Abstract:Studying optical properties of atmospheric aerosol is important because aerosol affects people around the world significantly. Aerosol can directly affect climate change by scattering and absorption of solar and other radiations, and also indirectly affect the radiation by affecting cloud formation. Tropospheric aerosol is associated with air pollution and adverse health effects. These effects strongly depend on the physical and optical properties of aerosol particles. As an active remote sensing measurement, Lidar is effective for monitoring and characterizing aerosol optical properties, it provides high resolution, real-time height profile of backscattered signal from aerosols. Lidar can provide vertical distribution of atmospheric aerosol optical properties, but the retrieval algorithm is complex and has pretty big uncertainty. The retrieval algorithm of sun and sky photometer is easy, but it is sensitive to cloud and can only provide optical properties of the atmospheric column as well as the water vapor amount, ozone. At present, the repeat cycle of active earth observing satellite (CAPLIPSO) is sixteen. In light of the above, we propose to use lidar, sun-photometer, and CALIPSO synchronously, then present combined retrieval to investigate the optical properties of aerosol.
