Abstract:In view of the complex underwater acoustic channel in underwater acoustic communication system ,the paper proposed a new synchronized method to against extended frequency. The method makes full use of HFM (Hyperbolic Frequency Modulation, HFM) and doppler tolerance characteristics and constructs a special combination of HFM signals, so as to achieve rapid and precise time synchronization. Based on the sea channel data analysis, this method which compared with the traditional synchronization methods has a lower synchronous error and lower computational complexity and faster synchronous rate. The experimental results based on DSPs demonstrate the reliability and effectiveness.

Abstract:Underwater acoustic communication is one of the key technologies in various important research fields, such as ocean geography, offshore oil industry and defense. However, conventional system design can not achieve desirable results, since the underwater channel suffers a lot from multipath propagation and Doppler Effect. In this paper, we aim to introduce a type of coherent underwater acoustic communication system, which combine the joint synchronization and equalization scheme and the joint iterative equalization and decoding technique to combat the severe underwater environment mentioned above. The platform belongs to the physical layer and can take various high layer applications. The proposed system is tested in computer simulated scenarios and experimental data, both of which demonstrate good performance.
Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing Underwater Acoustic Communications with Time Reversal Processing

Abstract:In dispersive underwater channels where impulse responses commonly last tens of milliseconds, large symbol durations and guard intervals are needed for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) acoustic communications, which could introduce severe inter-carrier interferences and reduces effective data rate. This paper presents a scheme of OFDM transmission combined with passive time reversal processing, which has been demonstrated as a promising self-adaptive technique to compensate for multipath distortion explicitly due to its spatial focusing and temporal compressing characteristics. Using time reversal as a preprocessing step prior to OFDM, the equivalent channel impulse response is greatly shortened; moderate symbol durations and guard intervals can thus be used the same way as in conventional OFDM schemes. Moreover, to improve the robustness in harsh-environment applications, Reed Solomon channel coding is exploited for its good performance against burst errors caused by channel fading and ambient burst noise. Tradeoffs between data rate and robustness are discussed along with the transmission scheme. Abstract:This paper presents a scheme combing time reversal processing with concatenated Reed-Solomon channel coding for underwater acoustic communication. Time reversal processing is demonstrated as a means of refocusing signal that has been spread in time, which significantly mitigates the inter-symbol interferences inherent in multipath ocean environments. Reed-Solomon code performs well against burst errors caused by channel fading and burst noise that may occur during the course of communication. Using concatenated coding technique instead of a single coding can lower the coding complexity. The results of numerical simulation and field experiments show the proposed scheme can improve the quality of communication markedly in a complex underwater acoustic channel.

Abstract:A scheme of demodulation based on wavelet analysis for underwater acoustic signal is presented in this paper. The demodulation applied on the signals modulated by FSK modulation or PSK modulation is analyzed in theory. The idea is to use wavelet transform to locate the jump points when phase changes or frequency changes. This method has a better performance for PSK signals than for PSK signals. The reliability and performance of the proposed method are verified by Matlab simulation.

Through this system, multiple underwater vehicles can communicate with the console on the water surface simultaneously successfully. The communication system is composed of channel encoding and decoding, spread spectrum modulation and demodulation, RF (Radio Frequency) modulation, Rake Receiver and synchronization. As an important factor that affects the quality of acoustic communication, underwater acoustic channel is also taken into account. The simulation results indicate that it is feasible to use this system to accomplish underwater communication reliably due to the small BER (Bit Error Ratio).

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that synchronized correlation of linear frequency synchronization of m sequence possesses self noise and there are strong side lobes in a code range besides main lobe, in this paper we propose a new underwater acoustic synchronization scheme based on binary offset carrier (BOC) modulated signal with no interference windows which employs the property that the sum of aperiodic auto correlation function is 0 to realize no interference window between the range of one code and zero inference window and utilizes BOC (1, 1) to modulate signal with sub-carrier to mitigate side lobes in one code range besides main lobe. The schemes are designed for both single and couple channel signal, and the validity of underwater acoustic synchronization, channel measurement and estimation are testified through simulation and experiments.

Abstract:Underwater acoustic channels are unstable and acoustic waves when propagating in the ocean are subjected to variety of interference, such as noise, reflections, scattering and so on. To cope with this severe interference, spread spectrum communication technology is used. The traditional spread spectrum communication technology can communicate reliably in a lower signal-to-noise ratio environment, but at the cost of lower data rate. This paper thus proposes an underwater acoustic spread spectrum communication technology, which combines direct sequence spread spectrum and cyclic shift keying modulation to improve the data rate. Besides, a time-frequency two-dimensional search algorithm is used to realize the synchronization of this system. In order to reduce the bit error rate, the hybrid system is improved by adjusting power allocation of the transmitted signal. The performance of the proposed system is analyzed by the simulation and is verified by the experiment.

Abstract:Acoustic orbital angular momentum (OAM) wave has orthogonality between different modes, which can be utilized as a new multiplexing dimension to increase channel capacity of underwater acoustic communication systems. Combining OAM with other multiplexing techniques in different dimensions can further improve the data rate. In this paper, we propose a system integrating the acoustic OAM modes, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and index modulation (IM) to achieve high-speed underwater acoustic communication. The OAM-OFDM-IM communication system is established and its performance is simulated. The analysis of technical indicators verifies that the system's data transmission rate is significantly improved and its bit error rate performance enhances at high signal-to-noise ratio.
Synchronization and Doppler scale estimation with dual PN padding TDS-OFDM for underwater acoustic communication

Abstract:We propose a joint synchronization and Doppler scale estimation method with time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) for underwater acoustic communication. Dual frequency-domain pseudo-random noise (PN) sequences serve as training sequences for synchronization and channel estimation. Frame synchronization, carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation and Doppler scale estimation are obtained simultaneously by two-dimensional auto-correlations of received signals. Theoretical analyses and computer simulations show that the proposed method is suitable for synchronization and Doppler scale estimation, even in the presence of long delay spread and significant Doppler effects.

Abstract:A time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) scheme with dual Pseudonoise (PN) sequence is proposed for underwater acoustic (UWA) communication. Instead of using cyclic prefix (CP) or zero padding (ZP) as the guard interval, the proposed TDS-OFDM scheme uses two identical PN sequences as guard interval, and utilizes them for frame synchronization and channel estimation. The proposed TDS-OFDM increases the spectrum efficiency over the conventional CP or ZP OFDM systems where additional pilots have to be inserted for channel estimation. With the dual PN at each frame header, compressed sensing channel estimation is adopted and a rather simple equalization design reduces the receiver complexity. With a low-density parity-check (LDPC) code, the proposed system is simulated in doubly selective underwater acoustic channels with long multipath delay spread and severe Doppler spread. The results show that the TDS-OFDM achieves slightly better BER performance and higher spectrum efficiency than the conventional ZP-OFDM.

Abstract:Long-range shallow water channels are characterized by severe channel fading and low available signal to noise ratio (SNR). In classical underwater acoustic communication systems for above channels, incoherent MFSK modulation, or coherent modulation based on spatial diversity and adaptive equalizations are employed. Although being robustness to fading channels, the incoherent modulation can't solve efficiently the conflict demands between the high signaling rate and reliability. Large receiver arrays may be restricted to be used for some size limited receiver platforms. A novel multi-frequency NDPSK (MFSK-NDPSK) modulation approach for long-range underwater acoustic communications is presented in this paper which is well suited in shallow water channels. The proposed approach is an efficient combination of MFSK and NDPSK modulation. Signals are NDPSK modulated with multi-carrier frequencies, and the carrier frequencies of adjacent symbols are located in different subbands. Information is transmitted by both frequencies and phases of signals. The theoretical analysis and simulation results are given, and also the experiments in lake was conducted. The results demonstrate that compared with single-carrier modulation, the MFSK-NDPSK modulation can increase data rate in same communication range, or increase the communication range while keeping the same data rate due to input SNR can be increased to improve the performance of decreasing inter-symbol interference and increasing reliability of communication systems.

Abstract:Direct-sequence spread-spectrum-based approaches have been adopted in underwater acoustic communications. In this paper, multiple sequences utilizing the periodic correlation characteristics of an original spreading waveform are superimposed, modulating multiple distinct symbols simultaneously within each block at the transmitter. Among those superimposed symbols, one is used as the pilot for channel estimation on chip level and others carry data. Similar to existing superposition schemes, the proposed approach also has low receiver complexity, only requiring matched filtering operations. However, the innovation of the proposed approach is perfect interference suppression, cyclic prefix (CP) is inserted to eliminate the interblock interference totally. Combined CP operation leading to an equivalent cyclic channel matrix with circularly shifted versions of spreading sequences, interferences can be solved considerably. The proposed technique is evaluated with both simulation and experimental data analysis. Data processing gives a brief discussion about low probability of detection and low probability of interception.

Abstract:In underwater acoustic communications (UACs), the Doppler effect with fast time-varying motion platforms is usually coarsely estimated using the synchronization signal. Furthermore, the residual Doppler is compensated by an adaptive equalizer embedded phase-locked loop, resulting in the equalizer must rapidly update to address the timing offset. To alleviate the burden of the equalizer, an integrated receiver with a phase-and-timing-locked loop based on backward Wiener smoothing filtering and Farrow structure (BS-PTLL) is proposed in decision-directed mode, which employs an adaptive channel-estimation-based equalizer. The BS-PTLL tracks the phase offset between the received sequence and the local reconstruction sequence and compensates for the timing offset. Moreover, the high-code-rate trellis-coded modulation is adopted to achieve high spectral efficiency, and the low-latency protected symbols are used for sequence reconstruction. Simulations reveal that the BS-PTLL has advantages in various time-varying channels. The proposed receiver scheme can tolerate the radial relative acceleration up to 2 m/s2 , whereas the conventional schemes exhibit degradation at 0.5 m/s2 even with pre-compensation for the Doppler effect. Moreover, the deep-sea vertical communication trial demonstrates that the proposed reception scheme achieves the spectral efficiency of 7.25 bps/Hz with error-free transmission through four-channel processing, utilizing a bandwidth of 5 kHz, and the signal-to-noise ratio is 24.06 dB.

Abstract:With the increasing demands of underwater source development and the increase of users, underwater transfer information has also greatly increased and high-bit-rate underwater acoustic communication has become a hot topic in underwater acoustic communication research. MDAPSK (Multilevel Differential Amplitude and Phase-shift Keying) is a modulation technique having high efficiency in spectrum utilization, which transfers information by using differential amplitude and phase code, demodulates information by adopting coherent demodulation. It reduces the difficulty of system, and improves the speed of transmission. While OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) has advantages including high efficiency in spectrum and faster communication speed. After describing the schemes of the two technologies, a design scheme which concerns application of MDAPSK in the OFDM based underwater communication was given. The convolutional codes are also used in this system to realize the effectiveness and reliability in high-bit-rate underwater wireless communication. Abstract:An underwater acoustic communication scheme is described.It uses time delay among CW narrow pulses filled with different frequencies and frame synchronous CW narrow pulse to carry information.The receiver uses time delay estimation and frequency detection for decoding.The element intervals are used to overcome the multi-path effect,improve frequency band effici-ency,and reduce the number of pulses so as to save energy and increase system reliability.Lake trial results show that the rate of data transmission is moderate,coding and decoding are easy to implement,and the system is robust.

Abstract:The traditional physical layer key generation technology uses channel temporal variation, reciprocity, and spatial decorrelation to realize key distribution and fast update. However, due to the complex, time-varying and time-delayed features, the underwater acoustic channel environment often changes during channel detection, resulting in impaired channel reciprocity. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing pilot structure based on the features of underwater acoustic time-varying multipath channel. The structure can complete key detection when channel reciprocity is impaired, promotes the consistency of observation sequences, and reduces the key disagreement rate. The theoretical deduction proves the validity of the proposed method under an underwater acoustic multipath time-varying channel. Also, the simulation results verify the feasibility of the proposed method.

A Novel Frame Synchronization Scheme for Underwater Optical Wireless Communication with Reduced Complexity.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel frame synchronization method for underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) systems with on-off keying (OOK) modulation. Considering the frame structure that sync word is periodically embedded in the bitstream, the proposed method jointly estimates the sync word position, data sequence and channel gain based on the received signals in the period of a frame length. To reduce the implementation complexity, the original estimation problem is further simplified by utilizing the properties of OOK transmission. Simulation and experimental results both demonstrate the superiority of the proposed frame synchronization method over the correlation method. Specifically, experimental results show that the proposed method yields an optical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain of at least 1.5 dB over the correlation method under dynamic channel with bubbles.

Abstract:With the rapid development of underwater sensor networks, the design of underwater demodulators become increasingly significant. However, underwater acoustic communication is faced with many problems such as propagation time delay, multipath effect and Doppler effect due to the complexity of underwater environment. Demodulation of underwater communication signals is a challenging task. To solve this problem, we propose a novel binary phase shift keying (BPSK) demodulator for underwater acoustic communication based on convolutional neural network, which demodulates the modulation data by detecting the position of phase shift. The method proposed in this paper significantly reduces the bit error rate (BER) compared with the results of the traditional method in URPC 1 datasets (Underwater Robot Picking Contest).
