Abstract:Along with the development of globalization, cultural differences among different countries have been brought into our focus. Family education, plays an irreplaceable role in our educational process, and is also a special and essential aspect in various cultures. This paper will analyze the differences of family education between the Chinese culture and American culture through Amy Tan’s work The Joy Luck Club. The differences mainly include the aspects of aim of education, content of education, requirements of education, views of family relationship and different ways used in education. Through comparing the different results brought by different styles of family education, it helps readers to learn cultural differences between China and the United States in the aspect of family education, and make them respect different cultures and realize the importance of family education.

Abstract:Education plays a pivotal role in a country’s progress and rejuvenation. As the most basic and vital stage in education, parenting exerts an invaluable role in supporting the progress of children. Under the influence of production mode, geographical environment, national policy and other factors, education in different countries takes on a unique and distinguishable character in correspondence with its cultural and geographical contexts. China and America are two prominent countries on the world map which represent, in many ways, divergent national culture models. Taking Strodtbeck and Kluckhohn’s theory of cultural values combined with Hofstede’s national culture model as the theoretical framework, and the novel The Joy Luck Club as data, the study investigates differences in Chinese and American parenting in terms of cultural values from the perspectives of humankind and nature, time orientation, activity orientation and social relationships. Comparing the two styles of parenting, the study argues that Chinese parenting is distinguishable from American parenting in many aspects, including parenting idea, parenting content and parenting method. Adopting a monitoring role, the Chinese parents foreground criticism in parenting, whereas American parents tend to prefer encouragement as the cornerstone of their parenting style, demonstrating a democratic approach and magnanimity towards their children.
A Contrastive Study on Chinese and American Food Cultures

Abstract:Dietary culture is the sum total of human dietary behavior,conception,technology and its products.It shows human natural choice and dietary way of life that is suited to special geographical environment and humane environment through common practice.Cultural differences between China and America create the differences of food culture,which come from the different cultural values,ways of thinking and philosophy.By comparing the different cultural values between China and America,the paper mainly makes a research on the differences of American and Chinese food culture from the aspects of dietary conception,structure and table manners.It also states the food culture opposites in unity between these two countries,points out the trend and inevitability of their blending together.Lastly,it makes some suggestions on the development ways for Chinese fast food industry.Understanding their differences and rectifying the attitudes towards the individual culture will help to avoid the contradictions and conflicts brought forth by different food culture and values,and thus promoting culture exchange and development of the two countries.

Abstract:With the development of economic globalization, the interactions between different cultures have been increasingly intensified. People of different culture background, word views and values may inevitably encounter diverse problems and consequently misunderstanding and conflict may arise in cross-cultural communication. This calls for our research into different cultures so that we can find our problem-solving methods and strategies. Diet that contains eating habits and etiquette is the necessity in the life and also the development of human beings, which is a good way to know different country’s culture. So the eating habits and etiquette are problems that are worth our attention. The author here will study the differences between Chinese and Western eating habits and etiquette through the conception, cooking methods, ingredients, order of serving dishes, sense of eating, dining etiquette, historical and cultural reasons.

Abstract:Chinese-American writers who live in both Chinese and American cultures are the most sensitive to cultural conflict and integration. Amy Tan is one of those writers who probe deeply into the relationship between the Chinese and American cultures. The Joy Luck Club, a novel that tells stories of four Chinese mothers and their American-born daughters, has caused a great sensation inside and outside the United States and made Tan a famous writer. From the perspective of intercultural communication, Cultural conflicts between four couples of mother and daughter, between husbands and wives arising from the difference in cultural background are looked into from the angles of Chinese obedience to parents and American independence and democracy, Chinese women’s submissiveness and American women’s independence, Chinese family’s honor and American individual achievement, Chinese high-context culture and American low- context culture, Chinese superstition and American science. The causes of the conflicts are also discussed in the aspects of Chinese culture and American culture. Chinese mothers are deeply influenced by the concept of "Three Obedience and Four Virtues", "Resign oneself to Adversity", Etc. However, American daughters are born in the culture that emphasizes "Individualism, Equality, Independence and Freedom." In this thesis, it is also put forward that despite the conflicts, mutual compatibility of two cultures is unavoidable and an inescapable tendency, which reflects the development from the clash to the coexistence of the two cultures in the context of globalization.

Abstract:The Joy Luck Club , a masterpiece by Amy Tan, tells the story of the mother-daughter conflicts, focusing on the differences between Chinese culture and American culture. According to the theory of high-context and low-context cultures put forward by Eward T. Hall, Chinese culture can be classified as a high-context culture, while American culture is classified as a low-context culture. In light of high-context and low-context cultures theory, this paper deeply analyzes mother-daughter conflicts in The Joy Luck Club , aiming to provide reference for exploring the right way to resolve cultural conflict. In this paper, the author introduces the main differences of high and low-context cultures, on the basis of which the cultural conflict between Chinese and American reflected in The Joy Luck Club were summarized and analyzed. The conflicts can be divided into three aspects: different ways of language expression, different understandings of the relationship between parents and children and different ways of emotional expression.

Abstract:Mulan legend has traveled from Chinese culture to America undergoing the process of cultural filtration. Compared with Mulan in classical Chinese literature, the system of representations behind Mulan in America has undergone variation. But how and why does it vary? And what is the significance of the variation? This paper is going to analyze the cause of the variation of Mulan by reviewing the changes and development in both China and America from the perspective of the Variation Theory of Comparative Literature. This paper claims that Mulan has developed into a new system of representations via cultural filtering and authors’ reinterpreting when traveling to America. Yet, the cultural codes behind Mulan that have variated do not merely reveal the differences between Chinese and American culture but more importantly the difference between premodern and modern ethics, between ancient China and the modern West.

Abstract:Food plays a crucial role in the growth of society and human civilization. It is an essential premise for human existence. However, different states have different food and food habits. That is because they have different cultures, especially food culture. This thesis expounds the differences in terms of food culture between China and western countries. By analyzing these differences, we can improve our ability in cultural communication. Food culture is a special cultural phenomenon. This thesis endeavors to analyze the cultural differences in terms of Chinese and Western food cultures from the perspectives of concept, content, etiquette, and the eating ways of food, and points out that with the development of cross-cultural communication, more communication and interaction will arise between Chinese and Western food cultures and they will develop together.

Abstract:This paper spotlights one of the most influential Chinese American novels, ‘The Joy Luck Club’. Broadly adhering to the principles and orientations of Eco-discourse analysis and using Halliday’s systemic-functional grammar as a framework of analysis, this study uncovers ideologies pointing to an asymmetrical power structure between the mother and the daughter and discusses the underlying Chinese philosophy of mother, which helps daughter find her genuine identity. This paper concludes with revealing the true contradiction behind the conflict of mother-daughter, i.e., the two distinct value systems, and expect people to think and act ecologically, promoting the development of eastern eco-ideology.

Abstract:Besides Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan, and Gish Jen came to the literary scene with their debut novelsThe Joy Luck ClubandTypical American. Since the 1970s, the "Chin-Kingston debate" on "the real and the fake" representation of Chinese has aroused heated discussion among scholars and Chinese American writers. This article aims at pinpointing the similarities and differences between both writers in their literary representation of Chinese and "Chinese America" in the contemporary American literature. Besides the shared writing techniques between the two writers, they differ greatly in their dealing with the gender knots, Chinese American experience in the U.S. and their respective attitudes that lurking behind their words. Hence, in the light of this perspective, we can better grasp the "typical American" writing strategy of Gish Jen and the typical recourse to Chinese elements in the "Joy Luck Club" stories by Amy Tan, which will shed light on later Chinese American writing.
Analysis on the Differences between Chinese and Western Marriage Culture in the Film The Wedding Banquet

Abstract:The Wedding Banquet is a movie directed by Ang Lee and released in the United States in 1993. The film tells a series of absurd stories from the wedding of Wai-tung, a gay man. The movie shows the two generations’ absolute different attitudes towards marriage issues, vividly demonstrates the different marriage cultures in China and the west, and creates a strong contrast. This paper takes the content of the movie into account, and specifically explains the differences between Chinese and western marriage culture from three aspects: wedding ceremony, purpose of marriage and attitude toward same-sex marriage, and analyzes the reasons for the differences from the level of different cultural backgrounds in China and the west.
