Abstract:ADHD is a common behavioral disorder characterized by the symptoms of inattention,hyperactivity,and behavior impulse.Also,ADHD is a type of disease which often occurs in combination with one or more mental or non- mental disorders. Previous studies on comorbidities of ADHD mostly are confined to the symptoms of one or several comorbidities,so the systematic understanding of this issue doesnot spread. Based on the brief history of past research,comorbidities of ADHD were divided into three parts,pre- comorbidity,simultaneous comorbidity and post- comorbidity,according to the temporal order of occurrence.Some comorbidities may present before the appearance of first definite ADHD symptoms. They are classified as pre- comorbidities.For example,behavioral abnormalities and disturbance of sleep may precede the first clinically relevant ADHD symptoms. Simultaneous comorbidities coincide with the time when ADHD symptoms reach a clinically significant level. Researchers find that some people with ADHD are diagnosed with non- organic enuresis and encopresis when ADHD symptoms reach a clinically significant level. What's more,some specific developmental disorders,such as develop- mental dyslexia which is characterized by difficulties with reading comprehension,reading decoding,reading fluency and spelling,may manifest as simultaneous comorbidity with ADHD.The majority of comorbidity,however,appears after the onset of ADHD in the course of disease; we classify these comorbidities as post- comorbidity. A total of 10- 40% of children and adolescents with ADHD show comorbid affective disorders,mostly depression with the symptomatology of low or irritated mood,loss of interests and pleasure in usually enjoyable activities,reduced appetite,etc.These disorders in people with ADHD often occur several years after the onset of ADHD,so they are classified as post- comorbidities.As with depression,researchers find that people with ADHD show symptoms of anxiety disorders and OCD later on in the course of the disorder. For example,about 50% of children with ADHD displayed comorbid anxiety disorder,up to 30% of children and adolescents with OCD present ADHD symptoms. On the other hand,there is substantial evidence that ADHD,oppositional defiant disorder,conduct disorder and substanceabuse disorders shows at least to some extent an etiological overlap.Therefore,the researchers will have a relatively systematic understanding of this issue based on this classification method. To understand the development of comorbidity and improve diagnosis and treatment of ADHD,longitudinal study on patients with ADHD should be strengthened in the future.
