Abstract:The garden of Xiling Seal Engraver's Society is the model of Chinese literati garden,is known as the best in the world. The scenery inscriptions in the garden embody the traditional features of Chinese garden. Referring to historical records, this paper analyzes the techniques of scenery inscriptions and the relationship between culture and garden landscape. It reviews the cultural origin and philosophical ideas, as well as the artistic beauty of the garden. By doing so, this paper provides a reference to the scenery inscriptions of modern gardens.

Abstract:Xiao Garden, a famous garden of Yangzhou in 18th century, was originally a nursery for Chinese herbaceous peony that had been famous since 10th century. The land of the nursery was bought by Chen Meng-xing, a secluded member of Imperial Academy in 1716. Chen transformed the nursery into a private garden for clan use. The private garden was then turned into one of the three famous places for literati' gathering in Yangzhou. In the middle of 18th century, the name of Xiao Garden was changed to ‘Xiao-yuan-hua-rui’. During that time, the garden was a key place along the landscape between Hong Bridge and Ping-shan Hall. The change of Xiao Garden from an economic nursery to an aesthetic private garden, such a process appears ubiquitous in the transformation of gardens of Jiang-nan. The rapid change from a private garden for clan to a scenic spot opening to city residents, however, occurred only in Yang-zhou of the middle of 18th century. How was a private garden built, transformed and integrated? What was transformed in its spatial structure? Whether the historical changes to Xiao Garden present any rules? Yet, the historical Xiao Garden no longer exists. This article integrates historical texts and pictorial records to represent the spatial structure of Xiao Garden in different periods. It hopes to identify the inherent rules of landscaping activities that transformed Xiao Garden.

Abstract:Despite the growing interest in Chinese gardens, there is a lack of research on Changsha Gardens. Through document retrieval, review, and map analysis, we reconstructed the Changsha Gardens during the Ming Dynasty. Our findings reveal that gardening flourished in Changsha during this period. The royal gardens, dominated by literati aesthetics, set the trend for development, while the landscaping techniques were influenced by Jiangnan Gardens. Private gardens placed more emphasis on artistic mood and cultural implications. Landscape architects incorporated towers, terraces, and suburban mountain gardening to borrow scenery. The use of spring water to create landscapes and the rectangular shapes of the water bodies reflected Neo-Confucianism and practical functions. Planting design focused on meaning over form, with landscapes used to commemorate sages and promote the farming and reading culture and other Confucian values. However, it relied too much on borrowing natural scenery and the pragmatism of the Hunan culture, which might have affected the progress of landscaping techniques and the development of Changsha Gardens. Changsha Gardens were not as skilled as Jiangnan Gardens, and the style was not as prominent as other regional schools of gardens. This might be the reason why Changsha Gardens have not become one of the regional schools of gardens in China.

Abstract:From the beginning of Shang Dynasty to the end of Qing Dynasty the development of Chinese classical landscape gardens went through five periods: the formation period of Shang, Zhou, Qin and Han Dynasties, the transition period of Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, the heyday of Tang Dynasty, the maturity period of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the middle and end of Qing Dynasty. Five thousand years of glorious Chinese culture makes Chinese classical gardens different from Western gardens and Islamic gardens. The unique garden system and style give rise to the unique and profound Chinese classical garden system in world history. Based on the history of Chinese classical gardens, the paper focuses on the historical background of the development of the Song garden, the characteristics of typical gardens and literati gardens in the two Song dynasties, in order to understand the development process of the Song garden more deeply. Under the condition of learning and understanding, the method and concept characteristics of classical garden design in Song Dynasty are inherited and applied to modern garden planning and design.

Abstract:In a transition from classic gardens to contemporary gardens,Jiangnan modern garden appeared in new form and system.This paper made an investigation on typical Wuxi modern gardens from 1840 to 1949,analyzing different types such as private garden,urban park,ancestral hall garden,and temple garden.Through case studies,characteristics and design principles on the location,mountain and water,architecture,plant of Wuxi modern gardens were discussed.Meanwhile,their historical context,formation of temporal-spatial character,transformation on function and style were summarized.

Abstract:Being the general way of thinking as well as a creation principle of ancient Chinese, interpretation is exerted considerable influence on traditional Chinese culture. From this perspective, this essay, with exploring into ancient philosophical and aesthetic items related, and concerning about literary elements (e.g. inscribed couplets, garden literature, etc.) reviewed the significance of the tradition of hermeneutics within ancient gardens. That is, on one hand, as a major designing method, naming scenic spots and materializing imageries by using metaphors are recreation on the basis of interpreting ancient cultural archetypes. On the other hand, the combination of literary elements and gardens formed an open structure, which could keep accepting new meanings generated by the mechanism of understanding and interpreting, as well as bringing one's aesthetic experiences to a deeper and broader level.

Landscape Narratives of the Garden in Central Guangdong- The Case Study of the Keyuan Garden in the Qing Dynasty

Abstract:The Chinese courtyard space arranges and lays out the physical environment through gardening elements such as architectures, flowers, trees, rocks, water features, and pavings. It is not only a functional place for living and touring, but also a narrative space in which events and activities take place. This research took the Keyuan Garden, one of the four famous gardens in central Guangdong Province as a case study, to describe and analyse the narrative expression of courtyard space from an interdisciplinary perspective which include landscape design, literature and narratology. The Keyuan garden was divided in to three parts: the block narrative space which as paragraphs in garden narrative text, the linear narrative space which as sentences in garden narrative text, and the point narrative space which as vocabulary in garden narrative text. This research pointed out these three narrative spaces, as new language, were composed of different gardening elements, constructing the overall material space, and evoking the viewer's experience, cognition and interpretation of the courtyard space by interpreting the tangible gardening elements. The comprehensive and in-depth interpretation of the Keyuan garden from an multi- perspective will help to understand the art of gardening in central Guangdong in the Qing Dynasty, and provide a reference for inheriting the traditional and excellent construction wisdom today.

Abstract:The superior geographical conditions that the northwestern suburbs of Beijing and historical rulers who created the gardens in this areas, which became the natural foundation for the Qing Dynasty large-scale construction of royal garden. From the beginning of KangXi built ChangChunyan, YongZheng、QianLong and JiaQing successively built the YuanMingyuan、the Summer Palace、JingMingyuan and JingYiyuan. From Three Mountains and Five Gardens building styles and characteris-tics, It is the result of our country's landscape culture logical development. The three big gardens of YuanMingyuan、the Sum-mer Palace and Summer Resort each has its own characteristics. From the physical appearance and connotation of Three Mountains and Five Gardens , analysis the cultural heritage and cultural value that it condensation.

Abstract:The enormous diversity between the Chinese and Western cultures led to two different visual principles. Western visuality followed the perspective based on the retina, while the Chinese painters used the "far and near method" ( yuanjin fa 遠近法). Before the twentieth century, the representation and dissemination of Chinese gardens at the visual level were dominated by traditional landscape painting. However, the Chinese gardens' visual representation gradually shifted from traditional landscape painting to Western cartographic techniques (site survey and photography) after the Opium War (1840–1860). When studying the history of Chinese gardens, images provide a symbolic reference for interpreting the past of these gardens as crucial visual evidence. This article uses the visual evidence of classical Chinese gardens as a medium to reveal the influence and role of Western-centric theories on Chinese culture. Fundamentally, this paper attempts to analyse the impact of these changes on the inheritance of cultural memory from an intercultural and interdisciplinary perspective.

Abstract:Abstract Currently, urban parks are booming, but many public gardens are out of touch with modern city life. It is necessary to find out the functional positioning of public gardens and carry out the transformation to conform to the development of urban life, so that it can play a unique value in the urban space where all kinds of modern landscapes are emerging. This paper takes Anning Nanyuan and its adjacent Baihua Park as examples to compare and analyze the characteristics of the internal crowd activities of the two, explore the similarities and differences between public classical gardens and modern parks as urban landscape spatial identities, and provide references for the scientific development of public classical gardens in the future.

Abstract:Chinese garden art originates from Shang and Zhou Dynasties,drives to maturity in Song Dynasty nurtured by the renovation and development of Wei, Jin, Sui, Tang, Northern and Southern Dynasties. Affected by the situation of valuing literary talent above martial arts, Song Dynasty garden art made a great progress in the aspect of thinking, architecture, plants, rockery and layout of waters, the interests and artistic of paintings and poems became the most notable characteristic of gardens built in Song dynasty. Its space principle and aesthetics taste are totally different from the western gardens, which have a lot of features worthy to be learned and used in modern garden and urban designing of China.

Abstract:Landscape holds an important position in the entire history of Chinese painting. Since the Wei and Jin Dynasties, there have been many unique Shan shui. Although the characteristics of landscape styles vary in different periods and genres are diverse, the freehand brushwork spirit and artistic conception of traditional Chinese landscapes have always permeated through them. Chinese traditional landscape is a kind of art form with national characteristics and Zeitgeist connotation gradually formed through historical evolution in the process of social development and progress. This paper will start with the development process of mustard landscape and the inheritance of traditional culture, study the impact of mustard landscape on traditional culture, Zeitgeist, industry and self personality, and explore the innovative development path and significance of Chinese contemporary landscape. Relevant studies not only analyzed the reasons why landscape was widely spread in China, but also profoundly revealed the relationship between mustard garden landscape and Chinese traditional culture, and concluded that mustard garden Shan shui not only inherits Chinese culture, but also has a profound impact on Chinese culture and Chinese people's spirit, with solid theoretical research value and historical research value.

Abstract:Garden color plays a key role in creating a spatial atmosphere, artistic conception and regional landscape characteristics. The Chinese classical garden has a profound traditional Chinese culture at its core, and its color collocation is a microcosm of Chinese culture. An in‐depth exploration of the color matching of classical gardens is helpful for promoting the organic combination of modern urban construction needs and traditional culture. Therefore, this paper takes Tang‐style gardens in Xi'an as an example and selects five typical classical gardens to study the color characteristics of garden elements, uses natural color system (NCS) to record color data from classical garden elements, establishes a color map, and quantitatively evaluates the color harmony of classical garden elements on the basis of Moon Spencer (M‐S) color harmony theory. Research has revealed that the color system of Tang‐style gardens in Xi'an is unique and includes 244 NCS standard colors with a wide distribution of hues. The study distinguishes between humanistic environment colors and natural environment colors that vary greatly with season, and provides a wide color range that reflects the beauty of nature. The color range of the humanistic environment appears calm and solemn, with colors having low blackness and low chromaticness in general. There is a certain difference in color harmony between natural and cultural environment colors, but the overall color harmony is good. This paper not only enriches the color theory system of Tang‐style gardens but also provides a reference for promoting the scientific application of traditional urban colors in modern urban landscape construction.

Abstract:Because of the geographical condition and climate,the plant cultivation had a limitation in the private gardens in Beijing,but numerous examples presented wonderful plant landscapes with distinctive local characteristics.The proportion of the arbors including Chinese scholar tree,elm,jujube tree and willow was large and flowers bushes such as lilac,crabapple,and peony were valued highly.Some spices from South China were cultivated in green houses.Besides,liana,vegetable and bamboo were common in the gardens.Pairs of arbors or bushes were frequently planted in symmetry in the counties,and other plants were arranged according to buildings,rockeries and water.Based on a lot of documents and examples,the author analyzes the characters of the plant landscape design of the private gardens in Beijing.
