Preliminary Clinical Result of the Wallis Dynamic Stabilization System in Treatment of Lumbar Disc Herniation

Abstract:[Objective]To summarize the short-term experience of the implantation of Wallis posterior dynamic stabilization system for the treatment of lumbar disc herniation. [Methods]From January 2008 to March 2009,17 patients with lumbar disc herniation were treated with the Wallis system.There were 10 males and 7 females,with a mean age of 41 years(range,32 to 48 years).The Wallis system was implanted after excision of herniated disk with spinal microscopy.The ODI and visual analogue scale(VAS)were used before and after operation,The effects was evaluated accordomg to Chinese Orthopaedic Association criteria.[Results]All patients were followed up for an average of 18 months(range,9 to 24 months) after operation.Sixteen patients had excellent outcome,and one patient had good outcome.The mean preoperative ODI of 45.4±9.4 dropped to 11.9±4.3 postoperatively.The mean preoperative VAS for back pain of 6.3±2.5 dropped to 1.5±0.4 postoperatively.No leakage of cerebrospinal fluid,infection or spinous process fracture,nerve injury,recurrence of intervertebral disk hernia or displace of the Wallis system were found.[Conclusion]The preliminary clinical results showed that the Wallis system is a new safe and effective technique for treatment of lumbar disc herniation.However,long-time outcome remains to be studied.
