Abstract:The natural frequency and transient response of FGM cylindrical shells under arbitrary boundary conditions are performed in present work. A novel semi-analytical method, which integrates Durbin’s inverse Laplace transform and the differential quadrature method, is developed to analyze the dynamical behavior of cylindrical shells. Durbin’s numerical inversion method is selected to gain time domain solutions. The trigonometric series expansion is used in the circumferential direction whereas the use of differential quadrature method provides numerical solutions in terms of axial direction. Comparisons show that the calculated natural frequencies are in good agreement with results in the literature. Convergence study illustrates that the developed method is rapidly convergent with the increase of sampling points, and the calculated transient response of the cylindrical shell is validated by comparing with Navier’s solution. The influences of boundary conditions, material graded indexes, temperature changes, elastic foundation coefficients and geometric parameters on transient response are analyzed. Numerical results indicate that the peak displacement of cylindrical shells increases with the increase of temperature changes and length-radius ratios or the decrease of elastic foundation coefficients and thickness-radius ratios.

Abstract:Approximate or exact Riemann solvers play a key role in Godunov‐type methods. In this paper, three approximate Riemann solvers, the MFCAV, DKWZ and weak wave approximation method schemes, are investigated through numerical experiments, and their numerical features, such as the resolution for shock and contact waves, are analyzed and compared. Based on the analysis, two new adaptive Riemann solvers for general equations of state are proposed, which can resolve both shock and contact waves well. As a result, an ALE method based on the adaptive Riemann solvers is formulated. A number of numerical experiments show good performance of the adaptive solvers in resolving both shock waves and contact discontinuities. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:By means of the two-dimensional basic equations of transversely isotropic magneto-electroelastic media and the strict differential operator theorem, the general solution in the. case of distinct eigenvalues is derived, in which all mechanical, electric and magnetic quantities are expressed in four harmonic displacement functions. Based on this general solution in the case of distinct eigenvalues, a series of problems is solved by the trial-and-error method, including magneto-electro-elastic rectangular beam under uniform tension, electric displacement and magnetic induction, pure shearing and pure bending, cantilever beam with point force, point charge or point current at free end, and cantilever beam subjected to uniformly distributed loads. Analytical solutions to various problems are obtained.

Abstract:The variational iteration method (VIM) is applied to obtain analytical solutions for the time-dependent Emden-Fowler type equations and wave-type equations with singular behavior. In this method, general Lagrange multipliers are introduced to construct correction functional and identified optimally via variational theory for the problems. It is well known that one of the advantages of the variational iteration method is the free choice of initial approximation. Therefore, we use this advantage to construct initial values without unknown parameters. Some of the nonlinear and linear equations are examined by the modified method to illustrate the effectiveness and convenience of the method in solving equations with singularity, where the convergence of the result is observed.
Fundamental Solutions for Transversely Isotropic Magneto-Electro-elastic Media and Boundary Integral Formulation

Abstract:To obtain the fundamental solutions for computation of magneto-electro-elastic media by the boundary element method, the general solutions in the case of distinct eigenvalues are derived and expressed in five harmonic functions from the governing equations and the strict differential operator theorem. On the basis of these general solutions, the fundamental solution of infinite magneto-electro-elastic solid are obtained with the method of trial-and-error. Finally, the boundary integral formulation is derived and the corresponding boundary element method program is implemented to perform two numerical calculations (a column under uni-axial tension, uniform electric displacement or uniform magnetic induction, an annular plate simply-supported on outer and inner surfaces under axial loads). The numerical results agree well with the analytical ones.

Abstract:Vector form of intrinsic finite element (VFIFE) is a numerical method widely used in solid mechanics. However, it's hard to extend the VFIFE method to fluid mechanics since the traditional VFIFE method fails to reflect the analytical equilibrium of multiple variables in the continuum. Therefore, under the framework of analytical mechanics, this paper proposes Lagrange's equation of the second kind in fluid mechanics with the extremum condition of Lagrange power functional. And a vectorized motion equation of incompressible viscous fluids is deduced from Lagrange's equation. By using several efficient algorithms in the finite difference method (FDM) and the finite element method (FEM), the NS equation is decomposed into four governing equations of vector form for fluid mechanics. In addition, with the application of the classic Smagorinsky sub-grid scale model in large eddy simulation (LES), this paper puts forward turbulence modelling with VFIFE procedure, and a corresponding MATLAB program is developed. Two typical examples are given to demonstrate the applicability and efficiency of the proposed large eddy simulation with VFIFE method. The proposed algorithm can effectively eliminate the non-physical oscillation of the pressure, and obtain much accurate results with a small number of grids.

Abstract:The dynamic behavior of cylindrical shells with arbitrary boundaries is studied in this paper. Love's shell theory and Hamilton's principle are employed to derive the motion equations for cylindrical shells. A semi-analytical methodology, which incorporates Durbin's inverse Laplace transform, differential quadrature method and Fourier series expansion technique, is proposed to investigate this phenomenon. The use of the differential quadrature method provides a solution in terms of the axial direction whereas the use of Durbin's numerical inversion method generates a solution in the time domain. Comparison of calculated frequency parameters to that derived from the literature illustrates the effectiveness of the method. Specifically, convergence tests indicate that the present approach has a rapid convergence, the time-history response and the Navier's solution are in great agreement. Comparisons between time-history responses derived by two shell theories show that the results fit well with each other when the thickness-radius ratios are small enough. An analysis of the influences of boundaries on the time-history response of cylindrical shells indicates that the peak displacement is closely related to the degrees of freedom of boundaries. The influences of the length-radius ratios and the thickness-radius ratios on the peak displacement are further investigated.
Semi-analytical Solution for Dynamic Behavior of a Fluid-Conveying Pipe with Different Boundary Conditions

Abstract:This paper analyzes the dynamic behavior of a fluid-conveying pipe with different pipe end boundary conditions. The pipe is considered to be an Euler-Bernoulli beam, and a motion equation for the pipe is derived using Hamilton's principle. A semi-analytical method, which includes the differential quadrature method (DQM) and the Laplace transform and its inverse, is used to obtain a model for the dynamic behavior of the pipe. The use of DQM provides a solution in terms of pipe length whereas use of the Laplace transform and its inverse produce a solution in terms of time. An examination of the results of sampling pipe displacement at different numbers of sample points along the pipe length shows that the method we developed has a fast convergence rate. The frequency and critical velocity of the fluid-conveying pipe derived by DQM are exactly the same as the exact solution. The numerical results given by the model match well with the result obtained using the Galerkin method. The effect on pipe displacement of the pipe end boundary conditions is investigated, and it increases with an increase in the edge degrees of freedom. The results obtained in this paper can serve as benchmark data in further research.

Abstract:In this paper, an optimal decomposition algorithm is introduced to solve a kind of nonlinear fourth-order Emden–Fowler equations (EFEs) that appear in many applied fields. Transforming the Emden–Fowler equation into a Volterra integral equivalent equation allows us to deal with the singularity at the endpoint x=0 . This conversion also helps to reduce the computational cost of solving the problem. The existence and uniqueness of the solution of each integral equation obtained are established in the corresponding theorems. The convergence analysis further supports the theoretical findings. The accuracy and efficiency of the new method are tested against the existing method (Wazwaz et al., 2014) using numerous cases, and the results show that the presented scheme is a reliable method for computing approximate series solutions and even exact solutions. In addition, the new technique overcomes the drawback of the existing method, that provides only an approximation within a limited interval.

Abstract:In this paper, an analytical method, which may be applied to solve the Laplace's or Poission's equation, is introduced. The analytical method has been used to solve some 2-D electrostatic field problems. The calculated results have been compared with that obtained by the separation of variables or by BEM, which is expressed by the direct integral equation, respectively. Compared results show that the analytical method introduced has a lot of merits.

Abstract:A new step-by-step integral procedure of dynamics equations is presented. The general expression of solution of dynamics equations is obtained on the basis of the homogenous analytical solutions of dynamics equations. The explicit analytical integration algorithm, which is characterized by fourth-order accuracy, self-starting and self-correcting, is employed to discretize the equivalent load terms at the right-hand terms of the equations. The transfer matrix is not limited by time step size. If the group solution method is used, the size of stiffness matrix and mass matrix will be reduced and the method will be more cost-effective. Numerical examples show that the results are highly accurate in comparison with those of Newmark, Wilson- Houbolt and central difference method. Moreover, the present results are closer to the exact solution, than those of other methods. In addition, the method is also suitable for treatment of nonlinear dynamics problems since no iterative procedure is needed in the present algorithm.

Abstract:An analytical method and a semi-analytical method are proposed to analyze the dynamic thermo-elastic behavior of structures resting on a Pasternak foundation. The analytical method employs a finite Fourier integral transform and its inversion, as well as a Laplace transform and its numerical inversion. The semi-analytical method employs the state space method, the differential quadrature method (DQM), and the numerical inversion of the Laplace transform. To demonstrate the two methods, a simply supported Euler–Bernoulli beam of variable length is considered. The governing equations of the beam are derived using Hamilton's principle. A comparison between the results of analytical method and the results of semi-analytical method is carried out, and it is shown that the results of the two methods generally agree with each other, sometimes almost perfectly. A comparison of natural frequencies between the semi-analytical method and the experimental data from relevant literature shows good agreements between the two kinds of results, and the semi-analytical method is validated. Different numbers of sampling points along the axial direction are used to carry out convergence study. It is found that the semi-analytical method converges rapidly. The effects of different beam lengths and heights, thermal stress, and the spring and shear coefficients of the Pasternak medium are also investigated. The results obtained in this paper can serve as benchmark in further research.

Abstract:This article presents a novel approach using the Fibonacci wavelet collocation method (FWCM) for the numerical solution of Emden-Fowler-type equations. The Emden-Fowler equations are a class of nonlinear differential equations that arise in various fields of science and engineering, particularly in astrophysics and fluid dynamics. Due to their nonlinear and singular nature, the conventional approaches to solving these equations encounter difficulties. This method is particularly effective in handling problems with singularities, as it adapts naturally to the local behavior of the solution. Here, we introduced the Fibonacci wavelet collocation method as a powerful numerical technique for tackling Emden-Fowler-type equations. The Fibonacci wavelet basis functions possess remarkable properties, including compact support, making them well-suited for approximating solutions to differential equations. The main advantage of this approach lies in its ability to reduce the computational complexity associated with solving Emden-Fowler equations, resulting in accurate and efficient solutions. Comparative analyses with other established numerical methods reveal its superior accuracy and convergence rate performance. Further, several examples demonstrate the method's flexibility when dealing with different singularity levels. This paper contributes to numerical analysis by introducing the Fibonacci wavelet method as a robust tool for solving Emden-Fowler-type equations.

Abstract:By means of the vector weight function and the weighted residual method, the detailed implementation of the numerical model in a harmonic electromagnetic problem, which is formulated with the A ‐ϕ‐ A method, is completed by applying the element‐free Galerkin method (EFGM) in the cylindrical coordinates. Moreover, the impositions of the essential boundary conditions and the interface conditions (ICs) are also discussed. Furthermore, an axisymmetric longitudinal flux induction heating problem is applied to validate the effectiveness of the EFGM for the electromagnetic problem. The computational results agree well with those of the finite element method (FEM). It proves that the numerical model of the harmonic electromagnetic problem is correct. In addition, the appropriate value of the penalty coefficient for the electromagnetic field ICs is given. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:On the basis of the developed coupled non-Fick diffusion and mechanics theory, the approximate analytical solutions of concentration, stress and displacement are respectively derived by using the Laplace transform and inverse Laplace transform. There exist two discontinuous points in both the stress and concentration solutions, while the displacement is continuous. Moreover, the two discontinuous points verify the interaction between the non-Fick diffusion and mechanics. Then, numerical examples about the stress, concentration and displacement field are carried out to show the coupled behavior. Finally, the non-Fick effect is graphically obvious in the results.
Fixed point analytical method for nonlinear differential equations

Abstract:In this paper, a new analytical method, which is based on the fixed point concept in functional analysis (namely, the fixed point analytical method (FPM)), is proposed to acquire the explicit analytical solutions of nonlinear differential equations. The key idea of this approach is to construct a contractive map which replaces the nonlinear differential equation into a series of linear differential equations. Usually, the series of linear equations can be solved relatively easily and have explicit analytical solutions. The FPM is different from all existing analytical methods, such as the well-known perturbation technique applied in weakly nonlinear problems, because it is independent of any small physical or artificial parameters at all; thus, it can handle more nonlinear problems, including strongly nonlinear ones. Two typical cases are investigated by FPM in detail and the comparison with the numerical results shows that the present method is one of high accuracy and efficiency. [DOI: 10.1115/1.4006337]

Abstract:The iterative decomposition coupling formulation of the precise integration finite element method (FEM) and the time domain boundary element method (TD-BEM) is presented for elstodynamic problems. In the formulation, the FEM node and the BEM node are not required to be coincident on the common interface between FEM and BEM sub-domains, therefore, the FEM and BEM are independently discretized. The force and displacement converting matrices are used to transfer data between FEM and BEM nodes on the common interface between the FEM and BEM sub-domains, to renew the nodal variables in the process of the iterations for the un-coincident FEM node and BEM node. The iterative coupling formulation for elastodynamics in current paper is of high modeling accuracy, due to the semi-analytical solution incorporated in the precise integration finite element method. The decomposition coupling formulation for elastodynamics is verified by examples of a cantilever bar under a Heaviside-type force and a harmonic load.

Abstract:Through analysis of the coupling problem between structure and ideal liquid, some researches were done on the dynamic responses of solid liquid coupling system using FEM. The precise time integration method, Wilson θ method and Newmark method were used. Some numerical examples were given and the results show that the precise time integration method is in high agreement with the exact solution, not being restricted with the time step, and with a little amount of calculation work. It is adaped to the analysis of dynamic response of solid liquid coupling system.

Abstract:Due to the low computational efficiency of the Improved Element-Free Galerkin (IEFG) method, efficiently solving three-dimensional (3D) Laplace problems using meshless methods has been a longstanding research direction. In this study, we propose the Dimension Coupling Method (DCM) as a promising alternative approach to address this challenge. Based on the Dimensional Splitting Method (DSM), the DCM divides the 3D problem domain into a coupling of multiple two-dimensional (2D) problems which are handled via the IEFG method. We use the Finite Element Method (FEM) in the third direction to combine the 2D discretized equations, which has advantages over the Finite Difference Method (FDM) used in traditional methods. Our numerical verification demonstrates the DCM's convergence and enhancement of computational speed without losing computational accuracy compared to the IEFG method. Therefore, this proposed method significantly reduces computational time and costs when solving 3D Laplace equations with natural or mixed boundary conditions in a dimensional splitting direction, and expands the applicability of the dimension splitting EFG method.
