Abstract:We present XSeek, a keyword search engine that enables users to easily access XML data without the need of learning XPath or XQuery and studying possibly complex data schemas. XSeek addresses a challenge in XML keyword search that has been neglected in the literature: how to determine the desired return information, analogous to inferring a "return" clause in XQuery. To infer the search semantics, XSeek recognizes possible entities and attributes in the data, differentiates search predicates and return specifications in the keywords, and generates meaningful search results based on the analysis.

Abstract:Keyword search has already been a user-friendly method used to retrieve XML data. Unlike text data, XML contain rich semantics, which should be utilized to improve the quality of search results. In XML data, the same value with different semantics would have different meanings. Based on an in-depth analysis of XML structural semantics, we propose the conception of path semantics, which contains the whole semantics of the leaf value. To identify the path semantics, we measure the remarkableness of the path to XML documents and the relevant between the leaf values and the path. Then, we design the ranking strategy for XML keyword search. Final experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed ranking schema. © 2013 by Binary Information Press.

Abstract:The objective of this chapter is to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art in supporting keyword search on XML data, outline the problem space in this area, introduce representative techniques that address different aspects of the problem, and discuss further challenges and promising directions for future work. The problem spectrum that will be covered in this chapter ranges from identifying relevant keyword matches and an axiomatic framework to evaluate different strategies, identifying other relevant data nodes, ranking, indexes and materialized views, to result snippet generation.

Abstract:Top-k processing in XML keyword search could help to return the top k most relevant results efficiently. Structural semantics in XML databases is an important factor to be considered for ranking search results. In this paper, we investigate how to efficiently retrieve top-k XML search results based on their structural semantics. We first propose relevance measures for different aspects of structural semantics basing on the tree structure. Unfortunately, not all structural semantics can be got before executing queries, which is a challenge for top-k processing. To address this challenge, we then adopt optimum value of unknown structural semantics to estimate the threshold in top-k processing. Finally, we achieve top-k processing in XML keyword search with considering the structural semantics. The effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithm is demonstrated with a comprehensive experimental performance study. Copyright © 2011 Binary Information Press.

Abstract:It has become desirable to provide a way of keyword search for users to query structured information in an XML database (data-centric retrieval) by combining database and information retrieval techniques. Therefore, the key challenges of keyword search in the XML database are how to define appropriate result models meeting user's search intents, how to search the results by using efficient algorithms, and how to ranking the results. In this chapter, on one hand, the authors present the foundational knowledge of XML keyword search such as XML data models, XML query languages, inverted index, and Dewey encoding. On the other hand, some existing typical researches of keyword search in XML are presented, including the results models such as Smallest Lowest Common Ancestor (SLCA), Exclusive Lowest Common Ancestor (ELCA), Meaningful Lowest Common Ancestor (MLCA), the related search algorithms, and the ranking approaches.

Abstract:Keyword search is a user-friendly mechanism used to retrieve XML data for web and scientific applications. Unlike text data, XML data contain rich semantics, which are obviously useful for information retrieval. It is observed that most existing approaches for XML keyword search either do not consider relevance ranking or perform relevance ranking using traditional text IR techniques. Based on an in-depth analysis of user information need and XML structural semantics, we propose to rank the relevance between a keyword query and an XML fragment by their semantic similarity. We first present a formula to quantify the concept of semantic similarity and then introduce a novel semantic ranking scheme for XML keyword search. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms existing approaches in terms of search quality and achieve high efficiency and scalability.

Abstract:Keyword search is an effective approach for most users to search for information because they do not need to learn complex query languages,or know the underlying structures of the data.This paper focuses on keyword search in XML documents.It first points out the definition of the result set based on SLCA is not complete and then defines the result set of XML keyword search based on XLCA,which can include all the possible results.Based on such definition,it presents a compact index structure and the corresponding search algorithm.Two search methods have been implemented and the experiments demonstrate the benefits of our method over previously proposed methods.

Abstract:In this paper,a novel index-building method named XKSS is proposed for XML keyword search.With XML structure summary employed,XKSS can cut down the size of keyword indices tremendously through avoiding redundant information being stored and consequently produce a more efficient searching process.Based on XKSS approach,also an algorithm SSB-SLCA is proposed,which can find all SLCA nodes efficiently.Sufficient experiments prove that the proposed approach surpasses other SLCA-finding approaches with ordinary indices in efficiency of both space and time in many cases.

Abstract:Keyword search enables web users to easily access XML data without the need to learn a structured query language and to study possibly complex data schemas. Existing work has addressed the problem of selecting qualified data nodes that match keywords and connecting them in a meaningful way, in the spirit of inferring a where clause in XQuery. However, how to infer the return clause for keyword search is an open problem. To address this challenge, we present an XML keyword search engine, XSeek, to infer the semantics of the search and identify return nodes effectively. XSeek recognizes possible entities and attributes inherently represented in the data. It also distinguishes between search predicates and return specifications in the keywords. Then based on the analysis of both XML data structures and keyword match patterns, XSeek generates return nodes. Extensive experimental studies show the effectiveness of XSeek.

Abstract:Aim.The introduction of the full paper points out the two reasons why the user can not construct effective structural queries;as a result,the queries over XML data often get useless answers.To address this challenge,this paper proposes a new approach for automatically constructing XML structural queries,named XObject.Section 1 reviews past literature.Section 3 explains the XObject method;its core consists of:(1) the generation of a structural query from a keywords query by analyzing the keywords and the schema of XML data;(2) the evaluation of the structural query on XML data with existing XQuery or XPath search engine.Section 4 presents our experimental work;the experimental results for XObject and SLCA,presented in Figs.3 and 4,and their analysis show preliminarily that,compared with SLCA method,XObject method is a little better in recall rate but is much better in precision rate.

Abstract:As XML becomes the standard for data representation and exchange, effective and efficient methods for XML data retrieval have become increasingly important. In practice, XML documents tend to have a shallow and wide structure, and contain a large number of duplicate units. According to these characteristics, we propose a novel algorithm for keyword search in XML documents based on maximum repetitive unit. The basic idea of the algorithm is as follows. Firstly, extract the duplicate structures of XML documents as repetitive units. Then find out which units contain all the query keywords. The results returned are a number of repetitive units associated with the query. The experiments show that the algorithm is scalable, efficient and able to obtain query results with good semantic integrity.

Abstract:A NLG (Natural Language Generation) based XML keyword search technology was presented in this paper, to resolve the problem of losing semantics for XML keyword search based on LCA (Lower Common Ancestor). The Document Planner technology of NLG was applied to XML document and consequently message collection was deduced. With the user filtering the message collection, the semantic search was achieved and the efficiency was improved greatly.

Abstract:Keyword search over XML databases has attracted a lot of attention recently. Existing approaches mainly adopt the concept of lowest common ancestor (LCA), which excessively emphasizes the structural relationships among nodes in XML data. However, semantics of XML databases are not fully exploited. Semi-structural data (XML databases) and structural data (relational databases) have the partly in common structural characteristics. Inspired from relational databases, We propose the notion of Entity Unit (EU), whose structural property ensures that each search result contain more complete information. Finally, we implement the proposed techniques in our algorithm named XSEU. The extensive experiments demonstrate e?ectiveness and e?ciency of our approach. © 2013 Binary Information Press.

We define the keyword search semantic as Meaning Independent Smallest Lowest Common Ancestors (MISLCAs) and query results as Meaning Independent Minimum Connecting Trees (MIMCTs), provide a user-friendly query interface based on keywords and a little XML schema knowledge, refine keyword search to Query Graph based on DTD of XML documents, and give an algorithm to process XML stream and manage the buffer of search results in a single pass efficiently.

Abstract:Empowering users to access databases using simple keywords can relieve the users from the steep learning curve of mastering a structured query language and understanding complex and possibly fast evolving data schemas. In this tutorial, we give an overview of the state-of-the-art techniques for supporting keyword search on structured and semi-structured data, including query result definition, ranking functions, result generation and top-k query processing, snippet generation, result clustering, query cleaning, performance optimization, and search quality evaluation. Various data models will be discussed, including relational data, XML data, graph-structured data, data streams, and workflows. We also discuss applications that are built upon keyword search, such as keyword based database selection, query generation, and analytical processing. Finally we identify the challenges and opportunities of future research to advance the field.

Abstract:This paper presents an effective keyword search method for data-centric extensive markup language (XML) documents. The method divides an XML document into compact connected integral subtrees, called self-integral trees (SI-Trees), to capture the structural information in the XML document. The SI-Trees are generated based on a schema guide. Meaningful self-integral trees (MSI-Trees) are identified, which contain all or some of the input keywords for the keyword search in the XML documents. Indexing is used to accelerate the retrieval of MSI-Trees related to the input keywords. The MSI-Trees are ranked to identify the top-k results with the highest ranks. Extensive tests demonstrate that this method costs 10–100 ms to answer a keyword query, and outperforms existing approaches by 1–2 orders of magnitude.

Abstract:Existing works in XML keyword search have addressed the problem of finding matching results of a query. However, user input queries always contain irrelevant or mismatched terms, spelling errors etc, which causes the search results to be either empty or not meaningful. In this paper, we introduce the problem of XML keyword query refinement, and propose a set of effective and efficient solutions. Finally, extensive experiments show the efficiency and effectiveness of our approach.
