The Effects of Ownership on Banks' Performance in China

Abstract:Using an unbalanced panel data of 29 Chinese banks over the years from 2000 to 2010,this paper assesses the static effects,election effects and dynamic effects of bank ownership on banks' performance in China.The results show that the city commercial bank is the best in static effect;In election effect,the chosen banks of shareholding reform are worst,and the chosen banks of strategic investors are better;In dynamic effect,shareholding reform and listed publicly are better for the increase of capital adequacy ratio.According to above results,this paper suggests that the development of city commercial banks is significant to the next stage of bank system's reformation.Besides,regulatory institutes should strictly regulate capital adequacy ratio to improve the risk resistance capacity of bank system.Moreover,strategic investors should be encouraged to invest in Chinese banks,because they have played important roles in improving banks' performance.
