Abstract:This paper presents a detailed analysis of the temporal and spectral variability of the low-energy peaked BL Lac object S5 0716+714 with a long (∼74 ks) X-ray observation performed by XMM-Newton on 2007 September 24–25. The source experiences recurrent flares on timescales of hours. The soft X-ray variations, up to a factor of ∼4, are much stronger than the hard X-ray variations. With higher energy, the variability amplitude increases in the soft X-rays but decreases in the hard X-rays. The hard X-ray variability amplitude, however, is effectively large. For the first time, we detect a soft lag of ∼1000 s between the soft and hard X-ray variations. The soft lags might become larger with larger energy differences. The overall X-ray spectra exhibit a softer-when-brighter trend, whereas the soft X-ray spectra appear to show a harder-when-brighter trend. The concave X-ray spectra of the source can be interpreted as the sum of the high-energy tail of the synchrotron emission, dominating in the soft X-rays, and the low-energy end of the inverse Compton (IC) emission, contributing more in the hard X-rays. The synchrotron spectra are steep (Γ ∼ 2.6), while the IC spectra are flat (Γ ∼ 1.2). The synchrotron spectra appear to harden with larger synchrotron fluxes, while the IC spectra seem to soften with larger IC fluxes. When the source brightens, the synchrotron fluxes increase but the IC fluxes decrease. The synchrotron tail exhibits larger flux variations but smaller spectral changes than the IC component does. The crossing energies between the two components and the trough energies of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) increase when the source brightens. The X-ray spectral variability demonstrates that the synchrotron and IC SED peaks of S5 0716+714 shift to higher energies when it brightens. The temporal variability also elucidates that the hard X-ray variations of the source might be dominated by the synchrotron tail. The simultaneous optical and UV data obtained with XMM-Newton are compared with the X-ray observations.
Xmm-Newton Observations Of The Tevbl Lacertae Object Pks 2155-304 In 2006: Signature Of Inverse Compton X-Ray Emission?

Abstract:This paper reports the first discovery of possible inverse Compton (IC) X-ray emission below 10 keV in the typical high-energy peaked BL Lac object (HBL) PKS 2155-304. Two XMM-Newton observations performed in 2006 reveal that the 0.6-10 keV X-ray spectra of the source harden (Delta Gamma similar to 0.1-0.3) at break energies of similar to 4 keV. The concave X-ray spectra of the source could be easily interpreted as a mixture of a steep component (i.e., the high-energy tail of the synchrotron emission) and a flat one (i.e., the low-energy side of the IC emission). However, the steep spectra (Gamma similar to 2.3) in the hard X-rays indicate that the synchrotron emission still dominates over the IC one, while the latter is effectively present and perceived as flattening the synchrotron spectrum in this energy range. The quasi-simultaneous optical/UV/X-ray spectral energy distributions (SEDs) obtained with XMM-Newton suggest that the concave X-ray spectra of the source could be the result of downward shift of the synchrotron peak frequency to the optical band that causes the IC emission to become more important in the hard (similar to 4-10 keV) X-ray band with respect to other cases in which the synchrotron emission peaks in the UV to soft X-ray range. This discovery provides a new clue for a smooth transition between HBLs and the low-energy peaked BL Lac objects (LBLs).

Abstract:In 2023 October-November, the blazar BL Lacertae underwent a very large-amplitude submm outburst. The usual single-zone leptonic model with the lower energy peak of the spectral energy distribution (SED) fit by the synchrotron emission from one distribution of relativistic electrons in the jet and inverse-Compton (IC) scattering of lower energy photons from the synchrotron radiation in the jet itself (synchrotron self-Compton or SSC) or those from the broad line region and torus by the same distribution of electrons cannot satisfactorily fit the broadband SED with simultaneous data at submm--optical--X-ray--GeV energies. Furthermore, simultaneous observations with IXPE indicate the X-ray polarization is undetected. We consider two different synchrotron components, one for the high flux in the submm wavelengths and another for the data at the optical band, which are supposedly due to two separate distributions of electrons. In that case, the optical emission is dominated by the synchrotron radiation from one electron distribution while the X-rays are mostly due to SSC process by another, which may result in low polarization fraction due to the IC scattering. We show that such a model can fit the broadband SED satisfactorily as well as explain the low polarization fraction at the X-rays.

Spectral Evolution of PKS 2155-304 Observed with BeppoSAX During an Active Gamma-ray Phase

Abstract:We present the results of BeppoSAX observations of PKS 2155-304 during an intense gamma-ray flare. The source was in a high X-ray state. A temporal analysis of the data reveals a tendency of the amplitude of variations to increase with energy and the presence of a soft lag with a timescale of the order 103 s. A curved continuum spectrum, with no evidence of spectral features, extends up to ~50 keV, while there is indication of a flatter component emerging at higher energies, consistent with the interpretation of the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) due to synchrotron self-Compton emission from a single region. Notably, the fitting of the SED with such a model is consistent with an interpretation of the detected soft lag due to radiative cooling, supporting the idea that radiation losses play an important role in variability. The observed shifts of the SED peaks between the lowest and highest flux levels can be accounted for by an increase of the "break" energy in the relativistic particle spectrum. The model predicts emission at TeV energies in good agreement with the recently reported detection.
Hard X-ray properties of blazars

Abstract:We have considered all blazars observed in the X-ray band and for which the slope of the X-ray spectrum is available. We have collected 421 spectra of 268 blazars, including 12 archival unpublished ASCA spectra of 7 blazars whose analysisis presented here. The X-ray spectra of blazars show trends as a function of their power, confirming that the blazar overall energy distribution can be parameterized on the basis of one parameter only, i.e. the bolometric luminosity. This is confirmed by the relatively new hard (2-10 keV) X-ray data. Our results confirm the idea that in low power objects the X-ray emission mechanism is the synchrotron process, dominating both the soft and the hard X-ray emissions. Low energy peaked BL Lac objects are intermediate, often showing harder spectra in the hard X-ray band, suggesting that the synchrotron process dominates in the soft band, with the inverse Compton process dominating at high energies. The most powerful objects have X-ray spectra that are flat both in the soft and in the hard band, consistent with a dominating inverse Compton component.

X-Ray Polarization Variability of High Spectral Peak BL Lacertaes: Cases of 1ES 1959+650 and PKS 2155-304

Abstract:The high-energy-peaked BL Lacertae objects (HBLs) are the main targets of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) for investigating the mechanisms of radiation and particle acceleration in jets. In this paper, we report the first IXPE observations of two HBLs, 1ES 1959+650 and PKS 2155--304. Both sources exhibit X-ray polarization with a confidence level exceeding 99\%, as well as significant variability in polarization across different time intervals and energy ranges. Notably, PKS 2155--304 demonstrates the highest X-ray polarization among all blazars detected by IXPE within its entire energy band (2--8 keV), with a polarization degree of $\Pi_{\rm X}=21.9\%\pm1.9\%$ (MDP$_{99}\sim$6.0\%). An even higher polarization is observed in the 3--4 keV band, reaching $\Pi_{\rm X}=28.6\%\pm2.7\%$ (MDP$_{99}\sim$8.1\%) with a confidence level of 10.8$\sigma$. Furthermore, no polarization is detected above 5 keV energy band. For 1ES 1959+650, the highest detected polarization degree in the 2--8 keV band is $\Pi_{\rm X}=12.4\%\pm0.7\%$ (MDP$_{99}\sim$2.2\%), with an electric vector position angle (EVPA) of $\psi_{\rm X}=19.7^{\circ}\pm1.6^{\circ}$. The X-ray polarization of 1ES 1959+650 exhibits evident variability, accompanied by the variations of $\psi_{\rm X}$, flux, spectrum, and energy bin. We discuss possible implications of these observational findings, including the variability in polarization, rotation of EVPA, and transition between synchrotron and synchrotron-self-Compton. We speculate that the X-rays observed during different IXPE observations originate from distinct regions in the jet and may involve diverse mechanisms for particle acceleration.

Simultaneous X-Ray and Gamma-Ray Observations of TeV Blazars: Testing Synchro-Compton Emission Models and Probing the Infrared Extragalactic Background

Abstract:The last years have seen a revolution in ground-based gamma-ray detectors. We can now detect the spectra of nearby TeV blazars like Mrk 421 and 501 out to approximately 20 TeV, and during the strongest flares, we can now follow fluctuations in these spectra on timescales close to the shortest ones likely in these objects. We point out that this represents a unique opportunity. Using these and future detectors in combination with broadband X-ray satellites like SAX and RXTE, we will be able to simultaneously follow all significant X-ray/gamma-ray variations in a blazar's emission. This will provide the most stringent test yet of the synchrotron-Compton emission model for these objects. In preparation for the data to come, we present sample SSC model calculations using a fully self-consistent, accurate code to illustrate the variability behavior one might see (the range of behavior is wider than many expect) and to show how good timing information can probe physical conditions in the source. If the model works, i.e., if X-ray/TeV variations are consistent with being produced by a common electron distribution, then we show it is possible to robustly estimate the blazar's intrinsic TeV spectrum from its X-ray spectrum. Knowing this spectrum, we can then determine the level of absorption in the observed spectrum. Constraining this absorption, due to gamma-ray pair production on diffuse radiation, provides an important constraint on the infrared extragalactic background intensity. Without the intrinsic spectrum, we show that detecting absorption is very difficult and argue that Mrk 421 and 501, as close as they are, may already be absorbed by a factor 2 at approximately 3 TeV. This should not be ignored when fitting emission models to the spectra of these objects.

X-ray Synchrotron Spectral Hardenings from Compton and Synchrotron Losses in Extended Chandra Jets

Abstract:Chandra observations of knots and hot spots in spatially resolved X-ray jets of radio galaxies show that the X-ray fluxes often lie above an extrapolation from the radio-to-optical continuum fluxes. We show that combined synchrotron and Compton losses on a single power-law electron injection function can produce a hardening in the electron spectrum at electron Lorentz factors \gamma \~ 2e8/[\Gamma(1+z)] due to KN energy losses on the cosmic microwave background radiation. Here \Gamma is the bulk Lorentz factor of the outflow, and z is the source redshift. This produces a flattening in the spectrum at frequencies >~ 8e16 \delta B_{\mu G}/[\Gamma^2(1+z)^3] Hz, where B_{\mu G} is the magnetic field in the comoving plasma frame in units of micro-Gauss and \delta is the Doppler factor. A single population of synchrotron-emitting electrons may therefore produce the radio-to-X-ray continuum in some radio galaxy knots, such as those in 3C 273.

The peculiar variable X-ray spectrum of the active galactic nucleus PKS 2005-489

Abstract:PKS 2005-489 is a well-known, bright southern BL Lac object that has been detected up to TeV energies. In a low-flux state it exhibits the expected multiwavelength double-peaked spectrum in the radio -- $\gamma$-ray band. The high-flux state shows extreme flux variations in the X-ray band with a hardening as well as a peculiar curved feature in the spectrum. Thus far, PKS 2005-489 is the only source to exhibit such a feature. To study the X-ray variability further, we obtained the first hard X-ray spectrum of the source with NuSTAR. We compare quasi-simultaneous radio, optical, UV, soft and hard X-ray, and $\gamma$-ray data of PKS 2005-489 to archival data in order to study its broadband behavior. We find a very consistent quiet state in the SED, with little variation in spectral shape or flux between the 2012 and 2020 data. A possible explanation for the peculiar X-ray spectrum in the flaring state is an additional component in the jet, possibly accelerated via magnetic reconnection, that is not co-spatial to the low-flux state emission region.

Abstract:We present the analysis of archival data from ROSAT and ASCA of a serendipitous BL Lac object PKS 2316-423. Because of its featureless nonthermal radio/optical continuum, PKS 2316-423 has been called a BL Lac candidate in the literature. PKS 2316-423 was evidently variable over the multiple X-ray observations; in particular, a variable high-energy tail of the synchrotron radiation is revealed. The X-ray spectral analysis provides further evidence of the synchrotron nature of its broadband spectrum: a steep and downward-curving spectrum between 0.1 and 10 keV, typical of high-energy peaked BL Lac objects (HBLs). The spectral energy distribution (SED) through radio to X-ray yields the synchrotron radiation peak at frequency v(p) = 7.3 x 10(15) Hz, with integrated luminosity of L-syn = 2.1 x 10(44) ergs s(-1). The averaged SED properties of PKS 2316-423 are very similar to those "intermediate" BL Lac objects (IBLs) found recently in several deep surveys, such as Deep X-ray Radio Blazar, Radio-Emitting X-ray, and ROSAT-Green Bank surveys. We suggest that PKS 2316-423 is an IBL though it also shows some general features of an HBL. Actually, this double attribute of PKS 2316-423 provides a good test of the prediction that an IBL object can show either synchrotron or inverse Compton characteristics in different variability states.
Simultaneous Optical to X-ray Spectra of OJ 287: Insights into X-ray spectral changes and particle spectra

Abstract:OJ 287 is one of the most dynamic BL Lacertae objects that has exhibited behaviour representative of the entire blazar class and is also one of the best sources with simultaneous multi-wavelength coordinated data. Motivated by strong X-ray variability exhibited by the source, we systematically investigated the simultaneous optical to X-ray emission of the source with a focus on the spectral state of the lowest recorded X-ray flux state to understand the X-ray spectral changes. The optical-UV emission being synchrotron, the associated spectral variation is a direct reflection of the high-energy end of the underlying particle spectrum and its power-law continuation to X-rays can drastically affect the X-ray spectrum without much change in optical flux. Thus the combined optical to X-ray provides a potential tool to investigate and explore particle spectrum as well as highest particle energies. We report the finding of a power-law optical-UV spectrum with a photon spectral index of 2.71 $\pm$ 0.03 continuing to X-ray energies and accounting for this contribution at X-ray results in a photon spectral index of 1.15-1.3. We discuss the possible implications of this on X-ray spectral variations and the particle spectrum.

X‐Ray Spectral Variability of Extreme BL Lacertae Active Galactic Nucleus H1426+428

Abstract:Between 2002 March 7 and 2002 June 15, intensive X-ray observations were carried out on the extreme BL Lac object H1426+428 with instruments on board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). These instruments provide measurements of H1426+428 in the crucial energy range that characterizes the first peak of its spectral energy distribution. This peak, which is almost certainly due to synchrotron emission, has previously been inferred to be in excess of 100 keV. By taking frequent observations over a four-month campaign, which included similar to450 ks of RXTE time, studies of flux and spectral variability on multiple timescales were performed, along with studies of spectral hysteresis. The 3-24 keV X-ray flux and spectra exhibited significant variability, implying variability in the location of the first peak of the spectral energy distribution. Hysteresis patterns were observed, and their characteristics have been discussed within the context of emission models.

Abstract:We describe further observations of QSO J0906+6930, a z=5.48 blazar likely to be detected in gamma-rays. New radio and X-ray data place significant constraints on any kpc-scale extension of the VLBA-detected jet. Improved optical spectroscopy detects absorption from an intervening galaxy at z=1.849 and raise the possibility that this distant, bright source is lensed. We combine the new data into an improved SED for the blazar core and comment on the Compton keV-GeV flux component.

Fast X-ray Variability of PKS 2155-304: A Cross Correlation Analysis

Abstract:PKS 2155-304 is one of the prototypes of BL Lac objects. Its spectral energy distribution is known from the radio to the TeV band and has two peaks, one in the soft X-rays and the other in the TeV region. These may be interpreted within the synchrotron self-Compton model, which attributes the first peak to synchrotron radiation of electrons, which also produce the second peak via Compton scattering of the same synchrotron photons. The emission is relativistically boosted in the observer direction. A way of testing the model and characterizing its geometrical and kinematical properties is through the study of correlated variability in different bands. Here we report on the search and accurate study of lags in the X-ray light curves obtained with the BeppoSAX satellite during the performance verification phase in November 1996 and compare the results with the findings of a similar analysis applied to the November 1997 BeppoSAX and 1994 ASCA data.
Understanding the Very High Energy γ-ray excess in nearby blazars using leptonic model

Abstract:The availability of simultaneous X-ray and Very High Energy (VHE) observations of blazars helps to identify the plausible radiative contributors to the VHE emission. Under leptonic scenario, the VHE emission from BL Lacs are attributed to the synchrotron self Compton (SSC) emission. However, many BL Lacerate (BL Lacs) have shown significant hardening at VHE after correction for the Extra Galactic Background Light (EBL) attenuation. We study the spectral hardening of two nearby BL Lac objects, Mkn 421 and Mkn 501 having most number of simultaneous X-ray and VHE observations available among all the blazars. These BL Lacs are relatively close and the effect of EBL attenuation is relatively minimal/negligible. We study the scatter plot between the X-ray spectral indices and intrinsic VHE indices to identify the plausible origin of the VHE emission. For Mkn 501, the VHE spectral indices are steeper than X-ray spectra, suggesting the scattering process happening at extreme Klein-Nishina regime. On the other hand, for Mkn 421, the VHE spectra is remarkably harder than the X-ray spectra, which suggests an additional emission mechanism other than the SSC process. We show this hard VHE spectrum of Mkn 421 can be explained by considering the inverse Compton (IC) emission from a broken power law electron distribution with Maxwellian pileup. The possibility of the hadronic contribution at VHE {\gamma}-rays is also explored by modeling the hard spectrum under photomeson process.

Multi-wavelength study of TeV blazar 1ES 1218+304 using gamma-ray, X-ray and optical observations

Abstract:We report the multi-wavelength study for a high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac 1ES 1218+304 using near-simultaneous data obtained during the period from January 1, 2018, to May 31, 2021 (MJD 58119-59365) from various instruments including Fermi-LAT, Swift-XRT, AstroSat, and optical from Swift-UVOT $\&$ TUBITAK observatory in Turkey. The source was reported to be flaring in TeV $\gamma$-ray band during 2019, but no significant variation is observed with Fermi-LAT. A sub-hour variability is seen in the SXT light curve, suggesting a compact emission region for their variability. However, hour scale variability is observed in the $\gamma$-ray light curve. A "softer-when-brighter" trend is observed in $\gamma$-rays, and an opposite trend is seen in X-rays suggesting both emissions are produced via two different processes as expected from an HBL source. We have chosen the two epochs in January 2019 to study and compare their physical parameters. A joint fit of SXT and LAXPC provides a constraint on the synchrotron peak, roughly estimated to be $\sim$1.6 keV. A clear shift in the synchrotron peak is observed from $\sim$1 keV to above 10 keV revealing its extreme nature or behaving like an EHBL-type source. The optical observation provides color-index variation as "blue-when-brighter". The broadband SED is fitted with a single-zone SSC model, and their parameters are discussed in the context of a TeV blazar and the possible mechanism behind the broadband emission.

Spectral evolution of the X-ray nova XTE J1859+226 during its outburst observed by BeppoSAX and RXTE

Abstract:We report results of an extensive analysis of the X-ray nova XTE J1859+226 observed with BeppoSAX and RXTE during its 1999 outburst. We modelled the source spectrum with a multicolour blackbody-like feature plus the generic Comptonization model BMC which has the advantage of providing spectral description of the emitted-radiation properties without assumptions on the underlying physical process. The multicolour component is attributed to the geometrically thin accretion disk, while the Comptonization spectrum is claimed to originate in the innermost sub-Keplerian region of the system (transition layer). We find that XTE J1859+226 covers all the spectral states typical of black-hole sources during its evolution across the outburst, however during the very high state, when the disk contribution to the total luminosity is more than 70% and the root mean square variability > 5%, the high-energy photon index is closer to a hard state value (Gamma ~ 1.8). The BMC normalization and photon index Gamma well correlate with the radio emission, and we also observed a possible saturation effect of Gamma at the brightest radio emission levels. A strong positive correlation was found between the fraction of Comptonized seed photons and the observed integrated root mean square variability, which strengthens the idea that most of the fast variability in these systems is provided by the innermost Compton cloud, which may be also identified as a jet.

A new ordering parameter of spectral energy distributions from synchrotron-self-Compton emitting blazars

Abstract:The broadband SEDs of blazars exhibit two broad spectral components, which in leptonic emission models are attributed to synchrotron radiation and synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) radiation of relativistic electrons. During high state phases, the high-frequency SSC component often dominates the low-frequency synchrotron component, implying that the inverse Compton SSC losses of electrons are at least equal to or greater than the synchrotron losses of electrons. We calculate from the analytical solution of the kinetic equation of relativistic electrons, subject to the combined linear synchrotron and nonlinear synchrotron self-Compton cooling, for monoenergetic injection the time-integrated total synchrotron and SSC radiation fluences and spectral energy distributions (SED). Depending on the ratio of the initial cooling terms, displayed by the injection parameter $\alpha$, we find for $\alpha\ll 1$, implying complete linear cooling, that the synchrotron peak dominates the inverse Compton peak and the usual results of the spectra are recovered. For $\alpha\gg 1$ the SSC peak dominates the synchrotron peak, proving our assumption that in such a case the cooling becomes initially non-linear. The spectra also show some unique features, which can be attributed directly to the non-linear cooling. To show the potential of the model, we apply it to outbursts of 3C 279 and 3C 454.3, successfully reproducing the SEDs. The results of our analysis are promising, and we argue that this non-equilibrium model should be considered in future modeling attempts for blazar flares.

Abstract:Mkn 421 was repeatedly observed with BeppoSAX in 1997-1998. This is the first of two papers where we present the results of a thorough temporal and spectral analysis of all the data available to us, focusing in particular on the flare of April 1998, which was simultaneously observed also at TeV energies. Here we focus on the time analysis, while the spectral analysis and physical interpretation are presented in the companion paper. The detailed study of the flare in different energy bands reveals very important new results: i) hard photons lag the soft ones by 2-3 ks -a behavior opposite to what is normally found in high energy peak BL Lacs X-ray spectra; ii) the flare light curve is symmetric in the softest X-ray band, while it becomes increasingly asymmetric at higher energies, with the decay being progressively slower than the rise; iii) the flux decay of the flare can be intrinsically achromatic if a stationary underlying emission component is present. The temporal and spectral information obtained challenge the simplest models currently adopted for the (synchrotron) emission and most importantly provide clues on the particle acceleration process.
