Abstract:Objective Our previous study suggested that myopia could be induced in mice by early exposure to light. In the present study we use this model to investigate the expression of TH andbFGFin the retinae of mice so as to explore the mechanism of premature myopia. Methods C57BL/6J mice were used to establish the model of premature myopia. The mice were raised in a conventional laboratory environment untilnatural eye opening (postnatal day 14, P14) after the right eyelids were separated by operation at P4. The refraction of both eyes was checked at P14. Then, the eyes were enucleated and used to observe the expression of TH and bFGF in retinae by RT-PCR and Immunohistochemistry. Results Myopia was induced in the right eye, and the degree of relative myopia was-9.77±0.09 D. TH was primarily distributed in the ganglion cell layer, inner plexiform and inner nuclear layer, and bFGF was primarily distributed in some ganglion cells, the inner plexiform and the adjacent inner nuclear cells. The quantities of TH and bFGF in the retinae of the right eyes were decreased when compared with those in the contralateral control left eyes. Conclusion Early exposure to light can induce myopia. TH and bFGF may participate in the modulation process of myopia.
