Feasibility on Improving Awareness of Cerebral Palsy by Health Education in Countryside

Abstract:Objective To study the feasibility of improving the awareness of infant cerebral palsy (CP) in the countryside, town and urban areas. Methods A countryside-town and a municipal community center were chosen as the survey sites. Health education and questionnaire about Child Development and CP Basic Knowledge were regularly carried out once or twice in the subsequent 3 months (13 questions each time, totally 5 times). The correct percentage of over 5 answers and the mean correct numbers were recorded to be evaluated. Results There were 241 subjects in the countryside-town which included 208 parents with 0～1 year-old baby, and 305 subjects in the urban center which included 300 parents with 0～1 year-old baby in the investigation and questionnaire survey. From the 1st to the 5th questionnaire survey, the correct percentage of over 5 questions in the countryside-town was 0, 10%, 26%, 28% and 27% respectively, and that in the urban center was 9%, 25%, 62%, 80% and 81%, respectively. The mean correct number in the countryside-town was 0, 2, 4, 4 and 4, and that in the urban center was 2, 4, 7, 9 and 8. Conclusions The awareness of basic knowledge of CP in both countryside-town and urban community center is far less adequate. Regular health education might be an effective way to improve the condition, though it is difficult to develop the health cause in the countryside.
