Abstract:Objective To determine the role of C-reactive protein(CRP) in evaluating the severity of active inflammatory bowel disease. Methods Analysis was used to estimate the correlation of CRP with erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR),and mean platelet volume in 52 patients with active inflammatory bowel disease and 43 patients with inflammatory bowel disease in remission. The effects on disease severity were analyzed subsequently. Results CRP was found to be significantly higher in sera of patients with active inflammatory bowel disease than in patients in remission. The sera levels of CRP in inflammatory bowel disease at severe stage were significantly higher than those of medium stage(P0.05).CRP was observed to be slightly increased in sera of patients at mild stage.A strong positive correlation existed between CRP level and the severity of active inflammatory bowel disease(r= 0.81,P0.05).CRP in sera of patients with active inflammatory bowel disease had negative relevance to mean platelet volume. Conclusion The increase of CRP can reflect the severity of active inflammatory bowel disease.
