Abstract:We construct the complete and explicit non-linear Kaluza–Klein ansatz for deriving the bosonic sector of N=4 SU(2)×U(1) gauged five-dimensional supergravity from the reduction of type IIB supergravity on S5. This provides the first complete example of such an S5 reduction that includes non-abelian gauge fields, and it allows any bosonic solution of the five-dimensional N=4 gauged theory to be embedded in D=10.

Abstract:Type IIB supergravity can be consistently truncated to the metric and the self-dual 5-form. We obtain the complete non-linear Kaluza–Klein S5 reduction ansatz for this theory, giving rise to gravity coupled to the fifteen Yang–Mills gauge fields of SO(6) and the twenty scalars of the coset SL(6,R)/SO(6) . This provides a consistent embedding of this subsector of N=8 , D=5 gauged supergravity in type IIB in D=10 . We demonstrate that the self-duality of the 5-form plays a crucial role in the consistency of the reduction. We also discuss certain necessary conditions for a theory of gravity and an antisymmetric tensor in an arbitrary dimension D to admit a consistent sphere reduction, keeping all the massless fields. We find that it is only possible for D=11 , with a 4-form field, and D=10 , with a 5-form. Furthermore, in D=11 the full bosonic structure of eleven-dimensional supergravity is required, while in D=10 the 5-form must be self-dual. It is remarkable that just from the consistency requirement alone one would discover D=11 and type IIB supergravities, and that D=11 is an upper bound on the dimension.

Abstract:We construct the complete and explicit non-linear Kaluza-Klein Ansatz for deriving the bosonic sector of the standard N=4 SO(4) gauged four-dimensional supergravity from the reduction of D=11 supergravity on S^7. This provides a way of interpreting all bosonic solutions of the four-dimensional gauged theory as exact solutions in eleven-dimensional supergravity. We discuss certain limiting forms of the Kaluza-Klein reduction, and compare them with related forms in the Freedman-Schwarz N=4 SU(2)xSU(2) gauged theory. This leads us to the result that the Freedman-Schwarz model is in fact a singular limiting case of the standard SO(4) gauged supergravity. We show that in this limit, our Ansatz for getting the SO(4) gauged theory as an S^7 reduction from D=11 indeed reduces to an S^3 x S^3 reduction from D=10, which makes contact with previous results in the literature. We also show that there is no distinction to be made between having equal or unequal values for the gauge coupling constants $g$ and $\tilde g$ of the two SU(2) gauge-group factors in the standard N=4 SO(4) gauged supergravity, whilst by contrast the ratio of $g$ to $\tilde g$ is a non-trivial parameter of the Freedman-Schwarz model.
SU(2) Reduction of Six-Dimensional (1,0) Supergravity

Abstract:We obtain a gauged supergravity theory in three dimensions with eight real supersymmetries by means of a Scherk-Schwarz reduction of pure N = (1, 0) supergravity in six dimensions on the SU(2) group manifold. The SU(2) Yang-Mills fields in the model propagate, since they have an ordinary kinetic term in addition to Chern-Simons couplings. The other propagating degrees of freedom consist of a dilaton, five scalars which parameterise the coset SL(3, R)/SO(3), three vector fields in the adjoint of SU(2), and twelve spin-(1)/(2) fermions. The model admits an AdS(3) vacuum solution. We also show how a charged black hole solution can be obtained, by performing a dimensional reduction of the rotating self-dual string of six-dimensional (1, 0) supergravity. Gauged Supergravities from Spherical Reductions

Abstract:This dissertation is devoted to deriving the bosonic sectors of certain gauged supergravities in various dimensions from reducing eleven-dimensional supergravity, type IIA and type IIB supergravities in ten dimensions on certain spherical spaces. Explicit non-linear Kaluza-Klein ansätze for reductions of eleven-dimensional supergravity and of type IIA and type IIB supergravities on $S^n$ and $S^n\times T^m$ are presented. Knowing explicit non-linear ansätze is proven to be very useful in finding super Yang-Mills operators of gauge theories via AdS/CFT correspondence. We present a sample calculation which allows us to find a super Yang-Mills operator using a non-linear ansatz. Knowing non-linear ansätze is also useful for finding supergravity duals to certain twisted supersymmetric gauge theories. These supergravity solutions are branes wrapped on certain supersymmetric cycles. Some solutions, which are dual to gauge theories in three and five dimensions, are presented.

Abstract:We obtain new consistent Kaluza-Klein embeddings of the gauged supergravities with half of maximal supersymmetry in dimensions D=7, 6, 5 and 4. They take the form of warped embeddings in type IIA, type IIB, M-theory and type IIB respectively, and are obtained by performing Kaluza-Klein circle reductions or T-duality transformations on Hopf fibres in S^3 submanifolds of the previously-known sphere reductions. The new internal spaces are in some sense ``mirror manifolds'' that are dual to the original internal spheres. The vacuum AdS solutions of the gauged supergravities then give rise to warped products with these internal spaces. As well as these embeddings, which have singularities, we also construct new non-singular warped Kaluza-Klein embeddings for the D=5 and D=4 gauged supergravities. The geometry of the internal spaces in these cases leads us to study Fubini-Study metrics on complex projective spaces in some detail.

Abstract:We construct a consistent reduction of type IIA supergravity on S^3, leading to a maximal gauged supergravity in seven dimensions with the full set of massless SO(4) Yang-Mills fields. We do this by starting with the known S^4 reduction of eleven-dimensional supergravity, and showing that it is possible to take a singular limit of the resulting standard SO(5)-gauged maximal supergravity in seven dimensions, whose eleven-dimensional interpretation involves taking a limit where the internal 4-sphere degenerates to RxS^3. This allows us to reinterpret the limiting SO(4)-gauged theory in seven dimensions as the S^3 reduction of type IIA supergravity. We also obtain the consistent S^4 reduction of type IIA supergravity, which gives an SO(5)-gauged maximal supergravity in D=6.

Gauged D=4 N=4 Supergravity

Abstract:We present the full Lagrangian and supersymmetry transformation rules for the gauged D=4, N=4 (half-maximal) supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of vector multiplets. Using the embedding tensor formulation, the final results are universal and valid in arbitrary symplectic frames. We also analyze the conditions for the critical points of the scalar potential and specify the full spectrum of the quadratic fluctuations about Minkowski vacua. This allows us also to exclude the appearance of quadratic divergences in the 1-loop corrections to the scalar potential for any Minkowski vacuum fully breaking supersymmetry. We also provide some interesting byproducts of our analysis, like the field equations and the quadratic constraints for the fermion shifts characterizing the gauging (also known as T-tensor identities).

Abstract:We obtain the pseudo-supergravity extension of the D-dimensional Kaluza–Klein theory, which is the circle reduction of pure gravity in D+1 dimensions. The fermionic partners are pseudo-gravitino and pseudo-dilatino. The full Lagrangian is invariant under the pseudo-supersymmetric transformation, up to quadratic order in fermion fields. We find that the theory possesses a U(1) global symmetry that can be gauged so that all the fermions are charged under the Kaluza–Klein vector. The gauging process generates a scalar potential that has a maximum, leading to the AdS vacuum. Whist the highest dimension for gauged AdS supergravity is seven, our gauged AdS pseudo-supergravities can exist in arbitrary dimensions.
Supergravities with Minkowski × Sphere

Abstract:Recently the authors have introduced a new gauged supergravity theory with a positive definite potential in D = 6, obtained through a generalised Kaluza-Klein reduction from D = 7. Of particular interest is the fact that this theory admits certain Minkowski×Sphere vacua. In this paper we extend the previous results by constructing gauged supergravities with positive definitive potentials in diverse dimensions, together with their vacuum solutions. In addition, we prove the supersymmetry of the generalised reduction ansatz. We obtain a supersymmetric solution with no formfield fluxes in the new gauged theory in D = 9. This solution may be lifted to D = 10, where it acquires an interpretation as a time-dependent supersymmetric cosmological solution supported purely by the dilaton. Exploring new constraints on Kahler moduli space of 6d N = 1 Supergravity

Abstract:We propose new constraints for 6d (1, 0) supergravity theories based on consistency conditions on the Kahler moduli spaces of their 5d reductions. The requirement that both the metric and the BPS string tensions in the Kahler moduli space are positive imposes specific restrictions on the Chern-Simons coefficients in the 5d effective Lagrangians that are derived from the Kaluza-Klein reductions of 6d theories. Moreover, the emergence of local interacting 5d CFTs when the moduli space metric degenerates introduces additional constraints coming from the analysis of 5d SCFTs. Focusing on the moduli spaces of 6d supergravity theories without a tensor multiplet and their Higgsings, we show that these constraints require the presence of certain primary states in the 2d worldvolume CFTs on 1/2 BPS strings. We specifically analyze a class of SU(2) models and infinite families of U(1) models using these constraints, and demonstrate that the theories featuring a 1-form symmetry in their massless spectra, unless the 1-form symmetry is gauged, fail to satisfy the constraints and therefore belong to the Swampland.

On Supergravity and Noncritical Strings

Abstract:Motivated by the long-term goal of finding holographic descriptions for ${\mathcal N}=1$ and ${\mathcal N}=2$ super QCD, we revisit the subject of ''noncritical'' superstring theory. Focusing on string models with 6d super Poincaré invariance, we provide a careful worldsheet derivation of the leading-order effective theories for the lowest modes. We identify them as $\textit{seven}$-dimensional, $\textit{maximally supersymmetric}$ gauged supergravities: the $SO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIA and the $ISO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIB. The same theories also arise as consistent truncations on $S^3$ of the 10d IIB and IIA supergravities, respectively, where the chirality flip is as expected from T-duality. These effective supergravities should be interpreted in the following sense. The noncritical string can be viewed as a special case of a discrete series of backgrounds labelled by an integer $k$ (which counts the number of NS5 branes in a certain duality frame); the ''noncritical'' value is $k=2$, while for $k \to \infty$ one recovers a weakly-curved 10d target space. The effective supergravities described here give an accurate description of the interactions among the lowest modes for $k \to \infty$, with higher derivative corrections suppressed by powers of $1/k$. We discuss BPS solutions of the 7d gauged supergravities and their uplift to 10d solutions. In particular, we find a novel class of solutions with RR flux, parametrized by a function of three variables that solves an elegant PDE. While we cannot solve the PDE in closed form except in trivial cases, we confirm that our solutions correspond to a 10d IIA Hanany-Witten setup with continuous distributions of both ''color'' D4 branes and ''flavor'' D6 branes.

Abstract:N = (1, 0) supergravity in six dimensions admits AdS(3) x S-3 as a vacuum solution. We extend our recent results presented in Lu et al (2002 Preprint hep-th/0212323), by obtaining the complete N = 4 Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons supergravity in D = 3, up to quartic fermion terms, by S-3 group manifold reduction of the six-dimensional theory. The SU(2) gauge fields have Yang-Mills kinetic terms as well as topological Chern-Simons mass terms. There is in addition a triplet of matter vectors. After diagonalization, these fields describe two triplets of topologically-massive vector fields of opposite helicities. The model also contains six scalars, described by a GL(3, R)/SO(3) sigma model. It provides the first example of a three-dimensional gauged supergravity that can be obtained by a consistent reduction of string theory or M-theory and that admits AdS(3) as a vacuum solution. There are unusual features in the reduction from six-dimensional supergravity, owing to the self-duality condition on the 3-form field. The structure of the full equations of motion in N = (1, 0) supergravity in D = 6 is also elucidated, and the role of the self-dual field strength as torsion is exhibited.
Massive Three-Dimensional Supergravity from R+R^2 Action in Six Dimensions

Abstract:We obtain a three-parameter family of massive $ \mathcal{N} = 1 $ supergravities in three dimensions from the 3-sphere reduction of an off-shell $ \mathcal{N} = \left( {1,0} \right) $ six-dimensional Poincaré supergravity that includes a curvature squared invariant. The three-dimensional theory contains an off-shell supergravity multiplet and an on-shell scalar matter multiplet. We then generalise this in three dimensions to an eight-parameter family of supergravities. We also find a duality relationship between the six-dimensional theory and the $ \mathcal{N} = \left( {1,0} \right) $ six-dimensional theory obtained through a T 4 reduction of the heterotic string effective action that includes the higher-order terms associated with the supersymmetrisation of the anomaly-cancelling tr(R ∧ R) term.
Gauge-fixing local H symmetry in supergravities

Abstract:We discuss known maximal D-dimensional supergravities of two types: type I with G/H coset spaces and type II derived by compactification from higher dimensions without dualization, these have less manifest symmetries. In 4D and 6D in type I models we perform explicit gauge-fixing of local H symmetries in unitary gauges: symmetric, Iwasawa, and partial Iwasawa. In 4D supergravity I in symmetric gauge global H-invariance and nonlinearly realized G-symmetry are valid on shell, classically. The global H-symmetry and G-symmetry in Iwasawa-type gauges in type I and type II supergravities are not manifest, if at all present. This fact raises the issue of the gauge equivalence of the S-matrix of various gauge-fixed D-dimensional supergravities and its relation to the ones computable using superamplitude methods.

Abstract:We develop in detail the general framework of consistent Kaluza-Klein truncations from D=11 and type II supergravities to gauged maximal supergravities in two dimensions. In particular, we unveil the complete bosonic dynamics of all gauged maximal supergravities that admit a geometric uplift. Our construction relies on generalised Scherk-Schwarz reductions of E$_9$ exceptional field theory. The application to the reduction of D=11 supergravity on $S^8\times S^1$ to SO(9) gauged supergravity is presented in a companion paper.

Massive IIA flux compactifications with dynamical open strings

Abstract:We consider massive type IIA compactifications down to 4 dimensions in presence of O6 planes and D6 branes parallel to them, in order to preserve half-maximal supersymmetry in 4D. The dynamics of open strings living on the spacetime filling branes is taken into account, in the gauged supergravity description, by adding extra vector multiplets and embedding tensor components. The scalar potential gets new terms that can be matched with contributions coming from dimensional reduction of the non-Abelian DBI and WZ brane actions. In this setting, we analyze the vacuum structure of the theory and find novel AdS$_4$ vacua, both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric ones. Furthermore, we address their perturbative stability by computing their mass spectra. Some of the vacua are found to be perturbatively stable, despite their being non-supersymmetric. We conclude by discussing the reliability of our setup in terms of higher-derivative corrections.
