Awareness of Measles-Related Knowledge among Migrant Workers in Shunyi District,Beijing

Abstract:Objective To understand awareness of measles-related knowledge in migrant workers from rural areas outside Beijing to provide evidence for further development of strategies for measles control and appropriate intervention measures in Shunyi,Beijing.Methods Multi-phase,stratified and cluster sampling method was used to conduct the investigation and data were analyzed with SPSS version 13.0 software.Results Totally,921 migrant workers employed by 24 employers in construction sites,manufacturing enterprises,large-scale construction materials suppliers and hotels and restaurants were investigated,with 445 men and 476 women,80.9 percent of them with educational levels of secondary schools or secondary vocational schools,56.8 percent of them at age of 21～30 years,and 67.4 percent of them with living space less than five square meters per capita in average.Only 64.1 percent of them were provided with face masks as they worked at a closed spaces.Billboards were updated regularly only in 44.2 percent of the work sites.Awareness of measles-related knowledge averaged more than 75 percent in them,awareness of measles prevention strategies lower than 60 percent,only 6.3 percent of them could correctly answered the questions about measles prevention,and 5.9 percent of them could understand all relevant knowledge and strategies for measles prevention.Conclusion Measles prevention and control in migrant workers should be focused on improvement of their awareness of all measles-related knowledge and strategies in the future,particularly providing diversified and accessible publicity and health education for them.
