AIDS Prevention Education Needs in Street Children

Abstract:Objective To understand the knowledge of AIDS prevention among the street children, so as to provide evidence for AIDS prevention education. Methods Fifty-three street children aged 13-15 years were interviewed face-to-face by anonymous questionnaire in Zhengzhou and Chengdu in 2006. Results Of these street children, 60.4 %, 54.7 %, 35.8 % and 47.2 % knew that HIV can be transmitted by sharing needle or syringe, heterosexual intercourse, homosexual intercourse, and pregnant mother with HIV to the baby respectively, 41.5 %, 35.8 % and 26.4 % of children knew that HIV can not be transmitted by hug, attending class m the same classroom, and having dinner together. The knowledge of the street children was mainly from mass media (56.6 %), such as TV, book/journal/newspaper, broadcast, and internet. Thirteen point two percent of the children reported that they had sexual intercourse, and 7.5 % answered that their 1st sexual intercourse was unwanted. Sixty-seven point three percent of street children hope to learn AIDS prevention knowledge. Conclusion Street children lacked AIDS prevention knowledge. The findings suggested that more attention should be paid to AIDS prevention education in street children, and to expand AIDS prevention knowledge by the educated street children to other children or their peers.
