Abstract:Objective: To provide basis for the further research and treatment of allergic rhinitis by studying the characteristic of syndrome differentiation and therapeutic methods of TCM on this disease.Methods: On basis of some criteria,literatures on allergic rhinitis treated by traditional Chinese medicine in recent years(2005.1-2011.4) from Wan Fang Data Base were collected and analyzed by spss 13.0.Results: In all chosen literatures,lung-qi deficiency occupies the largest perception in the syndrome differentiation.Other main syndrome types are deficiency of lung-qi and spleen-qi;deficiency of lung-qi,spleen-qi and kidney-qi;Kidney-yang deficiency;syndrome of wind-cold invasion of lung and so on.The exterior-releasing medicinal and tonic medicinal are most frequently prescribed herbs,and in addition,other types of herbs are also prescribed at the same time in order to get the best curative effect.In all the herbs listed in this research,Astragalus among the most popular drugs.Conclusion: The study provides the basis for the further research and treatment of allergic rhinitis.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the development regularity, research status and future research hotspots of chronic pulmonary heart disease treated with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in recent 10 years by visual analysis of CiteSpace software. Methods: The relevant literatures on the treatment of chronic pulmonary heart disease with traditional Chinese medicine published from 2014 to 2023 in the CNKI database were searched, and the number of documents issued, authors, institutions, and keywords of the included literatures were analyzed using CiteSpace software, and the knowledge map was drawn. Results: After screening, 683 articles were included and 262 authors were included, and Jun Liu and Zhengping Bai were the authors with the largest number of documents issued; A total of 244 research institutions were included, represented by Hunan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine; through co-occurrence analysis of keywords, the frequency of efficacy was the highest; keywords were clustered to form a total of 10 cluster labels; To highlight the keywords, cardiopulmonary function is always a research hotspot in this field, and quality of life, acupoint application, medication rules, and data mining may be future research hotspots in this field. Conclusion: At present, the research on the treatment of cor pulmonale with traditional Chinese medicine is in the bottleneck stage. It is recommended that researchers and institutions strengthen cooperation, carry out high-quality research, give play to the advantages of the motherland medicine, and promote the development of traditional Chinese medicine in this field.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a chronic lung dysfunction disease with a poor prognosis and poor recovery. The clinically used therapeutic drugs, such as glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants, have no significant therapeutic effect and are accompanied with severe side effects. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in exploring and applying natural herb components for treating ILD. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) possesses innate, non-toxic characteristics and offers advantages in preventing and treating pulmonary ailments. However, a comprehensive study of TCM on ILD therapy has not yet been reviewed. Aim of the review: This review aimed to provide a comprehensive summary of the monomer components, total extracts, and prescriptions of TCM for ILD therapy, elucidating their molecular mechanisms to serve as a reference in treating ILD. Materials and methods: The literature information was searched in the PubMed, Web of Science databases. The search keywords included 'interstitial lung disease', 'lung fibrosis' or 'pulmonary fibrosis', and 'traditional Chinese medicine', 'traditional herbal medicine', or 'herb medicine'. Results: The active components of single herbs, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenols, and quinones, have potential therapeutic effects on ILD. The active extracts and prescriptions were also summarized and analyzed. The herbs, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. (Gancao), Astragalus membranaceus Fisch. Bunge. (Huangqi) and Angelicasinensis (Oliv.) Diels (Danggui), play significant roles in the treatment of ILD. The mechanisms involve the inhibition of inflammatory factor release, anti-oxidative injury, and interference with collagen production, etc. CONCLUSION: This review examines the therapeutic potential of TCM for ILD and elucidates its molecular mechanisms, demonstrating that mitigating inflammation and oxidative stress, modulating the immune system, and promoting tissue repair are efficacious strategies for ILD therapy. The depth research will yield both theoretical and practical implications.

Abstract:This article systematically reviews the clinical researches on properties of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) since the building up of our country.There are a lot of problems in this subject although preliminary conclusions have been obtained from the researches on properties of TCM in the elds of central nervous system,endocrine system,energy metabolism,immune system and hemorheology.Through deep thoughts of the ideas and methods on clinical researches,it is suggested by the author that the clinical researches on properties of TCM should be integrated with the researches on essence of coldness and hotness of syndrome and integrated with experiments.We also need establish the system of objective evaluation methods and indexes,and proceed dynamic researches on properties of TCM according to the dynamic changes of diseases.

Abstract:The lungs are a principal factor in the increased morbidity and mortality observed in patients with Connective Tissue Disease (CTD), frequently presenting as CTD-associated Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD). Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive descriptions of the pulmonary cells implicated in the development of CTD-ILD. This review leverages the Human Lung Cell Atlas (HLCA) and spatial multi-omics atlases to discuss the advancements in research on the pathogenesis of CTD-ILD from a pulmonary cell perspective. This facilitates a more precise localization of disease sites and a more systematic consideration of disease progression, supporting further mechanistic studies and targeted therapies.
Global research status and trends of interactions between Traditional Chinese medicine and pulmonary fibrosis: A new dawn in treatment

Abstract:Background: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) remains a major sequela of COVID-19, yet its pharmacotherapy remains unsatisfactory. Recently, Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has garnered increasing recognition among patients and researchers because of its few side effects and efficacy. The objective of this study is to use bibliometric analysis to explore the current research landscape and emerging trajectories of TCM treating PF(TCM/PF) researches, and comprehensively evaluate publications with substantial citations within the domain of TCM/PF. Materials and methods: TCM/PF publications from 1996 to June 15, 2023 were identified by a comprehensive search of the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). The Bibliometrix of Origin, CiteSpace, Gephi, dycharts and VOSviewer were used for bibliometric analysis. Results: A total of 358 papers were included. A rapid increase in the number of papers after 2013 was observed. China had the highest publication output and research contributions in this field. Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicineare leaders in productive research of this field. Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine had the highest citations (227). LI JIANSHENG from Henan University of Chinese Medicine was the most prolific author (8), with the highest number of citations (61), and TONG XIAO LIN from China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences had the highest H-index (30). The leading journal publishing the most research (37) is Frontiers in Pharmacology and the Journal of Ethnopharmacology had the highest total citations (486). Burst analysis of keywords revealed three distinct phases of research. 1996 to 2013 marked the nascent stage of TCM/PF research; from 2014 to 2018, studies gradually focused on the underlying mechanisms governing TCM/PF. The most significant phase occurred from 2019 onward, where TCM/PF exhibited an explosive growth trend. This progression signifies a transition from foundational explorations to a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms involved, ultimately leading to the current surge in research activities focused on TCM/PF. Notable research teams of this stage, led by LI JIAN SHENG and TONG XIAO LIN, have been at the forefront of advancing TCM/PF research. Their studies on Jinshui Huanxian formula and Qimai Feiluoping decoction have been pivotal in advancing the frontier of research in this domain. Furthermore, the monomeric compounds, including emodin, curcumin, salvianolic acid, baicalin, and oxymatrine, have sustained longstanding prominence. Conclusions: This study gained insight into the research status, focal areas and evolving trends of global TCM/PF research. It also identified the most cited articles in TCM/PF and analyzed their characteristics, which may hold significant relevance for both clinical researchers and practitioners on future directions in this field.

Abstract:Pulmonary fibrosis is a kind of intractable disease threatening human health in the respiratory system, which heavily affects life quality of patients. The current Western medicine in clinical drug treatment still does not have significant efficacy, with adverse reactions. In recent years, TCM has shown unique advantages in pulmonary fibrosis models of animals experimental study. This article reviewed the research progress in molecular mechanism of TCM for the protection and treatment of pulmonary fibrosis, discussed its action targets, and provide references for the clinical research and treatment of pulmonary fibrosis.

Abstract:Objective Interstitial lung disease in children represents a heterogeneous group of disorders of both known and unknown causes.This study aimed to understand better the causes of the disease in children and to provide information on the current approach to diagnosis and management of the disease.Method Through the Pediatric Diffuse Parenchymal Lung Disease/Pediatric Interstitial Lung Disease Cooperative Group of China,data of 93 cases of interstitial lung disease of children from 11 hospitals werecollected with the same questionnaire in 2009.Respiratory tract secretions were obtained for bacterial culture.Respiratory virus antigen examination,mycoplasma antibody,EB virus,cytomegalovirus,and herpes simplex viruses antibody detection were performed.Cells in the sputum,gastric juice and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF) were tested for hemosiderin.The CT or high resolution CT (HRCT) of the lung and blood- gas analysis were also performed.Fourteen cases underwent lung biopsy and 25 cases underwent bronchomicrocopy.Data were then pooled and discussed through a series of meetings.Result Fifty-three cases were male,40 were female and their age ranged from 8 months to 14 years.Thirty-nine cases were diagnosed as bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) ;39 as idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis (IPH) ;7 as idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP) of unknown causes,of whom 4 cases had non specific interstitial pneumonia,1 case as acute interstitial pneumonia and 1 case as lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia,1 case as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis;2 cases as secondary interstitial lung disease,one was secondary to SLE,one to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection; 2 cases had hypersensitive pneumonitis; 2 cases had pulmonary alveolar proteinosis; 1 case had bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia; 1 case had lipoid pneumonia ; 1 case of diffuse panbronchiolitis; 1 case of microlithiasis alveolaris pulmonum.Forty two cases had cough,24 of them also had tachypnea,8 cases had clubbing.HRCT showed that 56 cases had groundglass-like opacification;30 cases had mosaic appearance;1case had diffuse micronodular opacities,1 case had diffuse reticulonodular opacities and cysts.Conclusion Interstitial lung disease in children is a heterogeneous group of disorders.In this study diagnoses of 11 diseases were made,the top third diagnoses were BO,IPH and IIP,respectively.

Abstract:Lung cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors in the world, ranking the first cause of death. In recent years, the incidence and mortality of patients with lung cancer have increased significantly. Western medicine generally adopts traditional treatment methods such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but there are inevitable adverse reactions and side effects in all of them, and new treatment methods are urgently needed to control its development. With the continuous improvement of medical technology, immunotherapy has gradually flourished in the medical field. Traditional Chinese medicine can achieve the purpose of tumor treatment by regulating the tumor immune microenvironment. This paper explores the mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of lung cancer from the etiology, pathogenesis and the role of traditional Chinese medicine in lung cancer immunity, and puts forward new ideas to provide reference for clinical practice.

Abstract:ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death globally and thus imposes heavy economic burden on patients, their families, and society. Furthermore, COPD seriously affects the quality of life of patients. The concept of "overall regulation" of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of COPD.AIM OF THE STUDY: The objective of this review is to summarize the TCM theories, experimental methods, TCM extracts, active TCM ingredients, and TCM formulas for the treatment of COPD and reveal the effects and mechanisms of TCM treatments on COPD.MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article reviewed literature on TCM-based treatments for COPD reported from 2016 to 2021. Relevant scientific studies were obtained from databases that included PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Web of Science, Google Scholar, The Plant List, ScienceDirect, and SciFinder.RESULTS: This review summarized TCM-based theory, experimental methods, active ingredients, and potential toxicities, the effects of TCM extracts and formulations, and their mechanisms for the treatment of COPD. Most investigators have used in vivo models of cigarette smoke combined with lipopolysaccharide induction in rats and in vitro models of cigarette smoke extract induction. The active ingredients of TCM used for the treatment of COPD in relevant studies were triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenolics, quinones, glycosides, and alkaloids. TCMs commonly used in the treatment of COPD include antipyretic drugs, tonic medicines, anticough medications, and asthma medications. TCM can treat COPD by suppressing inflammation, reducing oxidative stress, inhibiting apoptosis, and improving airway remodeling.CONCLUSIONS: This review enriches the theory of COPD treatments based on TCM, established the clinical significance and development prospects of TCM-based COPD treatments, and provided the necessary theoretical support for the further development of TCM resources for the treatment of COPD.

Abstract:Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma have common characteristics both in terms of their pathology and clinical symptoms, but whether they share the same traditional Chinese medicine syndromes (TCMS) is unclear. This study compared the distribution of TCMS for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma by using a large data set of clinical records which would reflect real world practice. Methods: Electronic medical records were used from five hospitals in China between 2012 and 2016. A total of 26,074 subjects with complete medical records were available for data analysis. Frequencies and multinomial logistic regressions (LR) were conducted to determine independent and significant TCMS associated with COPD or asthma compared to a shared reference of other respiratory diseases. Bivariate association analyses were conducted to estimate shared TCMS for the two diseases by using general linear model. Results: Multinomial LR showed that Tan_Re_Yong_Fei was independently and significantly associated with both COPD and asthma (P < 0.001 for both). Similarly, Fei_Shen_Qi_Xu had a significant, independent, and respective association with the two diseases (P < 0.001 for both). Bivariate associated analyses indicated that the Shi TCMS (excess syndrome) of Tan_Re_Yong_Fei was associated with the two diseases (P < 0.001) and Xu TCMS (deficiency syndrome) of Fei_Shen_Qi_Xu was associated with both outcomes (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The shared core Shi TCMS (excess syndrome) for both COPD and asthma was Tan_Re_Yong_Fei, and the shared core Xu TCMS (deficiency syndrome) was Fei_Shen_Qi_Xu.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) is the effective therapy for respiratory virus infections, which is the better practice among clinical decision-makings. As the differences in understanding of airway infection disease, medical practices of TCM in different periods have different performance characteristics and problems in the clinical application and related scientific research fields. In this paper, we open up a further discussion on these commonness and personality problems in the practice of medicine which respiratory viral infection diseases are prevented and treated by TCM, thereby being able to grasp the changing rule of the medical practice. Moreover, the strengths and weaknesses of anti-virus by TCM were further analyzed to use TCM to prevention and treatment of airway infection diseases reasonably.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has saved countless lives and maintained human health over its long history, especially in respiratory infectious diseases. The relationship between the intestinal flora and the respiratory system has been a popular research topic in recent years. According to the theory of the "gut-lung axis" in modern medicine and the idea that "the lung stands in an interior-exterior relationship with the large intestine" in TCM, gut microbiota dysbiosis is a contributing factor to respiratory infectious diseases, and there is potential means for manipulation of the gut microbiota in the treatment of lung diseases. Emerging studies have indicated intestinal Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) overgrowth in multiple respiratory infectious diseases, which could exacerbate respiratory infectious diseases by disrupting immune homeostasis, the gut barrier and metabolic balance. TCM is an effective microecological regulator, that can regulate the intestinal flora including E. coli , and restore the balance of the immune system, gut barrier, and metabolism. Aim of the review This review discusses the changes and effects of intestinal E. coli in respiratory infection, as well as the role of TCM in the intestinal flora, E. coli and related immunity, the gut barrier and the metabolism, thereby suggesting the possibility of TCM therapy regulating intestinal E. coli and related immunity, the gut barrier and the metabolism to alleviate respiratory infectious diseases. We aimed to make a modest contribution to the research and development of new therapies for intestinal flora in respiratory infectious diseases and the full utilization of TCM resources. Relevant information about the therapeutic potential of TCM to regulate intestinal E. coli against diseases was collected from PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and so on. The Plants of the World Online ( https://wcsp.science.kew.org ) and the Plant List ( www.theplantlist.org ) databases were used to provide the scientific names and species of plants. Results Intestinal E. coli is a very important bacterium in respiratory infectious diseases that affects the respiratory system through immunity, the gut barrier and the metabolism. Many TCMs can inhibit the abundance of E. coli and regulate related immunity, the gut barrier and the metabolism to promote lung health. Conclusion TCM targeting intestinal E. coli and related immune, gut barrier, and metabolic dysfunction could be a potential therapy to promote the treatment and prognosis of respiratory infectious diseases.

Abstract:Interactions between the components of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and the intestinal microenvironment are a key to TCM effectiveness.Studies investigating the complex relationship among TCM components, intestinal microenvironment, and enterocytes are vital for elucidating the effective substances of TCM and the mechanisms underlying their activities.With the development of theories and techniques across multiple disciplines, particularly the emergence of herb genomics, investigation into the interactions between TCM components and intestinal microenvironment has evolved from the biotransformation of components and regulation of flora structure and immunity into a study at the gene level, which involves structural and functional genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, epigenomics, and metagenomics.This review summarizes the research progress in terms of the scope of TCM and proposes areas for future studies.

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Schistosomiasis, caused by infection with organisms of the Schistoma genus, is a parasitic and infectious disease that poses a significant risk to human health. Schistosomiasis has been a widespread issue in China for at least 2000 years. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a rich history of treating this disease, and the significant theoretical and practical knowledge attained therein may be useful in modern practice. Aim of the study: To comprehensively review TCM for the treatment of schistosomiasis, summarize the molecular basis, mechanism of action, active ingredients and formulas of TCM, and clarify the value of TCM for expanding drug options for the clinical treatment of schistosomiasis. Materials and methods: In PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar and CNKI databases, "Schistosomiasis", "Schistosoma mansoni", "Schistosoma japonicum", "Liver fibrosis" and "Granuloma" were used as the key words. Information related to in vivo animal studies and clinical studies of TCM for the treatment of schistosomiasis in the past 25 years was retrieved, and the inclusion criteria focused on medicinal plants that had a history of use in China. Results: In this study, we collected and organized a large amount of literature on the treatment of schistosomiasis by TCM. TCM exerts therapeutic effects through antischistosomal and immunomodulatory effects, suppresses HSC activation and proliferation, reduces ECM deposition, and inhibits oxidative stress and other activities. The treatment of schistosomiasis by TCM has a unique advantage, especially for the treatment of schistosomal liver fibrosis, and the treatment of schistosomiasis with TCM in combination with praziquantel is superior to monotherapy. Conclusion: Schistosomiasis remains a global public health problem, and TCM has made significant progress in the prevention and treatment of schistosomiasis and is a potential source of drugs for the treatment of schistosomiasis. However, research on drug screening and the mechanism of action of TCM for the treatment of schistosomiasis is lacking, and further studies and research are needed.

Abstract:Lung cancer stands as one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide, bearing the highest morbidity and mortality rates among all malignant tumors. The treatment of lung cancer primarily encompasses surgical procedures, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, which are fraught with significant side effects, unfavorable prognoses, and a heightened risk of metastasis and relapse. Although targeted therapy and immunotherapy have gradually gained prominence in lung cancer treatment, diversifying the array of available methods, the overall recovery and survival rates for lung cancer patients remain suboptimal. Presently, with a holistic approach and a focus on syndrome differentiation and treatment, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has emerged as a pivotal player in the prognosis of cancer patients. TCM possesses characteristics such as targeting multiple aspects, addressing a wide range of concerns, and minimizing toxic side effects. Research demonstrates that Traditional Chinese Medicine can significantly contribute to the treatment or serve as an adjunct to chemotherapy for lung cancer and other lung-related diseases. This is achieved through mechanisms like inhibiting tumor cell proliferation, inducing tumor cell apoptosis, suppressing tumor angiogenesis, influencing the cellular microenvironment, regulating immune system function, impacting signal transduction pathways, and reversing multidrug resistance in tumor cells. In this article, we offer an overview of the advancements in research concerning Traditional Chinese Medicine extracts for the treatment or adjunctive chemotherapy of lung cancer and other lung-related conditions. Furthermore, we delve into the challenges that Traditional Chinese Medicine extracts face in lung cancer treatment, laying the foundation for the development of diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic targets.

Abstract:"Syndrome"and"Treating different diseases with same method",which are important concepts in Traditional Chinese Medicine ( TCM) ,have profound meanings and are widely used in clinical practice. Chronic inflammatory diseases such as asthma,chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and atopic dermatitis have some similarities in terms of pathogenesis and intervention methods. However, current treatments for these diseases have limitations. According to the theory of TCM,these diseases are usually identified as syndrome "Kidney deficiency"or"Qi deficiency",therefore,treated with the method"strengthening Kidney and replenishing Qi". This is in line with the thought of"Use similar method to treat different diseases as identical syndrome". Strengthening Kidney and replenishing Qi is proved to be effective treatment,based on our preliminary work,this is because strengthening kidney have an impact on HPAA and replenishing Qi on immunity system,and correct abnormal relations. The research proved a synergistic effect between strengthening Shen and replenishing Qi herbs.
