Abstract:Under the dual pressure of energy conservation and environmental protection, the internal combustion engine industry is facing huge challenges, and it is imperative to find new clean energy. Hydrogen energy is expected to replace traditional fossil fuels as an excellent fuel for internal combustion engines because of its clean, continuous regeneration and good combustion performance. This review article focuses on the research and development of blended hydrogen-fuel internal combustion engines in China since the beginning of this century. The main achievements gained by Chinese researchers in performing research on the effects of the addition of hydrogen into engines, which predominantly include many types of hydrogen-blended engines such as gasoline, diesel, natural gas, and alcohol engines, rotary engines, are discussed and analyzed in these areas of the engine's performance, and the combustion and emission characteristics, etc. The merits and demerits of blended hydrogen-fuel internal combustion engines could be concluded and summarized after discussion. Finally, the development trend and direction of exploration on hydrogen-fuel internal combustion engines could also be forecasted for relevant researchers.

Abstract:The development of new energy sources to change or lessen the use of conventional nonrenewable energy is also driven by the growing concern over pollution from internal combustion engines. In this situation, it is discovered that using hydrogen in internal combustion engines offer a possible solution to these problems. The unique physical and chemical characteristics of hydrogen for internal combustion engines (ICEs) are called out. There are several hydrogen production techniques are discussed as water electrolysis (solar & wind energy), gasification of biomass, coal gasification, methanol and ammonia decomposition, steam reforming process and photochemical splitting of water. The majority of research found that hydrogen enrichment fuels significantly improved engine performance in terms of thermal efficiency, energy consumption, and fuel consumption. Furthermore, given suitable operating circumstances, both spark-ignition (SI) and compression-ignition (CI) engines can achieve declines in exhaust pollutants such as HC, CO, CO2, NOx, smoke, and soot, and also summarize the utilization of hydrogen in the SI and CI engines aided improvements in engine performance and exhaust emissions under appropriate operating conditions. An assessment of various fuel induction techniques (fuel carburation, port fuel injection and direct injection) and the paybacks of using the synergies of particular solutions is offered, as well as an overview of the use of hydrogen as an internal combustion fuel, covering operations in both SI and CI engines. The objective of this study is to deliver a comprehensive review related to the hydrogen production techniques, the effect on performance and emissions of hydrogen addition as a fuel and injection techniques in a spark ignition and compression ignition engine, and future challenges have been discussed in this article.

Abstract:Huge and continuously growing non-renewable energy consumption due to human daily activities is accountable for the fossil fuel source crisis in recent decades. The growing concern about the emissions from internal combustion engines also impels the development of new energy sources to replace or reduce conventional non-renewable energy usage. In this context, hydrogen is found to be a promising solution in internal combustion engines to address these issues. The novelty of this review is to provide an overview of the use of hydrogen as internal combustion fuel, covering the operations in both spark-ignition (SI) and compression-ignition (CI) engines. Majority of the studies had shown that hydrogen enrichment fuels marked incredible engine performance in terms of thermal efficiency, fuel consumption and energy consumption. In addition, reductions in exhaust emissions such as smoke, soot, HC, CO, CO 2 and NOx can be achieved in both SI and CI engines with proper operating conditions. Moreover, outstanding combustion behaviours were observed in both internal combustion engines with the application of hydrogen fuel. These enhancements were mainly attributed to the physicochemical properties of hydrogen, which exhibits higher calorific value and rapid flaming speed as discussed in this paper. To summarize, hydrogen utilisation in the IC and SI engines aided improvements in engine performance, exhaust emissions, and combustion behaviours under appropriate operating conditions and minor engine modifications such as ignition system and iridium spark plug for SI engines.

Abstract:The SQR480 engine which formerly uses gasoline as fuel was refitted into a hydrogen fueled engine.The fuel delivery system was redesigned.The new plan adopted the hydrogen manifold sequential multipoint injection,sequential non-distributor ignition,the refitted PCV,the electronic throttle valve and(electrically) controlled EGR valve.A high performance 16-bit MCU was used in the engine control unit,and with the aid of the peripheral circuit,the hydrogen-fueled engine ECU was developed.The researchers also developed the system software,the application software and the fault diagnosis software based on the control strategy.The calibration for hydrogen-fueled engine performance was carried out with the calibration and monitor software which used the K-line communication.The researchers successfully realized the start and speed PID control,at the same time,the parameters were optimized with the aim of avoiding backfire and pre-ignition.

Abstract:In the face of the electrification trend in transportation, the internal combustion engine (ICE) is expected to continue playing a vital role in generating electricity for power systems or directly propelling vehicles in certain sectors. However, ICEs are also under significant pressure to achieve carbon neutrality, with the key lying in carbon-free fuels. Ammonia, compared to hydrogen, offers advantages in terms of hydrogen-carrying capacity, storage and transportation convenience, and safety, making it a promising carbon-free fuel for large-scale use in ICEs. Nonetheless, ammonia's combustion inertness poses challenges for its application, requiring efforts to enhance its combustion. Hydrogen, as a carbon-free and highly reactive fuel, serves as a powerful combustion promoter, maximizing the carbon-free effect of ammonia. Furthermore, on-board ammonia decomposition can produce hydrogen, ensuring a stable hydrogen supply and enabling ammonia-hydrogen synergy combustion while carrying only ammonia. This ammonia-hydrogen synergy combustion, based on on-board hydrogen production, presents a highly promising development direction for ammonia engines. When combined with hybridization, it further enhances the overall energy efficiency of ammonia. The objective of this paper is to review recent advancements in ammonia-hydrogen engines, covering topics such as ignition methods and combustion strategies, fuel supply, pollutants, and after-treatment. Based on this review, a conceptual ammonia-hydrogen engine for hybrid power systems is proposed. This engine ignites the ammonia-hydrogen mixture in the main chamber using hydrogen active jet ignition, achieving spark-assisted compression ignition. Technical measures for efficient engine combustion, synergistic utilization of exhaust heat for hydrogen production, and effective after-treatment of NOx, unburned NH3, and N2O are discussed. At last, some perspectives on the development of ammonia-hydrogen engines are also presented.

Abstract:This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the selected properties of HCNG fuel calculations and a literature review of the other fuels that allow the storage of ecologically produced hydrogen. Hydrogen has the most significant CO2 reduction potential of all known fuels. However, its transmission in pure form is still problematic, and its use as a component of fuels modified by it has now become an issue of interest for researchers. Many types of hydrogen-enriched fuels have been invented. However, this article will describe the reasons why HCNG may be the hydrogen-enriched fuel of the future and why internal combustion (IC) piston engines working on two types of fuel could be the future method of using it. CO2 emissions are currently a serious problem in protecting the Earth's natural climate. However, secondarily, power grid stabilization with a large share of electricity production from renewable energy sources must be stabilized with very flexible sources—as flexible as multi-fuel IC engines. Their use is becoming an essential element of the electricity power systems of Western countries, and there is a chance to use fuels with zero or close to zero CO2 emissions, like e-fuels and HCNG. Dual-fuel engines have become an effective way of using these types of fuels efficiently; therefore, in this article, the parameters of hydrogen-enriched fuel selected in terms of relevance to the use of IC engines are considered. Inaccuracies found in the literature analysis are discussed, and the essential properties of HCNG and its advantages over other hydrogen-rich fuels are summarized in terms of its use in dual-fuel (DF) IC engines.

Abstract:Petroleum has been used as the power source for internal combustion engines for hundreds of years. Nowadays, the problems of fossil energy shortage and environmental pollution are becoming increasingly serious. In response to China's carbon neutrality strategy, it is urgent to seek alternative fuels that can replace petroleum as the power source of internal combustion engines. The challenges of alternative fuels include reducing post-combustion pollutant emissions and being able to recycle them while maintaining the original engine performance. Using hydrogen as fuel can reduce automobile exhaust emissions, promote the development of hydrogen internal combustion engines, and achieve sustainable social and economic development. This article reviews the ideality of hydrogen as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines and the combustion characteristics of hydrogen internal combustion engines. The bottleneck problems (such as abnormal combustion, NOx emission control and power recovery) that need to be solved urgently in the development of hydrogen internal combustion engines are pointed out. It’s found that these problems can be solved by the combination of software simulation and experimental verification in practice.
Numerical investigation on gaseous fuel injection strategies on combustion characteristics and NO emission performance in a pure hydrogen engine

Abstract:With the proposal of "dual-carbon" goals and increasingly stringent emission regulations, hydrogen as a zero-carbon alternative fuel has great potential in engine applications. In the appliance of pure hydrogen engines, direct injection plus lean burn technology can effectively improve engine performance and reduce emissions. Therefore, this work establishes a three-dimensional (3D) simulation model of the pure hydrogen spark-ignition internal combustion engine (ICE) coupled with chemical reaction kinetics. Then, the applicability of different commonly used hydrogen simplified mechanisms to characterize the combustion process based on experimental data is evaluated, and the feasibility of the transient calculation model is verified. Then, the engine combustion and emission performance are compared by adopting hydrogen port injection (HPI) and hydrogen direct injection (HDI) strategies. Meanwhile, the effects of hydrogen injection timing (HIT) on flow, combustion and nitric oxide (NO) emission processes under direct injection plus lean burn mode are analyzed. The results show that: 1. For mixture distribution at ignition timing (IT), the hydrogen should be distributed near the spark plug and avoid its concentration being too rich since the richer mixture will lead to intense combustion and rapid heat release. 2. When using HDI mode, the engine combustion performance and power performance are better than that of the HPI mode. Delaying HIT, the power performance improves under HDI modes, while both the indicated thermal efficiency (ITE) and indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) reached the maximum at Case6-HDI-100 with the values are 40.52 % and 0.498 MPa, respectively. 3. Considering the engine combustion, power and emission performance, Case6-HDI-100 (HIT at 100 °CA BTDC) is the preferred scheme. Its ITE and IMEP are 8.49 % and 37.33 % higher than that of Case1-HPI (HPI mode scheme) and 6.50 % and 14.95 % higher than that of Case4-HDI-220 (the lowest scheme under HDI mode), respectively, while nitrogen oxide (NO x ) emissions meet the European Stage V non-road emission standards. This study provides some reference values for the combustion design of pure hydrogen ICEs.

Abstract:This paper put forward a device installed into the fuel system,which used the sliding electric arc to electrolyze the natural gas to make hydrogen and then blend them into the fuel pipe for final combustion.We could re-equip the compressed natural gas(CNG) engine to hydrogen enriched compressed natural gas(HCNG) engine easily.The test research of the engine emissions characteristics using different hydrogen-CNG ratios was conducted when the excess air ratios and the spark advance angles were different.The results show that HC and CO emissions of engine fueled with HCNG reduce when NOx emissions increase.The NOx emissions are reduced greatly with the increase of the excess air ratio or the decrease of the spark advance angle.Comparative experiments of the performance characteristics of engine burned with HCNG whose volume hydrogen-CNG ratio was 20% and CNG were conducted under wide open throttle operating conditions.The results show that the torque output is unchanged when 20%HCNG is burned compared with CNG engine,but the fuel consumption is reduced and the fuel economy is improved.

Abstract:Motor vehicles are the backbone of global transport. In recent years, due to the rising costs of fossil fuels and increasing concerns about their negative impact on the natural environment, the development of low-emission power supply systems for vehicles has been observed. In order to create a stable and safe global transport system, an important issue seems to be the diversification of propulsion systems for vehicles, which can be achieved through the simultaneous development of conventional internal combustion vehicles, electric vehicles (both battery and fuel cell powered) as well as combustion hydrogen-powered vehicles. This publication presents an overview of commercial vehicles (available on the market) powered by internal combustion hydrogen engines. The work focuses on presenting the development of technology from the point of view of introducing ready-made hydrogen-powered vehicles to the market or technical solutions enabling the use of hydrogen mixtures in internal combustion engines. The study covers the history of the technology, dedicated hydrogen and bi-fuel vehicles, and vehicles with an engine powered by a mixture of conventional fuels and hydrogen. It presents basic technology parameters and solutions introduced by leading vehicle manufacturers in the vehicle market.

Abstract:Due to future crisis of energy and environmental degradation due to a carbon-containing fuel, hydrogen utilization as a fuel may be better for the near future. Hydrogen’s vitality content per unit volume and larger heating esteem is around 3 times when compared with present fossil fuel [1], and it has a wide range of combustibility limits, and just requires a modest quantity of energy to initiate ignition, also for H2 fuel ignition product is water vapour which doesn’t affect the environment. This paper presents H2 usage as a fuel in IC engines, and it also contains a study on its performance as compared to other fuel and mainly concentrates on various existing methods and various researches of H2 production systems [3] which used to generate H2 and inject it as a replacement for fuel in carburetor air intake. All data of different combustion characteristics was collected from a research paper of various authors [1], [8] given in the reference. The results obtained shows that the greatest estimation of Brake mean effective pressure is acquired at an engine speed of 3000 rpm, this is because of the appropriate burning in engine and increasing H2 content, the CO2 content decreases. It is found that when H2 blends are used as fuel in IC engine, the brake thermal efficiency and most of the emissions were improved.

Abstract:Several studies have revealed the high GHG emissions of the road sector compared with other sectors. One alternative is to replace fossil fuels with others that are less harmful to the environment. Hydrogen is positioned as an adaptable solution for existing engines, especially internal combustion engines. This article presents an analysis of internal combustion engines and the different fuels used to date. In addition, the properties of hydrogen, and the current state of research into the use of hydrogen in internal combustion engines, are discussed. After a presentation of the properties of hydrogen, it goes on to describe the hydrogen combustion process, the possible anomalies caused by its properties, and a few possible modifications for adapting an internal-combustion engine to hydrogen, initially using either gasoline or diesel. Abstract:The advancement of hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engines (H 2 ICEs) encourages a growing interest in studying the economic viability of hydrogen as a fuel for internal combustion engines (ICEs). The current study is a literature review based on the bibliometric method to analyse bibliographic data and generate visual representations and historical development of scientific studies on H 2 ICEs. The study analyses 2892 Scopus database documents from 1927 to 2023, including publication trends, publication types, research areas, sources, citations, collaborations, bursts, and keywords analysis, using VOSviewer (v1.6.19), CiteSpace (v6.2. R4), and Microsoft Excel. China, India, the United States, and Verhelst S., with a burst strength of 14.18, prevail in H 2 ICE studies. The analysis suggests major hotspot keywords for future studies, including nanoparticles, ammonia, machine learning, optimisation, injection strategy, learning algorithms, and ignition timing, with a focus on addressing major concerns, including knock, backfire, NOx emissions, and optimising the thermal and fuel efficiency of the engine.

Abstract:The global trend toward decarbonization is inspiring researchers to search for low or even zero carbon fuels for internal combustion engines. Ammonia (NH3) is considered a potential alternative fuel to conventional gasoline and diesel without carbon emissions. Although it is not an ideal fuel for use in engines due to its poor combustion properties, the use of hydrogen (H-2), which has low ignition energy and can be decomposed from ammonia, as a combustion promoter can enhance its suitability for engine applications. A careful literature review indicates that the relatively few existing studies on NH3/H-2 engines and the uncertainty of the NH3/H-2 chemistry under typical high-temperature and high-pressure engine environments limit the determination of the ammonia-tohydrogen ratio. However, this question is important when converting an existing engine to ammonia operation because it is related to compression ratio determination, aftertreatment design, ECU mapping, and on-board hydrogen production rate requirements. In other words, this outstanding question would affect the simultaneous design of other accessory systems and the development of ammonia engines. To increase the knowledge of the hydrogen concentration in the fuel feed of ammonia fueled engines in the engine community, this study discusses this question from the perspective of laminar flame speed (LFS), because it is closely related to reactivity, diffusivity, and exothermicity, which is a macroscopic parameter of premixed combustion and directly affects the efficiency and emissions of spark ignition engines. Specifically, the required proportion of hydrogen blended with ammonia is determined by comparing the NH3/H-2 reaction time scale with the millisecond combustion time scale in typical engines. The results show that high temperature enhances the LFS of ammonia, hydrogen and their mixtures, while pressure has an inhibitory effect. In addition, increasing the compression ratio and avoiding fuel-lean operation are effective ways to improve the performance of ammonia combustion with less hydrogen. Considering the high required hydrogen consumption rate and the full load conditions that guarantee high combustion efficiency, off-road application may be a suitable scenario for ammonia-hydrogen engines. Before applying ammonia to automobiles, the technology for onboard hydrogen production should be effectively developed.

Abstract:Hydrogen-powered mobility is believed to be crucial in the future, as hydrogen constitutes a promising solution to make up for the non-programmable character of the renewable energy sources. In this context, the hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine represents one of the suitable technical solutions for the future of sustainable mobility. As a matter of fact, hydrogen engines suffer from limitations in volumetric efficiency due to the very low density of the fuel. Consequently, hydrogen-fueled ICEs can reach sufficient torque and power density only if suitable supercharging solutions are developed. Moreover, gaseous-engine performance can be improved to a great extent if direct injection is applied. In this perspective, a remarkable know-how has been developed in the last two decades on NG engines, which can be successfully exploited in this context. The objective of this paper is twofold. In the first part, a feasibility study has been carried out with reference to a typical 2000cc SI engine by means of 1D simulations. This study was aimed at characterizing the performance on the full load curve with respect to a baseline PFI engine fueled by NG. In this phase, the turbocharging/supercharging device has not been included in the model in order to quantify the attainable benefits in the absence of any limitation coming from the turbocharger. In the second part of this paper, the conversion of a prototype 1400cc direct injection NG engine, running with stoichiometric mixture, to run on a lean hydrogen combustion mode has been investigated via 1D simulations. The matching between engine and turbocharger has been included in the model, and the effects of two different turbomatching choices have been presented and discussed.

Abstract:The development of combustion models, paired with the usage of biofuels, has been viewed as an effective way to minimize pollutant emissions such as CO, HC, NOx, and smoke. Indeed, homogenous Charge Compression Ignition is a novel strategy to significantly reducing NOx emissions and smoke due to lower cylinder temperature and a higher rate of homogenous air fuel mixture as compared to compression ignition engines. The experimental findings demonstrated the maximum brake thermal efficiency, despite a 4.1% decrease compared to diesel in normal mode. Hydrogen energy is a key technical pathway for achieving carbon peak and neutrality. One method of utilizing hydrogen energy is through a direct injection engine. It has the advantage of increasing thermal efficiency and reducing aberrant combustion phenomena.The impact of using hydrogen to increase fuel economy and considerably reduce exhaust emissions.
