Abstract:A novel dendritic europium complex Eu(TCPD)(3)(Phen) with carbazole units as the periphery has been prepared and the device ITO//NPB//CBP:Eu(TCPD)(3)(Phen)//BCP//Mg:Ag gave out white light with the CIE coordinate (0.333, 0.348) at 16.2 V and maximum external quantum efficiency of 1.1%.

Abstract:The new complex of Eu(BA)_2(MAA)(Phen) is synthesized and is used as a red light-emitting material in our organic electroluminescent devices with the structure of ITO/TPD/Eu(BA)_2(MAA)(Phen).The brightness of 15 cd/m~2 and luminous efficiency of 0.25 lm/W are achieved at the voltage of 26 V. This material has strong photoluminescence and relatively good electroluminescence along with excellent mono-chromaticity.The mechanism of this EL device is discussed.
Carbazole-Functionalized Europium Complex and Its High-Efficiency Organic Electroluminescent Properties

Abstract:A complex tris(dibenzoylmethanato){1-ethyl-2-(N-ethyl-carbazole-yl-4) imidazo[4,5-f]1,10phenanthroline} europium(III) [Eu(DBM)3phencarz] functionalized by a hole-transport group carbazole was synthesized. Devices using this complex as emitter showed greatly enhanced performance benefited from the increased hole-transport properties and efficient energy transfer from carbazole to the central ions. A 58-nm-single-layer device gave a brightness of 20 cd/m2 at 15 V. The highest power efficiency of 2.7 lm/W at 5 V and 0.5 cd/m2 and the luminance exceeding 2000 cd/m2 at 20 V was obtained from a device with the configuration of ITO/TPD(20 nm)/Eu(DBM)3phencarz(40 nm)/BCP(20 nm)/AlQ(40 nm)/Mg0.9Ag0.1(200 nm)/Ag(80 nm).

Abstract:The photoluminescence properties of one europium complex Eu(TFNB)3Phen (TFNB = 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-(naphthyl)-1,3-butanedione, Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) doped in a hole-transporting material CBP (4,4′-N,N′-dicarbazole-biphenyl) films were studied. A series of organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) using Eu(TFNB)3Phen as the emitter were fabricated with a multilayer structure of indium tin oxide, 250Ω/square)/TPD (N,N′-diphenyl-N,N′-bis(3-methyllphenyl)-(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diamine, 50nm)/Eu(TFNB)3phen (x): CBP (4,4′-N,N′-dicarbazole-biphenyl, 45nm)/BCP (2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-l,10 phenanthroline, 20nm)/AlQ (tris(8-hydroxy-quinoline) aluminium, 30nm)/LiF (1nm)/Al (100nm), where x is the weight percentage of Eu(TFNB)3phen doped in the CBP matrix (1–6%). A red emission at 612nm with a half bandwidth of 3nm, characteristic of Eu(III) ion, was observed with all devices. The device with a 3% dopant concentration shows the maximum luminance up to 1169cd/m2 (18V) and the device with a 5% dopant concentration exhibits a current efficiency of 4.46cd/A and power efficiency of 2.03lm/W. The mechanism of the electroluminescence was also discussed.

Abstract:The photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) properties of a trimetallic dendritic europium (III) complex containing three metal cores as branching centers, tris(dibenzoylmethanato) (1,3,5-tris[2-(2′-pyridyl)benzimidazoly]methyl-benzene)-europium (III) (Eu3(DBM)9(TMMB)), have been investigated and reported. Red and white emissions have been acquired in the four EL devices of device A–D. Characteristic red emission peaking at 613nm with four shoulder bands due to the 5D0→7Fj (j=0–4) transitions of Eu3(DBM)9(TMMB) is observed in devices A–C. Device D with a simple non-doping device structure showed a white emission band. Also, the optical and the electrochemical properties of Eu3(DBM)9(TMMB) have been characterized to possess a better understanding on the intramolecular energy transfer process. It is concluded that dendritic structure with three DBM ligands as “absorption antennas” facilitates the energy absorption and transportation of the complex.
Bright and Monochromic Red Light-Emitting Electroluminescence Devices Based on a New Multifunctional Europium Ternary Complex

Abstract:A novel europium(III) complex, tris(dibenzoylmethanato)(2-4'-triphenylamino)imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline)europium(III), Eu(DBM)(3)(TPIP), is synthesized. The light-emitting center, hole-transporting triphenylamine and electron-transporting phenanthroline fragments are integrated into one molecule. A single-layer device of ITO/Eu(DBM)(3)(TPIP)(60 nm)/Mg0.9Ag0.1/Ag exhibits Eu-III-based pure red emission with a maximum brightness of 19 cd m(-2) at 13.5 V and 280 mA cm(-2), and an onset driving voltage of 8 V. A four-layer device of ITO/TPD (20 nm)/Eu(DBM)(3)(TPIP) (40 nm)/BCP (20 nm)/AlQ(40 nm)/Mg0.9Ag0.1/Ag gives a maximum Eu-III-based pure red emitting luminance of 1305 cd m(-2) at 16 V and 255 mA cm(-2) with an onset driving voltage of 6 V; the maximum external quantum yield and luminous yield are estimated to be 0.85% and 1.44 lm W-1, respectively, at 7.5 V and 0.25 mA cm(-2).

Abstract:The electrochemical and electroluminescent properties of some europium complexes and the terpolymers of 9-vinylcarbazole,methyl methacrylate and europium-methacrylate complex were investigated. Cyclic voltammetry measurements of poly(VK-co-MMA-co-Eu(BA)(2)(MAA) phen) (Cl) showed a quasi-reversible oxidation peak with onset of 0.75 V,and an irreversible reduction peak with onset of -1.8 V. The results demonstrated that this kind of multi-functional material has both hole- and electron-transporting properties. Some light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on the europium containing complex and copolymers were fabricated. All these devices exhibited characteristic sharp red electroluminescence when forward biases were applied, and the turn-on voltage was in the range of 12 similar to 27 V. A maximum brightness of 52 cd/m(2) with a luminous efficiency of about 0.031 1m/W was achieved from a single-layer device based on the multi-functional copolymer C3. EL spectra of the devices showed that the emissions were from the corresponding lanthanide-complex units,instead of carbazole groups of the copolymers. It is suggested that the carbazole groups in Cn serve as hole-transport material while electron transfer may occur through the lanthanide-containing moieties of the same copolymer.
Electroluminescent Properties of Three Ternary Europium Complexes with Different Phenanthroline Derivatives

Abstract:Three ternary Eu(III) complexes with general formula of Eu(DBM)3LN (DBM = dibenzoylmethanate, and LN (N = 1-3 ) stand for three different 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives) have been synthesized for vacuum deposition films-based electroluminescent devices. The complex Eu(DBM)3L3 (L3 = 2-phenyl-3-[3-(carbazol-9-yl)propyl]imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenan-throline) was designed with an effort to combine the electron-transporting phenanthroline platform and the hole-transporting carbazole group into one molecule expecting to improve both electron and hole transporting properties simultaneously. The results show that the variation of the neutral ligands in Eu(III) mixed ligand complexes is a simple and effective approach to the improvement in the thermal stability, PL and EL properties of materials. A double-layer device with the configuration of ITO/TPD (50 nm)/Eu(DBM)3L3 (50 nm)/Mg0.9Ag0.1 (200 nm)/Ag (100 nm) exhibited Eu(III)-based pure red emission with a maximum brightness of 561 cd/m2 at 16 V, and an onset driving voltage of 8 V. A device with the configuration of ITO/TPD (50 nm)/[Eu(DBM)3L3 (5 nm):BCP (5 nm)]4/BCP (20 nm)/AIQ (10 nm) Mg0.9Ag0.9 (110 nm)/Ag (100 nm) gave high efficient and pure red light emission with a luminance of 1419 cd/m2.

Abstract:In order to develop new materials for red electroluminescent devices, a novel ligand, 2-phenyl-imidazo[4,5-f]1,10-phenanthroline (L), and an europium (III) complex with dibenzoylmethanate (DBM), Eu(DBM)3L, was synthesized. The crystal structure of Eu(DBM)3L was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal of Eu(DBM)3L belongs to orthorhombic, space group Pbca with cell dimensions of a=2.1655(6) nm, b=2.0834(5) nm, c=2.6469(7) nm, V=11.942(5) nm3, Z=8, Dx=1.307 g/cm3. Each europium atom is coordinated with six oxygen atoms from three bidentate DBM anions and two nitrogen atoms from one bidentate L, forming a distorted square antiprism. The complex is easily evaporated and can be used as a red light emitting material. Upon improvement, the device with a structure of ITO/N,N′-diphenyl-N,N′-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine (TPD) (40 nm)/Eu(DBM)3L (50 nm)/2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bathocuproine or BCP) (20 nm)/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (ALQ) (30 nm)/cathode gives off pure red light with luminance of 42 cd/m2 at 16 V.
Bright Red Light-Emitting Electroluminescence Devices Based on A Functionalized Europium Complex

A triple-layer device with the configuration of ITO/TPD(40 nm)/Eu(DBM)(3)(CPIP)(30 nm)/Eu(DBM)(3) Bath(50 nm)/Mg0.9Ag0.1 (200 nm)/Ag (80 nm) also emitted pure red light with a highest brightness of 1050 cd m(-2) at 16 V and the highest power efficiency of 0.50 lm W-1 at 8 V, 8 cd m(-2). The highest brightness 1460 cd m(-2) at 14 V was obtained from a four-layer device with the configuration of ITO/TPD(40 nm)/Eu(DBM)(3)(CPIP)(40 nm)/BCP(20 nm)/AlQ(10 nm)/Mg0.9Ag0.1( 200 nm)/Ag(80 nm) and the highest power efficiency of 0.54 lm W-1 at 7 V, 56 cd m(-2).

Abstract:Using two different trivalent europium (Eu3+) complexes, europium(dibenzoylmethanato)(3)(bathophenanthroline) [Eu(DBM)(3)bath] and europium(dibenzoylmethanato)(3)(monophenanthroline) [Eu(DBM)(3)phen], with different ligands for emission-layer materials, various types of electroluminescent (EL) devices have been fabricated. Combined with a triphenylamine derivative (TPD) and an oxadiazole derivative (OXD7) as hole-transport-layer materials, two-layer-and three-layer-type devices have been fabricated. We find that these two emission-layer materials have similar EL spectra, but their EL performances are different. The EL capability of the Eu complexes and their carrier-transporting characteristics are largely dependent on the ligands. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting devices were fabricated, wherein europium β-diketonates of the general formula Eu(X)3(L) are the active emitting materials [L=2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPTZ) or 4,4′-dimethoxy-2,2′-bipyridine (dmbipy); X is the conjugate base of 4,4,4-trifluoro-1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione (HBTFA), thenoyltrifluoroacetone (HTTA), or 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedione (HHFAC)]. Red luminescence characteristic of Eu(III) at about 614 nm was observed in each of the five devices of the general device configuration ITO/NPB/Eu(X)3(L):CBP/BCP/AlQ/LiF/Al [ITO, indium tin oxide; NPB, 4,4′-bis[n-(1-naphthyl)-N-phenyl-amino]biphenyl; CBP, 4,4′-N,N′-dicarbazolebiphenyl; BCP, 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline; AlQ, tris(8-hydroxy)quinoline aluminum]. Except for Eu(BTFA)3(TPTZ), each of the other four complexes gave practically meaningful device performance. In particular, the device utilizing Eu(TTA)3(TPTZ) exhibited a maximum brightness of 781 cd/m2 and the highest current efficiency reported so far of 4.76 cd/A at a typical computer screen brightness (100 cd/m2).

Abstract:Electroluminescent devices using a ternary europium complex Eu(DBM)3(hhpy)2 (dibenzoylmethane, DBM; hexahydro pyridine, hhpy) as an emitting layer, poly(vinyl-carbazole) (PVK) as a hole-transporting material and tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) as an electron-transporting material have been fabricated. When only using Eu(DBM)3(hhpy)2 as the emitting layer, luminance of 2.52cd/m2 with pure Eu3+ EL emissions from devices is achieved. Introducing a hole transporting material PVK and an electron transporting material 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxidiazole (PBD) in the emitting layer, luminance of 100cd/m2 is achieved, and the eletroluminescence efficiency is enhanced by about two orders of magnitude.

Abstract:A novel poly-ligand europium β-diketone complex was prepared, which contains ligand of 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4(4-butylbenzoyl)-5-pyrazolone (HPMBBP). Its structure is Eu(TTA)2(PMBBP)Phen. We investigated its PL and EL properties. When it was used as emitting material, the new Eu-complex exhibited intense photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) at 613 nm in a fabricated three-layer electroluminescent device: ITO/TPD/Eu(TTA)2(PMBBP)Phen/Alq3/Mg:Ag. The maximum luminance of 16 cd/m2 from the device was obtained at 12.5 V.

Abstract:Two new organo-europium complexes (OEuCs) [Eu(tfac)3(TB-Im)] (Eu1) [Eu(hfac)3(TB-Im)] (Eu2) incorporating fluorinated (hexafluoroacetylacetone; Hhfaa) or hemi-fluorinated (trifluoroacetylacetone; Htfac) β-diketones together with the large bite angle N^N ligand (2-(4-Thiazolyl)benzimidazole; TB-Im) have been synthesized and characterized. The structure of the complexes has been established by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis and shows that the coordination sphere is composed of a EuO6N2 core (octacoordinated). Continuous shape measures (CShMs) revealed that the geometry around Eu(III) is trigonal dodecahedral with approximate D2d-symmetry. Efficient red emission is observed for both the complexes in solution with a fairly large photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY ( ) = 39.00 – 47.00%). Furthermore, utilizing the experimental photoluminescence (PL) data and theoretical modelling employing density functional theory (DFT) in conjunction with LUMPAC, energy transfer (ET) and back energy transfer rates were calculated, and an energy transfer (ET) mechanism for the sensitized PL is proposed and discussed in detail. Finally, the complexes were used as an emitting layer (EML) to fabricate 20 organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) by varying the doping concentration. Interestingly, both the complex-based OLEDs at 4 wt% doping concentration displays white electroluminescence (EL) with the brightness (B) = 100.5 – 364.1 cd/m2 at very low turn-on voltage (Vturn-on) = 3.9 – 4.6 V. The overall electroluminescent performance of Eu1 and Eu2 are higher than the reported europium based single component white-OLEDs.

Abstract:A novel binuclear europium and yttrium β-diketone complex EuY(TTA)6Phen2 was synthesized. The electroluminescent device using it as an emitter was fabricated. When the structure of device is ITO/TPD/EuY(TTA)6Phen2/Alq3/Mg:Ag, the emission peak of 613 nm and the luminance of 99 cd/m2 at 11 V from the device have been achieved. The results showed that the new β-diketone chelate possessed better PL and EL properties, and film formation than those of Eu(TTA)3Phen.
Highly improved electroluminescence from double-layer devices based on a carbazole-functionalized europium 3+ complex

Abstract:A novel europium complex Eu(TTA) 3 (CPPO) 2 ( 1) (TTA=thenoyltrifluoroacetone, CPPO=9-[4-(diphenyl-phosphinoyl)-phenyl]-9H-carbazole) based on the phosphine oxide ligand with bipolar structure was used to fabricate double-layer devices. The strong hole injection and transport ability of 1 was proved. The luminance of 414 cd m −2 was achieved with the device configuration ITO/Eu(TTA) 3 (CPPO) 2 (40 nm)/BCP (30 nm)/Mg:Ag (BCP = 2, 9-dimethyl-4, 7-diphenyl-1, 10-phenanthroline), which is favorable among double-layer organic light emitting devices based on small molecular Eu 3+ complexes. The maximum current efficiency of 2.44 cd A −1 and external quantum efficiency of 1.55% demonstrate the potential application of 1 as a promising candidate for high-efficiency, simple-structure and pure red-emitting devices.
Enhanced Brightness of Eu3+ Complex in Organic Electroluminescent Devices by Using Another Rare-Earth Ion

Abstract:Rare-earth ions Tb3+ and La3+ were used as a bridge to improve the energy transfer from the polymer to an Eu complex. The material Tb(La)0.5Eu0.5(BSA)3phen was synthesized and used as the emission layer in the device: ITO/PVK:Tb(La)0.5Eu0.5(BSA)3phen/Alq/Al. The two device were compared in detail and it was found that the device using La0.5Eu0.5(BSA)3phen as the emission material had better monochromatic characteristics with the maximal brightness of 102 cd/m2 and the colour coordinates x = 0.55 and y = 0.36.

Abstract:Several 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives (PhoR), 2,2′-bipyridine derivatives (BpoR) and related europium complexes Eu(TTA)3PhoR and Eu(TTA)3BpoR were synthesized (HTTA = 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone). Single crystal X-ray diffraction of Eu(TTA)3Php (Php = 2-(pyridyl)-1,10-phenanthroline) shows that Php acts as a tridentate N⁁N⁁N ligand, leading to a high stability of the complex for vacuum evaporation. When an oxadiazole moiety is incorporated into the ligand, the corresponding europium complexes show improved carrier-transporting abilities as well as thermal stabilities under vapor deposition for electroluminescence (EL) applications. Experiments revealed that these complexes have high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields due to suitable triplet energy levels (ET) of the ligands, between 19 724 and 22 472 cm−1, for the sensitization of Eu(III) (5D0: 17 500 cm−1). Utilizing Eu(TTA)3PhoB (PhoB = 2-(5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline) as the dopant emitter in CBP (4,4′-N,N′-dicarbazolebiphenyl), EL devices with a structure of TPD (4,4′-bis[N-(p-tolyl)-N-phenylamino] biphenyl, 30 nm)/Eu(TTA)3PhoB:CBP (7.5%, 20nm)/BCP (2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, 20 nm)/Alq3 (tris(8-hydroxyquinoline), 30 nm) exhibited a pure emission from europium ions. The highest efficiency obtained was 5.5 lm W−1, 8.7 cd A−1 and the maximum brightness achieved was 1086 cd m−2. At a practical brightness of 100 cd m−2, the efficiency remains above 2.0 cd A−1.

Abstract:Nearly monochromatic-red-light-emitting polymers with pendant carbazole and europium (Eu) complex were synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared, elemental analysis (EA), 1H NMR, 13C NMR, UV, and gel permeation chromatography. The photoluminescence and electroluminescence (EL) properties of these polymers were investigated. A single-layer light-emitting-diode device of the structure (indium tin oxide/polymer P4/Al) was fabricated, showing the characteristic bright-red EL of the Eu3+ complex at 614 nm at a turn-on voltage of about 17 V. Abstract:A thin film electroluminescence cell with the structure of ITO/PPV/PVK:Eu(TTA)(4)C5H5NC16H33:PBD/Alq(3)/Al has been fabricated. Red emission with a very sharp spectral band at 614nm was observed and a maximum luminance of 20cd . m(-2) at 36V was obtained from the spin-coated device. The full width at half maximum of luminescent spectrum is less than 10nm.
