Abstract:We demonstrate the electrochemical etching of gold in a solution of hydrofluoric acid and dimethylformamide (DMF) to fabricate nanoporous gold (NpAu) films. Compared to de-alloyed NpAu, the electrochemically etched NpAu exhibits controllable pore size and etching depth by adjusting the etching conditions. We propose an etching mechanism where the organic electrolyte DMF protects the nascent gold pore walls by slowing the dissolution of gold oxide. At the same time, localized reactions occurring at the gold electrode surface focus the etching current for etching into depth. We further modify the as-prepared NpAu surface with single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and use the nanotube-decorated surface as an electrochemical sensor to detect bisphenol A, an endocrine disruptor chemical. A 100 nM limit of detection is achieved by combining the catalytic capacity of SWCNTs with the specific surface area of a NpAu electrode.

Abstract:A self-assembly method is demonstrated to link nanoparticles into nanostructure of nanochain or nanosphere. Gold nanoparticles were covered with capping molecules by forming Au–S bonds with thiol group at one terminate. Another terminating group, carboxylic acid, showed strong complex interaction with inorganic linker Zr4+ to form covalent complex bond. The different nanostructures were obtained by moving a balance between two opposite interactions, the linking interaction of Zr4+ and the electrostatic repulsive interaction of net surface charge. When the capping molecule with different chain length was used, the linked nanochain feature exhibited a tunable interdistance between the neighboring nanoparticles.

Abstract:Assemblies of gold(core)/copper(shell) nanoparticles could be prepared through the electrochemical deposition of copper metal onto self-assembled gold colloids that are immobilized via an organic film onto conductive substrates. In principle, the deposition on each particle is required to be independent of those on other particles, to develop monodispersed core-shell particles. From a simplified model, we derive formulas for the criteria to ensure the deposition independence, demonstrating the required experimental conditions of particle size, assembly density, and the ratio of the surface concentration to the bulk concentration of depositing species. In the electrolyte of 1.0 mM CuSO4/0.10 M Na2SO4, we then manage to realize the experimental conditions lying in the independent region through applying a potential of -0.030 V(vs SCE) onto self-assembled gold particles 13 +/- 1.0 nm in size, with a density of 350 mum(-2). The resulting core-shell nanoparticles show high monodispersity, especially at a relatively smaller size, because the particle size is <20 nm (with a relative standard deviation of RSD < 10%).

Abstract:Gold nano - particles of different sizes were synthesized using Frens method, the sizes of product were characterized by SEM and UV - Vis photometer. Nano - arraied gold electrodes were prepared by self assembled method and investigated by SEM and electrochemical methods. It showes that the electron transfer is blocked after the electrode is covered by the SAM, and gold nano - particles can greatly improve the capability of the electron transfer across the SAM. This result will probably help to study the mechanism of electron transfer across the SAM.

Abstract:Citrate-capped gold nanoparticles with narrow diameter distribution were prepared by the reduction of chloroauric acid with borohydride. After the gold nanoparticles were transferred to toluene solution through ligand conformation change, close-packed two-dimensional nanocrystal lattices were obtained on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) copper grids by evaporating approximately 10 µL of concentrated particle dispersion. The formation of the thiolate gold nanoparticles was investigated by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and FTIR spectra. The 2D Fourier transform power spectra of the monolayer confirmed the supperlattices’ hexagonal symmetry. Furthermore, long-range-ordered bilayer superlattices, of which the nanoparticles in the top layer piled on the ones in the bottom layer, could also be observed by transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:A new method to form a single gold nanoparticle (Au NP) is introduced. In our method, a single Au NP is spontaneously formed on the surface of a nanometer-sized platinum (Pt) electrode under open circuit potential. The single NP has been characterized by using Scanning Electron Microscopy and electrochemical methods. Electrochemical studies reveal that the small Au particle has extraordinary stability compared with that of a bulk Au phase. The extra stability of the Au NP is attributed to the formation of alloy with the Pt substrate.

Abstract:This paper provides a convenient method for fabricating architectures of Au nanoparticles on solid substrate,with precise position and density control. Our strategy is to modify Au substrate with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) terminated with different functional groups. They were chosen to be -CH3/-NH2 or -CH3/-SH according to their affinities to Au nanoparticle. Au nanoparticles assemble selectively on -NH2 or -SH terminated locations, the -NH2 functional group binding electrostatically to the nanoparticles whereas the -SH groups bonding chemically. The SAMs, acting as guiding templates for Au nanoparticles, were fabricated by the microcontact printing (mu CP) technique. A patterned or unpatterned SAM was prepared by using patterned or unpatterned poly(dimethyl)siloxane (PDMS) stamp, respectively. The coverage of -CH3 terminated SAM in the contact region is controlled by changing the concentration of "ink" solution for the stamp. After immersing the printed SAM into -SH or -NH2 thiol solutions for 2 h, a mixed SAM with a predetermined coverage of -SH or -NH2 was formed in the contact regions, and a pure -SH or -NH2 SAM was formed in the intervening area. The position and density of nanoparticles on the surface were determined by the distribution of the underlying functional groups.

Abstract:Organic thiols have received extensive attention recently because of their relative stability and ease of examination compared to other potential molecular electronic materials. In this work, scanning probe microscopy (SPM) is used to study (i) the structural properties of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) containing conjugated dithiols and (ii) the formation of the upper molecule-metal interface on dithiol SAMs. The top gold film is deposited either by thermal evaporation or by nano-transfer printing (nTP). Generally, the utility of thermal evaporation is limited because of Au diffusion through the SAMs. However, several dithiol SAMs are identified in this work that bond well to Au overlayers and act as satisfactory diffusion barriers. Coassembly of conjugated dithiols and alkanemonothiols is suggested as a route to obtain dithiols that are denser packed and more vertical (than is obtained from pure dithiol routes). High-yield nTP is demonstrated on coassembled SAMs. Advantages and limitations of different Au deposition and transfer techniques are compared on a variety of length scales.

Abstract:Nanoparticles of gold are produced by evaporation of gold atoms onto functionalized self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). SAMs of dodecanethiol (DT) and mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) on Au(111) are used as substrates and the gold particles are imaged with a scanning tunneling microscope. Gold atoms evaporated on DT monolayers diffuse rapidly to the interface between the molecular layer and the gold substrate where they form two-dimensional islands of 1 ML in height. In the case of monolayers of MUA, the strong interaction between evaporated gold and the acid group of the molecule gives rise to effective pinning of the gold atoms on top of the molecular layer and leads to the growth of three-dimensional gold nanocrystals.
Sonochemical deposition of gold nano-shells on suspended polymeric spheres

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles have drawn great interest due to their unique properties for applications in the fields of catalysis, biomedicine and environmental science depending on the architecture of the metal nanoparticle composites. Amongst different designing routes, the chemical template deposition offers great flexibility in terms of the template selection and interfacial interactions, giving rise to controllable designs. In order to control over nanoparticle size distribution and deposition efficiency, a sonochemical approach has been systematically followed in this study. Key parameters of the ultrasound-assisted deposition procedures during the seeding step to synthesise gold nanoparticle-coated poly(styrene) beads were investigated. The impact of the solution pH and the ultrasonic frequency on the template deposition was examined at 139, 300, 500 and 1000 kHz. The results, monitored by transmission electron spectroscopic imaging, show that the highest gold deposition was achieved at 300 kHz, revealing the mechanistic details of the nucleation-crystal growth behaviour as a function of ultrasonic frequency and reaction time. In addition, the concentration ratio between gold ions and poly(styrene) beads was varied. The highest deposition coverage and smallest particle size were reached at 0.05 mM and 2.5 mg, respectively. The proposed mechanism of the MNPs formation and deposition behaviour were then discussed based on the tested parameters.
Electrochemical Synthesis of Gold Nanocrystals and Their 1D and 2D Organization.

Abstract:Size-controlled gold nanocrystals were conveniently synthesized through direct electroreduction of bulk AuCl(4)(-) ions in the presence of poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). PVP greatly enhanced the gold particle formation process and also significantly retarded the gold electrodeposition process, allowing the electrochemical synthesis of gold nanocrystals to be carried out in the form of simple electroreduction. This novel electrochemical method may be extended to synthesis of other noble metal nanoparticles with controllable size on a large scale. The PVPK90-protected gold nanocrystals spontaneously self-assembled into nearly ordered 2D close-packed arrays and interesting 1D nanostructures. The aggregation of unstable PVPK17-protected gold nanocrystals resulted in the formation of ultrathin single-crystalline films. PVP plays multifunctional roles in controlling the size and shape of gold nanocrystals and in inducing individual gold nanocrystals to construct 1D nanostructures. The nanoparticle self-assembling technique based on PVP offers a simple, but effective, path to organize individual gold nanoparticles into various 1D and 2D nanostructured materials.

Abstract:A simple one-step electrodeposition method was used to fabricate various gold nanostructures on glassy carbon electrodes in a low concentration of HAuCl4 Solution (5 mM). The morphologies of final gold nanostructures can be easily controlled by varying the pH of the precursors or the deposition temperature. X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, contact angle measurements, and electrochemical methods were used to characterize them. Hierarchical waxberry-like gold nanostructures with high active surface areas were obtained in pH 4 bath, and they had a higher catalytic performance for the reduction of oxygen than the other nanogold. These gold structures also displayed an extraordinary superhydrophobicity and the contact angle increased with the increase of deposition temperature and time. Their electrocatalytic response to the oxidation of glucose was also investigated. A sensitive enzyme-free sensor can be easily developed for the detection of glucose in pH 7.4 phosphate buffer solution.

Abstract:A simple and highly reproducible technique is demonstrated for the fabrication of metallic electrodes with nanometer separation. Commercially available bare gold colloidal nanoparticles are first trapped between prefabricated large-separation electrodes to form a low-resistance bridge by an ac electric field. A large dc voltage is then applied to break the bridge via electromigration at room temperature, which consistently produces gaps in the sub-10 nm range. The technique is readily applied to prefabricated electrodes with separation up to 1 μm, which can be defined using optical lithography. The simple fabrication scheme will facilitate electronic transport studies of individual nanostructures made by chemical synthesis. As an example, measurement of a thiol-coated gold nanoparticle showing a clear Coulomb staircase is presented.

Abstract:Despite great improvements in the past decades, the controllable fabrication of metal nanoelectrodes still remains very challenging. In this work, a simple and general way to fabricate metal nanoelectrodes (Ag, Au, and Pt) is developed. On the basis of interfacial reactions at nano-liquid/liquid interfaces supported at nanopipettes, the nanoparticles can be formed in situ and have been used to block the orifices of pipettes to make nanoelectrodes. The effect of the driving force for interfacial reaction at the liquid/liquid interface, the ratio of redox species in organic and aqueous phases, and the surface charge of the inner wall of a pipette have been studied. The fabricated nanoelectrodes have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical techniques. A silver electrode with about 10 nm in radius has been employed as the scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) probe to explore the thickness of a water/nitrobenzene (W/NB) interface, and this value is equal to 0.8 ± 0.1 nm (n = 5). This method of fabrication of nanoelectrodes can be extended to other metal or semiconductor electrodes.

Abstract:Gold (Au) nanostructures exhibit unique electronic, optoelectronic and plasmonic properties. This makes them potential candidates for applications in areas including biosensing, catalysis, optics, and electronics. These unique properties are governed by the precise control over their morphologies and size. The present work investigates the electrodeposition process of Au nanostructures. Additionally, the influence of applied potential, electrolyte pH and presence of L-cysteine on the morphology, size, distribution and density of Au nanostructured was studied. The observations elucidated the relationship between the process parameters and the formation mechanism of the Au nanostructures. The morphology and composition of these Au nanostructures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction respectively.

Abstract:This paper provides a convenient method for fabricating highly controlled arrays of gold nanoparticles on silicon by combining AFM nanolithography and self-assembly techniques. Our main methodology is to fabricate nanopatterns on silicon, covered with amino group and methyl group terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), at different surface locations. These nanopatterns were then used to guide the assembly of gold nanoparticles according to their different affinities for amino and methyl groups. AFM was employed to induce a localized degradation of the methyl SAM on the silicon and therefore to control the amino SAM-covering area for nanoparticle adsorption, where the amino SAM was formed on the degraded regions by the conventional self-assembly technique. Gold nanoparticles (15 nm in diameter) selectively assembled at the AFM tip-defined amino regions, forming precisely positioned nanoparticle arrays. Such kinds of highly ordered nanoparticle assemblies are believed to contribute to the studies of nanoelectronic devices and mesoscopic phenomena.

Abstract:We present a new approach to fabricate arrays of silver nanoparticles (SNPs) on predefined positions by means of electrochemical deposition (ECD) combined with nanoimprint lithography (NIL). The SNPs arrangement, especially the density can be tuned by varying the pattern design and the preparation conditions. By this approach, various arrays of SNPs with feature size down to submicrometer can be fabricated over several square centimeters on one substrate. The SNPs arrays can be readily extended to other conductive substrates, which have potential applications in detecting and sensing fields, such as surface-enhanced raman scatter.

Abstract:The high surface areas of nanostructured electrodes can provide for significantly enhanced surface loadings of electroactive materials. The fabrication and characterization of nanoporous gold (np-Au) substrates as electrodes for bioelectrochemical applications is described. Robust np-Au electrodes were prepared by sputtering a gold-silver alloy onto a glass support and subsequent dealloying of the silver component. Alloy layers were prepared with either a uniform or nonuniform distribution of silver and, post dealloying, showed clear differences in morphology on characterization with scanning electron microscopy. Redox reactions under kinetic control, in particular measurement of the charge required to strip a gold oxide layer, provided the most accurate measurements of the total electrochemically addressable electrode surface area, A(real). Values of A(real) up to 28 times that of the geometric electrode surface area, A(geo), were obtained. For diffusion-controlled reactions, overlapping diffusion zones between adjacent nanopores established limiting semi-infinite linear diffusion fields where the maximum current density was dependent on A(geo). The importance of measuring the surface area available for the immobilization was determined using the redox protein, cyt c. The area accessible to modification by a biological macromolecule, A(macro), such as cyt c was reduced by up to 40% compared to A(real), demonstrating that the confines of some nanopores were inaccessible to large macromolecules due to steric hindrances. Preliminary studies on the preparation of np-Au electrodes modified with osmium redox polymer hydrogels and Myrothecium verrucaria bilirubin oxidase (MvBOD) as a biocathode were performed; current densities of 500 mu A cm(-2) were obtained in unstirred solutions.

Abstract:A simple strategy was developed to site-specifically deposit gold nanoparticles on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) using dip-pen nanolithography (DPN) or electrochemical dip-pen nanolithography (EDPN). As-grown SWNTs on SiQ(x)/Si substrates were directly used without any pretreatment. By adjusting the writing velocity, tip voltage bias, and the times of seeded growth processes, gold nanoparticles with sizes from several nanometers to tens of nanometers could be controllably deposited on SWNTs. E-DPN provided a route for in situ monitoring the deposition of gold nanoparticles. Without any extra processing step in solution, this route resulted in clean gold nanoparticles/SWNT heterostructures. This DPN-based strategy may find potential application for the fabrication of site-defined nanoscaled heterostructures, site-specific microelectrodes on SWNTs, and room-temperature single-electron transistors.
