Abstract:In order to achieve the sustainable development, the predictive mechanism with big data-driven Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodology is proposed in this paper. The sustainable development for serious competition is often studied, however, the predictive mechanism with big data-driven Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodology is seldom mentioned in publications. This paper reports the predictive mechanism from the perspective of big data-driven Lean Manufacturing. The key techniques including PLC communication, DMAIC roadmap, SPC technique and Hypothesis Testing are utilized to eliminate the waste and obtain continuous improvement. The demonstration of calculator production indicates the predictive mechanism can effectively eliminate the waste and improve the output by 60% with the sufficient capability of Cp > 1.33 and Cpk > 1.

Abstract:Laboratory safety is a major part in laboratory management.However,students lack of safety awareness in experiment has become potential safety risks in laboratories.In order to foster the students safety awareness,it is proposed in this paper that safety management in laboratories should be brought into the category of Lean Six Sigma. According to the 5S management in Lean Six Sigma,the risks in laboratories were analyzed,and reform was conducted using the technology of Lean Six Sigma.In addition,the Lean Six Sigma safety management in laboratories was verified in engineering laboratories in colleges and universities,which demonstrated that the application of Lean Six Sigma in safety management in laboratories was practical and effective in colleges and universities.

Based on the definition and connotation of six Sigma, this paper sorts out and summarizes the specific application of six Sigma management theory and method in the industry, and focuses on the research and application of six Sigma management theory in the service industry. Through the above analysis, Six Sigma has achieved remarkable results in improving service quality and customer satisfaction, but it also faces some challenges.

Abstract:While Six Sigma is increasingly implemented in industry, little academic research has been done on Six Sigma and its influence on quality management theory and application. There is a criticism that Six Sigma simply puts traditional quality management practices in a new package. To investigate this issue and the role of Six Sigma in quality management, this study reviewed both the traditional quality management and Six Sigma literatures and identified three new practices that are critical for implementing Six Sigma's concept and method in an organization. These practices are referred to as: Six Sigma role structure, Six Sigma structured improvement procedure, and Six Sigma focus on metrics. A research model and survey instrument were developed to investigate how these Six Sigma practices integrate with seven traditional quality management practices to affect quality performance and business performance. Test results based on a sample of 226 US manufacturing plants revealed that the three Six Sigma practices are distinct practices from traditional quality management practices, and that they complement the traditional quality management practices in improving performance. The implications of the findings for researchers and practitioners are discussed and further research directions are offered.

Abstract:After a product has undergone a manufacturing process, it usually has several important quality characteristics. When the process quality of all quality characteristics meets the requirements of the quality level, the process quality of the product can be guaranteed to satisfy customers’ needs. A large number of studies have pointed out that good process quality can raise product yield and product value; at the same time, it can reduce the ratio of rework and scrap, achieve the effect of energy saving and waste reduction, and contribute to the sustainable operation of enterprises as well the environment. Since the six sigma method combines the statistical analysis method of manufacturing cost and production data, it is a useful tool for process improvement and process quality enhancement. Therefore, this paper adopted the six sigma-define, measure, analyze, improve and control (DMAIC) improvement process to lift the manufacturing process quality of multi-characteristic products. Besides, the Taguchi process capability index is one of the commonly used tools for quality assessment in the industry. Not only can it reflect the process loss, but it also can ensure the process yield when the index value is large enough. Consequently, this paper discussed the relationship between the Taguchi process capability index and the six sigma quality level. Meanwhile, the entire six sigma DMAIC improvement process was built on the basis of the process capability index and developed by the method of statistical quality control. Hence, the proposed method is very convenient for process engineers to apply, as well as is helpful for enterprises to move toward the goal of smart manufacturing and sustainability.

Abstract:The effectiveness and efficiency of the internal business process of an enterprise are closely associated with its information system. The performance of an information system depends on its complete integration with the different departments of an organisation. This study attempts to simulate Six Sigma and offer the improvement methods of Six Sigma: DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, and Control) to the case company in order to provide it with a strategic solution involving information systems integration to manage and/or improve the performance of the production planning procedure. After an analysis of the five phases of Six Sigma, the performance of the production planning procedure actually improved through information systems integration. However, for the planning operation, if the back-end test plant and front-end client information system can be further involved in the structure of information systems integration, the performance of the production planning procedure could be reinforced even further. This study uses questionnaires to evaluate/assess the Six Sigma DMAIC method and offers useful suggestions to the case company.

Abstract:Introduction: In an increasingly competitive manufacturing sector, companies are adopting innovative approaches, such as the Lean Six Sigma methodology, to enhance their operations, competitiveness, and sustainability. This study explores the effect of Lean Six Sigma methodology and data-driven decision-making on sustainable manufacturing practices. Methods: The study employs thematic analysis to clarify and identify principle nodes and themes, including Six Sigma, quality improvement, management approaches, and front-line worker perspectives. The analysis aims to deepen understanding of Lean Six Sigma principles and their implications for sustainable manufacturing practices. Results: The analysis identifies employee motivation, balanced scorecards, company culture, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and data-driven decision-making as key drivers of sustainable manufacturing practices. Evidence suggests that implementing Lean Six Sigma methodology, promoting data-driven decision-making, and nurturing a positive company culture enhances environmental performance in the manufacturing industry. Discussion: The findings indicate that Lean Six Sigma, data-driven decision-making, and a positive company culture are effective strategies to enhance sustainability in manufacturing, offering valuable insights for companies seeking to improve sustainability while maintaining competitiveness. This study underlines the potential of Lean Six Sigma as a cornerstone of sustainable manufacturing practices.

Abstract:Worldwide, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have been accepted as the engine of economic growth, especially in the emerging economies, and for promoting equitable development their contribution as a component to nation's infrastructure is relatively high. Global competition forces SMEs to improve their competitiveness by enhancing their manufacturing performance. Hence, they have to pay attention to the reliability of their production processes as well as their commitment to quality management practices. In present times, because of automation and large‐scale mechanization, higher plant availability, better product quality and longer equipment life had assumed considerable significance among the SMEs. In order to meet the above challenges, adoption and practice of proactive maintenance strategies along with execution of best management practices, i.e. lean Six Sigma (LSS), has become essential for organizations to bring down maintenance and production costs. As evident from literature, both total productive maintenance (TPM) and Six Sigma are key business process strategies employed by SMEs to enhance their manufacturing performance. However, whilst there is significant research information available on implementing these systems in an independent manner, there is little information available relating to the integration of these approaches to provide a unified and highly effective implementation framework. The purpose of this paper is thus to develop an integrated model based on Six Sigma and TPM framework focusing on adding performance indicators. The goals of the study were achieved by utilizing various tools such as ‘brainstorming sessions, pareto analysis fish‐bone diagrams, histograms, FMEA, box plots, control charts and process capability plots for analysis’. While implementation of such twin framework requires greater management commitment in terms of training, resources and integration, they are also expected to provide higher levels of equipment and plant performance as evident from the results. The results show significant improvement in OEE level (Before 50, 54 and after 76, 83 for M/C –I and M/c‐II), reduction in rework (from 22% to 10%), reduction in maintenance versus operation cost (from 30% to 10%) and reduction in defect rate (from 24.82% to 5%) and average outgoing quality level (from 30% to 5%). The substantial improvement in sigma level from 2.16 and 2.64 to 4.01 and 4.12 for M/C –I and M/C‐II resulted in financial savings of approximately $2 m per annum. Abstract:The Lean Six Sigma / LSS approach has received a lot of attention in various industrial sectors, from the manufacturing industry to the service industry. More specific knowledge about Lean Six Sigma has grown rapidly. Much of the training and research on Lean Six Sigma is carried out in various industries. This literature review is related to LSS's purpose to provide an overview of Lean Six Sigma implementation in the manufacturing industry. The Lean Six Sigma approach introduced and implemented for a long time is DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and control). This paper discusses the published literature related to Six Sigma ranging from 2015 to 2020. This paper involves the study review of 50 papers related to the implementation of LSS of known database search, including Google Scholar, Elsevier, Science Direct, and other worldwide publishers. This literature review contains results from a variety of different perspectives. The perspective includes the focus of the industry, the focus of the number of distribution by country, the focus of the year of publication, and the number of publishers. This is useful for all types of manufacturing industries to find solutions to problems. The paper also provides advantages for researchers next to add to the literature.

Abstract:Purpose– Quantitative methods, especially statistical methods, play an increasingly important role in research of library and information science (LIS). For different journals, the uses of statistical methods vary substantially due to different journal scopes and aims. The purpose of this paper is to explore the characteristics of statistical methodology uses in six major scholarly journals in LIS.Design/methodology/approach– Research papers that used statistical methods from the six major journals were selected and investigated. Content analysis method, descriptive statistical analysis method, and temporal analysis method were used to compare and analyze statistical method uses in research papers of the investigated journals.Findings– The findings of this study show that there was a clear growth trend of statistical method uses in five of the investigated journals; statistical methods were used most inThe Journal of the Association for Information Science and TechnologyandInformation Processing & Management; and the top three most frequently used statistical methods weret-test, ANOVA test, andχ2-test.Originality/value– The findings can be used to better understand the application areas, patterns, and trends of statistical methods among the investigated journals and their statistical methodology orientations in research studies of LIS.

Abstract:Lean Six Sigma is an integrated approach between lean thinking and the Six Sigma method. Lean is a way of thinking and principle used to improve the performance of a process through waste and error elimination. It focuses on the speed, flow, and cost of a process. On the other hand, Six Sigma is a method to enhance process capability by analyzing processes with problem identification and implementing improvements to resolve the problem. It focuses on quality consistency and how to fulfill customers' requirements. Combined, Lean and Six Sigma will be beneficial for organizations in determining the most suitable method for identifying and solving problems so the outcome of a process can fulfill customer satisfaction until profits can be increased. This study proposes a Lean Six Sigma methodology as an approach to reduce waste in the production process of a food manufacturing industry. The proposed approach is the DMAIC approach, and its tools are used to assess the impact of waste on the production process. As a result, this study will also conclude how the DMAIC approach can be helpful for the company to reduce waste. Suggestions related to DMAIC tools, and their implementation are also elaborated so that the related company can evaluate its current process and strive for better improvement.

Abstract:Lean Six Sigma is a data-driven and fact-based philosophy which helps to prevent the value defects over the detection of defects for better quality and improvements. Lean Six Sigma helps in achieving satisfaction of customer and core results by reducing waste, altering or variation in process, process cycle time, by the use of standardisation and flow and thus creates the competitive advantage for organisations. Lean Six Sigma is applicable at the place where variation and waste exist, and all employee or company staff should be involved. Lean Six Sigma is a combination of ‘Lean’ and ‘Six Sigma’. Six Sigma helps to reduce the process variation whereas Lean helps to eliminate or reduce waste. Thereby, the principles of Lean Six Sigma help to improve the efficiency and quality of the process. Abstract:The product pilot run is the key link between new product design readiness and production launch. The goal of new product pilot run is to set up the production capability with quality control before new product's volume deployed. Though Six Sigma Methodology is well known in mass production, it is seldom applied to product pilot run. This paper presents the application of Six Sigma Methodology in the traditional pilot run. The key techniques including DMAIC, Cause-and-Effect Diagrams, design of experiments (DOE) and Statistical Process Control (SPC) are utilized to reduce the process variability, improve the capability and obtain the stable quality control for power meter pilot run, which indicates Six Sigma is useful for pilot run to get the new product ready for mass production.

Abstract:Quality is a key determinant in deploying new processes, products, or services and influences the adoption of emerging manufacturing technologies. The advent of additive manufacturing (AM) as a manufacturing process has the potential to revolutionize a host of enterprise-related functions from production to the supply chain. The unprecedented level of design flexibility and expanded functionality offered by AM, coupled with greatly reduced lead times, can potentially pave the way for mass customization. However, widespread application of AM is currently hampered by technical challenges in process repeatability and quality management. The breakthrough effect of six sigma (6S) has been demonstrated in traditional manufacturing industries (e.g., semiconductor and automotive industries) in the context of quality planning, control, and improvement through the intensive use of data, statistics, and optimization. 6S entails a data-driven DMAIC methodology of five steps-define, measure, analyze, improve, and control. Notwithstanding the sustained successes of the 6S knowledge body in a variety of established industries ranging from manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and beyond, there is a dearth of concentrated application of 6S quality management approaches in the context of AM. In this article, we propose to design, develop, and implement the new DMAIC methodology for the 6S quality management of AM. First, we define the specific quality challenges arising from AM layerwise fabrication and mass customization (even one-of-a-kind production). Second, we present a review of AM metrology and sensing techniques, from materials through design, process, and environment, to postbuild inspection. Third, we contextualize a framework for realizing the full potential of data from AM systems and emphasize the need for analytical methods and tools. We propose and delineate the utility of new data-driven analytical methods, including deep learning, machine learning, and network science, to characterize and model the interrelationships between engineering design, machine setting, process variability, and final build quality. Fourth, we present the methodologies of ontology analytics, design of experiments (DOE), and simulation analysis for AM system improvements. In closing, new process control approaches are discussed to optimize the action plans, once an anomaly is detected, with specific consideration of lead time and energy consumption. We posit that this work will catalyze more in-depth investigations and multidisciplinary research efforts to accelerate the application of 6S quality management in AM.
