The symbol error rate and outage probability of the three schemes are obtained by transforming the correlated branch gains into a set of conditionally independent branch gains. Numerical and simulation results show excellent agreement with theoretical results.

The theory is illustrated using coherent M-ary phase-shift keying in Nakagami-m fading as an example. It is shown that previous published results are incorrect.

Abstract:The average symbol-error rate and outage probability of threshold-based hybrid selection/maximal-ratio combining (T-HS/MRC) in generalized fading environments are analyzed. A T-HS/MRC combiner chooses the combined branches according to a predetermined normalized threshold and the strength of the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of each branch. Therefore, the number of combined branches is a random variable, rather than a fixed number, as in conventional hybrid selection/maximal-ratio combining (H-S/MRC). Using the moment generating function method, a unified analysis of T-HS/MRC over various slow and frequency-nonselective fading channels is presented. Abstract:The symbol-error rate (SER) of a quadrature subbranch hybrid selection/maximal-ratio combining (QBHS/MRC) scheme for 1-D modulations in Rayleigh fading is examined. At the receiver, N diversity branches are split into 2N in-phase and quadrature subbranches. Traditional hybrid selection/maximal-ratio combining (H-S/MRC) is then applied over the 2N subbranches. Abstract:In this letter, under the assumption of multiple antennas are available at the relay nodes, we provide a detailed analysis about the performance of opportunistic multi-antenna relay selection (OMRS) scheme in Decode-and-Forward (DF) relay networks over independent, non-identical, Nakagami-m fading channels. By applying the moment-generating function (MGF) of the total signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the destination, the closed-form expressions of outage probability and error performance for binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation of OMRS scheme are derived. Simulations results show fine consistency with theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this study, the authors analyse the ergodic capacity of the downlink channel in a hybrid satellite-terrestrial cooperative system. The satellite link experiences shadowed Rician fading and the terrestrial link follows Rayleigh fading. Using the moment generating function-based approach, they derived the formulae for the ergodic capacity with the amplify-and-forward protocol or the decode-and-forward protocol. Moreover, the asymptotic expression for the ergodic capacity at a high signal-to-noise ratio is derived, and the system multiplexing gain is also obtained. Using the asymptotic results, they propose a simple relay selection strategy, which only requires the knowledge of channel statistics. Monte Carlo simulations are provided to confirm the analytical results, and to illustrate the effect of different factors, in terms of the number of relays, channel conditions, and the cooperative protocol, on the ergodic capacity. Numerical results show that the analytical results are highly accurate in the single relay scenario and have low computational complexity in the multi-relay scenario. In addition, the proposed relay selection strategy achieves low overhead in the price of a little performance degradation.

Two special cases, when the correlation matrix is equi-correlated and when the correlation matrix has different eigenvalues, are considered for both the equal-power cochannel interference case and the unequal-power cochannel interference case. Abstract:The performances of selection cooperation are investigated over asymmetric fading channels where the source-relay and the relay-destination channels experience Nakagami-m and Rayleigh fading, respectively. Decode-and-forward (DF) protocol is adopted and the Nth best relay is selected from M available relays. Probability density function (PDF) for the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the destination is derived first. Then, it is used to derive the exact expressions for outage probability and average symbol error rate (SER). The results hold for arbitrary M or N. Finally, simulations are carried out to verify the correctness of our theoretical analysis and results show that M and N almost have the same effect on the performance of outage probability and SER. © by HIGH TECHNOLOGY LETTERS PRESS.

Abstract:The paper presents the average bit error rate (BER) of a maximal ratio combining (MRC) two-dimensional (2D)-RAKE receiver in correlated frequency selective Nakagami fading environments in the presence of multiple co-channel interferences. A closed-form expression of the simple approximated probability density function for the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) is derived for the receiver with multiple correlated antennas and multiple RAKE branches in arbitrary fading environments. The effects of spatial and temporal diversity order, angular spread, antenna spacing, average multi-path strength and fading severity on the performance of the MRC 2D-RAKE receivers are all illustrated.

Abstract:An opportunistic DF-AF selection relaying scheme with maximal received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the destination is investigated in this paper. The outage probability of the opportunistic DF-AF selection relaying scheme over Nakagami-m fading channels is analyzed, and a closed-form solution is obtained. We perform asymptotic analysis of the outage probability in high SNR domain. The coding gain and the diversity order are obtained. For the purpose of comparison, the asymptotic analysis of opportunistic AF scheme in Nakagami-m fading channels is also performed by using the Squeeze Theorem. In addition, we prove that compared with the opportunistic DF scheme and opportunistic AF scheme, the opportunistic DF-AF selection relaying scheme has better outage performance. © 2012 IEEE.

Abstract:We study the symbol error rate (SER) of maximum ratio transmission, transmit antenna selection, and codebook-based beamforming in correlated Rayleigh fading channels. Assuming maximum ratio combining is performed at the receiver, we derive a universal upper bound on the average SER of the three schemes, and prove that the bound is asymptotically tight in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions. However, numerical results show that at medium SNR, the tightness of the bound depends on the condition number of the channel correlation matrix.
