Abstract:A novel compound,Zn2(HL)(CH3COO)3·H2O (abbreviated as ZnL) was synthesized.Through discoloration and dehydrochlorination tests at 180℃,ZnL was found to possess thermal stabilizing effect of high efficiency for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC):With the mass ratio of ZnL to PVC resin ranging from 0.3/50 to 1.5/50,the totally-turning-black time of PVC samples increased from 60 min to 170 min,among which,a typical PVC sample (PVC resin=50.00 g,ZnL=1.50 g,tributyl citrate=4.0 ml) displayed a significant long-term thermal stability with ti (induction time) of 100 min,ts (stability time) of 110 min,and totally-turning-black time of 170 min;another typical PVC sample (PVC resin=50.00 g,ZnL=1.50 g,pentaerythritol=0.50 g,tributyl citrate=4.0 ml) displayed a significant long-term thermal stability with ti of 160 min,ts of 170 min,and totally-turning-black time of 190 min.
Preparation of a Novel Stabilizer and Its Thermal‐oxidative Stabilization Effect on Polyamide 6

Abstract:A novel stabilizer containing hindered phenol and hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) group in one molecule was prepared through the acyl chloride reaction followed by the amidation reaction. Its structure was characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI‐MS) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR). The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results under nitrogen and air atmosphere indicated that the addition of the novel stabilizer efficiently improved the thermal and thermal‐oxidative stability of polyamide 6 (PA6). The thermal‐oxidative stabilization effect of the novel stabilizer on PA6 was further evaluated in terms of reduced viscosity, tensile properties, and chemical structure after accelerated thermal aging in an air circulating oven at 150°C. The results indicated that the novel stabilizer could improve the thermal‐oxidative stability of PA6 effectively, resulting in the high retention of reduced viscosity and tensile strength, and the low ratio of terminal carboxyl group to amino group. Abstract:A new kind of highly efficient organic zinc thermal stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), zinc arginine stearate [Zn(Arg)(St)], is designed by introducing the arginine and stearate to the same zinc atoms to regulate the binding energy between anions and cation. Gaussian soft is used to calculate the binding energy. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectra, elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry show that Zn(Arg)(St) has been successfully synthesized. Zn(Arg)(St) stabilized PVC displays excellent Congo red, static and dynamic thermal stability time, especially the excellent initial whiteness and whiteness retention time. The thermal stability mechanism of Zn(Arg)(St) attributes to the different binding energy between the two anions and zinc cation, which results in Zn(Arg)(St) continuously replacing the unstable chlorine atoms step by step by Arg and St anions. Moreover, the amino group in Arg could complex ZnCl2 to inhibit the "zinc burning" effect, and the guanidine group could absorb HCl to inhibit the "autocatalytic effect" of HCl. In addition, Zn(Arg)(St) has a remarkable lubrication effect, which also enhances the thermal stability of PVC. Thus, Zn(Arg)(St) is an environmentally friendly thermal stabilizer for PVC with an excellent thermal stability effect. Importantly, this work also proposes a new method to design highly efficient thermal stabilizers for PVC.

Abstract:Thermal stabilization effect of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (TRIS) in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is studied. Discoloration tests and dehydrocholorination tests show that PVC films containing TRIS as the unique main stabilizer present excellent initial color and long-term stability, compared with all their control samples, PVC films containing pentaerythritol (PER), within the ingredient range of 50 g PVC, 0.2 g stearic acid (HSt), and x (x = 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5) g TRIS or PER. Nucleophilic substitution reaction between TRIS and unstable chlorine in PVC resin and neutralization reaction between TRIS and HCl generated subsequently during heating is respectively suggested as the mechanism of the initial and long-term stabilization.

Abstract:A group of high molecular weight graft stabilisers, both fluorinated and non-fluorinated, were synthesised by thermal ring-opening esterification of anhydride copolymers. These included poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic anhydride) and poly(maleic anhydride-octadecene) and were reacted with alcohols, including 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctanol, 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluoro-dodecanol and 1-octanol. The stabilisers were fully characterised by 1H, 19F and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. Their phase behaviour in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2), vinylidene fluoride (VDF), and a mixture of scCO2/VDF was also studied using a variable volume view cell. Each stabiliser was tested for the dispersion polymerisation of VDF in scCO2. The effect of the stabiliser architecture on the molecular weight and morphology of the poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymer product was investigated. Steric stabilisation effects were observed. Gel permeation chromatography and scanning electron microscopy were used for the characterisation of the molecular weight and morphology of PVDF polymers.

Abstract:An investigation was carried out on the performances of hydroxylbenzylthioethers employed as organic thermal stabilizers for rigid poly(vinyl chloride). The efficiency of these compounds as thermal stabilizers was evaluated by using Haake polydrive mixer and TGA. The stabilizing efficiency was compared with Ca–Zn soap and methyltin stabilizer. Hydroxylbenzylthioethers exhibit greater efficiency than both of these stabilizers. This is attributed to the ability of these compounds to prevent the formation of polyene sequences. The hydroxylbenzylthioethers-stabilized PVC showed a slightly lower glass transition temperature (Tg) in comparison with the original PVC. Hydroxylbenzylthioethers and epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) exhibit synergistic effect on the stabilizing effect, when the mass ratios of ESBO to hydroxylbenzylthioethers are less than 0.5.

Abstract:In this paper, two kinds of stabilizers are synthesized from raw materials extracted from plants, and a series of PVC samples are prepared by solvent method and stirring method. Through thermal stability, compatibility and mechanical properties testing, it is concluded that PVC film has outstanding thermal stability and mechanical properties after the addition of these two thermal stabilizers, and PVC has good compatibility. Zinc Tryptophan (Trp‐Zn) and zinc N‐(salicylic) tryptophan (SalTrp‐Zn) were synthesized from tryptophan, zinc acetate, and salicylic aldehyde by one‐pot method, respectively. The structure was analyzed by FT‐IR, 1H NMR, and elemental analysis. PVC samples were prepared by stirring method and solvent film process, and then the thermal properties of PVC samples were studied by thermal aging chamber test, Congo red test, electrical conductivity test, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The thermal stability of Trp‐Zn and SalTrp‐Zn stabilized PVC samples was better than calcium and zinc soaps used in industry. The thermal stability time was up to 80 min, and it was a long‐acting thermal stabilizer. After the addition of CaSt2 and Trp‐Zn stabilizer in different proportions, the thermal stability of PVC was obviously improved, and the initial whiteness of the film was improved after the combination of Trp‐Zn/SalTrp‐Zn. In addition, the tensile test verified that the PVC samples stabilized by Trp‐Zn and SalTrp‐Zn had the highest elongation at break. The addition of Trp‐Zn can reduce the elastic modulus of PVC, effectively improve the mechanical properties of PVC, and make the PVC film have better toughness and elasticity. Through DMA and EDS tests, it can be seen that Trp, SalTrp‐Zn had good compatibility with PVC and DOP. The quantum chemical calculation of Trp‐Zn, SalTrp‐Zn and vinyl chloride models was carried out, and the thermal stability mechanism of thermal stabilizer on PVC was analyzed accurately, mainly the absorption mechanism of HCl and the substitution mechanism of unstable chlorine atoms.

Abstract:Thermal stabilizer plays a crucial role in improving the thermal stability of PVC samples. However, the effect of thermal behavior of stabilizer itself on PVC sample has been rarely reported. In this work, metal organic framework Zn-Atz with spatial three-dimensional structure was prepared and applied for stabilizing PVC. It was found that Zn-Atz displays both initial and long-term thermal stabilization effect on PVC. However, its long-term thermal stabilization effect is unsatisfactory due to the hydrogen chloride and unstable chlorine atoms diffusion rate limitation in the pore structure of Zn-Atz. CaSt2 and triphenyl phosphite (TP) can quickly absorb hydrogen chloride and chlorine free radicals produced in the PVC thermal degradation. When utilized together with Zn-Atz, CaSt2 and TP can provide longer reaction time for the diffusion of hydrogen chloride and unstable chlorine atoms in the pore structure of Zn-Atz, so as to significantly improve the long-term thermal stability of PVC. Meanwhile, a possible synergistic stabilization mechanism of Zn-Atz, CaSt2 and TP was proposed.

Abstract:A Zn-containing complex ([ZnL2]center dot xH(2)O, x approximate to 4, abbreviated as ZnL2; HL = 1,3-dihydroxy-2-hydroxymethy1-2-(salicylidimino)propane) was synthesized and used as a thermal stabilizer. Through discoloration and dehydrochlorination tests at 180 degrees C, ZnL2 was proved to be a co-stabilizer of long-term thermal stability for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC): compared with the PVC samples stabilized using typical metallic soap stabilizers with the mass ratio of calcium stearate (CaSt(2)) to zinc stearate (ZnSt(2)) ranging from 1.5/0 to 0/1.5, whose induction time (t(i)), stability time (t(s)) respectively ranged from 9 to 54 min, from 12 to 56 min, the PVC samples stabilized using combinations with the mass ratio of CaSt(2) to ZnL2 from 1.5/0 to 0/1.5 showed apparent thermal stability with th ts ranging from 44 to 85 min, from 49 to 88 min. PVC sample (PVC resin = 50.0 g, ZnL2 = 1.5 g, pentaerythritol = 0.3 g, dioctyl phthalate = 2.5 g) displayed a significant long-term thermal stability with Li of 102 min, t(s) of 105 min, and totally-turning-black time of 170 min. Abstract:The success of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in the processing is critical to its thermal stability. This work presents a novel natural-based and solvent-free thermal stabilizer for PVC, namely calcium-humate (Ca-humate), obtained for the first time from naturally occurring humic acid, an organic-type natural product. Ca-humate and also zinc-humate (Zn-humate) were synthesized through single-step reaction in an aqueous solution. The structures and thermal properties of these derivatives were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The potential use of humic acid-based derivatives as PVC thermal stabilizers was explored in this work. The degradation behavior of PVC in the presence of Ca- and Zn-humates has been quantified by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results demonstrated that the thermal stability of PVC is positively enhanced in the presence of Ca-humate. Zn-humate can effectively stimulate the "zinc burning" of PVC. Humic acid containing both metal ions (Ca/Zn-humates) at various substitution ratios was also synthesized and did not show demonstrated self-synergistic effect. Hydrogen chloride scavenging ability has been proposed to explain the stabilization mechanism by Ca-humates indicating a straightforward way to develop a bio-based additive that can significantly improve the thermal stability of PVC with low cost and high efficiency.

Preparation and Properties of in Situ Polymerization of Poly (vinyl Chloride)

Abstract:The in situ suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride was carried out in a system containing chlorinated polyethylene (CPE, the impact modifier), CaCO 3 (the filler), lubricants and thermal stabilizers to generate ready-to-processing PVC resins (RTUPVC). The effects of the various additives on the polymerization and the properties of the resins were investigated. The polymerization time until certain pressure drop was reduced with the addition of CPE and CaCO 3, however, the lubricant and thermal stabilizer retarded the polymerization. CPE improved the plasticity and both impact and tensile strengths. RTUPVC resin exhibited higher impact and tensile strengths than PVC/CPE blends with the same CPE content. The particle size of the resin was increased with increasing content of CPE, but not affected by other additives.
Preparation of rare-earth terephthalic acid stabilizer and its effect on thermal stability of polyvinyl chloride

Abstract:Lanthanum terephthalate (LTP) was synthesized using lanthanum nitrate, p -phthalic acid, and sodium hydroxide as raw materials. The products were characterized by elemental analysis and FTIR. LTP was compounded with other stabilizers for a better effect. The effects of LTP on the thermal stability and discoloration of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) were studied by the Congo red experiment and thermal aging test. The dynamic thermal stability was studied through electrical conductivity and torque rheological tests, and the mechanical properties of the material were tested through the tensile test. Using LTP as the heat stabilizer for PVC, the anti-discoloration performance was poor, but the long-term stability was satisfactory (up to 24 min). LTP was used as the main stabilizer and mixed with calcium stearate, zinc stearate (ZnSt 2 ), and pentaerythritol (PER) to obtain the best compound rare-earth thermal stabilizer. When the compounding scheme was LTP:ZnSt 2 :PER = 3:1:1, the stabilizer exhibited excellent antidiscoloration and long-term static stability (up to 39 min), which ensured excellent dynamic thermal stability, processing, and mechanical properties. The thermal stability mechanism results confirmed that LTP could absorb HCl gas freed by the decay of PVC to generate LaCl 3 , which lessened the catalysis of the HCl gas, thereby inhibiting PVC degradation.

Abstract:A novel vinylpyridine-based phthalonitrile monomer, 2,6-bis[3-(3,4-dicyanophenoxy)styryl]pyridine (BDSP), was resoundingly produced by a nucleophilic substitution reaction of 2,6-bis(3-hydroxystyryl)pyridine with 4-nitrophthalonitrile in the presence of potassium carbonate. The chemical structure of the synthesized BDSP was confirmed by proton ( 1 H) and carbon ( 12 C) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as well as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. The curing behavior of BDSP was investigated by FTIR and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. The resin showed a low complex viscosity in the wide processing window between the monomer melting temperature and the curing temperature of the polymer, as discovered by rheological analysis. In addition, the properties of the polymer were studied by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Based on the test results, the BDSP polymer demonstrated superior processing performance, excellent thermal stability, outstanding mechanical properties, and low water uptake, and these advanced performance characteristics are critical to many fields.

Abstract:New metal complexes of Schiff base (PB) prepared from condensation reaction of 2-aminopyridine and 6-formyl-5,7-dihydroxy-2-methylbenzopyran-4-one with metal ions; Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) are prepared. Different analysis tools like elemental analyses, FTIR, thermal analysis, conductivity, electronic spectra, and magnetic susceptibility measurements are all used to elucidate the structures of the newly prepared metal complexes. The free Schiff base (PB) has been examined as thermal stabilizer and co-stabilizer for rigid PVC in air, at 180 °C. Its high stabilizing efficiency is detected by its high induction period value (Ts) when compared with some of the common reference stabilizers used industrially, such as dibasic lead carbonate and calcium–zinc stearate (Ca–Zn soap). Blending Schiff base or its metal complexes with Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), and Cu(II) ions with the reference stabilizers in different ratios had a synergistic effect on the induction period (thermal stability). The stabilizing efficiency is attributed at least partially to the ability of the stabilizer to be incorporated in the polymeric chains, thus disrupting the chain degradation process.

Abstract:A type of lanthanide (La(III))-containing ionomer based on acrylate processing aid (ACR) for poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) was synthesized, and influence of the ionomer on thermal stabilization of PVC was investigated with visual color comparison and Congo red methods. Results revealed that the ionomer with a suitable La(III) content behaved as a good costabilizer to PVC. It was able to extend static stabilization time of PVC and postpone zinc burning. The stabilizing efficiency of the ionomer to PVC depended on ion content, which was discussed in terms of EisenbergHirdMoore model. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared test verified that this ionomer can react with zinc stearate (ZnSt2) to form some new structures, which is responsible for postponing zinc burning. The ionomer and epoxidized soybean oil exhibited a synergistic effect on the stabilizing efficiency of calcium stearate (CaSt2)/ZnSt2 stabilizer to PVC compounds. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis Of Poly (Allyl Glycidyl Ether) Bearing Alkyl Functional Side Groups And Its Plasticizing And Antistatic Effects For Pvc

Abstract:A novel alkyl functionalized polyether was synthesized by combination of anionic ring-opening polymerization (AROP) and thiol-ene click reaction. Afterwards, its plasticizing and antistatic effects for PVC were investigated. Firstly, poly (allyl glycidyl ether) (PAGE) intermediate product was obtained via AROP by using allyl glycidyl ether as a monomer and t-BuOK as an initiator. Then, PAGE was used as a precursor and flexible alkyl groups were introduced by employing thiol-ene click reaction, and PAGE(butane) target product was obtained finally. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) measurements verified that the structure of resultant polymer was consistent with the design, and the molecular weight of PAGE can be flexibly tailored by varying the feed ratio of monomer to initiator. The studies on the thermal properties suggest that with the incorporation of alkyl groups, the glass transition temperature (T-g) decreased accordingly, and the T-g for PAGE(butane) was -74.97 degrees C. PAGE., exhibit good thermal stability. PAGE(butane) could improve the toughness of PVC obviously without sacrificing its strength. Meanwhile, it could effectively reduce the surface resistivity of PVC and act as an antistatic agent. As compared to bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DOP), PAGE(butane) exhibited enhanced resistance to extraction and volatility.

With the development of green chemistry, PVC thermal stabilizers should be developed in the direction of non‐toxic, environmental protection, and high efficiency. This study utilized natural Cinnamic acid to successfully synthesize an eco‐friendly and high‐performance cinnamate‐intercalated calcium aluminum hydrotalcite through the coprecipitation method. The structure of CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs was analyzed via XRD, IR, SEM, and thermogravimetric analyses. The CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs/PVC sample was thoroughly investigated using multiple techniques, including tests, such as oven aging, thermogravimetric analysis, Congo red analysis, and conductivity analysis. Compared with the commercial thermal stabilizers CaSt2/ZnSt2 and CaAl‐CO3‐LDHs, CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs demonstrated superior initial whiteness and exceptional long‐term thermal stability, it did not completely blacken until 120 min. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the addition of CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs could improve the plasticizing performance of PVC. CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs also had a synergistic effect with ZnSt2, with a static thermal stabilization time of up to 40.5 min. Through HCl absorption experiments to investigate the thermal stabilization mechanism, the results showed that CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs can effectively absorb HCl released during PVC degradation. Highlights By utilizing natural organic Cinnamic acid, Calcium nitrate, and Aluminum nitrate as raw materials, all from a wide range of sources, the reaction process eliminated the need for toxic solvents and a large number of chemicals. The preparation process of CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs was simple and the reaction time was short. Comprehensive tests showcased the exceptional long‐term thermal stability of the CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs/PVC sample. The addition of CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs can improve the plasticizing property of PVC. The mechanism of CaAl‐cinnamate‐LDHs was capable of absorbing HCl released during PVC degradation.

Abstract:In this work, a new liquid thermal stabilizer (LTS) was prepared using rosin and fatty acids as feedstock and evaluated for its stabilizing effects on poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). First, a rosin/oil-based dimer acid (RODA) was prepared by the addition reaction of rosin and industrial fatty acids and then converted into its zinc soap (RODA-Zn) and calcium soap (RODA-Ca). The chemical structures were examined by UV–Vis and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopies. Liquid form thermal stabilizers (RODA-LTS) were obtained by treating the solid RODA-Zn and RODA-Ca soaps with epoxidized soybean oil, triphenyl phosphite and liquid paraffin at 120 °C for 3 h. Thermal stabilizing effects of the resulting RODA-LTS for PVC were compared with that of two commercial LTSs. Thermal stability of PVC compounds was determined using dehydrochlorination test, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Congo red test and torque rheological analysis. Results indicated that RODA-LTS had overall superior thermal stability. Tensile and dynamic mechanical properties of the PVC compounds were also studied, and the results indicated that the PVC compounds stabilized with RODA-LTS and commercial LTSs displayed comparable strength, modulus and glass transition temperatures.

Abstract:In this study, binary‐ and ternary‐layered double hydroxides (LDHs) loaded with titanium dioxide (TiO2‐ZnAl and TiO2‐ZnAlSn) were synthesized by a one‐step in situ coprecipitation method and then used as thermal and light stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride (PVC). TiO2‐ZnAlSn has a unique nanostructure, high thermal stability, and good ultraviolet (UV)‐shielding property. The Congo red test shows that the static thermal stability time of PVC/TiO2‐ZnAlSn composite is 370% higher than that of pure PVC. The thermogravimetric analysis and accelerated weathering test suggest that the incorporation of TiO2‐ZnAlSn into the PVC matrix improves the thermal stability and anti‐UV‐aging property of the resulting composite, which is probably related to the lower photoluminescence intensity and formation of more O2−. This study provides a simple method to prepare TiO2‐loaded ZnAlSn‐LDH as multifunctional nanofillers for PVC.
