Abstract:A rare 3D tetranuclear {In-4(mu(2)-OH)(3)} building block based MOF {[In-4/3(mu(2)-OH)(2,6-pydc)(1,4-bda)(0.5)(H2O)]center dot 2H(2)O}(n) (2) was obtained through a crystal transformation from a dimeric complex In-3(2,6-pydc)(3)(1,4-bda)(1.5)(H2O)(6) (1). With a 2D + 3D -> 3D compact structure, 2 retains crystallinity in boiling water and organic solvents, exhibiting exceptional fluorescence quenching behaviour for the DMSO molecule.

Synthesis and Reactivity in Inorganic Metal-Organic and Nano-Metal Chemistry

Abstract:A novel 6(3)-nets framework {[Cd(SiF6)(C11H10N2)(2)]center dot(CH2Cl2)center dot(H2O)}(n) (1) was generated based on asymmetric ligand 3-(pyridin-4-yl)benzenamine (L). L acts as a bidentate ligand to link Cd(II) centers into a 6(3)-nets topology with rectangular channels encapsulating dichloromethane and water as guest molecules. In addition, their luminescent properties were investigated primarily in the solid state, which is basically related to its incorporation into the metal-containing complexes. The result displays that the choice of the amino-functionalized pyridine-containing ligand leading to special connection patterns and diversity of the hydrogen bonds plays a crucial role in the construction of the novel topological framework with interesting luminescent property.

Abstract:A new three-dimensional porous metal-organic framework, {[NH2(CH3)(2)][Zn(atz)(ox)]center dot H2O}(n) (1) (Hatz = 5-amino-1H-tetrazole, H(2)ox = oxalic acid), has been solvothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TG, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complex 1 exhibits an anionic framework that can be simplified as a rarely reported 4-connected lon network. Complex 1 could be utilized as a platform for emission tuning by doping different lanthanide ions. In addition, gas adsorption studies reveal that 1 has a high isosteric heat of CO2 and good adsorption selectivity for CO2 over CH4 and N-2.

Abstract:A 3-connected dia-f-type metal-organic framework compound {[Ag(L)(3/2)H2PO4]}(n) (1) has been synthesized by self-assembly of 4.4'-H(2)bpz (L = 4,4'-H(2)bpz = 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-bipyrazole) and Ag4P2O7 under hydrothermal conditions. It crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I4(1)/acd with a = 21.406(4) angstrom, b = 21.406(4) angstrom, c = 36.298(8) angstrom, Z = 32. X-ray single-crystal diffraction reveals that 1 has a three-dimensional framework with an unprecedented alternate left- and right-handed helices structure, featuring a non-uniform two-fold interpenetrated (4.14(2)) net. Photoluminescent investigation reveals that the title compound displays interesting emissions in a wide region, which shows that the title compound may be a good potential candidate as a photoelectric material. Abstract:Three novel microporous three-dimensional (3-D) metal-organic framework materials [ML](n) [M = Ni, Co, Cd; L = N,N'-bis(4-picolinoyl)hydrazine] were obtained from hydrothermal reactions. The organic ligand L was formed through the in situ ring-opening hydrolysis reaction of 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole with the assistance of metal ions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that complexes 1-3 adopt 6-connected 3-D networks of distorted alpha-Po topology, which are built from non-interpenetrated (4,4) grids cross-linked by zigzag chains. These isomorphic complexes are all of high thermal stability, but some other physical properties are quite different because of their different metal centers. Antiferromagnetic exchange was observed between Ni(II) centers of complex 1, while ferromagnetic for Co(II) centers of complex 2. Complex 3 exhibits strong fluorescence emission.

Abstract:Three porous supramolecular isomers (IZE-1, IZE-2, and IZE-3) with the same framework component [Zn(2)(EBTC)(H(2)O)(2)] (EBTC = 1,1'-ethynebenzene-3,3',5,5'-tetracarboxylate) were successfully constructed by finely tuning the reaction condition. Although both IZE-1 and IZE-2 are constructed from the linear EBTC subunits and one kind of regular [Zn(2)(CO(2))(4)] paddlewheels, their frameworks exhibit two different (3,4)-c net of fof (sqc1575) and sqc1572, respectively, resulting in cavities with different size and shape. However, as for isomer IZE-3, the EBTC ligands are bent and one-half of the [Zn(2)(CO(2))(4)] paddlewheels are distorted, leading to a novel (3,4,4)-c hyx net with point symbol (6.7(2))(4)(6(2).8(2).10(2))(7(2).8(2).11(2)) and vertex symbol (6.7.7)(4)(7(2).7(2).8.8.12.12)(6.6.8.8.10(2).10(2)). Quantum chemical calculations by DFT indicate that the three isomers have very close thermodynamic stabilities, which may explain that subtle condition change leads to variation of the frameworks. Further theoretical semiempirical investigation on the interactions between solvent molecules and compounds shows different hydrogen binding patterns in good agreement with the experimental observations. Furthermore, they exhibit good solid-state luminescence properties with long lifetime.

Abstract:A novel heterometallic-organic framework(HMOF), namely [ZnBa(1,3-BDC) 2 (DMA) 2 ] n ( 1 )(DMA=N,Ndimethylacetamide), was synthesized by means of solvothermal method from isophthalic acid(1,3-BDC) ligand and relevant metal salts as raw materials. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis result demonstrates that compound 1 is a three-dimensional(3D) framework including heterometallic tetranuclear [Zn 2 Ba 2 (COO) 8 ] clusters as building subunits, which could be simplified into an eight-connected body-centered cubic(bcu) topological net. At room temperature, compound 1 displays strong blue luminescence in solid state. Furthermore, the quantum yield and luminescent lifetime of compound 1 were also measured.

Abstract:Three novel 3D metal-organic frameworks of [Ni-2(hfpdpt)(bpy)(2)(H2O)(2)](H2O)(8) (1), [Ni-3(Hhfpdpt)(2)-( bpy)(4)](H2O)(2) (2), and [Mn-2(hfpdpt)(H2O)(2)] (3) have been synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of Ni-II or Mn-II nitrate, 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic acid (H(4)hfpdpt), and 4,4'-bipyridyl (bpy). Complex 1 self-assembles into a 3D framework with unconventional 4-connected network topology, while 2 and 3 exhibit two kinds of unusual (4,8)-connected topological networks. Notably, in 1 and 2, the bpy coligand participates in the construction of their 3D frameworks, and the pH value also plays an important role to tune their space arrangements, while in 3, the bpy coligand is not involved in the final crystalline lattice. Furthermore, a detailed investigation on their magnetic and adsorptive properties is carried out.

Abstract:A rare chiral 3D cluster-organic framework {[Zn17O5(NTB)(6)(NDB)(3)]center dot 41H(2)O}(n) (1) (H3NTB = 4,4',4 "-nitrilotrisbenzoic acid and H2NDB = 4,4'-nitrilodibenzoic acid) was prepared and structurally characterized. Complex 1 contains two types of [Zn-4(mu(4)-O)(COO)(6)] and unreported [Zn-9(mu(3)-O)(3)(COO)(12)] SBUs, which link bi- and tricarboxylic acids and extend to an unprecedented (3,6,12)-connected framework. In addition, electronic structure calculations were performed to scrutinize the features of embedded clusters.

Abstract:The hydrothermal reactions of Zn(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O/ Cu(NO3)(2).6H(2)O with 5-(4-pyridyl)tetrazole in an ethanol/ water or ethanol/water/pyridine medium yield one 2D and one 3D metal-organic coordination framework [Zn-2(OH)(4-Ptz)(3)] (1) and [Cu(4.ptz).0.5(py)] (3) [4-ptz = 5-(4-pyridyl)tetrazolate, py = pyridine], respectively. Complex 1 possesses two identical and independent rectangular grid sheets with twofold parallel interpenetration, in which the four-connected nodes of the net are provided by Zn-2(OH) units connected to one another through 4-ptz and (4-PtZ)(2) bridges. These composite sheets are stacked one on top of another by hydrogen-bonding interactions to afford a 3D structure. There are many structural similarities between complex 1 and the recently reported 2D layered network [Zn(OH)(4-ptz)(H2O)] (2), in particular the components of the network, the coordination mode of the 4-ptz ligand and the in situ formation of hydroxy groups. Complex 2 can be synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of Zn(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O and 5-(4-pyridyl)tetrazole in an ethanol/water/pyridine medium. The structural characterization of complex 3 shows a porous structure that contains the guest pyridine molecules. Abstract:Employing the flexible tetrapodal ligand 1,2,3,4-tetra-(4-pyridyl)-butane (TPB) along with fumaric acid (H2FMA) as the bridges, a metal-organic framework of [Zn(TPB)(FMA)·(2H2O)] (1) was obtained and characterized by elemental analysis, spectral method (IR), single crystal X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and fluorescent property. This polymer exhibits a three dimensional (3D) dense network with an interesting (4,4)-connected PtS topology. It also displays good thermal stability and strong photoluminescence in the blue region band. Thus it may serve as a candidate of thermally stable blue-light-emitting photoluminescent material.

Abstract:A novel 3d-3d heterometallic metal-organic framework, [Zn-2(ox)(3)] [{Cu-I(4,4-bipy)}(2)] center dot C2H6O2 (ox = oxalate, 4,4-bipy = 4,4-bipyridine), 1 has been synthesized by using two bidentate ligands under hydrothermal condition. The Cu(II) ion in the starting materials was reduced to Cu(I) along with the partial oxidation of the ethylene alcohol molecules to the oxalate, leading to the formation of 1. Abstract:Reactions of two new tripodal ligands 1,3,5-tris(1-imidazolyl)benzene (4) and 1,3-bis(1-imidazolyl)-5-(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (5) with metal [Ag(I), Cu(II), Zn(II), Ni(II)] salts lead to the formation of novel two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks [Ag(2)(4)(2)][p-C(6)H(4)(COO)(2)].H(2)O (6), [Ag(4)]ClO(4) (7), [Cu(4)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](CH(3)COO)(2).2H(2)O (8), [Zn(4)(2)(H(2)O)(2)](NO(3))(2) (9), [Ni(4)(2)(N(3))(2)].2H(2)O (10), and [Ag(5)]ClO(4) (11). All the structures were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. It is interesting that, in complexes 6,7, and 11 with three-coordinated planar silver(I) atoms, each ligand 4 or 5 connects three metal atoms, while in the case of complexes 8, 9, and 10 with six-coordinated octahedral metal atoms, each ligand 4 only links two metal atoms, and another imidazole nitrogen atom of 4 did not participate in the coordination with the metal atoms in these complexes. The results show that the nature of organic ligand and geometric needs of metal atoms have great influence on the structure of metal-organic frameworks.

Abstract:A novel NbO type microporous metal-organic framework Cu2L (ZJU-32; H4L = 5'-((3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)ethynyl)-[1,1':3',1 ''-terphenyl]-4,4 ''-dicarboxylic acid) constructed from an elaborately designed tetratopic ligand was solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. The activated ZJU-32a exhibits high permanent porosity with the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 3831 m(2) g(-1) and the pore volume of 1.482 cm(3) g(-1), enabling it to be a promising material for both methane storage and carbon dioxide capture at room temperature.

Abstract:A novel 3D metal–organic framework [Ag8(L)4](NO3)8·4H2O (1) has been solvothermally synthesized by self-assembly of a new tetradentate imidazolate ligand L (L = bis(3,5-bis((1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl)-2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)methane) and silver(I) salt. X-ray crystallography reveals that 1 contains rare 3-fold interpenetrating dia-g (or 4.142) nets. Each single dia-g net comprises linked Ag–L meso-helices. The possible ferroelectric behavior and luminescence property of the title compound have also been studied.
