Abstract:The manipulation theory focuses translation studies on the outside of the text, pointing out that ideology mainly comes from the behavior patterns, conventions and beliefs of a certain mainstream class or a certain stage of society as a whole, which will unconsciously manipulate the translator’s way of dealing with the linguistic and cultural characteristics of the literary source text. Based on this concept, this paper aims to expand the theoretical study of children’s literature translation by making a comparative study of Kang Xin’s and Ren Rong’s translations of Charlotte’s Web, and finds that different social ideologies manipulate the translator’s personal translation purpose, which in turn prompts them to choose different translation methods and strategies in terms of language style and culture loaded words, resulting in two different versions with different styles.

Abstract:As a social and cultural activity, translation to some extent is the “barometer” of social, ideological trends, and translation activities are greatly influenced and restricted by social movements. In the last years of the Qing Dynasty, the four movements happened subsequently, i.e., “the movement of using the barbarians’ skills to deal with barbarians”, “the movement of enforcing the army and enriching the country”, “the movement of carrying out constitutional reforms” and “the movement of enlightening people”. Translation as an essential cultural representation in the late Qing Dynasty reflected the theme of saving the country in translation organizations, translation subjects, and selections of original texts.

Abstract:After the failure of the Reformation Movement,Liang turned to literature and made great efforts in translating western novels which was for him a way of debunking the dark society and bankrupt government,and a way of introducing western civilization to Chinese people.His translation practice can be summarized as choosing political novels as the main subject,retranslating the western works and introducing new terminologies through Japanese,conducting manipulation and rewriting,and using newspapers as forums for translation.His translation theory rooted in Buddhist studies,and is still illuminative for translation studies today.LIANG Qi-chao's translation practice around the turn of the 20th century was ideological,reflecting partially on modern Chinese pioneers' commitments for democracy and freedom in their hard-won procession of learning from the West.

Abstract:Abstract Although there are many meanings associated with "ideology", both Marxist and Humanistic associations of the term are ignored since they regard it as a term of abuse. Instead, the meaning associated with critical linguistics is adopted as it refers to the propositions or assumptions we hold about ourselves, the world, or others in a way similar to a lens which colours, clarifies, or wraps the world. The paper attempts to explain how ideology exerts pressures and constraints on literary translation. The text undergoes a series of transformations or distortions depending on the stance or ideology of the author. Many examples from literature are cited to highlight the dilemma that faces the translator when his/her ideology contradicts the author's, or when the translator unconsciously adopts a technique that is different from the author's. Such differences can be construed as deviation, changes, or adoption of an ideology which is at variance with what the author intends. Several texts are discussed to show how, when and where ideologies are compromised in literary translation. Résumé Bien qu'il existe de nombreux sens associés au terme "idéologie", les acceptions marxistes et humanistes ont été rejetées étant donné que ce terme y est considéré comme injurieux. Par contre, l'acception adoptée par la linguistique critique est retenue puisqu'elle réfère aux suppositions ou idées que nous nous faisons de nous-mêmes, des autres et du monde qui nous entoure, à l'instar d'une lentille qui colore, éclaircit ou assombrit l'image perçue. L'auteur de cet article tente d'expliquer de quelle façon l'idéologie exerce des pressions et impose des contraintes dans la traduction littéraire. Le texte traduit subit une série de transformations, voire de distortions, en fonction des convictions ou de l'idéologie du traducteur. De nombreux exemples tirés de la littérature illustrent le dilemme auquel le traducteur fait face lorsque son idéologie s'oppose à celle de l'auteur du texte, ou lorsqu'il adopte inconsciemment une technique différente de celle utilisé dans le texte original. De telles différences s'expliquent par des déviations, des changements ou l'adoption d'une idéologie en contradiction avec celle visée par l'auteur. Différents textes sont commentés dans l'article afin de démontrer comment, quand et où les idéologies sont bafouées dans la traduction littéraire.

Abstract:Abnormal translation methods refer to those that don't comply with translation as normally supposed to be.But they may prevail and subdue alternatively in the development of human history.In the late Qing dynasty these methods were widely and unsparingly used in the translated novels,which are often condemned as being unjustified by those who study them from the perspective of text transfer.The paper,by taking the 'cultural turn',attempts to explore the cultural elements causing these to happen,maintaining that the target cultural context and poetics are the two most likely factors contributing to the popularity of abnormal translation methods.Though not in their own right,they are appropriate to the situation,and are indispensable to the evolution of Chinese culture and literature.

Abstract:Cultural Studies helps us to see that translation is not merely a simple and isolated process but is intricately bound to ideology, patronage, and poetics. Through the study of translated texts, we can explore power relations, and this has the potential to reflect such power structures within a wider cultural context. This paper examines 走向未来丛书 ( Zouxiang weilai congshu ), literally "Toward the Future Book Series," and focuses on its selection and introduction of western texts and its interaction with Chinese ideological trends, to explore the relationship between translation and politics in the 1980s, focusing on discussing the translation and introduction of Max Weber. Current studies of Max Weber largely focus on Weber's thought, while the few that touched upon translation in China were merely brief descriptions lacking deep analysis. Moreover, there have not been any papers which place Weber in historical and cultural context to explore the interaction between translation and politics. This paper employs a different approach where the focus is placed on the series' translation of Weber and the social ideology behind the translation. Not only does it unearth the influence of publishers' and patron's identities on the act of translation, but it also reflects on the role of the editorial board's unique mode of operation in the translation process. The case study of this paper not only focuses on diachronic translation activities, but is also concerned with the cultural space in which translation events occurs, translators' cultural objectives of translating, as well as foreign authors who enter the cultural context where the target language is used. By placing translated literature against a specific cultural time and space, this paper explains the cultural objectives and forms of literary translation, as well as translations that were specially made to achieve certain cultural objectives and the cultural effect of such translations.

Abstract:The lingo-stylistic determination of Fu Lei' s translation can be accounted for by referring to the aesthetic ideals he upheld, the importance he attached to fluency and readability of translations, and his concern for the target readers' acceptability. And this determination in turn accounts for his espousal of "bearing a spiritual resemblance to the original" as a guiding principle for translation and for the marked domesticating tendency that informs his translational works. Inspired by this principle, he believed that ideally, a translation should read like "the original author writing in the target language." To produce such effects, he would not hesitate to transform the source language' s lexical and syntactic features.

Abstract:As the subject of translation activities, translators have been neglected for a long time. The translator’s subjectivity and creativity have a profound influence on the interpretation of the core content of his works. Taking the multiple translation understandings of the word ideology in Ideology as an example, based on a detailed explanation of the concept of translator’s subjectivity, this paper discusses the factors that restrict the exertion of translator’s subjectivity and how to give full play to the translator’s subjectivity more appropriately, which is conducive to improve the conformity between English translation and Marx’s original philosophical works, and at the same time making excellent philosophical works of truth spread to the world.

Abstract:Existing studies in the literature to date on the English translation of Lun Yu are mostly on the linguistic level.Few scholars have probed into the relationship between the English translation of Lun Yu and the transmission and succession of the Chinese culture.Taking Waley's version of The Analects as a sample and based on the theory of the manipulation of ideology,this study makes further explorations in the misinterpretation and mistranslation in the English translation of Chinese classics.The research findings are as follows:1.The misinterpretation and mistranslation in the English translation of Chinese classics are closely connected to ideology;2.When interpreting and translating meanings in a foreign culture,translators should treat them with caution;3.Scholars working on Confucianism and translation studies should work together in the transmission and succession of the excellent traditional Chinese culture so as to make Confucianism known to the world.

Abstract:This study explored the influence of context in translation by comparing the choice of words in the novel Luotuo Xiangzi translated respectively by Shi Xiaojing and Howard Goldblatt while they were translating “nao”. The results indicated that choice of words in translation could be influenced from three perspectives: linguistic context, situational context and cultural context. Thus it is essential for translators to properly understand the linguistic context and situational context , as well as to know the cultural background and explain it to the readers while it’s necessary.

Abstract:Current translation theories and translation critiques generally focus on a contrastive analysis between the original text and the rendered one.Little attention is paid to another dimension of the translating process,i.e.the impact of translation on the target language.In the history of translation,however,there have always been great translators who set up the transformation of the target lan-guage as the main objective of their work.This objective has been either neglected or misinterpreted,as in the case of Lu Xun.But if we examine the development of modern Chinese language,we will see that both the modern political discourse and the literary language in China have been deeply influenced by translated texts.

Abstract:Feminist translation scholars have addressed a number of translation and gender issues since the 1980s; nevertheless, their strong political agenda has come under heavy criticism. Consequently, recent decades have seen a growing number of scholars involved in the study of translation and gender beginning to look beyond this early feminist perspective to approach gender-related issues. The present study follows this line of thought to examine how stereotypes against women are articulated in a well-known misogynist text, Shuihu Zhuan , a novel rooted in the social values of traditional Confucian Chinese culture, and more importantly, how translators bridge the language and cultural divide when trying to deal with such stereotypes. Through a descriptive comparison of the original misogynist text and one of its modern English translations from between the 1960s and 1970s, the study reveals how the translator has a wide range of options at their disposal to negotiate and temper the extreme patriarchal gender stereotypes of feudal China for a foreign readership less inclined to accept ethnic, racial or sexual discrimination. This analysis may inspire further studies in regard to the impact of gender issues on translation and how best to bridge differences in gender ethics across languages and cultures.

Abstract:This study attempts to discover ideological differences between Hoseini's novelA Thousand Splendid Suns and its two Persian translations, by Ganji and Soleimani and Ghebrai. According to Fairclough, ideology in discourse is encoded in the lexical, grammatical and textual items and changes in these items indicate different ideology. Hence, lexical choices of the source book and the two translations were analyzed based on Fairclough's approach to investigate ideological differences between them. The results of chi-square revealed that there were no ideological difference between the source text and its two translations. Moreover, the translators selected similar vocabularies for representing the ideology of the original author.

Abstract:With the cultural turn in translation studies in 1970s, the focus of translation studies was gradually changed from traditional linguistics to culture. André Lefevere put forward to Manipulation Theory that has further broadened the field of translation studies. It holds that translation is not to realize the meaning equivalence between source text and target text, but to realize the compromise between the source cultural system and the target cultural system, in which the translation will be manipulated by some factors. Because Children’s Literature is classified specially, it may be influenced by different cultural system. Therefore, this paper chooses Chinese translation of Charlotte’s Web as a case study from the perspective of Manipulation Theory, which draws a conclusion that ideology, poetics and patronage have impacts on translation strategies of children’s literature, in order to facilitate new theoretical researches and improve Chinese translations of Children’s Literature.

Abstract:In the past two decades, the field of translation studies has increasingly focused on the role of ideology in literary translation and cross-cultural transfer. This paper presents findings from the close textual comparison of original works of Hebrew literature and their English translations published in the United States during the 1970s and 1980s. I specify translation strategies that have had ideological effects on the source texts, and demonstrate how historically or ethically charged subject matter was manipulated so as to subdue “problematic” aspects of the text for the (largely Jewish) target audience. The two major categories of manipulations had to do with the moral dimension of the portrayal of Israel and Israeli society, particularly in subject matter related to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict; and with the relationship between Israel and other nations, and between Israel and Diaspora Jews. As stressed by recent sociological studies of translation, the translations can be seen both as reflective of contemporary socio-political trends of thought, and as practices playing an unseen role in strengthening these trends.

Abstract:While defining novels, history novels and other literature, the theories of the novels in the late Qing Dynasty make a multi-sided and multi-angled revelation of the novels’ontological characteristics. Among these theories, the most theoretically representative are “production of beauty”, “fiction”, “picturesque languages”and “modernity”. The ontological understanding of novel in criticism of the novels theories in the late Qing Dynasty has been broken through from the tradition, and reached a new theoretical state in the blending of western philosophy, aesthetics and literary though.

Abstract:Each translator’s ideology will be formed differently due to his different time background and social environment, which will have an influence on their translation process. When translating the same work, the translator’s understanding of the original text will be different. Based on Andre Lefevere’s manipulation theory and taking Shakespeare’s Hamlet translations in China as an example, this paper makes a comparative study of the translation styles of Zhu Shenghao and Sun Dayu. The translation styles of the two famous translators are different. The former is more prosaic, while the latter is more poetic. Starting from the translator’s life experience and social background of translation creation, the paper discusses the different influence of ideology, poetics and patronage on the two translator’s translation process through the analysis of specific examples.
