Abstract:For the excellent complex and recognition function,cyclodextrins have attracted wide research interest. In order to utilize these special properties of cyclodextrins more effectively, immobilization of cyclodextrins,with specific orientation,upon solid substrate is necessary in many potential applications. This paper summarizes the common methods to prepare monolayer/multilayers of cyclodextrins on solid substrate,including the Langmuir-Blodgett method,Layer-by-Layer technique,and chemical adsorption. These methods are compared and evaluated. The application situation of these systems is introduced. Finally,based on preparations and applications,the future research directions of cyclodextrins monolayer/multilayers membranes are discussed. Improving routine methods and developing simpler methods will be the key research of this area in the future.

Abstract:We synthesized a duplex cyclodextrin with two aliphatic links and functionalized with eight pentyl ethers orientated towards the centre of the duplex. We found that this molecule self-assembled in water to form stable vesicles with a diameter within the range 1–10μm.

Abstract:The recent progress in "supramolecular cyclodextrin amphiphile" is reviewed in this manuscript. The supramolecular cyclodextrin amphiphiles have three main types: the first class containing the cyclodextrins with hydrophobic modifications, the second class containing the inclusion complexes between cyclodextrins and amphiphiles, and the third class containing inclusion complexes between cyclodextrins and hydrophobic guests. The investigations on supramolecular cyclodextrin amphiphiles and their self-assemblies not only expand the concept of supramolecular chemistry" introduced by Lehn, the Nobel Prize winner in chemistry in 1987, but also have the potential applications to bio-mimicry,, smart materials and controllable therapeutic drug delivery and release systems.

Abstract:Supramolccular self-assembled functional materials comprised of cyclic dipeptide building blocks have excellent prospects for biotechnology applications due to their exceptional structural rigidity, morphological flexibility, ease of preparation and modification. Although the pharmacological uses of many natural cyclic dipeptides have been studied in detail, relatively little is reported on the engineering of these supramolecular architectures for the fabrication of functional materials. In this review, we discuss the progress in the design, synthesis, and characterization of cyclic dipeptide supramolecular nanomaterials over the past few decades, highlighting applications in biotechnology and optoelectronics engineering.

Abstract:The excellent biocompatibility and unique inclusion capability as well as powerful functionalization capacity of cyclodextrins and their derivatives make them especially attractive for engineering novel functional materials for biomedical applications. There has been increasing interest recently to fabricate supramolecular systems for drug and gene delivery based on cyclodextrin materials. This review focuses on state of the art and recent advances in the construction of cyclodextrin-based assemblies and their applications for controlled drug delivery. First, we introduce cyclodextrin materials utilized for self-assembly. The fabrication technologies of supramolecular systems including nanoplatforms and hydrogels as well as their applications in nanomedicine and pharmaceutical sciences are then highlighted. At the end, the future directions of this field are discussed.

Abstract:<p>Cyclodextrin-based polymers (CDPs) are amphiphilic macromolecules owing to their unique structure and the presence of multiple hydroxyl groups. These polymers have become increasingly popular in applications ranging from biomedicine to environmental science. In this review, four types of CDPs are distinguished based on their structural characteristics: cyclodextrin-based polyrotaxanes, grafted cyclodextrin polymers, cross-linked cyclodextrin polymers, and cyclodextrin-originated star/multi-arm polymers. The discussion includes the syntheses and properties of several derivatives of CDPs. In addition to low toxicity, good bioavailability and biodegradability, and the feasibility of inclusion complexation and chemical modification of cyclodextrins, these polymers have prominent advantages, such as stimuli responsiveness and the ability to form well-defined aggregated nanostructures, which make them promising candidates for applications related to controlled and targeted drug delivery. In this review, we have highlighted the evolution, unique types, and properties of various CDPs, which are core aspects that differ from previously published reviews. Additionally, the synergistic effect of cyclodextrin and cross-linking monomers, as well as their use as drug carriers over the past decade, have been emphasized.</p>

Abstract:Supramolecular nanostructures assembled by polymeric amphiphiles have been intensively studied during the last two decades. Such nanocarriers may be engineered to possess on-demand bio-responsitivity for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human diseases. The successful development of several nanoassembly-based polymer therapeutics further encouraged scientists to develop nano-vehicles to achieve controlled release, enhanced efficacy, improved specificity and reduced toxicity. Different from the abundant existing literatures on the hydrophobically or electrostatically driven self-assemblies and their therapeutic applications, this article reviews host-guest interaction mediated nanoassemblies, especially those constructed using cyclodextrins as the host entities. The excellent biocompatibility, complexation capacity, and chemical-sensitivity of cyclodextrin make cyclodextrin-containing polymers attractive to construct host-guest nanoassemblies. Such nanocarriers may be advantageous also because of the broad availability of cyclodextrins, their flexibility for structure/property modulation and their chemical-responsive characteristics.

Abstract:Cyclodextrins (CDs) had been regarded as destructors in molecular assembly systems for a long time until CD/surfactants were found to assemble into high order structure driven by hydrogen bonding between CDs. Thereafter, intensive researches have been conducted on construction and regulation of CD–amphiphile systems. Here, we summarized the recent progress on construction and regulation of CDs and amphiphiles assembly. The scope of amphiphiles have been extended from surfactants (ionic surfactants, zwitterion surfactants, nonionic surfactants, gemini surfactant, and so on), to nontypical amphiphiles (amines, aromatic molecules, alkanes, and so on). Owing to the abundant choices of guest amphiphiles and dynamic nature of host–guest inclusive interaction, numerous regulation methods (such as enzyme, light, pH, concentration, temperature, and so on) have been used in CD–amphiphile systems. Moreover, remarks and future perspectives are also discussed at the end of this review, which is expected to stimulate progress on both mechanism and application level.

Abstract:Many kinds of modified cyclodextrins (CDs) bearing the functions such as catalytic activity, membrane permeability and molecular recognition sensor, have been synthesized and investigated. In order to further realize a supramolecular recognition system and develop new functional mateials based on cyclodxtrins and amino acids or peptides, we have designed and synthesized a series of CD-amino acid conjugates and investigated their affinity towards small peptide molecules. This paper summarized recent progresses on the synthesis and molecular recognition of amino acid- or peptide-cyclodextrin conjugates and discussed the inclusion behaviour or self-assembly of cyclodextrins and their derivatives with some guests such as amino acids or peptides.

Abstract:Natural cyclodextrins (CDs) and their derivatives are host molecules that form inclusion complexes with hydrophobic drugs and are widely applied as pharmaceutical additives and DDS carriers in the pharmaceutical field. Recently, supramolecular necklaces using CDs have also been attracting attention, and their functions have been found to be superior to those of conventional low-molecular-weight or high-molecular-weight drug formulation materials. In addition, a paradigm shift is taking place in which CDs themselves are being used as active pharmaceutical ingredients. This paper reviews the creation of CD-based materials and their application to pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:In this paper, the structure and properties of cyclodextrins (CDs) with hydrophilic external and hydrophobic internal cavities are presented. For the special molecular structure of CDs, the characteristics and performances of membranes will be improved by introducing CDs and their derivatives into the membrane. The preparation methods and applications of membranes with CDs are reviewed, including separation of isomers, transfer of metal ions, controlled release of drugs, drug detection and analysis, hydrolyzation of esters etc. The study on molecular conduit of CDs is summarized. Based on these reviews, the prospect of membrane with CDs is discussed.

Abstract:<p>This Review is an overview of the unique characteristics of cyclodextrin in forming an inclusion complex via host–guest noncovalent interactions. The modification of cyclodextrin advances its application as a pharmaceutical solubilizer, fabrication of functional molecular machines such as polyrotaxane, polypseudorotaxane, and polycatenanes and grafting of cyclodextrin with different linear, branched chain polymers. The different stimuli‐based supramolecular assemblies involving cyclodextrin as a key mediator with linked triggering responses on payload release is highlighted. In addition, the applications of cyclodextrin in diagnostic imaging and medical devices is briefly demonstrated. Cyclodextrin is a relatively low cost, biocompatible, biodegradable, and highly explored material with low toxicity for drug formulation, drug delivery, and wide varieties of other biomedical applications such as those in medical devices fabrication, biosensor, tissue engineering, and bio‐imaging. The toxicological profile of cyclodextrin is well established and safe for human consumption in food and medicine.</p>

Abstract:Cyclodextrins (CDs) are widely used macrocycles in supramolecular assembly due to their easy availability, versatile functionality and excellent biocompatibility. Although they are well-known for forming host-guest complexes with a wide range of guests and this host-guest chemistry has long been utilized in industry and academia, new opportunities have arisen in recent years, particularly in supramolecular assembly. In the present review, we will first provide a basic introduction to CDs and then summarize their emerging roles in the fields of supramolecular chemistry and materials. This includes their involvement in hybrid frameworks with inorganic components such as metal ions and polyoxometalates, crystalline self-assembly with amphiphilic molecules, and their new possibility of "catassembly" and induced chiral supramolecular structures that have previously been overlooked. Finally, we will comment on the future perspectives of CDs to inspire more ideas and efforts, with the aim of promoting diverse applications of CDs in supramolecular materials.

Abstract:As a class of macrocyclic host with excellent water solubility, low biotoxicity and high charge density, multi-charged cyclodextrins have been extensively studied because they can interact with organic/inorganic/biological molecules through multiple synergistic forces such as the hydrophobic cavities and electrostatic interactions to construct the smart supramolecular assemblies with stable topology, functional diversity and stimulus responsiveness. The latest research progress of pH-, photo-, enzyme-, redox-, magnetic- and multi-stimulus responsive smart supramolecular assemblies, which are constructed by typical positively/negatively charged and amphiphilic multi-charged cyclodextrins including their application in the fields of drug delivery, controlled release and sensory detection is introduced, and the challenges and future developments of multi-charged cyclodextrin smart supramolecular assemblies are discussed.
