Abstract:Removal of six phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals from Songhua River water and sand-filtered water by adsorption on two powdered activated carbons (WP and WPN) was investigated, where the surface chemical properties of adsorbents were different. The results indicate the adsorption capacities for various targets on powdered activated carbons have a relation to their hydrophobic properties (logKOW),and the sequence is 4-n-NPE1DESEE2E2BPA. Furthermore, the values of TOC and UV254 are decreased by activated carbon adsorption. A majority of endocrine disrupting chemicals are eliminated simultaneously. The removal rates of six targets from Songhua River water and sand-filtered water are 26.82% to 85.97% and 74.62% to 96.64% respectively. The WPN has better adsorption efficiency. It is obvious that the removal efficiencies of phenolic endocrine disrupting chemicals by activated carbon adsorption are affected by organic compounds as well as physical and chemical properties of adsorbents. Therefore,an activated carbon with the pore structure and surface chemistry favorable for adsorption of organic compounds is obtained by modification and used in advanced water treatment, which is important to improve the ability and life-span of adsorbent and to guarantee the security of water quality.
