. The results show that the higher-mass oxygenated species in butanol flames are strongly affected by the fuel structure, while many hydrocarbon isomers appear almost independent of the fuel structure. The respective dissociation mechanisms of the fuels, including complex fission, simple fission, and H-atom abstraction, are in good agreement with previous results from nonpremixed butanol flames.

Abstract:Oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) have attracted growing attention due to their toxicological harmfulness and significant role in soot formation. This study comprehensively investigates the thermochemistry of OPAH species and relevant radicals via quantum-chemical calculations. Temperature-dependent enthalpy of formation, entropy, and heat capacity for C 5 C 18 OPAHs (59 molecules and 33 radicals) are consistently determined at the M06–2X/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. Considerable differences are found to be introduced by different methods when calculating electronic energies, and the G3 method outperforms the composite compound methods G3/G4/CBS-APNO. The calculated thermochemical properties from the G3 method show excellent agreement with literature data. An accurate thermochemistry database for OPAHs is thus developed. In addition, the existing group additivity (GA) method does not apply to OPAHs since the group additivity values (GAVs) derived from small hydrocarbons fail to predict large polycyclic species. Based on our dataset, GAVs are obtained from combinatorial considerations. The updated GAVs can be applied with enhanced confidence to estimate the thermochemical parameters at different temperatures for larger OPAHs where such high-accuracy quantum chemistry calculations are intractable. Abstract:The gas-phase organic compounds resulting from OH-initiated photooxidation of isoprene have been investigated on-line by VUV photoionization mass spectrometry based on synchrotron radiation for the first time. The photoionization efficiency curves of the corresponding gaseous products as well as the chosen standards have been deduced by gating the interested peaks in the photoionization mass spectra while scanning the photon energy simultaneously, which permits the identification of the pivotal gaseous products of the photooxidation of isoprene, such as formaldehyde (10.84 eV), formic acid (11.38 eV), acetone (9.68 eV), glyoxal (9.84 eV), acetic acid (10.75 eV), methacrolein (9.91 eV), and methyl vinyl ketone (9.66 eV). Proposed reaction mechanisms leading to the formation of these key products were discussed, which were completely consistent with the previous works of different groups. The capability of synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectrometry to directly identify the chemical composition of the gaseous products in a simulation chamber has been demonstrated, and its potential application in related studies of atmospheric oxidation of ambient volatile organic compounds is anticipated.
The photoionization of methoxymethanol: Fingerprinting a reactive C2 oxygenate in a complex reactive mixture

Abstract:Methoxymethanol (CH3OCH2OH) is a reactive C2 ether-alcohol that is formed by coupling events in both heterogeneous and homogeneous systems. It is found in complex reactive environments—for example those associated with catalytic reactors, combustion systems, and liquid-phase mixtures of oxygenates. Using tunable synchrotron-generated vacuum-ultraviolet photons between 10.0 and 11.5 eV, we report on the photoionization spectroscopy of methoxymethanol. We determine that the lowest-energy photoionization process is the dissociative ionization of methoxymethanol via H-atom loss to produce [C2H5O2]+, a fragment cation with a mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) = 61.029. We measure the appearance energy of this fragment ion to be 10.24 ± 0.05 eV. The parent cation is not detected in the energy range examined. To elucidate the origin of the m/z = 61.029 (C2H5O2) fragment, we used automated electronic structure calculations to identify key stationary points on the cation potential energy surface and compute conformer-specific microcanonical rate coefficients for the important unimolecular processes. The calculated H-atom dissociation pathway results in a [C2H5O2]+ fragment appearance at 10.21 eV, in excellent agreement with experimental results.

Abstract:The allyl radical has been observed in a low-pressure premixed gasoline/oxygen/argon flame by using tunable vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry. The ionization potential of the allyl radical is derived to be (8.13 +/- 0.02) eV from photoionization efficiency curve. In addition, a high level ab initio Gaussian-3 (G3) method was used to calculate the energies of the radical and its cation. The calculated adiabatic ionization potential is 8.18 eV, which is in excellent agreement with the experimental value. The result is helpful for identifying the allyl radical formed from other flames and for understanding the mechanism of soot formation.

Abstract:The photoionization and dissociative photoionization of o-xylene have been studied using synchrotron radiation vacuum ultraviolet light with the photon energy in the range of 8.0–13.0 eV. The ionization energy of o-xylene and the appearance energies for the main fragment ions $$\hbox {C}_{\mathrm {8}}\hbox {H}_{\mathrm {9}}^{+}$$ , $$\hbox {C}_{\mathrm {7}}\hbox {H}_{\mathrm {7}}^{+}$$ and $$\hbox {C}_{\mathrm {6}}\hbox {H}_{\mathrm {6}}^{+}$$ were determined to be 8.45, 11.08, 11.47 and 11.17 eV, respectively, with photoionization efficiency spectra (PIES). Three dissociation pathways of parent ions are investigated by experimental photoionization and the quantum-chemical calculations. The fragment ions $$\hbox {C}_{\mathrm {7}}\hbox {H}_{\mathrm {7}}^{\mathrm {+}}$$ derived from parent ions involved hydrogen atom transfer rather than direct dissociation. Particularly, detailed mechanisms of dissociation $$\hbox {C}_{\mathrm {6}}\hbox {H}_{\mathrm {6}}^{+}$$ are presented for the first time in this work. In addition, the geometries of the intermediates (INTs), transition states (TSs) and products have been performed at B3LYP/6-311 $$+ \,+$$ G (d, p) level. The mechanisms of dissociative photoionization of o-xylene and the INTs and TSs involved are discussed in detail.
