Abstract:Odor emissions from intensive livestock and poultry farming operations pose significant environmental and health concerns. Photocatalysis, an advanced oxidation process (AOP), has shown great promise for mitigating odorous gasses in livestock and poultry farming due to its efficiency, environmental friendliness, and mild operating conditions. This review summarizes the principles and performance of photocatalytic deodorization in livestock and poultry farming and evaluates the advancements in photocatalytic deodorization from lab- to field-scale. Photocatalytic systems demonstrate removal efficiencies of up to 98% for ammonia (NH3), 89.9% for hydrogen sulfide (H2S), 99% for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and 17.2% for particulate matter (PM). However, reduced efficacy occurs in practical applications due to humidity, dust, and pollutant complexity. Key knowledge gaps, such as insufficient field-scale experiments and limited studies on complex pollutants, hinder further improvements in photocatalytic deodorization. Therefore, this review highlights strategies to enhance photocatalytic systems under farming conditions, including an improved photocatalyst design, reactor optimization, and combined technologies. By bridging the gap between lab-scale studies and field-scale applications, this work provides a foundation for developing sustainable and effective odor control solutions for livestock and poultry farming.

Screening and application effect of microbial strains for duck manure fermentation

Abstract:Eight deodorizing strains and two fecal thermophilic strains were isolated from fresh duck feces samples. Among the 8 deodorizing strains, 3 strains with good deodorizing effect were selected and combined with 2 strains with high temperature, which were used to prepare compound microbial inoculum, and the composting effect was tested. In the composting experiment, natural composting was set as control, and there were two treatments with compound microbial inoculum. The duck manure was fermented and stacked. The results showed that the microbial inoculum treatment could obviously promote the temperature rise of duck manure fermentation, and the high temperature stage lasted for a long time. The C/N value of microbial inoculum treatment was 2.6 lower than that of natural stacking control, and the degree of maturity was higher. Compared with the control, the germination index reached the harmless standard five days earlier, the total nitrogen content increased by 4.08% compared with the natural composting, and the loss rate of nitrogen nutrient content was the lowest. Therefore, the strain composed of microbial inoculum 2 has certain application value in the treatment of duck manure waste.

Abstract:Abstract With the development of urbanization, industry, agriculture and aquaculture, malodorous pollution has become increasingly serious. Odour pollutants can be produced by non-biological or biological pathways, which not only have a great negative impact on the regional ecological environment, but also cause great harm to the health of local people and animals. Compared with physical method, chemical method and adsorption method, biological deodorization method has the characteristics of high odour removal rate, environmental friendliness and low cost. Biological method is gradually becoming the preferred technique for odour removal in some odour producing areas. In this paper, the mechanism, the patent application status and the application prospect of biological deodorization are summarized and analysed, so that we can have a deeper understanding of biological deodorization.

Abstract:Human living environments and health are seriously affected by the odor produced from fermentation of livestock and poultry manure. In order to reduce the odor pollution caused by livestock and poultry manure, efficient strains were screened and two methods were tried in this study. The orthogonal test design was used to analyze the gas produced by pig manure under different conditions of temperature, time, wheat straw doping amount and calcium carbonate doping amount. Then, according to ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and comprehensive odor removal effects, the high efficiency of deodorizing strains were screened. The results showed that pig manure produced the least odor when the temperature was 20 °C, added 0% calcium carbonate, 20% wheat straw and waited for 48 h. Three strains were screened to inhibit the odor production of pig manure: Paracoccus denitrificans, Bacillus licheniformis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, showed that their highest removal rate of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gas could reach 96.58% and 99.74% among them; while for three strains of end-control pig manure stench: Pichia kudriavzevii, P. denitrificans and Bacillus subtilis, the highest removal rate of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide gas reached 85.91% and 90.80% among them. This research provides bacteria resources as the high-efficiency deodorizing function for the source suppression and the end treatment of the odor gas of pig manure, which has high application value for the control of odor pollution.

Abstract:<p>Odor emissions from intensive livestock farms have attracted increased attention due to their adverse impacts on the environment and human health. Nevertheless, a systematic summary regarding the characteristics, sampling detection, and control technology for odor emissions from livestock farms is currently lacking. This paper compares the development of odor standards in different countries and summarizes the odor emission characteristics of livestock farms. Ammonia, the most common odor substance, can reach as high as 4100 ppm in the compost area. Sampling methods for point and area source odor emissions are introduced in this paper, and odor analysis methods are compared. Olfactometers, odorometers, and the triangle odor bag method are usually used to measure odor concentration. Odor control technologies are divided into three categories: physical (activated carbon adsorption, masking, and dilution diffusion), chemical (plant extract spraying, wet scrubbing, combustion, non-thermal plasma, and photocatalytic oxidation), and biological (biofiltration, biotrickling, and bioscrubbing). Each technology is elucidated, and the performance in the removal of different pollutants is summarized. The application scopes, costs, operational stability, and secondary pollution of the technologies are compared. The generation of secondary pollution and long-term operation stability are issues that should be considered in future technological development. Lastly, a case analysis for engineering application is conducted.</p>

Abstract:The disposal of animal remains resulting from breeding is a significant challenge that impacts the industry's growth. To address the issues with current treatment methods, such as the large space required for corpse storage, and the high energy consumption of pyrolysis. Three strains with high protease and lipase production and one strain with high keratinase production were screened. The virulence genes were evaluated, the synthesis gene clusters of degrading enzymes were mined, secondary metabolites of each strain were analyzed, and the bacterial community with both growth rate and enzyme production ability was developed. Therefore, a microbial degradation method with mild reaction conditions and rapid liquefaction of animal residues was developed. The liquid degradation of four common farm-raised animal residues (sheep, cattle, chickens, and pigs) was tested under laboratory conditions. The results showed that the liquid degradation of animal residues was achieved within 144 h, transforming the months-long anaerobic process of traditional compost fermentation process into a mere 6 days' anaerobic process. N, P, K plant nutrients accounted for 15% of the total matrix, pH value was 5.5-6.7, heavy metal content was less than 0.2 mg L-1. Designed and improved fermentation equipment, produced a 3 m³ fermentation equipment, used in chicken, pig two types of animal residues pilot test. The emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO2 in the entire degradation process were 1.6 × 104 ppm, which was 481 times less than that of composting by 7.7 × 106. This study provides a solution for the treatment of dead livestock and poultry, which has promotional and practical value.

Abstract:With the intensive development of large-scale livestock industry, the gas emissions from livestock farms were identified as a major problem. Many greenhouse gases and odorous gases are generated from animal exhalation, ruminant fermentation, livestock waste, and other factors. Considering the environmental impact brought by pollutant gas emissions, it is important to determine how it contributes to total emissions accurately in order to minimize it. This article gives a comprehensive overview over the non-spectroscopic techniques and spectroscopic techniques applied to air quality assessment in livestock. In addition, this review summarizes interferences in the detection process, emphasizing different interference reduction approaches for improving the performance of current detection technologies used in livestock farms.

Abstract:Poultry farms are a complex environment for close contact between humans and animals. Accumulating evidence has indicated that pathogens and drug resistance genes in chicken houses may pose a serious threat to public health and economic concerns. However, insufficient knowledge of the indoor aerosol microbiome and resistome profiles of layer hen houses hampers the understanding of their health effects. Environmental surveillance of antibiotic resistance may contribute to a better understanding and management of the human exposure risk of bioaerosols under the environmental conditions of chicken houses. In addition, the chicken house has a long operation cycle, and the bacterial diversity and antibiotic resistance genes of aerosols in different periods may be different. In this study, air samples were collected from 18 chicken houses on three farms, including the early laying period (EL), peak laying period (PL), and late laying period (LL). 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomics were used to study the composition of the bacteria and resistome in aerosols of layer hen houses and the results showed that they varied with laying period. The highest alpha diversity of bacteria was observed in PL bioaerosols. The dominant bacterial phyla included Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria. Three potential pathogenic bacterial genera ( Bacteroides , Corynebacterium and Fusobacterium ) were found. The most abundant ARG type was aminoglycosides in all laying periods. In total, 22 possible ARG host genera were detected. ARG subtypes and abundance were both higher in LL. Network analysis also showed higher co-occurrence patterns between the bacteria and resistome in bioaerosols. The laying period plays an important role in the bacterial community and resistome in layer house aerosols.

Abstract:Odor emission seriously affects human and animal health, and the ecological environment. Nevertheless, a systematic summary regarding the control technology for odor emissions in livestock breeding is currently lacking. This paper summarizes odor control technology, highlighting its applicability, advantages, and limitations, which can be used to evaluate and identify the most appropriate methods in livestock production management. Odor control technologies are divided into four categories: dietary manipulation (low-crude protein diet and enzyme additives in feed), in-housing management (separation of urine from feces, adsorbents used as litter additive, and indoor environment/manure surface spraying agent), manure management (semi-permeable membrane-covered, reactor composting, slurry cover, and slurry acidification), and end-of-pipe measures for air treatment (wet scrubbing of the exhaust air from animal houses and biofiltration of the exhaust air from animal houses or composting). Findings of this paper provide a theoretical basis for the application of odor control technology in livestock farms.
[Air Microbial Contamination and Risk of Respiratory Exposure of Workers in Chicken Farms]

Abstract:Animal farms are important sources of microbial contamination in the air environment. However, there are few reports on the time-regularity characteristics of airborne microbial contamination in farms. In the context of this situation, a study was conducted for more than 80 weeks using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to characterize the bacterial distribution and respiratory exposure in the farm air and fecal environment, respectively, taking a layer farm as an example. The results showed that 16S rRNA concentrations in air and manure samples ranged from 6.08×105-4.90×106 copies·m-3 and 4.27×108-1.15×1010 copies·g-1, respectively. The mean values of airborne bacterial concentrations were significantly higher in winter than in summer, whereas the biodiversity showed the opposite trend. The dominant bacterial phylum in both air and manure in the layer farm was Firmicutes. During the investigated time, the top three dominant genera in the air were relatively stable, in the order of Lactobacillus, Bacteroides, and Faecalibacterium, whereas the dominant genera in feces fluctuated with the increase in breeding time. The correlation between the community structure of bacteria and pathogenic bacteria in both air and manure was not significant, but the concentrations of both target microorganisms in different media were significantly correlated. The bioaerosolization index of bacteria in manure showed an increasing trend with increasing breeding time, whereas the opposite trend was observed for pathogenic bacteria. In this case, [Ruminococcus]_torques_group, Bacteroides, and Faecalibacterium were the top three pathogenic genera that were the most prone to aerosolization. There were seasonal differences in bacterial respiratory exposures of chicken farm workers, with mean intake values of 2.54×107 copies·d-1 and 2.87×105 copies·d-1 for bacteria and pathogenic bacteria, respectively. The results of this study will provide a scientific basis for systematically assessing the contamination characteristics and potential health risks of airborne microorganisms on farms and for developing corresponding industry standards for occupational exposure and prevention and control measures.
Microbial Screening for Reducing Ammonia Emission from Layers' Manure

Abstract:Reduction of ammonia,mainly odour from layers' production environment,can improve environmental quality,increase layers' production,and be benefit to flock health.To obtain microorganism with high efficiency of reducing ammonia emission,this study screened one strain bacterium named B3 with good efficiency by means of enriching.This strain could reduce ammonia emission from layers' manure by 32.22%.The effect of different time(1 to 7 d),volume(0,2.5,5.0,7.5 mL) of bacterial suspension,and moisture content(73.52%,78.52%,83.52%,88.52%) of layers' manure on ammonia emission,by means of that ammonia concentration in 2 000 mL flasks with bacterial suspension and fresh layers' manure were detected by ammonia detector tubes.The results showed that within 7 days,ammonia emission was reduced while moisture content of layers' manure was increased when addition of bacterial suspension was 0 mL,2.5 mL,5.0 mL,7.5 mL,respectively.Higher efficiency of reducing ammonia emission was obtained with bacterial suspension of 0 mL,2.5 mL,7.5 mL when moisture content of layers' manure was 78.52%,83.52% and 88.52%,respectively.These results indicated that within 7 days,ammonia emission was always reduced while moisture content of layers' manure was increased under the condition of the same addition of bacterial suspension.The efficiency of reducing ammonia emission was different among different additions of bacterial suspension,while moisture content of layers' manure was the same.The results also indicated that ammonia emissions was reduced when dosage of B3 strain and moisture content of manure was increased,in view of dual effects of both factors;the highest efficiency of B3 strain inhibiting ammonia emissions was 66.67% in the condition of 7.5 mL bacterial suspension and 88.52% moisture content of layers' manure within 7 days.
Odour reducing microbial-mineral additive for poultry manure treatment

Abstract:Poultry production systems are associated with emissions of odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), greenhouse gases, and particulate matter. Development of mitigation technologies for these emissions is important. Previous laboratory-scale research on microbial-mineral treatment has shown to be effective for mitigation of NH3, H2S and amines emissions from poultry manure. The aim of this research was to assess the effectiveness of surface application of a microbial-mineral treatment for other important odorants, i.e., phenolics and sulfur-containing VOCs. Microbial-mineral litter additive consisting of 20% (w/w) of bacteria powder (six strains of heterotrophic bacteria) and 80% of mineral carrier (perlite-bentonite) was used at a dose of 500 g∙m-2 (per ~31 kg of manure). Samples of air were collected in two series, 4 and 7 days after application of additives. An odor profile of the poultry manure was determined using simultaneous chemical and sensory analysis. Reduction levels of VOCs determined on Day 4 was between 31% and 83% for mineral adsorbent treatment and in the range of 9% and 96% for microbial-mineral additive, depending on the analyzed compound. Reduction levels on Day 7 were considerably lower than on Day 4, suggesting that the odorous VOCs treatment efficacy is relatively short. There was no significant difference between treatments consisting of microbial-mineral additive and mineral carrier alone.

Advances in methods and instruments for determining concentration of gaseous air pollutants in large-scaled livestock farms

Abstract:With the development of Chinese large-scale and intensive livestock production, the animal stocking density increases, resulting in a lot of pollutant gas emissions. They are not only the important sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) , nitrous oxide (N2O), but also the sources of nitrogen or sulfur organic odors such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), ammonia (NH3), mercaptan, phenol, paracresol, indole, skatole, which are produced by manure fermentation and decomposition. These gases contain large amounts of toxic and hazardous ingredients. If the concentration of pollution gas is small, the gas can be diluted by diffusion after emitting into the air. If the gas fails to be cleaned up or improperly handled, the odors will keep increasing and gather together. These gases will affect the growth of livestock and poultry, and they will cause environmental pollution, seriously affecting the air quality in urban and rural areas when these contaminated gases largely diffuse into the atmosphere. The environment could be deteriorating;the health of the feeders and residents also could be influenced. This paper reviewed the characteristics of several typical pollutant gases mainly including NH3, H2S, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other toxic and harmful gases. We also reviewed the research status of the pollution detection methods and analytical instruments at home and abroad for determining pollutant gas discharged from large-scale livestock and poultry breeding. Along with the development of computer technology, spectral analysis technology, sensor technology and wireless communication technology, there are more researchers applying the novel techniques on pollutant gas emissions from livestock farms in the domestic and foreign. This review synthesized the development of the methods and analyzers for the component and concentration detection of the gases emitted from livestock farms. According to the principal of the detection methods, the detection methods can be classified into optical methods and chemical methods. Optical methods can be divided into two types. One is the conventional optical method that determines the concentration of the pollution gas through measuring the light intensity change;the other is the spectral method that obtains the spectral information on the pollution gas using the spectrum analyzer. Chemical methods mainly include electrochemical method, chemiluminescence method, chromatography and mass spectrometry. In accordance with the measurement methods we summarized the type and origin of the instruments, the corresponding usage in the researches and the research findings using these instruments. In the end we compared the technical characteristics and application between internal and external situation. The goal of this review is for providing the basis to quick and accurate detection methods of the pollutant gases, which include the gases composition and concentration determination, and gives a reference for the development of pollution gas detection technology in livestock farming. To develop detection technology and integration system in situ, which can simultaneously detect all varieties of pollution gases emitted from livestock husbandry, will be the direction for the instrument and equipment development of livestock farm’s gas emission detection in future.
[Characterization of VOCs Emissions from Caged Broiler House in Winter]

Abstract:Volatile organic compound (VOCs) emissions from poultry and livestock facilities affect the surrounding environmental quality and human health. However, VOCs emissions from broiler houses have been less characterized, and studies of related dominant odorants, carcinogenic risk, and ozone formation potential are still lacking. To fill this research gap, VOCs pollutants emitted from a broiler house were investigated in this study. The VOCs emission characteristics of the broiler house during three different periods of broiler growth (early, middle, and later) were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that 77 types of VOCs were detected, including 16 types of halogenated hydrocarbons, 21 types of alkanes, 5 types of olefins, 12 types of aromatic hydrocarbons, 15 types of oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs), and 8 types of sulfides. During the entire 42-day growth period, the concentrations of halogenated hydrocarbons, alkanes, olefin, aromatic hydrocarbons, and OVOCs in the broiler house showed few changes. However, with the growth of broilers, the intake of sulfur-containing amino acids and the fecal emission coefficient increased, resulting in the gradual conversion of the VOCs to sulfide. Therefore, emissions of sulfur-containing VOCs increased in the early and middle growth periods. Moreover, the increase in ventilation in the house during the later growth period resulted in a decrease in the sulfur-containing VOCs concentrations. The dominant odorants in the broiler house were naphthalene, ethyl acetate, acetaldehyde, carbon disulfide, dimethyl disulfide, methanethiol, methanethiol, and thiophene. Methanethiol had the highest odorous values, ranging from 2172.4 to 19090.9. Meanwhile, there were acceptable levels of carcinogenic risk in the early and middle growth periods, with a lifetime cancer risk (LCR) of 7.7×10-6 and 4.5×10-6, respectively. The average ozone formation potential (OFP) was (1458.9±787.4) μg·m-3. The results of this study can provide a scientific basis for the monitoring of malodorous substances and formulation of emission reduction strategies in broiler production.

Abstract:Pre-cooling and bacteria-reducing was an important processing point to control quality and microorganisms in the process of broilers slaughtering processing.The broilers pre-cooling and bacteria-reducing were conducted, the center temperature was decreased, the microorganism growth was inhibited and the good quality of chicken was kept.Pre-cooling modes were broadly divided into immersed cooling (water cooling), air cooling, spray cooling, vacuum cooling and mixing cooling.Disinfectant which used in the process of broilers slaughtering had sterilization agents with chlorine class, organic acids class, peroxides class and so on.Sodium hypochlorite had the risk of carcinogenesis was suspected by the European Union, and it was banned directly to contact with food.Organic acids class and peroxides class fungicide had significant sterilization effect and higher safety.It was summarized that pre-cooling methods which was studied more in recent years at home and aboard, and 4 kinds of disinfectants including sodium hypochlorite, lactic acid, acetic acid and peracetic acid were briefly introduced.
Popularization and Application of Probiotics Preparations in the Production of Laying Breeder Hens

Abstract:The demonstration,popularization and application works of probiotics preparation in the production of laying breeder hens was done,in order to promote the wide application of probiotics preparation in the production of laying breeder hens,ensure the green and safe production of breeder poultry in suburbs of Beijing and increase the economic and social benefits.The popularization results showed that adding probiotics preparation to feed can increase the laying rate of laying hens and the qualified rate of breeding eggs,decrease the feed conversion and the rate of dead bird,improve the fertilization rate of hatching eggs,the hatchability of fertile eggs and the rate of healthy chicken and decrease the rate between breeding eggs and female chickens.It has some economic benefits and it is a kind of green and safe production model,so it can be and popularized and used in laying breeder hens.

Abstract:From the ecological and economic point of view, intensive pig farming is drawing more and more attention due to the appearance of harmful substances, which significantly increases the risks of air, water and soil pollution. In addition, the optimal criteria for the content of harmful gases, dust and microorganisms in the environment of pig farms are currently not clearly defined. In order to better understand the interaction of harmful emissions and aerosols, the article reviews data from the literature on their main components, concentrations, and interactions. The results showed that the main pollutants in pig farming are harmful gases (ammonia (NH3), carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrogen oxide (N2O), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which are released from manure. The presence of even small concentrations of harmful gases in farm air can cause respiratory and cardiovascular system disorders not only in animals, but also in humans. Along with harmful gases, it is important to control the emission of solid particles and dust from livestock premises, which can form aerosols. Microbial aerosols in pig houses contain bacteria, fungi, viruses, which mainly come from the animals themselves, manure or service personnel. The bioaerosol includes the Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes bacterial divisions and their derivatives. In addition, the content of potentially dangerous bacteria in the bioaerosol can reach up to 40 %. A major concern causes the presence of a large number of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms in the air of these farms (including MRSA). The existing strategies and methods to combat these problems are still imperfect and need to be refined. Currently, the interaction of harmful gases, dust, solid particles and microorganisms is not taken into account, which can increase the toxic effect of each other on the animal's body. Therefore, there is a need for a better understanding of these interactions in order to improve the strategy for improving the microclimate conditions by correcting the microbiota, finding and developing biological preparations that contain natural bacteria capable of neutralizing odors and disinfecting livestock premises.
Effect of Different Disinfectants on Bacterial Aerosol Diversity in Poultry Houses

Abstract:To better understand the effect of different disinfectants on the types and quantities of microorganisms in a broiler chicken house, five different types of disinfectants, including ozone, available chlorine, quaternary ammonium salt, glutaraldehyde, and mixed disinfectant, were used. The broiler house microbial communities were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing combined with air sampling. The results showed that the concentrations of airborne aerobic bacteria in the empty broiler houses after application of different disinfectants were significantly reduced compared to a house untreated with disinfectant (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), and the number of inhalable particles of airborne aerobic bacteria sharply decreased after disinfection. Of the five disinfectants, the mixed disinfectant had the best disinfection efficacy on the total microbial communities (P < 0.05). A total of 508,143 high-quality sequences were obtained by high-throughput sequencing, which identified 1995 operational taxonomic units. In total, 42 phyla and 312 genera were identified. The structures of airborne microbial communities in the broiler houses after the different disinfectants were applied differed. In the house treated with the mixed disinfectant, the microbial communities containing opportunistic pathogens, such as Escherichia-Shigella, Bacillus, and Pseudomonas, had the lowest abundance, with a significant decrease compared to the house untreated with disinfectant. The alpha diversity index showed low diversity of the microbial communities in the house treated with mixed disinfectant. In contrast to the other four disinfectants, only a small amount of bacteria was detected in the air sample in the house treated with the mixed disinfectant; specifically, only four phyla were found (Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes). The mixed disinfectant produced a positive effect on disinfection for four phyla; however, it didn't thoroughly eliminate them. At genus level, Bacillus, Arenimonas, and Shinella could not be detected in the house treated with the mixed disinfectant, but were detected in houses treated with other disinfectants. The high-throughput sequencing results revealed that the combination of multiple disinfectants exhibited a good disinfection efficacy and that this technique could disinfect the air of broiler houses. These results will help guide the development of a reasonable program for broiler house disinfection.
