Abstract:Mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinases are widely expressed serine-threonine kinases that play important roles in various signal transduction pathways in mammalian cells. Three major families of MAP kinases exist: the extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases (ERKs), the Jun N-terminal kinases (JNK kinases), and the p38 MAP kinases. p38 signal pathway is an important branch of the MAPKs. p38 MAP kinase mediates a signal pathway that is involved in many physiological and pathological processes such as inflammation, cellular stress, apoptosis, cell cycle and growth. The four known p38 isoforms includep38α、p38β、p38γ和p38δ. Over the years, it has been established that the p38 MAP kinase pathway is activated in response to stress, including hyperosmolarity, heat shock, radiation, and other stress respoases. Thus, the p38 pathway participates in signaling cascades induced by diverse stimuli, suggesting that it plays important roles in the induction of various cellular responses. Furthermore, p38 exhibits regulatory effects in the induction of apoptosis and cell differentiation.
