Abstract:To estimate the effects of microcrack interaction on the effectivemoduli of inhomogeneous solids, some approximate methods based on theconcept of effective medium (e.g., self-consistent method, generalizedself-consistent method and differential method) may be considered. However, these conventional schemes do not ensure a satisfactoryaccuracy of the results, at least in some cases, although cumbersomenumerical computations or theoretical derivations are often needed. Therefore, it is of importance to develop some methods appropriate forengineers who want to account for the effects of microcrack interactionin simpler ways. An effective medium method based on the Taylor model, which is also refered to the noninteractiong approximation, is suggestedto determine the effects of microcrack interaction on the overallconstitutive relations of brittle materials weakened by distributedmicrocracks. Each microcrack is assumed to be embedded in an effectivemedium with a compliance without accounting for interaction. Such ascheme has two advantages. First, it does not requires no numericaliteration to determine the effective moduli. Second, it can account forthe effects of microcrack interaction with better accuracy than theself-consistent method, which generally overestimates the effects ofmicrocrack interaction. This approximate scheme have been used toanalyze some important two- or three-dimensional, isotropic oranisotropic problems, and implemented into a three-dimentionalmicromechanical damage model based on the concept of domain ofmicrocrack growth. The discussion in this paper can be extended to otherheterogeneous materials, such as composites containing inclusions andsolids with frictionally sliding or fluid-saturated microcracks or withinclusions.
