Abstract:Objective: Enamel matrix proteins (EMPs) has been clinically used to promote periodontal tissue regeneration. The purpose of the present study is to clarify EMPs affects on bone regeneration in skull defect of diabetic rats. Methods:EMPs were extracted from porcine tooth germs and analysed, the vehicle of which is propylene glycol alginate(PGA).Full thickness cranial plate defects at a diameter of 5mm was created on both sides of the skull of diabetic rats which was induced by Streptozotocin(STZ).The complex of BMPs(10mg/ml)and PGA(the experiment side)and only PGA(the control side)were implanted into the defects of rats. After 4 weeks and 8 weeks postoperatively, the rats were sacrificed and the specimen were examined by X-ray and histological examination. Results: X-ray results showed that compared with the control side, experiment side was no significant difference.Histology showed that the defect verge of the experiment side existed more osteoblast than the control side, but the amount of new bone was no significant difference. Conclusion: The effect of EMPs(10mg/ml) on bone regeneration in skull defect of diabetic rats was little, and the concentration of EMPs and/or whether or not EMPs works need us to further study.
