Abstract:A general approach is proposed to design a mixed H-2/H-infinity. robust controller for SMES via genetic algorithms. The proposed mixed H-2/H-infinity control design is to find an internally stabilizing controller that minimizes a H-2/H-infinity performance index of error signal subject to an inequality constraint on the H-infinity norm of the closed-loop system. This problem can be interpreted as a problem of optimal tracking performance subject to a robust stability constraint that is solved by a modified genetic searching algorithm. In contrast with the conventional design methods of robust controller, the proposed approach is rather simple and easy to be employed for the industrial applications. The proposed approach is used to design a robust PID controller for a superconducting magnetic energy (SMES) unit. The simulation results indicate that the derived PID controller can damp out the oscillations rapidly after a large disturbance under the different operating conditions.
