The Experiences of Repeated Hospitalization among Elderly Patients with Chronic Diseases:A Qualitative Descriptive Study

Abstract:Objective:To understand the experiences of repeated hospitalization among elderly patients with chronic diseases. Method:Descriptive qualitative method was used. 14 elderly patients with chronic diseases and repeated hospitalization were interviewed, and content analysis was used for data analysis. Results:The participants identiifed uncontrollable disease process and insufifcient community healthcare resources as the main reasons for repeated hospitalization. They experienced stresses from disease management, discomfort, impaired self-care, ifnancial and care burdens, and dififculty in discussion about death issues. They believed supports from hospital, family and social network were very important. They no longer expected the diseases to be cured during the hospitalization. They preferred more efforts on symptom control, reduction of sufferings and re-hospitalization. Conclusions:Understanding elderly patients' perceptions of repeated hospitalization, stresses, supports, as well as their expectations, will facilitate health care providers' efforts on ensuring continuity of care, so as to reduce repeated hospitalization among elderly patients and improve their experiences with re-hospitalization.
