Clinical Investigation of the Expression of Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 and Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase in Prehamatomal Brain Regions in Patients with Hypertensive Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Abstract:Objective To investigate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1(TIMP-1)in prehamatomal brain regions in patients with hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage and its role in the development of brain edema. Methods 16 samples were obtained from the perihematoma region of hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage patients and the expressions of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 were detected immunohistochemically. Prehamatomal edema volumes were measured according to CT scan. Results The brain edema was obvious in the brain tissue around the hematoma caused by hypertensive intracerebra1 hemorrhage. There were no evident expressions of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 in the control group. Compared with the control group,the expressions of MMP-9 and TIMP-1 significantly increased in the hemorrhage group(P0.0l). Conclusion The up-regulated expression of MMP-9 might have an important ro1e in the occurrence and development of the brain edema.
