Toward Recognition: The Development of Professional Social Work in China

Abstract:Applying the recognition theory,this article discusses the issue of social work development in China. Based on the conceptual framework of recognition subjectivity,inter-subjectivity relationship and recognition community,the article reveals the content and forms of social work recognition by the government and the social work community. A general framework of recognition is further proposed and the article argues that the shift from formative recognition to substantive recognition is the fundamental direction of social work development. Recognition of social work reflects the differences between social work community and government as well as their collaborative recognition relationship. Analyzing the recognition relationship from the perspective of "responsibility community"and "functional community"is a valuable attempt in applying the recognition theory. In the practical orientation of promoting social work development,this article signifies the responsibility of government within the recognition relationship and also emphasizes the issue of self-recognition by the social work community. Perhaps the latter would bring fourth new ideas to the use of recognition theory.
