Abstract:Disability statistics is an important part of national conditions and livelihood statistics. In China, there are National Sample Survey on Disability, National Specific Survey on Disabil-ity and Administrative Survey organized and executed by CDPF. Other government admini-strations also carry out surveys as supplements of data on disability. Over the years we have accumulated a wealth of data resources. With the development of the disabled undertakings, disability statistics is getting closer to the international standards. Nevertheless, there are some shortcomings of disability statistics should be mentioned, such as lack of top-level design in data exchange, updating and management; lack of coordination and sharing mechanisms; lack of continuity and stability of disability surveys; imperfection of electronic system and platform of information registration; and lack of attention on data collection and analysis of gender diversity and children perspective.
An Analysis of Epidemiological Characteristics of Sample Survey on Disability in Beijing 2006

Abstract:Objective:Understand the present situation and epidemiological characteristics of people with Disabilities in Beijing.Method:Use the method of descriptive study to analyze the data of disabled in Beijing which comes from the data of the Second China National Sample Survey on Disability.Result:The overall prevalence of disabilities was 6.49%.The prevalence of physical disability was the highest(2.31%),while the prevalence of speech disability was the lowest(0.04%).15.95% and 10.49% of all the disabled persons were categorized to grade1 and 2 disabilities,respectively.28.09% and 45.47% disabled persons suffered from grade 3 and 4 disability,respectively.Among the various age groups,those aged 75 years and older had the highest prevalence of total disabilities,and with the increasing of age,the prevalence of disabilities also increased.Men's prevalence of visual and mental disability were lower than Women' s,but the prevalence of hearing and intellectual disability were higher than Women's.The prevalence of disability in Beijing rural area was higher than urban.The prevalence of speech,physical,intellectual and multiple disabilities in Beijing urban area were lower than rural.Among the 18 districts in Beijing,PingGu district had the highest prevalence of disabilities(10.66%),while Fengtai district had the lowest(5.01%).Conclusion:The overall prevalence of disabilities in Beijing at present was 6.49%,stayed at 11th of all 31 provinces(municipality or autonomous region) in China.Physical disability had the highest prevalence,while speech disability had the lowest.75 years and older had the highest prevalence of disabilities.The prevalence of overall disabilities in rural areas was higher than urban in Beijing.

Abstract:Socioeconomic inequalities associated with multiple disabilities have not been explored in China. This is the first study to explore changes in multiple disabilities among persons aged 15-64 years in China. Data were derived from the 1987 and 2006 China National Sample Surveys on Disability, which are nationally representative population-based surveys. Both surveys used multistage, stratified, cluster random sampling with probability proportional to size to derive nationally representative samples. We used standard weighting procedures to construct sample weights considering the multistage stratified cluster sampling survey scheme. The impact of socioeconomic inequalities on multiple disabilities was examined by using logistic regression. Higher prevalence rates among rural residents than urban residents were observed. Male was more vulnerable than female in the present study. Minority ethnicity did increase the risk of multiple disabilities, but this association inversed in the logistic regression model. The widening discrepancy between urban and rural areas indicates that the most important priorities of disability prevention in China are to reinforce health promotion and to improve health services in rural communities.

Abstract:The causes of disability in China was discussed using the data from the Second National Sampling Survey on Disability in 2006 in the paper.The results indicate that the main cause of disability is acquired,and only less than 10% of all is caused by congenital disabilities..The causes have great differences between different areas,urban and rural,and different genders.At the same time,different age groups faced different risks of disability.It's found that the disability risks from non-communicable diseases and injury hurt increased gradually with the of age changing(or growing).Therefore,comprehensive systematic strategy to prevent disability in lifetime should be mapped out to cope with the different high-risk factors in different age.Measures should be taken to strengthen the health awareness and decrease the exposure in the risk of disability.Furthermore,we should strengthen the disability control and prevention in high-risk population.
An Analysis on the Survival Rate of Persons with Physical Disability in China

Abstract:Based on the nationally typical database,this paper estimated survival rate of persons with physical disability in the years from 2007 to 2010,in order to describe its mortality rate and find out the characteristics of subgroups with high mortality rate.These results can provide data support for further survival analysis and improve the survival of persons with physical disability.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate changes in the age-adjusted prevalence of disability in transitional China from 1987 to 2006.METHODS:Data from nationally representative surveys conducted in 1987 and 2006 were used to calculate age-adjusted disability prevalence rates by applying appropriate sample weights and directly adjusting to the age distribution of the 1990 Chinese population. Trends were assessed in terms of average annual percentage change.FINDINGS:The estimated number of disabled people in China in 1987 and 2006 was 52.7 and 84.6 million, respectively, corresponding to a weighted prevalence of 4.9% and 6.5%. The age-adjusted prevalence of disability decreased by an average of 0.5% per year (average annual percentage change, AAPC: -0.5%; 95% confidence interval, CI: -0.7 to -0.4) during 1987-2006. However, it increased by an average of 0.3% (AAPC: 0.3%; 95% CI: 0.1 to 0.5) per year in males and by an average of 1.0% (AAPC: 1.0%; 95% CI: 0.8 to 1.2) per year among rural residents, whereas among females it showed an average annual decrease of 1.5% (AAPC: -1.5%; 95% CI: -1.7 to -1.3) and among urban residents, an average annual decrease of 3.9% (AAPC: -3.9%; 95% CI: -4.3 to -3.5). Despite significant declining trends for hearing and speech, intellectual and visual disabilities, the annual age-adjusted prevalence of physical and mental disabilities increased by an average of 11.2% (AAPC: 11.2%; 95% CI: 10.5 to 11.9) and 13.3% (AAPC: 13.3%; 95% CI: 10.7 to 16.2), respectively.CONCLUSION:In China, the age-adjusted prevalence of disability has declined since 1987, with inconsistencies dependent on the type of disability. These findings call for continuing and specific efforts to prevent disabilities in China.

Abstract:The establishment of a population - based disability surveillance system in China, will become an important part of the effect evaluation for measures,strategies,and social security of disability prevention and also a platform for the development of the undertakings for disabled population.The significance,objective,and effect of establishing a population - based disability surveillance system and developing preventive strategies,the principle,procedures and methods of implementation,data sources and collection,establishment of database,data management and quality control,,as well as the advantages of establishing disability surveillance system in China were elaborated in this paper,with an aim to build a real - time,longterm, and dynamic surveillance system with Chinese characteristics for the entire population,to timely analyze and evaluate the effect of the disability prevention and intervention,and the utilization, demand and availability of disability security services,and to provide a reliable and effective platform to improve the life quality of the disabled population.

Abstract:This research aimed at studying the prevalence and risk factors of disabilities in different population, which through the analysis of the data from the Second National Sampling Survey on Disability in China. The characteristics and high-risk causes of congenital disabilities and acquired disabilities will be analyzed, as well as the determinant factors of both types. Strategy and feasible intervention measures for disability control and prevention according to various high-risk causes of disabilities will be put forward. The results indicated that the prevalence and causes were different at different age, thus the risk of disability exists throughout the whole life. Therefore, the prevention of disability should be a life-long concept. According to the disability prevention strategy of WHO and the status in quo of the prevalence and causes of the disabilities in China, the following measures should be taken in China's disability prevention: 1. Transform the understanding of disability and strengthen the macro planning of disability prevention. 2. Give priority to primary prevention. 3. Set community as the basic unit of disability prevention. 4. Establish non-risk environments. 5. Strengthen people's health awareness and decrease the exposure in the risk of disability. 6. Strengthen the disability control and prevention in high-risk population.

Abstract:The prevalence of disabilities and socioeconomic status among persons with ethnic minorities in China and the comparison with Han ethnic disabled was discussed using the data from the Second National Sampling Survey on Disability in 2006 in the paper.The results indicate that the prevalence rate of disabilities in male was significantly higher than that in females(6.46% v 6.03%),and only 10 percent of female disabled with ethic minority was educated higher than junior high school.25 percent of disabled persons in rural setting lived under living threshold line and 71 percent of disabled person in rural area never has participated in any kind of social security.Therefore,female,older persons,living in rural area for persons with ethnic disabilities would be priority for poverty diminishment,coverage of social security and improvement of education level.

Abstract:Background: Mental disorders are strongly associated with disabilities. National survey on disability could provide a reliable basis for policymaking in care and rehabilitation of disabled persons. This study aimed to describe the disability prevalence rates attributed to mental disorders, their distribution by sociodemographic factors, and utilizations of service. Methods: This study is a secondary data analysis of the Second National Sample Survey on Disability in 2006. The disability and severity were assessed using the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0. Mental disorders were diagnosed according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision Classification of Mental and Behavioral Disorders. Using descriptive and analytic epidemiological methods, prevalence rates of disability attributed to mental disorders and service use were calculated. Results: Data of 2,526,145 respondents were analyzed. The disability prevalence rate attributed to mental disorders in China was 6.3‰, accounting for 9.9% of all disabled people. Regarding disability prevalence attributed to mental disorders, it showed that gender, residential area, marital status, education level, and economic area were related to the prevalence distributions. The proportions of mild disability were highest in the disabled people with onset age of 18–64 years, while the proportion of extremely severe disability was highest in the disabled people with onset age of 65 years and above. Only 58.6% of disabled people attributed to mental disorders used some of the services. Conclusions: There are statistical differences of disability prevalence attributed to mental disorders by people and region in China. Service use in disabled people with mental disorders is insufficient.

Abstract:OBJECTIVETo explore the prevalence of visual, hearing, speech, physical, intellectual and mental disabilities in China, 2006.METHODSThe reference time of the Second National Sample Survey on Disability was zero hour, April 1, 2006, and 2,526,145 individuals were investigated from 31 provinces autonomous regions or municipalities under the "Disability Classification and Standards for the Second National Sampling Survey on Disability". The classified prevalence rates of 6 types of disability was analyzed.RESULTS(1)The overall prevalence of disabilities was 6.39%, which was 1.49 percent higher than the prevalence rate in 1987. The prevalence of physical disability was the highest (2.34%), while the speech disability was the lowest (0.53%). (2)29.49% of all the disabled persons were classified as severe who suffered grade-1 and grade-2 while 70.51% of them were moderately and mildly disabled suffering from grade-3 and grade-4. Over 65% of the speech disability and over 45% of the mental disability were identified, which were much higher than the other 4 types of disability. (3) The correlation between age, gender, residential place and each of 6 types of disability were statistically significant (P < 0.001). (4) Among all the disabling factors of speech disability and mental retardation disability, congenital factors made great contribution (22.67% and 22.41% respectively).CONCLUSIONAccording to the analysis results,the characteristics of disabled persons in China were as follows: ageing population had high prevalence rate of disability; all the population mainly suffered moderate and mild disability, but the proportion of severe disability was not low; the prevalence rate was higher and the main reasons caused disability were diversification in rural area.
A Research on Retirement Age Policy for People with Disabilities in China

Abstract:Based on data from 2007-2010 national disabled monitoring survey in China, this paper estimated life expectancy of people with disabilities from 2007 to 2010 and then explored the retirement age policy. By comparing their life expectancies with the statutory retirement age, this paper found out that pension drawing years for people with disabilities were less than 10 years, except for those with sight and hearing disabilities. It showed that the current retirement policy is unfair to persons with disabilities. According to supposition and calculation raised by this paper, it proposed suggestions on retirement age policy for the disabled.

Abstract:The prevalence and risk factors associated with psychiatric disability among Chinese children under 14 years of age has long been of interest. Data used in the study included two nationally representative population-based surveys from the first and second China National Sample Surveys on Disability, conducted in 1987 and 2006. Both surveys used multistage, stratified random cluster sampling, with probability proportion to size, to derive nationally representative samples. Age-standardized point prevalence of mental disability was estimated through direct standardization using the 2000 census-derived Chinese population as the standard. Associations between psychiatric disability in children and possible risk factors were examined by logistic regression. Age-standardized point prevalence of psychiatric disability in children increased sharply from 0.18% to 1.11% in the 20 years between surveys. In the logistic regression analysis, the children's age and household size presented inverse associations with psychiatric disability in both surveys, although these associations were not all significant in 1987. Residential area, minority group status and gender of children were consistently associated with psychiatric disability in both surveys. To face the challenge of rising prevalence rates of psychiatric disability among children in China, the government should adopt more vigorous strategies to prevent it, especially for minority ethnicity children and those living in rural areas.
Rehabilitation Demand and Utilization of Rehabilitation Services among Chinese Disabled People

Abstract:Based on the 2009 surveillance data on disabled people,this study aimed to analyze the rehabilitation demands and utilization of rehabilitation services among Chinese disabled people.The results indicated that the rehabilitation demands were still high and the utilization of rehabilitation services was relatively low.Price of the rehabilitation services,economic status of the disabled people,and knowledge of rehabilitation services were the main factors influencing the utilization of rehabilitation services among Chinese disabled people.More specified strategies should be taken to establish an efficient rehabilitation system and an evaluation system.
Comparative Study on the Prevention Strategy of Congenital Disabilities and Acquired Disabilities

Abstract:The prevalence and causes of congenital disabilities and acquired disabilities in China was addressed with data of Chinese Second National Sampling Survey on Disability in 2006.Based on the research findings,it's putting forward the strategy and measures on both disabilities.The results show that the prevalence of acquired disabilities is much higher than that of congenital disabilities and the prevalence of the population with different age,income and location has much difference.The high-risk age of the congenital disabilities is usually at infant and adolescent stage,while the high-risk age of different acquired disabilities varies.At infant and adolescent stage,it's found there are mainly disabilities from infective diseases,and the ratio of disabilities from non-communicative diseases rises along with the age increase.The ratio of disabilities from injury and hurt would reach the highest level at 15-39 years old.The recommendation is that the strategy and priority to prevent and control congenital disabilities and acquired disabilities should be clarified by focusing on age and diseases in life course,and a systematic lifetime strategy and measures on disability prevention and control should be mapped out.
[Comparison of Prevalence of Physical Disabilities in Year 2006 and 1987, in China].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To understand the present situation and the changes of epidemiological characteristics of people with physical disabilities during the past 20 years in China.METHODS:Data regarding physical disability from China National Sample Survey on Disability in 1987 and 2006 were collected and analyzed as well as compared with different epidemiological methods.RESULTS:In China, it was estimated that the overall prevalence of physical disabilities (PD) was 1.42% and there was an increase of 16.57 million people with PD for the past 20 years. In 1987, mild extremities took the largest proportion among all the people with PD, so as in 2006. The prevalence of PD was 3.76% in Tibet Autonomous Region which was also the highest in the country while Guangdong province had the lowest--0.64% in 1987. However, in 2006,Beijing had the highest prevalence of 3.20%, and the Zhejiang province the lowest--1.74%. PD prevalence increased in almost all China except Tibet Autonomous Region while Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region had the largest increase. The prevalence of PD showed an obvious increase in the rural areas exceeding the urban areas. The prevalence of PD in males was higher than in females. The trend that the increase of age-specific physical disability prevalence parallel to the increase of age,had not changed during the past 20 years. However the prevalence of different age groups with PD distinctly did change. The prevalence of PD in 0-14 of age only increased 0.10% while the prevalence in 65 year olds and over had increased 5.35% during the past 20 years.CONCLUSION:During the past 20 years, the total number of people with physically disabled had increased in China. Factors as living in the North and Northeastern parts of the country or in the rural areas,being males and elderly, had become the high-risk populations.
Study on the main disability reasons and their changes in the elderly with physical disabilities in China

Abstract:Objective To understand the current status and the changes in main disability reasons in the elderly with physical disabilities during the past 20 years in China. Methods　The data of the elderly with physical disabilities aged 60 years and over that were from the national sample survey on disability in 1987 and 2006 were analyzed and compared by epidemiology methods. Results　In 2006.the main disability reasons in the elderly with physical disabilities aged 60 and over were disease factors,injury factors,other factors and congenital diseases and eccyliosis.The cause-specific disability prevalences were 5.262%,1.885%,1.000% and 0.200%respectively.Cerebrovaseular diseases showed the highest cause-specific disability prevalence of 2.552% in all the causes.Compared with the national sample survey in 1987,the cause-specific disability prevalences of disease factors and injury factors were obviously increased.The top five disability reasons in the elderly with physical disabilities aged 60 years and over in China were cerebrovascular diseases,arthropathy,miscellaneous traumas,other causes and unknown causes in the national sample survey in 2006;while vascular diseases,other traumas,other causes,unknown causes and pyogenic infection were the top five disability reasons in the national sample survey in 1987.The age-specific top five reasons were basically the same with the total top five disability reasons of the elderly with physical disabilities aged 60 years and over,and also the same relationship between sex-specific top five reasons and Iotal top five disability reasons in 1987 and 2006. Conclusions　Disease factors are the main disability reasons of the elderly with physical disabilities aged 60 years and over,and cerebrovascular diseases have the highest cause specific disability prevalence.The prevention and cure of cerebrovascular diseases,arthropathy and other traumas become the key points to prevent physical disability in the elderly.
Basic Service Condition and Needs of Persons with Disabilities in Beijing

Abstract:Based on the 2015 special survey data on disabled people's basic service condition and needs, this paper analyzed the basic service and needs of people with disability identification cards in Beijing. The result indicated that people with disability identification cards in Beijing enjoy a higher level of service of rehabilitation, assistive devices and care at home, the social security system has almost been completely implemented. People with different sex, age and residence, disability status demand strikingly different basic service utilization and needs. Based on the analysis, the paper proposes that further exploitation of special survey data should be conducted and more specific strategies should be taken to strengthen livelihood security and establish varieties of the units providing service for persons with disabilities.
Descriptive epidemiological study of disability attributable to behavioral syndromes associated with physiological disturbances and physical factors in China

Abstract:Objective:To provide information for making health strategy of prevention and rehabilitation of disability attributable to behavioral syndromes associated with physiological disturbances and physical factors,the disability prevalence and its distribution were described,and the disability grades and their severity of function impairments were analyzed.Methods:Using descriptive epidemiological method,the data of the Second National Sampling Survey on Disability in 2006 were analyzed.The disability prevalence of behavioral syndromes associated with physiological disturbances and physical factors and its distribution in different people and regions were statistically calculated.Results:The total number of the respondents was 2,526,145.The disability prevalence rate of behavioral syndromes associated with physiological disturbances and physical factors was 2.3/100,000.The prevalence rate in females was 2.46 times higher than that in males(P < 0.01).The prevalence rate in the unemployed was 2.21 times higher than that in the employed(P < 0.01).Compared with the people with loweducation level,the people with higher education levels had statistically lower prevalence rates(high school or above,middle school,elementary school or belowwere 9.8/100,000,29.3/100,000,61.0/100,000,P < 0.05).There was no significant difference in the distribution of the prevalence rates in different marital status(P > 0.05).The prevalence rates varied in31 provinces with statistical significance(P < 0.01).The rate in Guangdong was the highest.Among the disabled attributable to behavioral syndromes associated with physiological disturbances and physical factors,the group of mild psychiatric disability was the majority,accounting for 68%.It was relatively mild to be impaired in physical move and ability of self-care among the behavioral syndromes disabled,while it was severer to be impaired in the ability of understanding and communication,interpersonal relationship,daily activity,and social participation.Conclusion:The results showthat the distribution of behavioral syndromes disability varies in population and regions.It should be paid attention to the disability with different impairments to daily and social activities.

Abstract:Objective To know the health status of the disabled in Shanghai and to provide scientific basis for health intervention and management of disabled persons. Methods Through the ” Comprehensive Information Platform for Rehabilitation” of Shanghai Disabled Persons' Federation,93 267 health examination data of the disabled were collected from Shanghai Sunshine Rehabilitation Center from January 2011 to August 2014,and from Shanghai Training Center of Vocation and Rehabilitation from January 2013 to June 2014 ( 61 969 in the former institution and 31 298 in the latter) . The basic demographic information,disability type,and physical examination data were primarily collected,and the detection status of disease,positive signs and abnormal indicators in laboratory of the disabled were calculated and analyzed. Results Among the 93 267 disabled persons,the top 3 types of disability were limbs disability(49. 71% ,46 361 / 93 267),visual disability (21. 09% ,19 672 / 93 267),and mental disability(12. 89% ,12 021 / 93 267). The top 3 detection rate of diseases were fatty liver(38. 22% ,21 877 / 57 243 ),fundus atherosclerosis( 37. 37% ,28 153 / 75 336 ) and pharyngitis( 31. 90% , 14 716 / 46 126);the top 3 detection rate of positive signs were high blood pressure(44. 23% ,40 853 / 92 364),increased and thickened lung markings(43. 04% ,33 539 / 77 928)and overweight(35. 43% ,32 276 / 91 097)respectively;the top 3 detection rate of abnormal indexes in laboratory were urine specific gravity(34. 83% ,27 007 / 77 524),red cell distribution width( 31. 32% , 28 939 / 92 389 ), and the amount of basophilic granulocyte ( 30. 53% , 24 710 / 80 941 ) respectively. Conclusion The health status of the disabled in Shanghai is poor and complex. It is suggested that the relevant departments should pay more attention to the status of the disabled so as to achieve the standardization health information collection of the disabled.
