Abstract:Distributed pumping system demonstrates advantages in energy saving and hydraulic stability. This paper analyzes the mechanism of the distributed pumping system for energy saving and studies the characteristics of energy consumption under the design condition, as well as the flow regulation operations in the conventional pumping system and in the distributed pumping systems. The experimental results show that the distributed pumping system saves about 12 % energy under the design condition compared with the conventional pumping system and around 39 % energy when the mixing ratio (μ) is unity for the conventional pumping system. Also, the dimensionless flow rate is adopted as an index to evaluate the hydraulic stability of the distributed pumping system. The experimental results also show that positioning the datum point of zero pressure at the central part of the main pipes, equipping the equalizer pipes among the pumps, and reducing the pressure losses in the main pipes efficiently improve the hydraulic stability of the distributed pumping system.

Abstract:The calculation formula for energy saving rate of the distributed circulating pump heat-supply system reconstructed respectively from conventional single-source tree heat-supply network,multi-source heat-supply network and loop heat-supply network is presented.The application conditions of distributed circulating pump heat-supply system and the influence of network structure on the energy saving rate are analyzed.The feasibility of reconstructing a multi-source loop heat-supply network into a distributed circulating pump heat-supply system in near term and long term is analyzed combined with an engineering example.

Abstract:Apart from water quality, leakage control and energy consumption management are the most concerning challenges for water treatment plants (WTPs). The joint scheduling of pumps and pressure reducing valves (PRVs) in the water distribution network can reduce excessive pressure and distribute pressure more evenly, which achieves comprehensive reduction of leakages and energy consumption. Taking into account the main shortcomings of the commonly used methods, such as scheduling pumps or PRVs separately, or optimizing PRV settings when their position is given, etc., this paper has taken the PRV (position and setting) and the working status of variable speed pumps (VSPs) as decision variables and the cost savings contributed by leakage reduction and energy consumption savings as the objective function, which maximized the economic benefits brought by PRV and/or VSP scheduling. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used to optimize the solution under multiple working conditions. The performance of three control strategies (PRV-only scheduling, VSP-only scheduling, and joint scheduling of PRVs and VSPs) are compared to each other based on a small network. Joint scheduling has achieved the best economic benefits in reducing the gross cost (contributed by leakage and energy consumption) of the three control strategies, which results in a leakage reduction of 33.4%, an energy consumption reduction of 25.4%, and a total cost reduction of 33.1%, when compared to the original network, and saving about 1148 m(3) water (7% of the original consumption) and 722 kWh electric energy (25.4% of the original consumption) per day.

Abstract:This paper is aimed at the realization method and control logic of variable-pressure and energy-saving water supply strategy for parallel pumps by theoretical and experimental research. The PLC, combined with frequency converters, has been used as control-system of the new control strategy. In addition, the intelligent variable-pressure control was realized by modeling water demand estimation for piping system, variable-pressure control and the pump increased or decreased control, based on energy-efficiency condition. Suggested by the experiment results, the water demand estimation model is reliable with high sensibility and accuracy up to 90%. Besides, the control effect and energy-efficiency of pumps are improved effectively owing to the optimization control strategy. The obtained results can be referred by both the energy-saving optimization of parallel pumping system and the development of variable-pressure water supply mode.

Abstract:Presents the measurement results of distribution energy efficiency of thirteen centralized heat pump heating systems in a city in cold zone of China.Compares the rated energy efficiency ratios of distribution systems of these projects with measured ones.Analyses the energy consumption percentage of main chillers,heat source water distribution system and hot water distribution system.Summarizes the typical problems resulting in higher energy consumption of distribution system including large flow rate and small temperature difference,low operational efficiency of pumps and large pipeline resistance.Puts forward some suggestions to improve the distribution energy efficiency of centralized heat pump heating systems.
Energy Saving Design and Operational Optimization of Centrifugal Pump Network: A Review

Abstract:Design and operational optimization problems of centrifugal pump network with pumps coupled in series and/or parallel are discussed. Related research framework is categorized into three parts (objective function, constraints and algorithm) according to the procedures of modeling and optimization problem solving. Contents of objective function depend on commercial domain background, and equality and inequality constraints can be grouped following modularizing design principle for single pump, pump coupled in series and/or parallel and design and operation of pump network. Moreover, contents of algorithm used in optimization problems can be classified into two parts depending on the convexity of Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP). Recent research on five aspects i.e. construction of objective function, equation oriented pump characteristics, design and operational optimization problems, and corresponding algorithm of MINLP are reviewed. The decomposition of objective function by life cycle cost analysis shows that the proportion of energy consumption and maintenance costs are increasing. Performance equations are interpolated from pump curves provided by pump manufacturer. The challenges come from lack of flowrate measurement and effects of pipe resistance on pumps. Research on design optimization now focuses on super-structure of industrial pump network and extends gradually to simultaneous optimization of all networks. Operational optimization focuses on the control of load shifting and pump scheduling. The discussion of algorithm remains in the category of deterministic and heuristic algorithm of MINLP. Finally, a prospect for future research on centrifugal pump network is proposed. Intelligent equipment monitoring, maintenance scheduling and facility management together with flexible design of pump network towards time-space dimensional distribution are discussed as future research areas.

Abstract:Presents the field measurement results of the operational performance of water distribution networks in eight heat pump systems for centralized space heating in cold regions of North China.The results show that heat consumption amount during the heating season generally exceeds the reasonable demand.A thorough measurement and analysis shows that the main causes of the higher heating consumption are heat distribution loss,hydraulic imbalance and building envelope heat loss,and the first two causes are common in the centralized space heating systems and hard to be solved.Suggests to adopt a distributed space heating system using heat pump as the heat source.

Abstract:This study analyzed the current electricity consumption of heating exchanging stations in China. By testing the pressure drop of each opponent and the operating condition of pumps, the conclusion was that the largest amount of potential energy saving was inside of stations. The improper selection of pumps, heat exchangers, and pipes was the important reason to cause extra energy loss.

Abstract:Presents the on-site measurement results of the operational energy performance of twentytwo heat pumps in fifteen centralized space heating systems in a city of northern China,including geothermal heat pump systems,sewage-source heat pump systems and seawater-source heat pump systems.The results show that the measured operational heating coefficients of performance are lower than the rated values for most heat pump units.Summarizes the typical problems existing in actual operation of heat pump units including low heat transfer performance by scaling of heat exchanger,low load ratio of heat pump units and super-high supply water temperature of end-user side.

Abstract:Abstract The circulating cooling water system (CCWS) is a common industrial auxiliary system, and water pumps need to consume much energy to transport cooling water to distributed heat exchangers. Previous studies show that a pump network configuration with constant speed auxiliary pump plus hydro turbine (CSAP-T) plays a significant role in energy conservation. However, given the fluctuations in the production load and cooling water supply temperature, the flow demand of heat exchangers for cooling water varies. Under different working conditions, the CSAP-T scheme cannot supply the minimum cooling water flow required by all heat exchangers at the same time, thereby wasting energy. Therefore, this paper proposes a new fluid machinery network configuration called variable speed auxiliary pump plus hydro turbine (VSAP-T) and establishes a mathematical model of the total output power of the fluid machinery network in CCWS to minimize network energy consumption. To illustrate the effectiveness of the VSAP-T scheme, a real system is used as the research object, and both CSAP-T and VSAP-T schemes are used to optimize the system. When the working conditions are changed, the total output power of the system fluid machinery network can be conserved by 30% to 50%.

Abstract:In recent years, the application of hydraulic pumping unit in energy saving and consumption reduction shows many advantages and development potential. It is very important to adopt appropriate methods to save energy for hydraulic pumping unit. So far, the research work in this field has been reported in many articles, but they are scattered, and there is no summary of the energy-saving technology and method of hydraulic pumping unit. It is necessary to summarize the latest development of this energy-saving technology. In this article, the energy-saving technology of hydraulic pumping unit is comprehensively reviewed, aiming to clarify the latest progress of energy-saving technology and summarize the potential challenges in the research and application of energy-saving technology. At the same time, this article mainly summarizes the main energy-saving principles and energy-saving technologies in hydraulic pumping units, as well as the application of simulation software in the digital model of hydraulic pumping units. By combing the development and improvement of hydraulic pumping unit, the blank field and future research direction are put forward, which provides reference for technicians and researchers in related industries to develop new energy-saving technologies of hydraulic system.

Abstract:Since the concept of reliability was put forward, how to improve the reliability of district heating system to effectively save energy and ensure economic benefits has become a research hotspot. By analyzing the hydraulic performance of district heating network and the possible flow in each pipe under normal and failure scenarios, we proposed the standby hydraulic design framework. Then, the topology and standby hydraulic design mathematical models of typical single-heat-source single-looped district heating network were established. The variation of hydraulic performance was studied by changing the determination method of design flow, the number, and distribution of users on the mainline. Finally, several design rules which can effectively alleviate the hydraulic imbalance under failure scenarios were proposed. The results show that using the method of weighted summation of the possible flow and its probability in each pipe under various operation scenarios to design pipe diameter has the advantages of high hydraulic performance without greatly increasing investment.
